00:06 Sermon #B703 - Watch God Work
00:20 Dr Byrd: I would like to invite you to take your Bibles and turn with me to the book of first Samuel.
00:24 We're going to Samuel 1, and we're going to go to chapter 17 first, Samuel chapter 17.
00:31 And we're going to go to verse number 40, 1 Samuel chapter 17. And we are going to verse number 40 today.
00:41 And we are going to watch God work today. 1 Samuel chapter 17, verse number 40. I believe you have it right now.
00:47 And so we want to read it. And you are hearing the word of God says 1 Samuel chapter 17, verse number 40. ''
00:53 And he took his staff in his hand and he chosen five smooth stones out of the Brook, put them in a separate bag,
01:03 which he had even in the script. And his slave was in his hand and he drew near to the philisti- -ne, verse 41:
01:13 And the philistine came on and drew me here at the David. The man that bare the shield went before him. Verse 42:
01:21 And when the philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him for, he was, but youth and ready and of a fair countenance.
01:31 And the Philistines said unto to David, "am I a dog', thou comes to me with staves and the Philistines cursed David by his gods.
01:41 Verse 44: And the Philistines said unto David, 'come to me and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air
01:48 and to the beasts of the field. Verse 45 says,' then said David to the Philistine, "thou to me with a sword
01:57 and with a spear and with a shield. But I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel,
02:07 whom thou has to defy this day, will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand? And I will smite thee and take a divine hand from me.
02:16 And I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, the wild beast of the earth,
02:22 that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel and all of this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword
02:33 and spear for the battle is the Lord's. And he will give you into our hands. And it came to pass when the Philistines arose
02:42 and came and drew nice to meet name it, that David hastened and ran toward the army to meet the Philistines.
02:48 And David pushed his hand in his bag and took thence a stone and slang it
02:53 and smote the Philistine in his forehead That the stone sunk into His forehead
02:59 and he fell upon his face to the earth. Verse 50. So David prevailed over the philistine with the slate
03:06 and with the stone and smote the Philistine and slew him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.
03:17 Again, today, we challenge you with the message. What is God work?. Father in heaven.
03:24 Right now we ask your Holy ghost to come in his place. We ask your Holy to go over the internet, airwaves and television,
03:30 airwaves and computer and laptop and smartphone, airwaves, and God, because you're an omnipresent God,
03:37 which means you can be all places at the same time. Speak right now to your servants. Hide me behind your cross.
03:42 Forgive us of our sins. And may this message penetrate the hearts, the minds, bodies, souls, and spirits of your people
03:50 and Lord when the appeal time comes, move by your power. And I pray the minimum of boys and girls with sprinted their lives to you.
03:58 Forgive me of my sins and we pray this prayer in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.
04:07 Watch God work. Watch God work. Now the story of David and Goliath is one of the most popular stories in the Bible.
04:25 Whether you are a Bible-believing Jesus loving church-going, or I should say virtual church-going member or not.
04:35 Everybody knows something about David and Goliath. This story has been used throughout the ages.
04:43 It has been used throughout the world to illustrate the ability of the small to defeat the big, the lesser to overcome the greater,
04:52 the minor, to beat the major and the underdog to defy all odds and take down the heavily favoured from sports to business to life.
05:03 It's in this story that we are reminded that giants do die. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
05:13 I wish somebody knew what I was talking about. Now, giants,
05:17 you need to understand can be many different things from bosses to coworkers, to the Coronavirus, to cancer,
05:27 to problematic family members, to so-called friends, giants are obstacles that are in our way,
05:36 but in the name of Jesus giants do fall now for those who don't know the story, I have trouble remembering the story.
05:45 Let me spend a few minutes reminding you of the story. David was the youngest of eight sons.
05:52 He had two primary jobs. Number one, he was a shepherd number two.
05:58 He was to bring supplies to his three brothers who were in Israel's army on the front lines of battle.
06:07 And after David would take the supplies to his three brothers in the Israelite army, he would bring reports back to his father,
06:16 Jesse, about the wellbeing of his brothers.
06:20 Now first Samuel chapter 17 tells us that at a specific time when David showed up to take supplies to brothers,
06:31 he saw a battle formation. He saw the philistines standing on one Hill. I saw the Israelites standing on another Hill
06:45 and in the middle of the two Hills was the Valley of Eli between them. He also saw that there was this gladiator champion,
06:57 the gigantic soldier from Gath who was apart of the Philistine, his name Goliath nine feet, nine inches tall.
07:09 He wore a bronze helmet, bronze armour that weighed 125 pounds. He carried a bronze sword that was slung
07:19 between his shoulders and his spear shaft was like a weaver's beam with the iron point of his spirit, weighing 15 pounds.
07:29 Goliath shouted on this day to the Israelites; 'Why do you come up and line up in battle formation?
07:40 He said, am I not a Philistines? And are you not, servant of Saul. Choose one of your men to come out here and fight against me.
07:53 If he wins the battle and kills me, then we will be your servants but if I win the battle and I kill him,
08:02 you will be our servants.' Goliath. This Philistine bully taunted Israel with these same words for 40 days:
08:15 'bring me, somebody, to fight'. Now when the King of Israel Saul heard these words from Goliath, Saul was fearful, scared,
08:27 and afraid, but David wasn't scared. David was not fearful. David realised that fear was just a state of mind.
08:41 David realized that fear was nothing but false evidence appearing real. David hears Goliath and David then
08:51 because he's fearless begins. Nash. Is there a reward for the defeat? Why are people letting this happen?
09:01 What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel
09:09 and just who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God,
09:17 let me tell you something. There comes a time in the life every now and then you got to speak up and speak out.
09:24 You can't let the enemies of God defy the people of God. You see. It's one thing to talk about me,
09:32 but you're not going to talk about my God. It's one thing to defy me, but you are not going to defy my God.
09:40 You are not going to disrespect my God, but David's brothers hear David talking and they rebuke him.
09:48 Hush up, boy, be quiet. You're talking too much. And you don't know what you're talking about.
09:55 David was a teenager. David was smaller,
10:00 but what that David lacks in size, David had in faith and in the heart. A heart that trusted in the Lord and not himself,
10:11 a heart that would not let his God be disrespected, a heart that would not let his God be defined.
10:19 And so there are a lot of things I learned from this story, but I just want to share a few today.
10:24 And I want to begin number one by saying, I have learned in this story,
10:26 that the giants in our lives will never be defeated by our own abilities. Let me say that again.
10:34 The giants in our lives will never be defeated by our own abilities. Now David took fighting Goliath personally
10:46 because this battle was not against him, but this battle was against the Lord. Are you hearing what I am saying?
10:51 I said earlier that we call this story, the story of David and Goliath, but just like I said,
10:57 it probably could have been called the story of Saul and Goliath. Truthfully, this story should be called Jehovah against Goliath.
11:05 Because when you look at this fight, this fight was a Mitch match. From the beginning. David said to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17: 45,
11:15 we read it earlier; 'You come against me with a dagger, spear and a sword,
11:20 but I come against you in the name of the Lord of hosts in the name of the God of Israel's armies.' Goliath, couldn't be defeated.
11:28 Hear me well by David's own means this defeat would come from the Lord. And the sooner we acknowledged this,
11:36 the sooner we recognize this, the quicker we can defeat our giant, that the battle is not yours, but the battle is the Lord's.
11:46 Understand my friends. The devil is not afraid of you. The devil is afraid of the God that is inside of you and greater is he,
11:54 that is in you than the devil that is in the world. If God, before us, who can be against us,
12:01 no weapon formed against us is going to prosper. It won't work. Number one, the giants in our lives will never be defeated
12:10 by our own abilities.
12:12 Number two, your past has prepared you for what is to come. I said, your past has prepared you for what is to come.
12:26 Why was David so brave? Why did David have so much courage? Saul told David in 1 Samuel 17: 33, you can't go fight this Philistine.
12:41 You're just a child. He's a warrior. Goliath has been a warrior since he was young,
12:48 but I love David's answer. In 1 Samuel 17:34 - 37 David says 'your servant has been tending his father's sheep'
12:56 Whenever a lion or whatever a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock. David said, 'I went after it.'
13:03 He said, 'I struck it. Now I rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I grabbed it by its fur.
13:11 I struck it down and killed it. Your servant has killed lions. Your servant has killed bears.
13:18 And this uncircumcised Philistine is going to be just like them for, he has defied the armies of living God.'
13:25 I wish I had a witness in his place. 'The Lord who rescued me', David said from the paw of the lion,
13:31 the Lord who rescued me from the paw of the bear, what rescued me from the hand of the Philistines.
13:37 So Saul then said to David.' all right young man, go and may the Lord be with you. David had preparation.
13:45 The Lord had prepared him for this. For many of us, the Lord has been preparing us for the battles that we're going to face.
13:56 We often ask ourselves, Lord, why did you allow me to go through this back there?
14:04 And God says, I allowed you to go through this back there because I was trying to prepare you for something up here.
14:10 You all do not hear what I am saying.
14:12 God is preparing you for something greater. And as we near the end of time, and we're wondering why all these trials,
14:18 why all these calamities, why all this chaos, God is getting us ready. God is getting us ready for the greater battle.
14:26 We're going to face at the end of time. So if you can't handle this now, I don't know how you're going to handle what's coming.
14:31 So God is preparing us. Number three, I have learned, do not try to wear someone else's armour.
14:42 Do not try to wear somebody else's armour. First, Samuel 17:38 through 40, it states.
14:47 Then Saul had his own military clothes put on David. He put on a bronze's helmet on David's head and had him put on armour.
14:56 Verse number 39 says David strapped his sword on over the military clothes. And the Bible says he tried to walk,
15:03 but he wasn't used to him. So what David say? David said, 'I cannot walk in these. I'm not used to all of this.'
15:12 So the Bible says David took all that stuff off. You see Saul's armour is not what got David to where he was.
15:22 You all do not hear what I am saying. I said Saul's armour did not get David to where he was. Somebody is still not getting this.
15:29 I cannot wear somebody else's suit. That suit was made. That suit was tailored for them. And just like somebody,
15:38 I cannot wear their suit. Somebody else cannot wear my suit because this suit was made. This suit was tailored just for me.
15:46 You cannot fight somebody else in somebody else's armour. Their armour was made for them. Your armour was made for you.
15:54 What God has for you. It is for you. And what God has for me, it is for me. 1 Samuel 17: 40 says David took his staff in his hand.
16:06 He chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his pouch, in his shepherd bag. Then with his sling in his hand,
16:17 he approached the philistine Sometimes friends of mine, when we are facing our giants. We want to look around
16:23 and use the resources that have become available to us. But this is where we have to be careful.
16:27 Yes, we have come a long way. Yes, we are doing better now than when we did before. But don't you forget how you got where you are.
16:33 Do not forget. It was God who got you to the point where you are now. Don't get the big head and think you got there on your own.
16:39 Number four, I learned when the giant is down, number four, when the giant is down, finish him. I said, when the giant is down,
16:56 finished him off. You all do not hear what I am saying now.
16:58 No, the rest of the story quickly, I am moving. Verse 43 says that Goliath asks David, 'I am a dog?
17:05 that thou comes to me with sticks and stones?' David's response to Goliath in verse number 45, 'thou comes to me with a sword
17:12 and with a spear, with a shield. But I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts.
17:18 I come to thee under the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou has defied, this day, will the Lord delivered me into my hand.
17:28 And I will smite thee and take thy head from thee, I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day.
17:33 I took the fowls of the air into the wild beast of the earth that all the earth may know there is a God In Israel.
17:39 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear for the battle is the Lord's.
17:45 And he will give you into our hands. Now, David, we know the story then took a stone, put it in a sling,
17:55 slung that sling to the forehead of Goliath and the giant dropped dead. Now the story is not over.
18:10 Remember now David had a sling. David had some rocks. David did not have a sword,
18:17 but yet David said in verse 46 that 'he takes Goliath's head'. So what does David do? David takes Goliath word,
18:30 cuts off Goliath's head and the Philistines then the Bible says they run and flee. David, not only knocked Goliath down,
18:43 but David killed Goliath, but not only did he kill Goliath. David took Goliath sword,
18:54 cut his head off so that Goliath would never come back anymore. When God works through you to defeat your giants
19:07 and you knock them down in the name of Jesus, I dare you to finish them off. So they never come back again.
19:15 I wish I had a witness in his place. We preach sermons on David and Goliath. We teach lessons on David and Goliath.
19:23 We sing songs on David and Goliath and we make these sermons. We make these stories. We make these songs applicable to our lives
19:31 and tell people that God will defeat your Goliath. God will defeat your giants. God will defeat your enemies.
19:38 We tell them number one, the giants in our lives will never be defeated by our own abilities.
19:43 We tell them your past has prepared you for what is to come. We tell them, do not try to wear someone else's armour.
19:49 We tell them when a giant is down, finish him off.
19:55 But this week I was reading and there was a lesson in this story that I want to hammer home today.
20:04 And this point is the meat of today's message because you probably heard points one through four before,
20:09 but this is the meat of our message today. And that it is this. Sometimes our enemies, sometimes our giants,
20:23 sometimes our Goliath are put in our lives path to bless us. Let me say that one more time.
20:35 Our enemies are put in our life paths to bless us. Now. Think about it. I am going to make this point.
20:44 Then I am going to sit down. If it weren't for Goliath, David would have only been known as a shepherd boy.
20:54 If it were not for Goliath, David would have only been some unknown youth tending his father's sheep.
21:04 If it were not for Goliath, David would have just been a modern-day. Israelite Pathfinder. If it were not for Goliath,
21:15 David probably wouldn't have gone on to become the King of Israel. Goliath was strategically placed in David's path,
21:25 not to defeat David, but to promote David y'all don't hear what I'm saying. Goliath was created for David's purpose.
21:35 Without Goliath. David never would have become King without Goliath. David would have never taken the throne.
21:42 What then may look like a setback. It is really a set up to get you to your throne, to get you to your destiny,
21:51 to get you to where God wants you in this life to fulfil his purposes.
21:57 It is all a part of God's plan to get you where you supposed to be.
22:05 In fact, somebody right now, you ought to thank God right now for all the Goliath in your life, that God ordained
22:13 and allowed to come across your path. They were created to promote you. Thank you, Jesus, and push you into your purpose.
22:21 And so that's why I say today. When I think about this story, watch God work with the devil means for evil.
22:29 God means for good watch God work. Even though we may not understand, you just watch God work.
22:36 Even though you may see things differently, watch God work. Even though you might've done it another way, watch God work.
22:44 Even though you may feel like giving up, watch God work. Even though you may ask, why do the wicked prosper? Watch God work.
22:52 Even though you are being talked about, watch God work. Even though you're being criticized, watch God work.
22:58 Even though sickness is running through your body, I dare you to watch God work. Even though you have lost your friends,
23:04 watch God work. Even though you might have made some mistakes in your life, what God worked in.
23:10 And though you're dealing with the Goliath, watch God work. Your giants were created to promote you
23:16 and push you into your purpose. So go ahead, face your giant and Watch God work.
23:25 Your enemies, friends come not to crush you,
23:30 but they come to get purpose out of you. But just hold on. Because the Bible said in 1 Peter 5:6,
23:39 that he shall exalt you in due time, I am trying to stop, but let me say this. He shall thank you, Jesus.
23:52 Exalt you in due time. These two words due time, come from the Greek root word, Kairos, which is different than Kronos.
24:01 Kronos is a chronological time, time or time on the clock. But God, somebody knows doesn't move by time on the clock.
24:10 God is above time. God is timeless. So Chronicles is chronological time that we Mark by looking at a clock.
24:20 But Kairos means thank you, Jesus. That God will get us out in His timing. Anybody has been through a trial,
24:29 anybody been through tribulation and for a moment, it looked like you were not going to make it.
24:33 But now that you're on the other side of it in due time, you surrendered yourself to the mighty hand of God
24:40 and God got you out in due time. He may not come when you want him, but he's always right on time.
24:49 So I dare you to watch God work late in the midnight hour, God's going to turn it around. He is going to work it out in your favour.
24:58 I am trying to quit, but my souls get happy right now.
25:01 The story is told of a little girl who was outside of her house. Bouncing a rubber ball.
25:07 Her father came outside to where she was when the little girl's father approached her.
25:12 The little girl said to her father, 'Look, daddy, look at my ball. The harder you throw the ball down,
25:18 the higher the ball bounces back.' You all don't hear what I'm saying. She said, 'the harder you thought the ball down.
25:24 The higher, the ball bounces back.' Now think about it. When you throw down a plate, the plate breaks.
25:33 When you throw down a sandbag, the sandbag falls to the ground and the sandbags stand stays there.
25:40 But when you throw down a rubber ball, the harder you throw it down, the high air, it bounces back Sometimes in life.
25:52 When we're thrown down, we are thrown down like the plate. And we apart sometimes when we are thrown down,
26:00 we fall down like the sandbag and we stay down. But sometimes I'm so glad that when we're thrown down, we bounce back higher.
26:10 Like the rubber ball. What makes the rubber ball bounce back?
26:14 What's the difference in the rubber ball versus the plate or the sandbag?
26:18 The difference between the plate, the difference between the sandbag, the difference between the ball is in what they're made of.
26:25 I'm here to let somebody know that you and I have been made by God. We were made in his image. After his likeness,
26:33 born of his spirit, washed in his blood. He puts something in us that when the storms of life come,
26:40 when the troubles of life come with the trials of life, come, he put something in us that keeps us bouncing back.
26:48 So somebody needs to tell the devil I am down, but not out. I am sick. I am fighting cancer. I'm fighting the Coronavirus,
26:57 but I am not dead. I may have lost my job. I may be unemployed, but God's got something better for me because in due time,
27:06 in due time, in due time, God is going to turn that thing around. So I am going to watch God work. I said, watch God work.
27:17 Watch God work to the utmost. Jesus saves to the gutter most Jesus saves. He will pick you up, turn you around.
27:29 Halleluiah Jesus saves. I do not know who your Goliath is today. I do not know who your giant is today,
27:41 but I dare you today to watch God work. God is not going to let you stay down. God is not going to let you break apart
27:47 Thank you very much for tuning in to this week's Breath of Life broadcast.
