00:27 I've got in my hand here a bottle of glass cleaner,
00:32 something that people use to wash their windows, 00:35 their mirrors, their wind- shields, and other 00:37 glass surfaces and when I turn it over and look at the bottom, 00:42 here it says CAUTION, Contents Under Pressure. 00:46 And we know that pressure is there because we can 00:49 take the lid off and push the button and shhh! 00:51 the cleaner comes out. 00:54 Welcome to Body Battles part 6 and our title is called 00:59 "Contents Under Pressure." 01:01 Reading that just reminds me of the pressure that 01:05 so many of us are under on the inside. 01:08 Blood pressure, and stress and strain, so we're going to 01:13 talk about that and how to relieve that pressure. 01:16 My guest again is Jack McIntosh, he's been with me 01:20 for five programs and this is number six, we've got two more 01:23 to go and we're talking all about health and what we can do 01:28 to help our bodies in the midst of the war that we're in with 01:32 destructive forces and destructive habits 01:35 that are trying to bring us down to an early grave. 01:39 So Jack, thank you again for coming up from Oregon 01:43 with your wife Mary being up here for a few days with us 01:46 in the beautiful forest of Priest River, ID. 01:49 Yes indeed. Yes, it's a blessing to have you 01:52 and as we get started, I'd like to read a text. 01:54 I always like to start a program with a Bible verse 01:58 and this is Psalm 23, one of my favorite Psalms. 02:01 David wrote and said the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want 02:06 He makes me to lie down in green pastures, 02:11 He leads me beside the still waters, or the quiet waters, 02:16 He restores my soul, He leads me in the paths 02:21 of righteousness for His name sake. 02:23 I can't tell you how many times I lay in bed at night, 02:27 If I'm awake, I will just go through this Psalm in my mind 02:32 because it's just so calming. It just, it relieves pressure 02:37 thinking about lying down in green pastures and the 02:43 still waters and here's one more verse. 02:45 I like this one too, Psalm 37:7. 02:48 Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. 02:53 God wants us to be at rest, He wants us to be at peace, 02:56 He doesn't want us to be like this glass cleaner can. 03:00 Contents Under Pressure. Yeah. 03:02 Contents under pressure. 03:03 So talk to us about pressure, blood pressure and the battle 03:08 and how people can bring down those numbers. 03:12 Yes, alright, so, we are going to talk about hypertension 03:16 today. Hyper meaning too much, tension, of course, that's 03:21 the pressure in the interior lines, the vascular system. 03:25 So, we're going to talk to you about that. 03:28 What is hypertension? Well most often in America 03:34 hypertension is caused by the vascular system becoming 03:42 gradually occluded or blocked by substances on the inside 03:49 lining of the artery and as it becomes... 03:52 As the artery narrows and narrows and narrows, 03:56 the body compensates for that narrowing because it 04:02 wants to deliver nutrients and oxygen in the proper 04:06 proportions...To all the cells. To all the cells that need it 04:09 and so in order to compensate for the narrowing, 04:13 now you are getting less of those nutrients and oxygen. 04:16 Right! So the body compensates by increasing the pressure 04:20 in the line, so to speak, the artery...Like the plumbing, 04:23 like the body's plumbing... to bring all the blood to all 04:27 the cells and when they get clogged, they just start 04:30 narrowing and then the heart has to pump harder. 04:32 To compensate for the narrowing and so we get 04:37 high blood pressure. Now the problem of course with 04:39 high blood pressure is that it can result in a heart attack 04:43 and it can result in a stroke. 04:44 So for that reason, we want to be able to properly manage 04:51 hypertension and reduce it. Now in order for us to 04:56 get to the root of the problem we really have to get to the 05:00 reason why the arteries are being blocked, right, 05:03 and very often that is a problem of the diet where we're eating 05:07 lots of animal products, oxidized cholesterol, 05:11 damaging the arteries and of course laying down for that 05:19 injury, compensating for the injury laying down a hard cover 05:23 over that injury and the artery gradually getting smaller. 05:28 So the arteries get damaged like in the last program 05:31 we talked about the sugar... Too much sugar attached to the 05:34 hemoglobin, it somehow damages the arteries and if there is 05:38 then the body plugs up the holes with plaque, right? Yes! 05:44 Now the body has a natural substance that controls 05:53 the opening of the arteries... Arteries are not just 05:58 pipes, they have muscles around them that can reduce the 06:04 opening, or it can dilate and enlarge the opening. 06:09 And the substance that our creator has provided in the body 06:15 to dilate the arteries and open them up, because when you open 06:19 the artery, what happens to the pressure in the line? 06:22 The pressure goes down and the heart doesn't have to pump 06:24 as hard. Right? When we reduce the opening, 06:31 the pressure goes up. 06:33 It turns out that there is a substance that our creator has 06:37 placed in the human body called nitric oxide and nitric oxide 06:42 is an arterial dilator, it dilates and opens up the 06:46 arteries, blood pressure comes down. 06:49 Sometimes because of our dietary habits or lack of physical 06:54 activity, the sweet drinks that we are drinking, 06:57 and just all those lifestyle habits were not producing 07:02 enough nitric oxide to dilate those arteries and open them up. 07:06 So can I just go to Walmart or to Ralph's and buy a 07:10 bottle of nitric oxide and drink it and it will open up my 07:14 blood vessels and bring my blood pressure down... 07:17 Not quite. Solve my heart problems. 07:20 Not so much. 07:21 So what we have to do is stimulate nitric oxide 07:25 in the way the creator intended for us to stimulate nitric oxide. 07:30 One of the most powerful stimulators of nitric oxide 07:36 is you guessed...Physical activity. 07:39 I knew that was coming. I knew it, so we got to keep... 07:44 So when the body moves, like we talked about in the last program 07:47 that only creates more insulin receptors right, 07:50 where the insulin can get the blood sugar into the cells 07:54 quicker because now the muscles need it but the cells also 07:58 create nitric oxide as well. Yeah. 08:01 I'll tell you a little story, I was at a nurse's symposium 08:08 in Chicago and the company that I was with, 08:14 we have software for Managing Wellness programs 08:19 and so we were there to talk about our software 08:23 and various physicians, they have lectures and the nurses 08:27 go to these lectures and they learn all about the new science. 08:30 Well, my friend Bob and I were going by one of those 08:34 lecture halls, we looked in and there was a physician 08:39 from Stanford University, Dr. Cook who was lecturing 08:45 and one of the things he was talking about was nitric oxide 08:49 and he was talking about how... he had a slide on the screen 08:54 where it showed the cells, the endothelium cells. 08:59 The lining of the artery, they produce the nitric oxide 09:03 the very thin lining of the artery. And he was showing 09:07 the artery, the endothelium of an inactive person 09:12 and you could see the cells and they were all jumbled up 09:15 and disarranged and not very orderly if you will. 09:21 And then they put that same person on an exercise program 09:26 and now when you looked at the slide on the right 09:30 the picture on the right showed the cells and very different. 09:34 They're all lined up and producing nitric oxide. 09:37 And dilating the artery and of course the blood pressure 09:42 comes down, so that to me was a very strong visual impression 09:47 that physical activity causes those endothelial cells 09:52 to line up, yes sir, and they start producing nitric oxide. 09:56 It impresses me that we need to line up as we talked about 10:00 in this series with our Creators plan. That's why we're reading 10:04 the Bible, we went back to Genesis, we talked about 10:06 how God made us to develop... to reveal His character. 10:09 How He put man in the garden, He gave him good healthy food 10:13 from the soil, the Eden Diet, he said in the sweat of your 10:17 face you will exercise to help to balance out your life within 10:21 the midst of sin now that sin has come in so lining up 10:26 with the creator and with the plan that's what will help us 10:31 with the battles of the body. 10:33 Absolutely. Right. Absolutely. So we have to cooperate with 10:38 our creator and becoming physically active to produce 10:43 that nitric oxide that's going to dilate and open those 10:46 arteries and bring down that blood pressure. 10:48 Now, let's talk about how nitric oxide is produced 10:52 because it's not just exercise something else has to be in the 10:57 mix and you guessed it, it's the dietary. Alright, okay. 11:02 It will come right back to the Eden Diet. 11:04 Now remember when the Lord said to Adam and gave him 11:07 his diet in the beginning and he said...talked about 11:11 seed-bearing plants so you don't eat seeds, do you? 11:15 I do, I sprout them. Laughter. I sprout my seeds, 11:18 I'm a big sprouter, the whole core is teaching how to sprout. 11:22 Alright. It's called Sprouting with Steve, 11:24 sproutingwithsteve.com. Alright well, that's one kind of seed, 11:27 but there are thousands of 11:29 varieties of seeds in the world that our creator has given us 11:34 and it just so happens that some of those seeds we called 11:39 legumes. Because Black Beans and Garbanzo's and Lentils 11:45 and all of those...I had just sprouted legumes today. 11:47 Lentils, I grew my Lentils in two days and put them on my 11:50 salad. Yeah as you spread seeds. So when we eat those seeds, 11:55 we get some raw materials and it just so happens that one of 12:00 the raw materials that you need absolutely need to make nitric 12:05 oxide, to dilate your arteries and bring down your 12:07 blood pressure. One of those raw materials that you need 12:11 is something you call L- Arginine, L-Arginine is 12:16 abundant in Lentils, and Garbanzo's and Pinto beans 12:25 and all those seeds if you will that it talks about in Genesis 12:30 those legumes are abundant...So if you are not getting enough 12:36 and almost non-existent in the animal-based diet. 12:43 Wo if you are eating a lot of meat and fish and chicken 12:48 and all of that and you are not getting those legumes 12:51 you don't have the raw materials to make sufficient quantities 12:57 of nitric oxide... 12:58 To dilate your blood vessels and to bring down your 13:04 blood pressure. So you've got to have the raw materials 13:07 L- Arginine is the protein, the raw material that you need 13:12 to make nitric oxide, just like when you want to make water 13:18 and you have only hydrogen, are you going to make water? 13:21 No, you have to have oxygen and the same way the body 13:25 needs to have L-Arginine to make nitric oxide, if you don't have 13:28 it, you're not going to make nitric oxide. Is L Arginine 13:30 in like sunflower seeds? Yes. Chia seeds. All those seeds. 13:35 And just a whole lot of seeds people, you can... 13:37 Like I know how to grill lentils, I take lentils, you can buy 13:41 lentils at the market for a dollar and you can put them 13:44 in a jar and you can fill the jar up with water 13:48 and soak the seeds for four or five hours and then 13:53 pour the water out and the lentils will have doubled 13:56 in size because now they are becoming active and then 13:57 the next couple of days you just put some water in and rinse it. 14:02 you just rinse them twice a day and within two days 14:04 will grow up to the top of the jar and you'll have lentil 14:09 sprouts. Which I imagine they even more L... 14:13 what's it called? L-Arginine, L- Arginine so and then you 14:16 just put the sprouts on the salad or you cook the lentils 14:18 or you eat other seeds... 14:20 Yeah. And so that's the magic key. 14:23 Sure. To lowering the blood- pressure. Sure that's the raw 14:25 material, yes, that's the raw material. 14:27 So the combination of physical activity and the raw material, 14:32 one thing again potentiates the other makes it more powerful 14:37 and the result is that you have now raw material 14:41 and physical activity that's helping to produce the 14:45 nitric oxide to bring down the blood pressure. 14:49 So it seems a little bit like with diabetes and a diabesity 14:54 like you mentioned when the blood sugar goes up 14:56 because we're not exercising enough and a lot of times 14:59 people just turn to medication to try to bring it down 15:03 but it's not really dealing with the cause. 15:04 That's not dealing with the root issue. 15:06 The same thing is true with high-blood-pressure too 15:09 in many cases or most cases, maybe not be in every case, 15:13 but in most cases the medication is not, it's just dealing with 15:18 they symptom, right, as where if we start dealing with 15:21 the roots and if we start exercising more and eating 15:24 more whole natural foods especially the seeds then 15:27 we can bring down that blood pressure without the 15:31 medication. Now we need to cover one other thing here 15:34 and that is there is something out there that will actually 15:41 shut down your nitric oxide production even if you have 15:45 the L-Arginine and you are somewhat physically active 15:49 there is something that will actually depress nitric oxide 15:54 production. And what do you think it is? 15:57 Take a guess, a wild guess. Sugar? 16:00 Laughter? You're on it. What kind of sugar? 16:04 High fructose corn syrup. You've got it. Am I right? 16:08 You are right, you got it. It's high fructose corn syrup. 16:11 Here's what happens when we drink those sweet drinks 16:15 that are so high in high fructose corn syrup. 16:19 The high fructose corn syrup produces something called 16:24 uric acid and uric acid depresses nitric oxide 16:29 production. So one of the drivers of hypertension 16:33 in America are those sweet drinks, those high fructose 16:37 corn syrup drinks, your blood - pressure will go up over time 16:40 if you're drinking that and shutting down your nitric oxide 16:44 production to dilate your arteries. 16:46 This is a huge problem in America and this is one of the 16:50 reasons why 50+ million people have hypertension, 16:54 high blood-pressure because they are depressing 16:59 their nitric oxide production through this uric acid 17:03 lever if you will and the result is the blood-pressure 17:07 is rising. It turns out also, that that high fructose 17:12 corn syrup not only depresses your nitric oxide but it causes 17:16 a very dangerous fraction of LDL cholesterol called 17:24 LDL B, a very small dense LDL cholesterol, bad cholesterol. 17:30 That dense cholesterol can get under the endothelium 17:34 into the artery and damage the arteries. 17:37 It turns out high fructose corn syrup stimulates 17:41 that LDL B production in the bloodstream. 17:47 So, it not only drives hyper- tension, it drives arterial 17:50 disease, fructose in the diet. Am I wrong, I think I've heard 17:58 that a high meat diet is also going to create...Oh yeah, 18:01 it has that LDL B...Uric acid, is that what it is? 18:05 Well, the LDL B cholesterol is the dangerous one. 18:08 You have two kinds of LDL, there's the larger one called 18:10 A, it's kind of fluffy and relatively harmless, 18:13 it doesn't do any real damage but that dense B fraction 18:19 of LDL cholesterol is the one that can get under your 18:23 endothelium, the lining of the artery, and go to the inside 18:27 and do damage. So that is the one that is increased by 18:32 high fructose corn syrup. 18:33 So we have to be careful that we are not depressing 18:38 our nitric oxide production and we're not driving heart 18:42 disease by drinking those sweet drinks with high fructose 18:45 corn syrup. And you know a little bit of history might 18:48 be appropriate here. In 1982 the government basically 18:52 told us, cut the fat in the diet, so Americans cut the fat. 18:55 But what they did to compensate was they started drinking 19:00 more sweet drinks. Sugar went up in the diet dramatically 19:04 and so we started adding it to everything from barbeque 19:10 sauce to Gatorade and so the sugar consumption went 19:14 right through the roof. 19:15 And so that super consumption, you know we supersize 19:22 everything today. When Coca Cola first came out 19:28 on the market, it was a small something like what? 19:31 Eleven ounces or something like that or I think it may have 19:35 been even less than that and now it's these big 64 Oz 19:39 things out there that people are drinking. 19:41 and creating this trouble in the human body so... 19:45 And those drinks are addicting aren't they? 19:48 Yes, they are, they're addicting. 19:50 Don't you...I think that the companies that make them 19:52 they know that. Well, I'll tell you what they do, 19:56 in the colas especially, they... Now this is interesting 20:02 they put salt in the cola. Now why would you put salt 20:06 in a cola drink? To make you more thirsty to drink cola. 20:10 Uh ha. You got it. 20:12 So you drink that whatever it is coke, Pepsi, whatever 20:17 the brand is and instead of drinking water but an hour later 20:24 that sugar, not sugar. That salt makes you thirsty 20:27 and so what happens? You want another one 20:29 and you drink another one. And that's what's happening 20:32 now you're going down and down over and over and over 20:36 until you really start to impact the body. 20:38 Shut down the nitric oxide or severely limit your nitric oxide 20:44 production driving that LDL B cholesterol that produces 20:49 heart disease and all that and we're in for real trouble 20:53 later on. Yeah, you know the Bible also talks about 20:56 it talks about many things but it tells us that we're in a... 21:00 It looks at the big picture and says we are in a... 21:01 we're in a battle, we're in a conflict between good and evil. 21:05 And there are forces that are working behind the scenes 21:09 to promote a diet and drinks and practices that are harmful 21:18 to our bodies. We're not lining up with the Creator's plan 21:23 there are forces that are trying to derail us, 21:26 to get us off track so that we slowly destroy ourselves. 21:31 And God is trying to bring us back like Psalm 23 says 21:37 which I read at the beginning where David said. 21:50 So He's, God's power is restorative, His word is 21:55 restorative when we pray and we ask for His presence and 21:59 His help, He works to restore us and then it says. 22:02 "He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His namesake. 22:05 He leads us on the path to do what is right and the benefits 22:10 of right-doing, we reap those benefits in our bodies. 22:15 And we overcome these problems that are there. 22:18 You know the prophet, Isaiah said why do spend money 22:20 for that which is not bread? Eat that which is good. 22:23 We need to do that, pay attention to that advice, 22:28 eat that which is good. 22:29 In Romans 12 it says "do not be overcome by evil." 22:38 We look at the dietary practices out there, the inactivity, 22:41 those are all the things that amount to evil that affect us 22:46 It says, "But overcome evil with good." 22:50 In other words as a Lifestyle Interventionist, 22:53 what I teach people to do is to put a good habit in place 22:58 of a bad habit. Now if you just stop the bad habit 23:01 guess what happens? 23:03 Seven more bad habits come in. You know that story to replace 23:08 the bad with the good. So you have to put the good in place of 23:12 the bad, that's the great principle of substitution 23:15 overcome evil with good. 23:19 And isn't it true as we make decisions step by step 23:23 and move the body even if it is just taking one walk. 23:26 Yes. And maybe then we'll take two walks...Right. 23:29 And we'll walk again the third time and we'll eat 23:33 an apple instead of an apple candy and we'll drink water 23:37 instead of the Coke and if we just start making these 23:40 decisions one by one by one, step by step as the famous 23:45 Chinese Proverb says the journey of a thousand miles 23:48 begins with a single step, then we're training our brain 23:51 right, we're developing new patterns to help us 23:55 to step by step by step improve our health and everything else. 24:01 Yeah, the average person out there who's not accustomed to 24:05 walking, they may be intimidated by me when I say 24:10 30 minutes twice a day. Listen, when I counsel people 24:13 I tell them this, I don't care if you can't walk an hour 24:17 I am not concerned with that. Or even thirty minutes 24:19 I want you to just start, can you walk five minutes? 24:24 Uh, yeah, I can walk, that's where you start. 24:27 Five minutes, but I want you in two or three days to 24:31 go up by one or two minutes because your body's tolerance 24:35 for exercise is going to increase as you do it every day. 24:39 So the first day they go out five minutes and they come back 24:42 and, I'm so tired, I can't, the next day we do 24:45 the same, the next day we do the same, but by the third 24:48 or the fourth day now, you know, I'm not quite so winded anymore 24:52 so now we go up by a minute, two minutes, and you do that 24:56 until you get up to 30 minutes then you stop. 24:58 Now you go for 30 minutes twice a day and so we start 25:03 gradually. That's how God works. 25:05 He reminds me of the minister I listened to him a long time ago 25:08 and he said, he was an old man and he said if God wants you 25:11 to take ten steps and you're on step one, 25:15 he said what is the most important step for you? 25:18 And obviously, it's step two. So then God leads us step three 25:24 and we need to make these changes gradually but 25:27 we can do it if we pray, if we read His word 25:32 and if we ask for help. If we learn the benefits 25:34 of exercise and eating a good diet, more natural foods 25:38 and getting sunlight, drinking water, the basics our body will 25:44 be blessed and we'll be able to win many of these 25:50 body battles that we're fighting every day. 25:53 It's true, it's sort of like the story of Jacob you know 25:56 when he's going back to his brother and back to the 25:58 homeland. He said you guys go ahead, I'm going to go with 26:03 those who are moving a little more slowly here. 26:06 And that's how God works, He works with us, 26:08 we're moving slow and He knows we can't go too fast here 26:13 so He just goes right along with us, helps us step by step 26:18 as you pointed out. That's right so as we get down 26:21 to the end here, here's my glass cleaner, Caution, 26:26 Contents Under Pressure. We all need to be cautious 26:31 of the forces in this world that are building up pressure 26:36 and are trying to bring us down and once again 26:40 Psalm 37:7 "It says rest in the Lord and wait patiently 26:46 for Him".
