00:25 Stay tuned, your "Amazing Facts" adventure begins now.
00:31 Doug Batchelor: The study today is based on Revelation
00:32 chapter 12.
00:34 If you have your Bibles, you may want to thumb your way there
00:36 right now or on your Bible device that you're holding,
00:41 beginning with a really amazing fact.
00:44 In 1954, a four year old girl was abducted from her home in
00:50 Colombia in the mountains, and with the idea of kidnapping her
00:55 and asking for ransom.
00:57 We don't know exactly what went wrong, but something went wrong
01:01 and they didn't want to kill the child, so they took her off down
01:04 a logging road in the jungle and they let her go, four years old.
01:09 And of course, she cried and mourned for a while.
01:13 And she didn't struggle so much with thirst because it did
01:17 rain frequently.
01:19 There was water there and the climate was somewhat mild, and
01:23 so she did not freeze, but she wandered around and looked for
01:28 food, and eventually a group of capuchin monkeys were intrigued
01:32 with her and they began to drop food.
01:36 She lived in the jungle for five years.
01:41 It's just an amazing story.
01:43 Often tormented by insects, eventually she wore her
01:46 clothes off.
01:47 She followed this troupe of monkeys that were watching her
01:51 from the tree that kind of adopted her.
01:53 She even got to the place where she could climb pretty well and
01:57 learned to forage for food and she stayed alive.
02:00 When she was finally found after these years of living in the
02:03 jungle, she lost all natural social inhibitions, she had no
02:07 clothes, she'd forgotten how to speak her language, she didn't
02:10 remember her name, and they did not ever find her real parents.
02:15 They gave her the name Marina.
02:17 She eventually was young enough where she could still learn,
02:21 relearn to speak both English and Spanish.
02:25 She moved to Britain, she was married, and all of this is
02:28 contained in a fascinating book called "The Girl with No Name."
02:34 God provided for her in the wilderness in a miraculous way.
02:37 Right now she's nearly 70 years old and she can still
02:41 climb trees.
02:44 You know, the Bible talks about a woman, which is a symbol for
02:48 the church, and we have a true woman and a counterfeit woman in
02:54 Revelation 12 and Revelation 17.
02:57 We're going to study a very important subject.
02:59 There are Christians all over the world, go to
03:01 different churches.
03:02 How do you know?
03:03 Does it matter what church?
03:05 Is there a true church?
03:06 Do you even need to go to church?
03:09 We're going to find out what people on the street think about
03:11 this subject and so let's take a look at some of their comments.
03:16 female: I guess you don't really know, right?
03:18 I guess just whatever feels best for each person, right?
03:23 female: I think it really depends.
03:25 I think a lot of religions have a lot of different things, but I
03:28 think revelation is one of the important things.
03:30 I think there's only so much that Old Testaments and all
03:33 things can predict.
03:34 You know, there's only so many coincidences, I feel like.
03:37 male: I guess typically it would be how you're raised originally,
03:41 and then as you get older, you do your own investigation.
03:45 female: One I grew up with.
03:47 male: I think you just got to go back to whatever your parents
03:50 are and stick with that, don't change it.
03:53 male: How do you know what churches are false?
03:56 Well, depends which culture you're into really, doesn't it?
04:00 male: People just need to pray a lot and you know, get some
04:03 discernment, read, do their own research, read their own
04:08 literature, and that's probably the best way.
04:12 female: We don't, every church has its flaw.
04:15 You believe what you believe in your soul, and that's how
04:17 you live.
04:18 female: Well, what, how can a church be false?
04:20 It it may not appeal to you or to another.
04:23 male: Like if there's no cross in the top or like no like
04:26 religious signs.
04:28 male: I don't believe so.
04:31 I wouldn't say it matters too much.
04:34 male: I believe it does only because the Bible preaches
04:37 baptism for admission of sins, and so I believe you must be
04:40 baptized, and there's a lot of churches that don't teach them.
04:44 male: No, it doesn't.
04:47 Just have the same, if it's the same Bible, it's fine.
04:50 male: Not really, at least you're attending church and
04:53 believe in something.
04:56 Doug: Does truth matter?
05:01 Most important question that was ever asked was when Pontius
05:05 Pilate said to Jesus, "What is truth?"
05:10 And then he walked away from Jesus and did not wait for
05:12 the answer.
05:14 He was standing there in front of the person who is the
05:16 embodiment of truth.
05:19 Said, "What is truth?"
05:21 And with cynicism, he walked away figuring, "Nobody can
05:24 really know the truth."
05:25 And you can tell from the answers that we've been hearing
05:28 some people say, "Well, you've got your truth and I've got my
05:31 truth, and there is really no absolute truth.
05:33 What you believe is good for you and what I believe is good
05:35 for me."
05:37 How many of you would like to go to a doctor that's doing brain
05:40 surgery on you and have him say, "Well, I think it's a brain, but
05:44 he thinks it's a cantaloupe, so, you know, whatever you believe
05:48 is okay."
05:49 Or when you're on the airplane and you're flying across the
05:52 ocean and the pilot comes on the air and says, "I realize that
05:54 some of you think there are absolute laws of aerodynamics,
05:57 but you know, I'd like to try an experiment.
06:03 I think this plane will work just fine as a submarine because
06:06 I believe it and I'm sincere."
06:10 Would you want to get on that airplane?
06:12 Or how many of you want to know that that pilot has learned
06:15 there are certain absolute rules of aerodynamics and aviation.
06:20 And if you violate those rules, there are terrible consequences
06:24 because it's unforgiving.
06:26 There is absolute truth regarding God and eternal life.
06:31 This notion that has become popular in society that, "Well,
06:34 you got your truth and I got my truth, and who can know what
06:37 truth is?"
06:39 It's not what the Bible teaches.
06:41 God says, "Thy Word is truth," that's what Jesus said.
06:45 There is truth.
06:47 Jesus said, "I am the way, I am the truth, I am the life."
06:51 Don't believe the devil's lie that it doesn't really matter,
06:54 and as long as you're sincere--how many of you have
06:57 been sincere and you found out you were wrong and it didn't
07:01 help that you were sincere.
07:04 I was driving cross country one time, going from California
07:07 to Texas.
07:09 Late at night, finally needed some gas, got off on the
07:13 cloverleaf and looped around.
07:15 This is before you had GPS.
07:18 I looped around a couple of times and I found the
07:20 gas station.
07:21 I filled up and I got back on the freeway and I was feeling
07:23 pretty good that I was going to make great progress.
07:26 But as I was going down Interstate 10, I kept seeing the
07:31 signs that said Interstate 10, I said, "I'm on the
07:33 right interstate."
07:36 But then I started saying, "Well, they must have a chain of
07:38 those restaurants everywhere, because I just saw one a few
07:42 miles back.
07:44 Then I realized I was looking at the same restaurant and it said
07:47 Interstate 10 West.
07:49 Well, I'm going to Texas, I needed to be going east."
07:54 I had been perfectly happy and sincere, but I was never going
07:58 to get to Texas going the wrong direction.
08:01 It didn't matter how sincere I was.
08:04 And there's a lot of people in the world today, they think,
08:06 "Well, it doesn't really matter as long as you're sincere."
08:09 Oh, it does matter, friends, what you believe.
08:12 The truth will set you free.
08:16 There is a truth and knowing the truth and every element of Bible
08:19 truth makes you free-er.
08:23 So number one, first question, how does Revelation picture
08:27 God's true church?
08:29 Turn to your Bibles, we're going to read it first.
08:31 Turn to Revelation chapter 12, please.
08:33 We'll read a few verses here, "And now a great sign appeared,"
08:37 verse 1, "a great sign appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with
08:41 the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a
08:46 garland," that means a crown, a Stephanos, "with twelve stars:
08:51 Then being with child, she cried out in labor and pain to give
08:55 birth," this woman is great with child.
08:58 "And another sign appeared in heaven; and behold a great fiery
09:02 red dragon, having seven heads," how many heads?
09:07 "Seven heads and ten horns."
09:09 How many horns?
09:10 "And seven crowns on his heads.
09:13 And his tail drew a third of the stars of heaven, and he threw
09:17 them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman
09:20 who was ready to give birth, to devour her child as soon as it
09:24 was born.
09:25 And she bore a male child, who was to rule all nations with a
09:28 rod of iron: and her child was caught up to God, and
09:32 His throne.
09:34 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a
09:36 place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one
09:40 thousand two hundred and sixty days," fed in the wilderness.
09:44 Now we're going to talk about that and we're going to go back
09:46 to the Bible in just a moment.
09:48 So the answer, Revelation chapter 12, what does it say
09:51 about this woman?
09:52 It says, a what?
09:54 "A WOMAN clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and
09:59 on her head a garland of twelve stars.
10:01 Being with CHILD, she cried out in labor."
10:04 She's going through labor pains, "and in pain to give birth, and
10:09 she bears a male Child who is to rule all nations with a ROD
10:13 of iron."
10:14 Who do you think that is?
10:17 That male child is Jesus, the Christ.
10:20 He is caught up to God's throne, we know Jesus ascended to
10:23 heaven, who is the woman?
10:25 What does a woman represent?
10:28 In the Bible when it talks about this woman, she may appear here
10:31 before it's over with.
10:33 A woman represents God's bride, and this woman who's great with
10:38 child is a symbol of a church.
10:40 What is she wearing?
10:41 She's clothed with the what?
10:43 The sun, that's the light of God's truth that you find in the
10:47 New Testament.
10:50 Standing on the moon, does the moon give light at night?
10:55 Does the moon have light of its own or does the moon reflect the
10:58 light of the sun that will rise?
11:01 It is the Old Testament reflecting the light of the Son
11:03 of righteousness who would arise with healing in His wings.
11:07 The New Testament church stands on the foundation of the
11:10 promises of God in the Old Testament.
11:13 And above her head, above the head is a symbol of leadership.
11:16 You've got the 12 stars, and that represents the 12 tribes in
11:20 the Old Testament.
11:22 You've got the 12 apostles in the New Testament.
11:24 You even have the 12 princes of Moses leading Israel, the 12
11:28 judges of Israel and the book of Judges, 12, a symbol
11:31 of leadership.
11:33 This is God's church.
11:34 He is clothed with sun, moon, stars.
11:38 Who made the sun?
11:39 Who made the moon?
11:40 Look at Genesis, who made the stars?
11:42 This is God's light.
11:44 The Bible says to the bride, "You are the light of the world.
11:49 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good
11:52 works and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
11:54 So this woman represents the true church, okay?
11:58 It says, and how do we know that?
12:00 You read in Jeremiah 6:2, God's church is symbolized by woman,
12:04 "I have likened the daughter of Zion to a lovely and a
12:08 delicate woman."
12:10 The sun representing the light of Jesus, Psalm 84, Malachi 4:2,
12:14 giving you these verses.
12:16 The moon represents the promises and the history of the Old
12:19 Testament, which the church was built on.
12:21 This will all be in your lesson.
12:23 The stars above her head symbolize the leadership of the
12:26 church and you read about the stars, it says there in
12:31 Revelation chapter 1, which were the ministers of the church, it
12:34 was leadership.
12:36 The One who is to rule all nations with a rod of iron, this
12:39 Man child, is Jesus, amen?
12:43 And the dragon wants to devour the Man child as soon as
12:47 it's born.
12:48 Now you see this woman, but she's juxtaposed against a
12:52 different woman than you find in Revelation 17.
12:55 Okay, back to our Bibles.
12:57 Go in your Bible to Revelation chapter 17.
13:00 We're going to start with verse 3, and you'll find that these
13:03 two women are, they're actually opposites.
13:06 And this woman exists in the world today too.
13:11 Revelation 17, start with verse 3, "So he," the angel, "carried
13:15 me away in the Spirit into the wilderness.
13:17 And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet colored beast that was
13:22 full of names of blasphemy," having how many heads?
13:26 Seven heads, and how many horns?
13:29 Now, when was the last time you saw a beast with seven heads and
13:32 ten horns?
13:33 They're not that common, are they?
13:35 How many would agree this is the same beast?
13:38 By the way, it appears in Revelation 13 too.
13:42 This beast who is trying to destroy the woman in Revelation
13:46 12 is in cooperation with the woman in Revelation 17.
13:50 What is a woman?
13:52 Church, so you got one woman clothed with God's light, but
13:56 this woman, it says she's arrayed, this is verse 4,
14:00 "purple, scarlet, adorned with gold, precious stones, pearls,"
14:04 all things you would find on earth that can be manmade,
14:09 "having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the
14:12 filthiness of her fornication."
14:14 And if you have any doubt about this woman, she's got on her
14:18 forehead, people have things in their forehead in revelation.
14:21 She's got this stamp: "Mystery Babylon the great, the mother
14:26 of harlots."
14:28 She's got daughters that have come out of her, "And of
14:30 abominations of the earth.
14:32 And the woman is drunken with the blood of the saints," so
14:34 this is the wrong woman.
14:36 You got these two women.
14:38 So, a woman represents what?
14:43 Can we use the Bible and Bible prophecy to try and find out if
14:46 God has a people in the world today?
14:49 Is the Bible pretty clear there is the true woman of light, and
14:54 there is a counterfeit?
14:56 One is riding with the beast, the other is being persecuted by
15:00 the beast.
15:01 Doesn't matter what church you're in.
15:05 You don't want to be with that woman in Babylon because you
15:08 read Revelation chapter 18:19.
15:10 It says Babylon is going to be destroyed.
15:14 That harkens back to the tower of Babel, man-made worship that
15:17 was confused and cursed by God.
15:19 There in Genesis chapter 11, these are the keys to
15:23 understanding these things.
15:25 Says a woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet adorned with
15:28 gold and precious stones and pearls.
15:31 So you've got this woman riding a beast in Revelation 17.
15:36 This beast is a great persecuting power that we find,
15:39 if we go from chapter 12 to chapter 13, you're going to see
15:42 that beast appears again.
15:44 All right, number two, who is the great red dragon, and what
15:49 does he try to do?
15:51 Now we're going back to chapter 12, "That great dragon was cast
15:55 out, called the serpent of old," called what?
15:59 "The DEVIL and SATAN."
16:02 So it's saying that the devil is manipulating this power,
16:07 this beast.
16:08 Now you, when you read in Isaiah 14, it describes the devil, but
16:15 it uses the king of Tyre.
16:17 If you look in Ezekiel 28, it talks about the devil, but he's
16:22 working through the king of Babylon.
16:25 When you read Revelation 12, it talks about the devil, but he's
16:28 operating through the kingdom of pagan Rome.
16:33 Says the dragon tries to devour the Man child as soon as He is
16:36 born, "The dragon stood before the woman who's ready to give
16:41 birth, to DEVOUR her child as soon as it is born."
16:47 So this dragon is an enemy of Christ, wants to destroy Christ.
16:53 You know, there's several times in Bible history when the devil
16:57 has tried to stop the savior from coming.
17:01 Now the devil knew that the Messiah would come.
17:03 He knew the incarnation would happen.
17:05 He didn't know exactly when.
17:07 When the children of Israel were in Egypt, he thought, "Now would
17:10 be the time when God would send the savior.
17:13 So what did he do?
17:15 The dragon tried to destroy all the male baby boys.
17:21 Do you remember the Pharaoh was telling them to throw all the
17:24 baby boys to the crocodiles in the Nile River, but Moses is
17:28 spared, one is spared.
17:30 He becomes a savior.
17:32 Do you know, back during the time of Athaliah, if you know
17:35 your Bible, if you get to 2 Kings, it tells about a
17:38 wicked queen.
17:39 She's the daughter of Jezebel, another wicked queen.
17:43 By the way, in the time of Jezebel and Athaliah, there is a
17:46 three and half year period, 1,260 days, just
17:50 like Revelation.
17:53 And her son Ahaziah is killed in battle by Jehu.
17:57 She does not want one of the sons of David to rule.
18:00 Athaliah is a pagan.
18:02 Her mother, Jezebel is a pagan.
18:04 She wants to be queen.
18:05 Well, among the Jews they had kings, they didn't have queens.
18:09 The men ruled.
18:11 So, but she wants to be queen, so she kills all of the babies
18:16 of David, the descendants of David.
18:19 She kills all of her grandchildren.
18:20 Boy, talk about cold-blooded.
18:23 But one escapes.
18:25 His name is Joash, and he ends up being in the temple of God.
18:30 He comes out of the temple of God when he's seven years old.
18:32 They blow the trumpets, they coronate him king, she is
18:36 destroyed, something like when Jesus, our Savior, the Son of
18:41 David, Christ.
18:42 He's going to come from the heavenly temple, the trumpets
18:44 will blow, the people will rejoice, and
18:46 Babylon's destroyed.
18:47 What you see happening in the Bible is going to be repeated in
18:50 the future.
18:51 This is what Revelation is talking about.
18:54 So the devil under Herod using the Roman power.
18:59 How many remember when Herod sent his soldiers to Bethlehem?
19:02 they said well there's a baby, he's the new king of the Jews.
19:04 You know what Herod's official title was?
19:06 The Romans gave him the title "king of the Jews."
19:10 So when the wise men come into Jerusalem, they said, "Where is
19:13 He that is born King of the Jews."
19:14 And Herod said, "What did you say?"
19:18 He said, "Oh, yeah, yeah.
19:20 I'd like to know about when you find Him.
19:22 Tell me when you find Him, I would like to worship Him too."
19:26 He wanted to kill Him.
19:28 The devil was working, the dragon through pagan Rome.
19:36 And then later you find the devil starts working through the
19:39 church papal Rome during the dark ages.
19:41 Number three, what happens after Satan fails to destroy Jesus?
19:46 You know, did the devil try to destroy Jesus on the cross?
19:49 Did he try to keep Him in the tomb?
19:52 Could the devil keep Him in the tomb?
19:54 Did Christ ascend to heaven?
19:56 Now the devil cannot hurt Jesus anymore, can he?
20:00 He's out of his reach.
20:02 So what does the devil do now?
20:04 Says, "her Child is CAUGHT UP to God and His throne."
20:08 As the disciples watch in Acts chapter 2 , Jesus ascended, and
20:12 he's caught up in a cloud of angels.
20:14 And the Bible said that as He left, He will come, amen?
20:17 He's coming in the clouds with all of the angels of heaven.
20:21 But in the meantime, the devil now vents his fury, the devil
20:25 wants to hurt Jesus by hurting what Jesus loves.
20:31 If you want to hurt somebody, you don't just torture them, but
20:34 torture their child in front of them.
20:39 I remember once when one of our boys was 18 months old, he had
20:45 spinal meningitis.
20:47 They didn't know, so they had to do a test it's called the
20:51 spinal tap.
20:53 But because we had come to the doctor off hours, they had an
20:56 intern there that was in training, they call it
21:00 practicing medicine.
21:03 And we watched as the hospital staff held down our beautiful 18
21:07 month baby boy, and he tried to push the needle into his spine
21:12 and find the right spot to drain out spinal fluid, and our little
21:16 boy, they can't numb them at the time, and our little boy is
21:20 looking up with his eyes wild with tears, he's going, "Daddy,
21:24 daddy, daddy, why are you letting them hurt me?"
21:27 And it broke my heart.
21:28 I would have traded places with him just like that.
21:32 The devil knows that Jesus loves us.
21:34 He wants to hurt Jesus by hurting His people.
21:38 That's why he persecutes the church.
21:41 After Jesus is caught up to heaven, what does Satan do to
21:44 the church?
21:46 "When the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he
21:50 PERSECUTED the woman who gave birth to the child."
21:56 After Christ ascended to heaven, some of the most severe
21:58 persecution came upon the church.
22:01 How many have heard the stories of what Nero and Diocletian and
22:06 the different Roman emperors did to the Christians in
22:08 the Colosseums?
22:10 It's not just the fables, they were fed to wild beasts.
22:14 Nero smeared pitch on the Christians and lit them on fire
22:18 alive to light his gardens as they writhed in pain.
22:23 It was terrible.
22:25 Why do you think the catacombs are under Rome?
22:27 Because they had to go underground, so to speak.
22:30 It was called "religio illicita."
22:32 Even in the Bible, you can see where Paul and the Jews had been
22:36 expelled from Rome by the emperor.
22:40 See, the Roman Empire had tolerated many religions as long
22:43 as you still held up the Roman religion is supreme, but when
22:47 the Christians said "No, we're not going to offer incense to
22:49 your pagan gods, they outlawed the religion, and it became
22:53 "religio illicita."
22:55 That's why Paul says it may be better if you don't get married
22:58 and have a family right now because of the persecution is
23:01 so intense.
23:03 So the devil tried to destroy the church with Plan A.
23:08 Plan A was annihilation, extermination, genocide.
23:12 Feed them to the lions, kill them off in the mines, work them
23:15 to death, crucify them.
23:18 When Nero burned Rome, he blamed it on the Christians.
23:21 Nero burned Rome because he didn't like the
23:24 wooden tenements.
23:25 He wanted marble structures and he thought, "I got to get rid of
23:27 all these poor people."
23:29 He set the city on fire, watched it burn, played his fiddle,
23:32 you've heard the story.
23:34 And when they were outraged, he said, "The Christians did it."
23:37 He said, "By the way, you know, the Christians are living
23:38 underground, and they're cannibals.
23:42 They believe in eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus,
23:46 they're cannibals," and they had terrible propaganda against
23:49 Christians, and the Christians experienced a
23:51 terrible persecution.
23:52 Not only that, during this time, the Jews rebelled against the
23:56 Romans, and people saw Christianity and Judaism.
23:59 They kept the same Sabbath, they worship the same God, they read
24:02 the same Bible, they saw them as sort of the same thing.
24:05 And so the Jews became very hated after 70 AD.
24:10 And so Judaism and Christianity were both outlawed, and
24:15 Christians and Jews were being exterminated in mass, destroyed,
24:22 enslaved, property taken away, scattered around the empire.
24:27 But you know what happened?
24:29 The seed of Christianity is the blood of the martyrs.
24:35 The more they mowed them down, the more they grew.
24:39 Because the pagans would come to the Colosseum and they'd watch
24:41 these Christians before they're being fed to wild animals,
24:45 calmly pray.
24:47 They had expressions of peace and joy.
24:50 They looked like they were on their way to a wedding, because
24:52 they knew their next conscious thought was the resurrection and
24:56 seeing the Lord.
24:57 And they said, "Why are they so peaceful?
24:59 Why are they so brave?"
25:02 And they started asking questions and Christianity
25:05 kept spreading.
25:07 And the devil said, "This is not working."
25:09 So he went to Plan B, whereas if you can't destroy them from the
25:14 outside, destroy them from the inside.
25:16 He legalized Christianity and he co-mingled paganism
25:21 and Christianity.
25:23 Constantine ostensibly he legalized Christianity, and he
25:27 said, "Yeah, well, my mother is converted to Christianity, so I
25:30 can't kill them off.
25:31 They're really not hurting anybody."
25:32 And all of a sudden it became very vogue to be a Christian.
