00:27 Hello, you have reached the final program of Body Battles
00:32 this is Part 8 and we've been through seven programs 00:34 as we talked about on the screen here how important it is that 00:38 we protect our health and we avoid dying early. 00:41 Some people think well, my time comes, that's it, 00:46 I'm going to die when I die. 00:48 But the Bible actually tells us something very interesting 00:51 in Ecclesiastes Chapter 7, it says, it's talking about 00:55 how...In verse 16, Why destroy yourself. 00:57 Verse 17 says Don't be foolish, why die before your time? 01:03 So, we could die before our time because of being foolish 01:08 and not following good habits. At that point really, 01:13 we've lost the war against our bodies by our own choices. 01:17 We hope that this series that we've done will be a blessing 01:22 to you and help you to live longer to make better choices, 01:26 not gooder choices, but better choices so you can be here 01:30 as long as possible. We are at our last program, 01:33 the title we've chosen for today is called the 01:37 Attitude of Gratitude. We're going to talk about the 01:40 powerful health benefits of actually being happy. 01:45 Which comes from trusting God, knowing His love, and His grace 01:49 and His goodness. 01:50 So my guest again for the final program here is Jack McIntosh, 01:54 Jack is near an expert on nutrition, health, the body, 01:59 you're a Health Educator and you're also a Lifestyle Coach 02:04 which we'll talk about at the end. 02:05 I like that one better. Lifestyle Coach. 02:08 Not so much. Well, we all have... somebody said once, the biggest 02:12 room in the world is the room for improvement. Indeed. 02:15 So we all have room for improvement and now we need 02:19 a lot of help from above to make progress. 02:22 Yes, we do. So Attitude of Gratitude. 02:25 You mentioned, I said what Bible verse do you want to 02:28 focus on for this program? and you directed me to 02:33 Proverbs chapter 17:22. 02:36 The Bible says, A merry heart does good like a medicine: 02:41 It's medicinal and helps in healing. And the rest of the 02:45 verse says: but a broken spirit dries the bones. 02:49 So let's talk about that. 02:51 Yes, the average person reading that would say well there's 02:57 no science there, that's just a nice thing that appears 03:01 in the Bible. An ancient book. Hold on, hold on, 03:04 turns out there is a lot of science behind that statement. 03:07 That a merry heart does good like a medicine, particularly 03:12 that merry heart's influence on the soldiers within the body 03:18 that we call the immune system. We're talking about body battles 03:22 and it turns out that a merry heart is reinforcement 03:27 for the troops that are defending the body, 03:31 the immune system. So we're going to look at that 03:35 a little bit today. Okay. 03:36 But this topic that we are on, draws heavily from the Bible 03:41 and from a book that was actually published about 1903 03:45 called "Ministry of Healing" and there is a lot of wisdom 03:50 in that book because it quotes heavily from the Bible also. 03:55 But it makes a statement, it says "pure air, sunlight, 03:58 abstemious which is a 19th century word for self-control 04:05 Staying away from things like that. Exercise, proper diet, 04:09 the use of water, trust in divine power, it says, 04:11 these are the true remedies. 04:13 Now you only need a remedy if something is wrong, right? 04:16 In other words, these are the therapeutic agencies that God 04:21 has provided for us. When we make a change in our diets, 04:25 when we breathe fresh air instead of cigarette smoke 04:28 and things like that. 04:29 We do wonderful things and they are therapeutic 04:33 but in that same boat, there's another statement and 04:36 that statement says: "A merry rejoicing heart doeth good 04:42 like a medicine." Now the author is quoting from Proverbs 17:22 04:46 that you just read. And then she adds gratitude, rejoicing, 04:51 benevolence, trust in God's love and care, 04:56 these are health's greatest safeguard...Now remember 05:01 in the former statement, it says these are the true remedies, 05:05 but in this statement it says, the greatest safeguard. 05:08 So what we are going to explore is, how is it that gratitude 05:13 rejoicing and all those things can be such a safeguard? 05:16 One of the ways that this has been demonstrated is by the 05:23 experience of a man that published a book back in the 05:27 eighty's, his name was Norman Cousins and he wrote a book 05:30 called "Anatomy of an illness." And he tells the story of how 05:35 he was in Russia, I think he was in Leningrad and he 05:38 came down with a rare collagen disease that they didn't 05:42 give him very much hope, for. 05:44 They were pretty sure that he would not recover 05:48 he was admitted to the hospital, he flew from Leningrad to 05:51 New York, admitted to the hospital, came down with this 05:54 problem and in the hospital he was getting more and more 05:58 depressed every day and he said to his doctor, 06:00 you know what, I just don't like what is happening to me 06:03 here, I'm just getting down and down. 06:05 Can you bring me some videos or something that will help me 06:08 lift my spirits here a little bit? 06:09 And so the doctor brought him in some videos, 06:14 I think it may have been Candid Camera or something 06:17 like that from the '70s or whatever it was 06:20 and so he began to watch those daily and he makes a statement 06:28 that I want to read to you, this is a very interesting 06:30 statement and it says this. 06:32 I made the joyous discovery that 10 minutes of genuine 06:37 belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me 06:42 at least two hours of pain-free sleep, because he was in a lot 06:46 of pain and he couldn't sleep. 06:48 Ten minutes of belly laughter gives him two hours of sleep, 06:54 restful sleep, and so the other thing that they began to notice 06:59 is that each time that he would do one of these 07:02 laughter sessions, that his SED rate would drop. 07:06 They would measure it before the laughter session 07:08 and after because they noticed that something was happening, 07:12 they didn't know quite what. But looking at the SED rate 07:14 which is an indication of how sick you are. 07:16 The SED rate, every time the laughing session happened 07:20 would go down by five points, we thought wow, 07:23 that's interesting. 07:24 And then, they did something else that was a little different, 07:29 they administered vitamin D, quite a bit 10 grams actually, 07:33 and that time the SED rate dropped nine points 07:36 and so he was now starting to sleep better... 07:41 Did you say vitamin D or vitamin C. Vitamin C. 07:43 I think you said vitamin D. 07:44 Did I say D? I stand corrected. 07:47 Vitamin C. His sleep was improving in quality 07:51 the fever was coming down, and so, he was on his way 07:57 to recovery. Just those two simple things. 08:00 Laughter and some vitamin C. So we know that these simple 08:07 things can have an enormous effect on our health and on our 08:11 immune system in particular. 08:13 There is actually research from Loma Linda University 08:18 on the effects of mirthful laughter is what Dr. Cannarella 08:22 calls it. When we laugh, the brain releases endorphins 08:29 which are sort of like feel good hormones, you feel good. 08:33 Happy hormones. There very similar to morphine actually 08:37 and the brain releases very small amounts, 08:40 the Creator knows just how much to release, right? 08:42 and we feel good, we feel happy to be alive when the endorphins 08:48 are released. Endorphins not only in response to laughter 08:52 but guess what? When you get out there and you're physically 08:58 active, guess what happens, you get a little reward in the 09:01 brain for doing that the endorphins are released. 09:04 And so we can learn from that from these physiological effects 09:11 of physical activity and laughter and things like that. 09:15 that good things are happening in the body. 09:18 But what kinds of good things are happening? 09:21 Well Dr. Cannarella comes to our rescue on this, 09:23 listen to what she says over here I'm going to read a little 09:28 statement. She says, she talks about the beneficial effects 09:33 of mirthful laughter. Now we down here on this level 09:38 we would call that a good belly laugh, right? 09:40 But she refers to that as mirthful laughter, I like that. 09:45 She says, notice, increased activation and proliferation 09:50 of T lymphocytes, let me translate that. 09:53 The T lymphocytes which are responsible for knocking out 09:57 cancer cells. The good soldiers. Those are one of the prime 10:01 defenders, right? Soldiers. The T-cells become more active 10:06 in the presence of laughter and these endorphins 10:10 and they increase in number, proliferation means they 10:14 increase in number, so this is absolutely wonderful. 10:19 It's kind of like if the commanding officer laughs 10:22 then the soldiers multiply and do better. 10:25 Yes, but not only the T- lymphocytes, we have other cells 10:29 in the immune system called natural killer cells. 10:33 Now these are the pit bulls of the immune system 10:37 and they go after those cancer cells and what she noticed 10:41 was that there was increased destruction of tumor cells 10:46 that is cancer cells, by natural killer cells. 10:50 Who knew, laughter produced the endorphins, 10:54 now, how does this actually work? Now it turns out the T-cells 10:58 have endorphin receptors on them, so in other words they 11:03 interact with endorphins. And the first time I heard this 11:07 back in 1982, I went to Loma Linda at a convention there, 11:10 a symposium and I thought wow, T- cells have endorphin receptors 11:18 so when you laugh your T-cells get more active and they 11:21 increase in number, this is absolutely wonderful 11:24 that's Proverbs 17:22, A merry heart does good 11:29 like a medicine, this is therapy. 11:31 I'm sure, a lot of people might be watching this right now 11:34 they might be thinking, there are so many bad things 11:36 in this world, how can I be happy? 11:38 This morning I was on the phone with somebody before 11:41 I came over here and he was talking about the different 11:45 things that are going on in the world and how they're 11:47 really bad and this is coming and this is happening 11:49 and this, this, this. 11:50 And he wanted me to watch a different video 11:52 and I told him, I'm just gonna- I can't watch all these videos 11:57 right now, we're filming today and I'm just going to give it 12:00 to God and I'm just going to trust Him 12:02 and I'm going to be happy. 12:04 I've been through dark days in my life and I've learned 12:08 like you said...the attitude of gratitude. 12:12 And I found that the reason why I can be happy in the midst 12:18 of things that are going on that are bad 12:21 is that I have faith in God, that God is a God of love. 12:25 The Bible tells us 1John 4:8, that God is love and that He 12:30 cares for me. There's another verse in Peter, I think its 12:32 5:8, something like that, or 4:8 it says cast all your cares 12:36 upon Him because He cares for you. Yes! 12:39 So to know that there is a God in heaven who loves us 12:42 who cares for us, who gave His Son to pay the price 12:44 for our sins, who rose from the dead and He can save us 12:49 by His grace. And He has a heavenly home ahead for us, 12:53 when all the dust settles and when Jesus comes back 12:57 and He gets rid of evil... 12:58 It's that big picture that no matter what happens 13:02 no matter how bad things get, God loves me, 13:04 He is going to take care of me if I follow Him 13:06 and choose Him, I have a hope of a fantastic future. 13:10 And so that give me... It puts a smile on my face 13:13 Yeah. It gives me a reason to be happy and the more I smile 13:18 the more I am happy then those endorphins are clicking 13:21 and those soldiers are strengthening and it really does 13:25 like Proverbs says, "A merry heart does good like a medicine." 13:28 And we need to have that faith in God and His love 13:31 in order to have that positive attitude. 13:33 Yes, that's absolutely true, I love to read Revelation 21 13:37 because Revelation 21 is so hopeful. 13:41 "I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven 13:46 and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 13:49 and then it says God Himself descends from heaven 13:52 and dwells with us". Right! This is the hope this 13:56 makes you happy, joyful... That's right and 13:58 Revelation 21:4, I've shared this many times in seminars 14:02 it says "There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, 14:05 nor crying, nor pain, for the former thing have 14:08 passed away. And He who sat upon the throne said behold, 14:12 I make all things new," and He said write this down 14:15 for these words are true and faithful. 14:18 Take it to the bank. That's right, take it to the bank. 14:21 It's more certain than the dollar 14:23 or the ground that we walk on. Indeed, indeed. 14:25 Is God's word and His promises. 14:27 I mentioned in the beginning that this conversation that 14:32 we're having today draws heavily from the book 14:34 Ministry of Healing, I was to share one more thing with you 14:37 that to me is priceless and it's a statement that talks about 14:44 the most important thing that we can do for our health... 14:48 I was going in the wrong direction there... 14:51 Let me find it...Here's what it says I think its page 251 14:56 of the book Ministry of Healing. I've read that book, 14:58 that is some wonderful book. Fantastic. 15:01 I went through some real dark struggles, everybody 15:05 goes through struggles... I remember reading 15:06 this chapter is called Mind Cure. 15:09 Mind Cure, that's where this comes from. 15:10 I have read that chapter over and over again and it really... 15:13 It helped me put a smile on my face. 15:16 That's where this whole topic came from was that chapter 15:21 called "Mind Cure" and it is wonderful. 15:24 Here's what it says: Page 251 of the book Ministry of Healing. 15:30 I hope everybody who is watching this goes to wherever you get 15:35 your books and orders Ministry of Healing. 15:39 The order on Amazon, I don't if Whitehorse Media, 15:42 I don't remember whether that's in our store or not 15:45 but if it's not, they can go to Amazon.com and just 15:47 type in Ministry of Healing by Ellen G White 15:50 and they can order that book. 15:51 I bet you it will be in the store after today. 15:53 Here's what it says: 15:56 Nothing. Now it begins with that is uncompromised 16:01 it says Nothing. "Nothing tends more to promote health, 16:05 of body and of soul than does a spirit of gratitude 16:11 and praise." 16:12 Nothing, not even your diet, not even physical activity. 16:17 Or exercise. Or those other things that we talked about. 16:21 In other words, this is the pinnacle, it's not that those 16:24 things are not important, they are very important. 16:26 This is the pinnacle of what we can do to protect our health. 16:30 Nothing tends more to promote health of body and soul 16:35 then does a spirit of gratitude and praise. 16:39 This is why the Apostle Paul says Rejoice in the Lord 16:43 when everything is going well. Is that what he says? 16:46 No, he says Rejoice in the Lord Always. 16:49 Even when things are going bad we are to rejoice in the Lord. 16:53 Now here is the rest of the statement. 16:55 It is a positive duty to resist melancholy, discontented thoughts 17:03 and feelings, as much a duty as it is to pray. 17:08 Wow! I read that and it made my hair stand on end. 17:12 My hair stands on end anyway but it really stood on end. 17:15 So resist the negative thoughts and be thankful to God 17:19 for His goodness and love no matter what happens 17:22 Trust in God's love and care that is so critical. 17:28 Bring us through whatever comes our way. 17:31 And so this is the kind of thing that we can rely on. 17:36 The other thing that I think is really important for us 17:40 to do is to reach out to others. 17:42 You know, when we are stuck in ourselves and we're just 17:46 thinking about all the negatives, one of the best 17:50 things to do is to say okay, I need to reach out and 17:55 help someone else. Make a phone call, maybe you can't 17:58 go to someone's house, but you can pick up the phone, 18:01 how are you today? 18:03 Encourage them, these are things and guess what happens to your 18:07 spirit when you encourage someone else? 18:10 It lifts up your spirit. Yeah, I read that recently, 18:12 something like if you are helpless, help someone else. 18:16 Yes, absolutely. I think if we stop thinking just about 18:18 ourselves, try to think about somebody else, 18:20 there's lots of people around us that have needs... 18:23 There's plenty of work to do to help encourage other people 18:26 and in lifting up somebody else, we lift up ourselves. 18:30 Yes, and I have been trying over the course of the last 18:34 year or two to follow the advice of Jesus, 18:38 He said something in Matthew six, He said, but seek 18:42 first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these 18:47 things will be added unto you. 18:49 So when I get up in the morning I am anxious to get to my desk 18:52 and start making calls and oh, I've got this to do 18:55 go to Home Depot and fix this and do that and to... 18:59 And very often the Lord has to stop me and say are you 19:03 seeking first the kingdom of God and oh yeah, Lord 19:06 I promise to do this and so I change my attitude and 19:12 now I'm focused... Who can I call, who can I encourage 19:17 today? The other day... this happened to me 19:20 and I made three calls and I can't tell you what a blessing. 19:26 because I was speaking that particular day, the next day, 19:32 and we had a wonderful time together and he stayed 19:35 for our fellowship dinner and I talked to two other people 19:39 and I just felt so good after that the day just sailed along, 19:45 you know, it's just so wonderful. 19:47 That reminds me of my dad, my dad died at 89 19:50 a couple of years ago and his body was falling apart 19:54 and he would tell me, let's make today a kingdom day. 19:57 And he had a list of people that he would call with his 20:01 crippled fingers, he would get on his cell phone and he would 20:05 call people and he would pray with people and he was just 20:08 focused on helping other people. 20:11 And my dad died a happy man. 20:13 The man that was with him when he died, I wasn't actually... 20:17 I was with him many times but not at the moment of death. 20:20 At the moment of death a man that was there told me 20:24 that he grabbed this man's hand and he said halleluiah 20:28 and he died. And that was his last word, halleluiah 20:33 and he died. My dad had a hope of a resurrection, hope in God, 20:38 hope in Jesus, and he lived that life of unselfishness. 20:42 My grandmother was like that. When her mother died 20:46 she said Zion, Zion, what a pretty place, apparently the Lord 20:53 gave her a little look, something you know. 20:56 But people like that are the happiest people on the planet 21:00 they are not focused on self, they look to meet the needs 21:06 of others and what a privilege that is. 21:09 That's the life of Jesus... That's right, and they 21:11 live longer and they're happier. They live longer... 21:13 and have a better hope. 21:14 Well, Jack, we're running out of time, I want to... 21:16 We're in our last program and I want to mention a few 21:18 resources that have been watching this eight-part series. 21:22 And then I will give you some time to talk about your 21:24 coaching. Whitehorse Media has a book that I...I wrote this 21:29 book and it deals with a lot of health principles that I've 21:32 learned and physicians have endorsed this book it's called 21:34 End Times Health War and it deals with all kinds of 21:37 body issues and how to build your health just like 21:40 we have been talking about in this series. 21:41 I also have a key to interesting nutrition and then Jack 21:45 as you known I eat a lot of sprout salads 21:48 and I teach a whole course on how to sprout. 21:51 And if you are interested in growing your own food 21:53 in your own kitchen, you can just check out sprouting with 21:56 steve.com, that's our main website on that 21:59 sproutingwithsteve.com to learn how to grow organic live food 22:03 in your own home. And Jack, you also, you're a coach 22:06 and why don't you tell us a little bit about your services 22:09 your website before we wind this up so, some people might 22:12 want to connect with you and have you coach them along 22:15 and make some positive life- style choices. 22:18 Sure. So, what I do as a health educator is I facilitate 22:25 lifestyle change. Sometimes people have trouble with 22:29 getting going on the simple things that we've been 22:34 talking about. You know it seems like a mountain to them 22:38 sometimes, it seems simple to you and me but...because 22:41 we've done it, but to people who are just starting 22:44 it seems like a mountain sometimes. 22:46 So my rule is to facilitate change and that's with a 22:49 lifestyle interventionist does. 22:52 So, we were talking before about physical activity, so what I do 22:55 is I say okay, let's get your cell phone out and set a time 22:58 when you're going to take a walk and when you get up 23:03 in the morning. I want you the night before to put 23:07 a glass on the bathroom sink and that glass has water 23:12 from the water cooler, purified water and that glass is to 23:16 remind you that you are to drink that water in the morning 23:20 to thin the blood, so that's what I do. I coach people 23:23 and how to make this happen because if for some people 23:29 they do it for a little while and it's here hit and miss 23:32 and all that and what I do also is I create accountability 23:36 so you need to call me once a week because I want to know 23:41 how you are doing and in the beginning it's every 2 or 3 days 23:44 until you get going on your habits, the proper habits. 23:48 On the refrigerator is a little tracking device and that 23:55 tracking device, you check off, did you walk today? 23:58 did you drink pure water? did you have a positive 24:02 attitude of gratitude? That's one of the little things 24:04 you have to check off. Because it's very important 24:08 that the brain is happy. Because when the brain is happy 24:13 it vanishes depression and you feel good and feel like 24:16 you know what, I'm making progress here, that's great. 24:19 Do you feel good? Now, just quickly, any quick stories 24:23 of anyone that you've coached that has. Oh, I've coached many 24:26 people...A lot of people that I coach I don't even have a 24:29 formal relationship with them. 24:30 I remember once up there in Washougal, Washington 24:34 I was at a little church gathering by the river 24:38 after church fellowship meal/ dinner and somebody I was 24:45 talking to and I learned he was diabetic and he says to me, 24:48 what can I do for my diabetes? 24:51 And so I said to him, well, you need a walking program 24:54 first of all and you need to be eating the Eden diet 24:59 and to drink water and those kinds of things, 25:02 and I said if you walk, and you put these large leg muscles 25:08 to work, it will put out those insulin receptors, 25:11 brand new ones and that will draw that sugar right out of 25:15 your blood and bring down your blood-sugar naturally. 25:18 He said, does that really work? I said well you need to do it. 25:21 Just do it. So, he did it and his high blood sugar went away, 25:28 he's no longer diabetic, in fact I just asked him about 25:33 five weeks ago to put a little testimonial on my website 25:37 his name is Gary, and so Gary did that. 25:40 But somewhere along 3 to 4 months later 25:44 I said how are you doing, are you still walking? 25:47 Well, I'm not quite...I said listen, if you don't get back 25:52 the diabetes is going to come back, you better get going... 25:54 so he did and now he's diabetes free, it's wonderful. Wow. 25:57 Wonderful, well that's fantastic so if you want to learn more 26:00 about Jack's ministry and maybe have him as your coach 26:02 just check out Idowell.org, idowell.org. 26:07 Well, we're at the end, I hope this has been a blessing to you 26:10 for your body and the Body Battles and that you will be 26:14 blessed again.
