00:07 Sermon #B704 - Heart Burn 00:20 All right, we are ready to go. We are ready to go. 00:23 Luke chapter 24, Luke chapter 24, Luke chapter 24. And I want to go to verse number 13, Luke chapter 24, verse number 13. 00:35 And I believe we are ready now, this along with scripture. So bear with me. I am going to read it. 00:39 The word of God says; 'and behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, 00:46 which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And we know threescore. Three times 20 is 60 furlongs. 00:53 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass that while they commune together 01:01 and the reason Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were held that they should not know him. 01:09 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that he had one to another, as he walked and are sad. 01:18 And one of them whose name was Cleopas answering said unto him, 'are thou now only a stranger in Jerusalem 01:25 and has not known the things which are coming to pass there in these days?'. And he said unto him, 'What things?' 01:34 And they said unto him, ''concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God 01:41 and all the people and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and have crucified him. 01:49 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel and beside all this, 01:57 today is the third day since these things were done. Yay. And certain women also have our company, made us astonished, 02:07 which were early at the supplicant. They found out his body. 02:12 They came saying that they had also seen a vision of Angel which said that he was alive and certain of them, which were with us, 02:22 went to the supplicant and found it even so as the woman had said, but him, they saw not. 02:32 Then he said unto them, ''old fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken, 02:39 ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory and beginning at Moses and all the prophets, 02:47 he expounded unto them and all the scripts, the things concerning himself.'' And they drew nigh unto the village, wherever they went. 02:56 And he made as though he would have gone further, but they constrained him saying, ''abide with us for it is toward evening 03:08 and today is far spent.'' And he went in to tarry with them and came to pass. As he sat at meat with them, he took bread 03:18 and blessed it and broke and gave to them and their eyes were open and they knew him and he vanished out of their sites. 03:31 And they said to one another, ''did not our hearts burn within us while talk with us by the way 03:41 and while he opens to us the scriptures.'' And they Rose up the same hour and returned to Jerusalem 03:46 and found the 11 gathered and them that were with them saying, ''The Lord is risen indeed and have appeared to Simon'' Verse 35, 03:58 And they told what things were done in the way and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. 04:08 They just allow me a little time on the subject, heartburn. Father God bless us. 04:16 Now, as we open your word, make it real, make it applicable to our lives. I pray the power of the Holy Ghost, 04:22 not just in this sanctuary, but I pray that your Holy ghost visited everyone who is watching 04:28 and tuning into this broadcast right now. We pray for the power of your Holy Spirit to pour down on each. 04:35 And every one of us forgives me of my sins. I am not worried that it is staying up here, but Lord forgives me of my sins, 04:41 cleanse me from things that are not right and pleasing, not citing me. That people not see me thee and here the today. 04:47 And when the appeal time comes Lord, as you do it every week, move. We pray. I pray this prayer. I ask these things in Jesus name. 04:58 Amen.Heartburn, heartburn. Have you ever had that experience when you could not see something, 05:14 but it was right in front of you in the Byrd home. That is my home. 05:23 One of the greatest possessions in our home is the television remote control. 05:30 Everyone wants to have the remote in their hands from myself to Christyn, to Caileigh, to Carissa, not so much my wife, 05:43 Danielle, but to the rest of us, everyone wants the remote. And so sometimes we will hide the remote control from each other. 05:55 So if we have to step away, no one will change the channel. Do I have a witness in this place? 06:01 Somebody knows what I am talking about. Do not act like you do not know what I am talking about. Tell the truth. 06:06 Shame the devil. You hide the remotes. One day I wanted to watch an LA Lakers basketball game. I wanted to watch 06:17 and see LeBron James play, but I could not find the remote. I looked everywhere, the counter, the couch, the table, in my chair. 06:35 I am looking everywhere, but I could not see it. I could not see the remote. So I asked my wife, Danielle, where is the remote? 06:46 She says I do not know Christyn. Where is the remote? I do not know Caileigh. Where is the remote? I do not know. Even our baby girl, 06:55 Carissa, Carissa where is the remotes. I do not know. I am going crazy. I am looking everywhere. 07:03 I am turning the place upside down because I want to see that basketball game. The game has started. 07:10 I am going crazy. I am missing it because I do not see the remote again. I call out Danielle's upstairs. 07:16 Danielle where is the remote. She says to check the couch. I already checked the couch. Where is the remote? 07:25 So Danielle with a smile on her face comes down the stairs, goes to the couch, lifts a pillow, finds the remote. 07:41 Gives me that look and says, here you go. I said, but I looked there, but I did not see it. 07:54 Do not laugh at me. I know you are. I cannot see you, but I know you are, but do not laugh at me 07:58 because I know it has happened to you too, because it is frustrating when you cannot see something 08:07 and it is right in front of you now, remote control is important and a big deal for our family. 08:18 But in the overall scheme of things, remote control is really not that important. It is really not that big of a deal. 08:29 But what about those times when you are looking for something important, but you cannot see it. 08:38 Jesus was crucified on Friday on the Sabbath. He laid resting in the grave, which means he was obedient to his law, 08:50 even in death. But early Sunday morning on the third appointed day, he got up with all power in his hands, power over death, 09:04 power over hell, power over the grave. Jesus rose from the dead and now Jesus lives. And because he lives, 09:13 we live because he got up one day, the dead in Christ are going to get up. And one day we with our alive 09:21 and remain are going to be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord? 09:27 But on this day, the Bible says the women in our texts are sad and the disciples are afraid. The disciples are scared. 09:40 They had laid down their lives, laid down their jobs. They laid down their careers to follow Jesus. They had left their family, 09:51 left their friends to follow Jesus Christ. And when he was healing, the sick, when he was raising the dead, 09:57 when he was restoring sight to the blind, it was good. It was cool to be a disciple, but now he is dead. 10:04 And all of a sudden it is no longer popular to be one of his disciples. It is no longer safe being one of his disciples. 10:14 You see in my life, I have learned that sometimes being in the will of God causes you to be out of the favour of people. 10:21 I wish I had a witness in his place. 10:23 The women are on their way to the tomb. And the disciples are in the upper room because, in their hearts and minds, 10:33 Jesus is dead. And because they think he is dead, they are discouraged, despondent, disappointed, and they are defeated. 10:47 see the last time they saw him, he was dead and in a Tomb. 10:53 But when the women go to the tomb on this day, he is not there. He is not in the grave, 11:03 but his linen is still in the form of his body without disturbing it again. 11:12 God rolled away from the stone not to let Jesus out so much, but to let the believers in. 11:21 the angels sat down on that stone as if to say to the Roman soldiers, 11:27 what are you going to do about it? Because when God rolls your stone away, when God prepares, thank you Jesus, 11:35 a table in the presence, your enemies, All your enemies can do is sit down and watch you eat. I wish I had a witness to this place. 11:42 God has the angel roll. The stone away. The angel then asks the women, ''Why seek the living among the dead. 11:54 He is not here. He has risen. He is alive.'' I serve a risen saviour. I do not serve a dead Jesus, but I serve a risen saviour. 12:10 He is in the world today. I know that he is living. Whatever men may say, I serve a risen saviour. I do not serve a dead Jesus. 12:19 God's not dead. God's alive. That is why I do not understand how some Christians cannot smile, cannot sing, cannot praise God, 12:26 cannot worship God. Do not, you know, he is alive. And if he is alive, he wants you to be alive. You are not the frozen chosen. 12:33 You are not the first church of refrigeration. You are the saved, sanctified. Blood bought blood-washed child of the most high God. 12:41 And I am so glad that Jesus died for me. And I am so glad that he got up from me because if Jesus had just died, 12:49 we still be in our sins But because Jesus Rose everything. He said everything. He taught everything. 12:56 He promised means something you see Christ was given a death sentence, but the end result is the eternal life sentence for us. 13:05 Christ died in result for us however is grace. Christ rose from the dead and as the ultimate conqueror of death and hell and sin. 13:15 Oh, death! , where is I sting? Oh, grave! Rare is thy victory? 13:20 The strength of the sin of death is sin. The strength of sin is the law, 13:25 but thanks be to God who gave us the victory through our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. So victory is mine. 13:32 Victory is today is mine. I told Satan to get thee behind victory today is mine. Now when the women, 13:39 I got to get to my points so I can sit down. When the women go inside the tomb, the tomb is not disturbed. 13:46 The tomb is not messy. The tomb is not ransacked. It looks like Jesus took his time leaving. Hear me, everybody, 13:58 because the linen napkin that was over his face, the linen napkin that was over and covered his body. He folded it 14:07 and left it in the grave. You all do not hear what I am saying. Now, anybody who folds clothes knows. 14:14 You got to take your time folding clothes. You do not fold clothes quickly. Somebody hear what I am talking about. 14:21 Jesus got out of the linen cloth and left the linen cloth in the form of his body. And he did this to demonstrate that God did it. 14:33 He was wrapped in linen cloths, but God got him out. And the living did not unravel when God got him out. 14:42 Now quickly. The text says that there are two disciples on their way back to Emmaus it is late in the evening. On resurrection day. 14:51 The Bible says that Cleopas is one of the disciples by name, but we are not given the name of the other person. 14:59 Now, some people say it was Cleopas' wife, but the Bible does not tell us who it was. We just know that there are two disciples, 15:06 two followers on their way back to Emmaus. Emmaus Is seven miles from Jerusalem and they are walking, 15:15 but Jesus does not want them to leave until they get their story straight. So the Bible says that Jesus joins them on their walk. 15:25 Are you hearing what I am saying? Now Jesus appears to these discouraged disillusioned disciples. 15:32 He could have appeared in many other places. He could have dropped in on Pilates palace for a few minutes. 15:39 He could have shown up at Caiaphas home unannounced. He could have made a visit to the Sanhedrin. 15:46 He could have even shown up at the Roman guard's barracks, but instead, Jesus joins these two disciples. 15:53 These two disciples who had given up and headed home. These two disciples who were disillusioned and dejected. 16:00 These two disciples who were gloomy, mournful and sad. They are walking and talking about what happened on Friday. 16:08 They had waited around on the Sabbath But nothing had happened. And so they leave Sunday without getting the story straight Jesus, 16:20 he joins them, but they do not recognize him. They do not know who he is. Maybe they do not recognize him 16:30 because they weren't expecting him. 16:33 Because maybe the reason some of you will never get a breakthrough or a miracle is that you are not expecting it. 16:40 You watch other people say, amen, you watch other people say, thank you, Jesus, you watch other people say, praise the Lord, 16:49 you watch other people shout, but it never moves you because you are not expecting it. And you only get what you expect. 16:57 Are you hearing what I am saying? If you do not expect to be blessed, then that is not going to happen for you. 17:02 If you do not expect your prayers to be answered, that is not going to happen for you. 17:05 If you do not expect God to make a way away will not happen. But I am today looking for a miracle. 17:12 I am expecting the impossible. I am seeing the invisible. 17:17 I am touching the intangible because the sky is the limit to what I can have, but maybe they did not recognize him 17:24 because they did not expect him. But then number two, maybe they did not recognize him because they had little faith. 17:33 They had heard the reports of the women who went to the tomb. They had seen the empty tomb for themselves, 17:38 but yet they had not believed the supernatural working of God to raise Jesus from the dead was outside of their box. 17:45 And we need to be careful not make the same mistake and that is to discount what God has done simply 17:53 because we cannot explain it or we cannot understand it. Or it is not within our box. It is not in the church box. 18:05 While God often uses natural things to accomplish his will. God can also do things. We do not understand. 18:14 God can also do things we cannot explain. God says my ways are not your ways. My thoughts are not your thoughts. 18:22 These two disciples, these two followers knew that something had happened, 18:28 but it was beyond their level of faith to be able to see things as they truly were. Let me tell you something. 18:35 Just because they knew about Jesus did not mean they knew Jesus just 18:38 because they could not see Jesus could see Jesus did not mean they could really see who he was. Many people think today, 18:45 think they know who Jesus is. They have heard about him. They have read about him. They have used his name, 18:51 but they would not recognize him. If they saw him. If he were looking at them dead in the face, 18:56 if he were making a way for them right in front of their eyes, if he were performing a miracle for their benefit, 19:02 they would not know it because their eyes have not been open. I wish somebody knew what I was talking about. 19:06 They cannot see him for what he is doing, because knowing about him and knowing him are two different things. 19:14 But then maybe number three, they did not recognize him because he looked different after the resurrection. 19:21 There is something about him now that wasn't like him before. That is just like some of us. 19:28 When we give our lives to Jesus and we become a new man, a new woman, a new creature in Jesus. 19:32 Some people do not recognize us because of how we look after our change. 19:37 I wish I had a witness in this place, but then number four, I think Jesus prevented them from recognizing him 19:45 because he had a purpose in blinding their eyes. What am I talking about? Jesus isn't being cruel here. 19:51 But his gradual revelation of himself allows them to learn certain lessons about God's promises. 19:56 You see the disciples had been told earlier about these events, but yet they still did not believe. 20:04 The Bible says that when Jesus joins them, Jesus says, what are you discussing? What are you talking about? 20:14 Why are you so sad? Why are you so down? Now? Let me remind you, friends of mine, that God is omniscient, 20:24 which means God is all-knowing. So he does not ask this question for his benefit. 20:30 He never asks a question that he does not know the answer to. I wish I had a witness at his place. 20:34 They respond. You have not heard, you do not know. You do not know what happened to Jesus. 20:43 Jesus was a prophet indeed in word, but he was crucified. Our elders crucified him. Now notice, they now call Jesus a prophet. 20:58 They no longer say he was the Christ. They no longer say he was the Messiah. They lost their faith for them. Jesus is dead. 21:08 And he must've been a prophet, just like the prophets of old who had died. 21:13 They said he possibly, he could not possibly be the Messiah chosen by God because the Messiah was supposed to come 21:18 and liberate his people. But Jesus is dead. And here it is the third day. And here are some women who run around here talking about, 21:25 they saw him. But according to their culture, they said, you cannot put confidence in women. You cannot take their word for it. 21:36 They are not reliable. We cannot trust them. We cannot trust these women. We cannot or gain them. 21:49 We cannot let them be pastors. We cannot let them be elders. We cannot let them be the president 21:58 or the vice president of the United States. We cannot let them be the speaker of the house. 22:04 We cannot let them be in power. The Bible says that there is nothing new under the sun, the same cultural bias 22:14 and misogyny that existed then still exists now in some circles. But in the name of Jesus, you better read your Bible. 22:23 Joel, two 28 and 29 days, and it shall come to pass afterwards that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons 22:32 and your daughters shall prophesy. Your old men shall dream dreams. Young men shall see visions and also on the surface 22:39 and upon the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my spirits. Jesus scolds them for not having hope 22:49 and not realizing what has happened. They thought the Messiah was going to be a political liberator, 22:55 but Jesus shows them but that isn't what the Messiah was going to do. He did not come to be victorious like a military leader, 23:03 but he had come to achieve victory through his own suffering. 23:08 but Jesus was wounded for our transgressions. Bruised for our iniquities. 23:13 Chastisement from our peace was upon him but by his stripes, we are healed all the scriptures point to Jesus. 23:23 So when you cannot see Jesus, look at the scriptures, when you cannot see what Jesus is doing in your life, 23:30 I dare you to look at the scriptures. Jesus said it best. Search the scriptures. They testify of me 23:38 So in Jesus, God, through preaching about Jesus, the Bible says he was acting like he was about to leave him. 23:47 And then they said, hold up, wait a minute. Abide with us. Stay with us. As a matter of fact, 23:56 the Bible says they constrained him to stay with them that night When they sat down to eat when they bless the 24:04 bread when they broke the bread, the Bible says, Jesus stopped restraining their eyes. 24:16 And immediately they saw someone who looks familiar immediately they recognized him for who he is as he hands them the bread 24:32 and right at that amen moments, right at that hallelujah moment, right at that thank you Jesus moment, he is gone. He vanishes. 24:43 He leaves them, he is gone. And they say did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us, 24:53 by the way, while he opened to us, the scriptures I am done. But let me just say this. 24:57 You see, somebody knows that when you have a little talk with Jesus, it'll make your heartburn. 25:04 When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all he is done for me, it will make your heartburn. 25:11 I am not talking about heartburn. Like you know it, I am not talking about a burning sensation in your chest that occurs 25:17 with a bitter taste in your throat or your mouth. I am not talking about pain or caused by digestive acid. 25:24 Moving into the tube that carries swallowed food to your oesophagus. I am not talking about acid reflux 25:31 or gastroesophageal reflux disease, better known as Je. But I am talking about heartburn. I said I am talking about heartburn. 25:45 I am talking about a burning desire to know Jesus. I am talking about a burning desire to see Jesus, to hear Jesus, 25:53 to walk with Jesus, to talk with Jesus, to be like Jesus, to live eternally with Jesus. Has anybody ever had their heartburn 26:03 because of Jesus? Is there anybody who has ever had a talk with Jesus? Is there anybody who is ever heard Jesus call their name? 26:11 Is there anybody? Who is glad to know. Jesus.? Glad you recognized Jesus.? Glad, just see Jesus? Glad to know Jesus for yourself? 26:20 I do not know about you, but I am glad I know him. I am glad I tried with him. Have you tried him? He is All right. 26:28 I am glad he is my saviour. I am glad he is my doctor. I am glad he is my lawyer. I am glad he is my Redeemer. 26:36 I am glad he is my protector. I am glad he is my refuge. I am glad he is my fortress. I am glad he is my bill paying 26:44 I am so glad Troubles do not last always. I am so glad weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning time. 26:52 I am so glad that after the rain, the sun's going to sign again. I am so glad that he rose from the dead. 27:02 I am so glad that he is coming back again. 27:05 Anybody want to have their heartburn? Let me tell you, I am going to close this way. Get ready to close. 27:10 What was the reaction? What was their reaction to Jesus's vanishing? Do not miss this 27:18 because a lot of times we talk about our hearts burn within us and then we shout and go home. But do not forget the message. 27:23 The text goes to verse 35. What was their reaction to Jesus's vanishing? The Bible teaches that they hurried back to Jerusalem, 27:36 That they went to be reunited with the believers in Jerusalem, but they had good news that needed to be shared that he Rose. 27:54 He is alive. He is who he said he was he is Jesus. He is the Christ. He is the Messiah. And he is coming back. He is coming back. 28:13 He is coming back. And that makes me have heartburn because what he is done for me is so amazing. 28:15 Thank you very much for tuning in to this week's Breath of Life broadcast. 28:19 We hope and pray that you've been blessed by Dr. Byrd's inspirational message. 28:24 If you would like to hear this sermon in its entirety, 28:26 please feel free to visit us at www.breathoflife.tv. 28:32 Or, call us at (256) 929-6460. 28:38 [END] |
