00:01 The experiments you will see
00:02 have been carefully done by professionals,
00:04 and should not be tried at home
00:05 without parental guidance.
00:07 Please follow the caution signs throughout this program.
00:33 Welcome, kids.
00:34 We are so glad you could join us today.
00:36 We are going to learn some wonderful things
00:38 about our Creator,
00:40 and I think it's through magnets,
00:41 but let me introduce you to Professor Roy.
00:44 And at the end over here, I have William,
00:47 Aiden,
00:48 Miss Aubrey and Noellia.
00:51 And what are we going to learn about magnets?
00:53 I like playing with magnets. How about you?
00:55 Yeah, magnets are fun, aren't they?
00:56 Yes, they are.
00:58 So what is a magnet anyway?
00:59 So what makes a magnet?
01:01 Well, we've got some very, very strong magnets here today.
01:03 In fact, I've got some little magnets right here,
01:06 these little magnets right here,
01:07 the little tiny ones right there.
01:09 These happened to be
01:10 some of the strongest magnets in the world.
01:12 So how do they make a magnet?
01:13 What makes up a magnet?
01:15 Well, I'm gonna tell you what makes up a magnet.
01:18 What we're going to do is
01:19 we're going to illustrate it, okay?
01:21 So if you kids will come out here
01:22 and what we've got,
01:24 we've got this big old rope right here,
01:26 and we're going to have you hang on to the rope,
01:28 hang on to those loops of the rope.
01:30 Okay. There we go.
01:31 We've got the loops of the rope.
01:33 Now, each one of our students right here,
01:34 each one of our guys,
01:36 they're gonna represent atoms, okay?
01:38 Atoms 'cause the world is made out of atom,
01:40 everything is made out of a combination of atoms,
01:42 aren't they?
01:43 So magnets have atoms in them, don't they?
01:46 Okay.
01:47 And the atoms all have electrical sphere.
01:50 So what we're going to do is
01:52 we're going to have you pull back on the rope,
01:55 pull back on the rope.
01:56 Each one of those atoms
01:58 is pulling in a different direction
01:59 and the rope isn't going anywhere.
02:01 It's just staying right there.
02:03 Well, a magnet has all the domains
02:05 of the atoms are all lined up
02:07 and that's what makes it a very, very strong magnet.
02:10 So everybody turn and turn in this direction right here
02:13 and go ahead and walk in that direction.
02:17 Now we just turn them into a magnet
02:19 because now we made some work.
02:21 They had some work
02:22 and they all are going in that direction.
02:23 You can go ahead
02:25 and just drop the rope right there
02:26 and come back around here.
02:28 So then magnets are made out of elements.
02:30 And these elements in these neodymium magnets
02:33 happened to be boron and iron and neodymium,
02:37 which is really cool and boron and iron,
02:38 and they mix them all up.
02:40 They crush them
02:41 and they press them into a mold.
02:43 Any shape you want,
02:44 you can just about make a magnet,
02:45 but it's not a magnet
02:47 until they line up all the domains of the atoms,
02:48 just like they did when they walked the rope
02:50 across the way right here,
02:52 all the domains have to be lined up.
02:55 Hey, what's the largest magnet you've ever seen?
02:59 You ever seen big magnets?
03:01 Yeah. Okay.
03:03 Well, you might have some magnets
03:04 on your refrigerator.
03:05 Have you had some magnets on your refrigerator
03:07 and they stick to stuff, don't they?
03:09 Yes, they stick to some types of metal.
03:11 Well, the largest magnet I've ever seen is the earth.
03:14 And we're standing on the earth right now.
03:16 And the earth has a magnetic sphere,
03:18 which is interesting.
03:20 God created it that way.
03:21 And because we have a liquid core
03:24 and the earth is spinning.
03:27 And that creates
03:28 a very, very strong magnetic field.
03:30 That magnetic field is good
03:32 because it keeps us from getting bombarded
03:34 with some very, very strong,
03:36 very, very deadly rays
03:38 that the sun give us like gamma rays and x-rays
03:41 and we need that protection, don't we?
03:44 And our atmosphere helps us as well.
03:46 Let's see what we got.
03:48 Let's go ahead and move this down here
03:49 out of our way.
03:50 So we've got some,
03:52 I've got some very, very strong magnets right here.
03:54 And let me go ahead and show you what we've got.
03:56 What I'd like to do is come in between you right here,
03:59 you two gals right here.
04:00 Would you hang on to the ends of these magnets right here?
04:03 We have two pipes
04:04 and the two pipes, they have red ends.
04:06 That's the North Pole
04:07 because magnets have poles, don't they?
04:09 North and South.
04:11 Here we have the North Pole and we have the South Pole,
04:14 and the magnets are sticking together.
04:16 We say that they do what?
04:18 They contract.
04:19 I mean, they're drawn together.
04:22 Okay. Can you pull them apart?
04:24 It's very, very strong.
04:25 Can you pull them apart?
04:28 Pull apart and maybe I can help.
04:33 Okay. Here, let me help.
04:34 There, there we go.
04:35 Whoa. Okay.
04:37 So what happens if we, so those are opposite, right?
04:39 Negative.
04:40 Not negative, but we have North and South.
04:42 Let's use both of the North Poles.
04:44 Let's see if they can make those touch?
04:46 Can you make those touch?
04:48 Can you make them touch and they're pushing away.
04:50 They're repelling.
04:52 Okay. So like poles repel.
04:54 Okay. Let's try this. Let's try the two South Poles.
04:56 Turn yours around like this.
04:58 Now we have two South Poles
04:59 and they're repelling each other.
05:00 They're pushing away.
05:02 Very, very strong, isn't it?
05:03 Very strong.
05:05 Don't be nervous.
05:06 Well, that's the side, just the ends.
05:08 Okay.
05:09 Why don't you turn yours around
05:10 and let's have North and South and they're going to...
05:12 They're gonna attract, so opposites do attract.
05:15 Hey, let's try the guys over here.
05:17 All right. Let's try the guys.
05:18 There you go.
05:20 Let's see if they can pull them apart.
05:21 We have North and South.
05:22 Can you guys pull those apart?
05:24 Can you pull them apart?
05:25 Don't fall.
05:26 You may have to help them.
05:28 Go ahead, take those apart.
05:29 Pull, pull, pull, pull, pull. Let me help them.
05:30 Okay, there we go. Let's try the two North Poles.
05:32 Let's see if they're, the two reds.
05:35 There you go, the two reds.
05:36 Can you get those together?
05:38 Is that strong?
05:40 They're repelling. They're pushing away.
05:42 They're pushing away.
05:43 Not the sides, just the very ends.
05:45 Just the very ends.
05:46 It's very strong. Okay.
05:48 Turn them both around.
05:49 Let's try the two South Pole ends.
05:51 The two South Pole ends
05:52 and can, will they attract or will they push away, repel?
05:59 Can you feel that?
06:00 It's very, very strong. Okay.
06:02 Why don't you turn yours around and you keep yours like it is.
06:04 Now, we have North and South.
06:05 Whoa, and they attract, don't they?
06:07 Hey, thank you. And you can let go.
06:08 Hey, let's see.
06:10 Hey, let's see if we can get a big, strong adult doing that.
06:14 All by myself. Yeah, by yourself.
06:16 Oh, not too bad.
06:18 Okay. You got no, no.
06:19 You got to turn them around.
06:20 We want to see... Oh, turn them around.
06:22 We wanna see them repel each other.
06:23 So, I have to see, do the South?
06:25 This is South. There you go, don't be nervous.
06:28 Whoa!
06:30 I can't do it.
06:31 I've done them with smoke. Okay. Turn them around.
06:33 Let's try the two North Pole ends.
06:35 And now that is pretty cool.
06:37 That is pretty cool.
06:38 That's a very, very strong magnet.
06:40 We're gonna set those down over here.
06:42 All right.
06:43 I should put my safety glasses on.
06:45 Now let's see what it got.
06:46 Now I've got a couple of spheres right here.
06:48 Now these are interesting. These are tennis balls.
06:50 Why don't you put your hands straight out.
06:51 Okay.
06:52 Let's see what we got right here.
06:54 You know, it's good to wash our hands, isn't it?
06:55 Yeah. We should wash our hands, right?
06:57 Because we, you know,
06:58 we're touching things all the time,
07:00 but let's put one of them underneath his hand
07:02 and we're gonna put another one on top of it,
07:03 hold it, hold it up.
07:05 Let's see what happens right here.
07:06 Oh, that's so cool.
07:07 Whoa! I think. Does he have sticky hands?
07:09 No, I think it's...
07:10 What do you think is inside the tennis balls?
07:13 Magnets.
07:15 They're magnets.
07:16 They're the same type of magnets
07:17 that we mentioned before,
07:19 neodymium magnet.
07:20 They're very, very strong.
07:21 You really don't have sticky hands.
07:23 It's just that magnetic force.
07:25 Can you feel the pressure of those two tennis balls?
07:28 Yeah. Yes.
07:29 So that magnetic sphere
07:30 is going all the way through his skin,
07:32 his bones, his muscles, his tendons.
07:35 And it's a force.
07:36 It's a very, very strong force, but we can't see it.
07:39 Isn't that interesting?
07:41 That is very interesting going through the body.
07:43 I know, it's really interesting.
07:44 So what I'm gonna do?
07:46 I'm gonna take this off like this
07:47 and they do stick together, don't they?
07:49 Why don't you try it on his hand?
07:50 Why don't you do it on his hand?
07:52 You put your hands straight out.
07:53 No, can you do it with him?
07:55 Hold it for him. Put it on his hand.
07:56 Here we go. There we go.
07:58 Put one of them underneath.
07:59 Wow! Look at that.
08:01 And it sticks to it.
08:02 I like that.
08:04 You know, we can use magnets to accelerate things.
08:07 So wait, what we have right here is
08:09 we've got a magnetic linear accelerator.
08:13 That's a big word, isn't it? It is.
08:15 But it's really kind of fun.
08:16 Let's say, can I get you to do something for me here?
08:18 Why don't you step down here like this
08:21 and put your hand up like this because you know what?
08:23 One of these little balls,
08:24 it should come out over here
08:26 and it should hit your hand, okay?
08:27 Can you catch it?
08:29 Right. Okay. Are you ready?
08:30 Get ready to catch it, it won't hurt.
08:32 It won't hurt.
08:33 That's easy for you to say.
08:35 So let's see what we got.
08:37 So I'm gonna take one of these little spheres.
08:38 These are just steel.
08:40 I'm gonna put it up here
08:41 and it's gonna hit this one right here.
08:43 What do you think is gonna happen to all of those?
08:45 What do you think is gonna happen you guys?
08:47 They're all gonna roll out.
08:48 Are they all gonna roll out? What do you guys think?
08:51 Let's try. Here we go.
08:52 Three, two, one, I'm gonna let it go.
08:53 Three, two, one.
08:55 I'm gonna let go.
08:56 And whoo!
08:58 So one went in and one came out.
09:01 Wow. Isn't that interesting?
09:02 Conservation of energy. How about that?
09:05 Hey, but let's have some more fun.
09:07 Okay. Are you ready?
09:08 That hurts your hand?
09:10 No, okay, good.
09:12 All right.
09:13 Let's try two, we're gonna try two.
09:14 All right. Get ready to catch it.
09:16 What do you think is gonna happen?
09:17 Are all those gonna go or one or two or none of them?
09:19 I think two of them are gonna go.
09:20 You think two of them?
09:21 You think one? Yeah.
09:23 What about you? Two.
09:24 Two. One.
09:25 One. Okay.
09:27 Let's try three, two, one countdown.
09:28 Three, two, one.
09:30 Let's let them go.
09:31 Well, two in and what?
09:32 Two out, two in and two out.
09:34 Now that's interesting, isn't it?
09:35 Okay. Conservation of energy.
09:38 All right. Okay. Let's do it another time.
09:40 Well, hang on.
09:42 Let's get these all organized, right?
09:43 Okay. I know I've got three.
09:45 Oh, hang on.
09:46 Whoa! Here we go.
09:47 What do you think is gonna happen now?
09:49 Three in, what's gonna happen on the other side?
09:52 Three out. Three out.
09:53 Hey, it sounds like a pattern.
09:55 You think it's a pattern? Yeah.
09:56 Okay, here we go.
09:58 Countdown three, two, one.
10:00 Let's go three in and...
10:02 Whoo! Three out.
10:03 Absolute.
10:04 Hey, but let's turn it into a magnetic accelerator
10:08 and a magnetic linear accelerator.
10:11 Are you ready for this? Yes.
10:12 Okay. Okay.
10:14 Well what I have right here,
10:15 let me get this one out right here.
10:17 I have another one right there.
10:19 Now this one is very, very special.
10:22 It doesn't look special, but it is special
10:25 because this is a very, very strong
10:26 neodymium magnet.
10:29 I'm gonna put it right here, like this.
10:30 Oh, hang on.
10:32 I'm gonna put it right here.
10:33 Let's put it right there.
10:35 All right. And then I'm gonna drop one.
10:37 Okay. Here we go. Are you ready?
10:39 Yes. Okay.
10:40 And it might speed up a little bit.
10:41 We need to guess how many it's going to come out
10:43 with a magnet?
10:44 Sure. Let's do that. How many?
10:46 What do you think with a magnet?
10:47 How many you think?
10:49 One, two, three, four, none?
10:52 Okay. Put two hands up. Put two hands.
10:54 Okay, here we go. I say one.
10:55 Countdown. Let's go.
10:56 Three, two, one, I started here, what happened?
10:59 Here we go.
11:00 Whoo!
11:08 See how fast it went. Yeah.
11:10 Wow! It's an accelerator.
11:11 Well, that magnetic sphere, isn't that interesting?
11:14 An accelerator.
11:15 That is very interesting.
11:17 Okay. So here we have our magnet.
11:20 Okay.
11:21 Our very, very strong magnet is right there,
11:23 isn't that interesting?
11:25 When this ball was coming down,
11:26 it was pulling this ball towards it.
11:29 And as soon as it hit it, whoa, it speeded everything up.
11:32 Let's try it one more time. Are you ready?
11:34 Count down. Three, two. one.
11:37 Look how fast that thing went.
11:39 It went a lot faster, didn't it?
11:41 It did. It really did.
11:43 Now, that's interesting to me.
11:44 Magnets are very powerful, aren't they?
11:46 I love playing...
11:48 But we couldn't even see.
11:49 We couldn't see the magnetic field.
11:51 We can't see them. It's invisible.
11:53 Can you think of anything else that's invisible?
11:57 Can you think of anything else that's invisible?
11:58 Wind.
12:00 I'm sorry. Wind.
12:01 The wind. Yeah, the wind.
12:02 Oh, it's interesting.
12:04 We don't know where it comes from
12:05 or where it goes.
12:07 Okay. That's interesting.
12:08 Wow. What else is invisible?
12:10 You know, that most things are invisible.
12:12 Did you know that?
12:13 Most things are made
12:14 out of things that are invisible.
12:16 You know, the Bible says that God created,
12:17 Jesus created everything
12:19 that we can see, touch, feel and hear.
12:20 He even created things that are invisible
12:23 and you and I and the table and our food and everything
12:27 is made out of things that are invisible.
12:30 It's mostly things are invisible,
12:32 isn't that amazing?
12:33 It's hard to believe.
12:35 It really is. Wow!
12:36 That is exciting
12:37 and I like how the magnetic field,
12:39 because that even puts a protection,
12:41 a hedge around the earth
12:43 and these North and the South Poles.
12:45 That is amazing how God created it,
12:48 and even to go around in the solar system.
12:50 That is just amazing.
12:52 And it reminds me of a Bible text.
12:54 Do you want to pull out a Bible text, Aiden, for us?
12:58 I believe it's found in 1 John 2:6.
13:05 "He who says he abides in Him
13:08 ought himself also to walk just as He walked."
13:12 Who do we wanna walk like?
13:14 Jesus.
13:16 We do wanna walk like Jesus.
13:17 We wanna follow His example.
13:19 Just like these magnets.
13:21 How they connect to each other.
13:23 We wanna be connected to who?
13:25 Who do we want be to be connected to?
13:27 You're right, Jesus and God.
13:29 You're right, we want to be connected totally to Him.
13:31 I'm so glad that God made all these wonderful things
13:35 like these magnets,
13:36 because we can play with them.
13:38 And I see,
13:39 are you already playing with them, William?
13:40 Yeah.
13:42 We enjoy playing with them
13:43 and let's go ahead
13:44 and continue playing because what?
13:46 What do we like to do?
13:48 Oh, this one,
13:49 sometimes we can play connection.
13:50 You have a strong one.
13:52 We've got, maybe let's see.
13:54 I like playing with them.
13:55 I wanted to see if this could roll.
13:57 Whoa!
13:59 I'm trying to see if mine will roll. Nope.
14:01 Sometimes they work, but I like stringing magnets.
14:04 How about you?
14:06 We can see God's creation all around us
14:08 'cause creation is what?
14:09 Science!
