00:03 are not intended to substitute 00:05 for the advice of your healthcare provider, 00:07 and the producers of this series 00:09 assume no liability for the use or misuse 00:12 of the material presented. 00:21 Creation, or evolution, design or random chance, 00:27 they say it all began with a big bang. 00:31 But when we look at the amazing human body, 00:34 the answer is obvious. 00:36 The complexity of the design exceeds 00:38 any thing man has ever made. 00:41 The body, it only have been designed 00:43 by the master designer we read about in the Bible. 00:47 Join us as we explore the miraculous development 00:51 of the human baby. 01:08 Devine Design. 01:22 What a blessing it is to see 01:24 and to hold a precious little baby, 01:27 just to think that God has blessed us 01:29 and entrusted us with a new life. 01:32 A mission if you will to raise that child to recognize 01:36 God's purpose for him or her in this world. 01:40 To give that child every advantage in health, 01:43 education, moral training and spiritual growth 01:46 should be the aim of every parent. 01:49 But how much thought do we give 01:51 to how that baby forms in the womb. 01:54 More importantly, 01:55 how much consideration 01:56 do we give to the development of the baby, 01:59 the nutritional needs, 02:00 the environment and all the prenatal influences 02:04 that will affect the baby even before it is born? 02:08 Have you pondered the idea that character development, 02:11 it actually begins in the womb. 02:14 We're excited about a new series 02:16 dealing with these very questions. 02:18 We'll examine how we are truly a product of divine design. 02:23 The miraculous creation of a new human life 02:26 will be explored from conception to birth. 02:30 We'll see such things as the amazing journey 02:32 of the egg. 02:34 The incredible functions of the placenta. 02:36 How the baby grows in the uterus? 02:38 And how mothers and even fathers 02:40 can affect the health and wellbeing 02:41 of the baby before birth? 02:44 We'll discuss labor and delivery, 02:47 how to minimize C-sections and comfort measures 02:50 that can greatly help the mother 02:52 through the prenatal period, 02:54 during labor and delivery and afterward. 02:57 We'll also share our tips for caring 02:59 for your precious little new born. 03:03 We know you'll be blessed 03:05 whether you're an expectant couple, 03:07 a medical missionary 03:08 or just curious about child birth. 03:11 Even grandparents might enjoy this. 03:13 So please join us as we begin 03:15 this first episode of Divine Design. 03:21 Hello, I'm Patti Barnes, 03:23 an instructor and director of the Midwifery Program 03:26 at Hartland College. 03:28 I would like to share with you just a few of the many 03:31 astounding wonders of child birth. 03:33 In Jeremiah 1:4-5, we read these amazing words. 03:39 "Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 03:42 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, 03:44 and before thou camest forth out of the womb 03:46 I sanctified thee, 03:48 and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." 03:52 He knows each and everyone of us 03:54 and he knew us before we are born. 03:57 In Psalm 139-13 we read. 04:00 "For thou hast possessed my reins, 04:02 thou hast covered me in my mother's womb." 04:05 So you see, God is not just a bystander. 04:08 He's actively involved in the formation 04:11 of every individual. 04:13 The next verse says. 04:15 "I will praise thee, 04:16 for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: 04:18 marvelous are thy works, 04:20 and that my soul knoweth right well." 04:23 The word "fearfully" comes from a Hebrew word, 04:26 meaning reverently. 04:27 And "wonderfully" is derived from a Hebrew word, 04:30 meaning differently or distinctly. 04:33 So each of us is reverently and distinctly made. 04:39 Each of us are unique individuals. 04:41 You and I have been specifically designed by God. 04:45 We can see this in the fact that 04:47 no two fingerprints are alike. 04:50 No two brains are deigned like either. 04:53 The initial creases and grooves in the brain 04:55 formed a unique brain print if you will. 04:59 Through the modern science and technology, 05:01 we have been able to explore into development of the baby 05:04 in the womb to at least graft some of the wonders 05:07 that God performs to bring a new life into the world. 05:10 Today we want to just take a peek 05:13 into this amazing process of the creation of life 05:16 in the womb. 05:18 Now let's look at some of the astounding facts 05:20 of an incredible journey of a single egg cell 05:24 from the ovary to the uterus. 05:26 Just this little glimpse will be enough 05:28 to cause you to say with the psalmist, 05:30 I am fearfully and wonderfully made. 05:34 Did you know that when a baby girl is born, 05:37 she is born with all the eggs that she will ever need? 05:41 Approximately 400,000 egg cells are in her two ovaries. 05:48 At the time of ovulation, 05:49 one egg cell is released from one of the ovaries. 05:53 The next ovulation will release an egg cell 05:56 from the other ovary, 05:58 and they alternate back and forth. 06:01 Amazingly, if one ovary should become damage 06:04 and unable to release an egg, 06:06 the other will sense the failure 06:08 and release an egg instead. 06:11 So there will always be an egg cell release. 06:14 The oviducts, 06:15 also called the fallopian tubes have finger like 06:19 appendages at the end that captures the egg cell 06:23 and draws it into the tube. 06:26 Without this capture, 06:27 the egg cell could wander off 06:29 and perhaps eventually implant in the wrong place. 06:33 This would mean no baby 06:34 and possibly serious consequences 06:37 to the mother. 06:40 Once inside the fallopian tube, 06:42 the egg cell becomes surrounded by thousands of little cells 06:46 that act as escorts and nurse maids for the egg. 06:50 They will supply the egg with all it needs 06:53 in addition to supplying the egg, 06:56 they'll also have a sticky surface 06:58 that allows the egg to be propelled by the cilia, 07:03 which are trillions of little hair 07:04 like structures 07:06 that moves the egg in the rhythmic waving motion 07:09 to the tube toward the uterus. 07:13 If the cell is fertilized, 07:15 it will be within the first 24 hours of the journey. 07:20 It is then called a zygote. 07:23 The gender of the baby is determined 07:25 at this point of conception. 07:27 There are many miracles that take place in that process 07:31 but we won't have time to touch them now. 07:35 About 30 hours, 07:37 the first cell division takes place. 07:39 The egg is about the size of a dot on an eye or period 07:45 at the end of the sentence. 07:47 It remained basically the same size when it divides 07:50 but now there are two cells rather than one. 07:54 These two cells divide to make four, 07:57 this process of cell division is called mitosis 08:01 and about four and a half days it will become a blastocyst, 08:05 having a hollow section on one side 08:08 and a cluster of cells on the other 08:10 that we call the embryo that will form the baby. 08:15 At the surface around the hollow section possibility 08:18 to implant itself into the uterus 08:22 which in itself is a miracle. 08:25 This implantation in the uterus takes place 08:28 around the sixth day, 08:30 then the baby is sort of put on hold, 08:33 resting from the journey of six days. 08:36 While the production of the baby 08:38 is in this resting state, the placenta is formed. 08:42 That amazing organ that will be the baby's life support 08:46 until he or she is born. 08:50 It is not difficult to see the parallels between 08:53 reproduction and the creation week. 08:56 There were divisions. 08:57 The Lord divided the waters above from the waters beneath. 09:02 He also divided dry land from the waters. 09:05 He built a support system necessary 09:08 to sustain life first, 09:10 then created the animals and man. 09:13 The Lord created for six days and then rest the seventh. 09:17 What a privilege it is for us women 09:20 to be able to carry in our womb an illustration 09:24 of God's creation. 09:26 Now we want to take just a quick glimpse 09:29 at a support system that God has put in the womb 09:32 for the developing baby. 09:33 Remember that on the sixth day the blastocyst implants itself 09:37 into the uterine wall, 09:39 another amazing thing begins to happen. 09:42 At this point, 09:43 the outer cell begins 09:44 constructing a primitive placenta. 09:47 The placenta is the most remarkable organ 09:50 of the human body performing many tasks. 09:54 Now let's look at some of these things. 09:58 Did you know that the placenta brings 09:59 oxygen to the baby and carries away 10:02 carbon dioxide and waste? 10:04 It is also stores carbohydrates, protein, 10:09 calcium and all the nutrition and then it releases them 10:13 as the baby needs them. 10:15 This is why it is so very important 10:17 to eat healthy 10:18 so that the proper nutrition is available to the baby. 10:22 Also the placenta provides the hormones 10:24 that helps maintain the pregnancy. 10:27 The placenta has to serve as the baby's lungs, 10:30 digestive system, liver, kidneys and immune system. 10:35 What an amazing organ? 10:37 It offers protection for the baby 10:39 from many harmful bacteria and substances. 10:42 But there are some things that can cross the placenta 10:45 and adversely affect the baby. 10:47 These include alcohol, nicotine, 10:50 drugs and some viruses. 10:52 This is why it is vitally important 10:55 for mothers to abstain 10:56 from these health destroying substances, 10:58 especially when pregnant. 11:00 We will speak more on this subject a little later. 11:04 The essential nutrients, hormones, 11:06 gases and antibodies from the mother 11:09 are exchanged in the placenta. 11:11 The mother's blood is pumped to and from the placenta, 11:14 while the baby's blood is pumped through the cord 11:17 to and from the placenta. 11:19 Amazingly, their blood never mixes. 11:22 The cord is a lifeline from the mother to the baby. 11:26 This should remind us that spiritually 11:28 Christ is our lifeline linking humanity to divinity, 11:34 our heart to his heart and providing everything 11:37 we need to live the Christian life. 11:40 At birth, the Lord provides miraculously 11:43 for the baby's own organs now fully formed to take over. 11:47 The lungs, the kidneys, 11:49 the liver and all the other organs 11:51 take up the work that the placenta has been doing 11:54 for the past eights months or more. 11:57 As you can see none of this could possibly happen 12:00 by chance. 12:02 We are truly, fearfully and wonderfully made. 12:06 After the baby is born, 12:07 another miracle must take place to save the mother's life. 12:11 Contractions eventually cause the expulsion of the placenta. 12:16 When this happens as many as 20 severed arteries 12:19 are left behind with a potential pouring out 12:23 about a pint of blood every minute. 12:26 Since the average woman only has 5 to 6 quarts 12:30 of blood in her body, 12:31 you can see the emergency situation created here. 12:34 Within 10 minutes all of her blood 12:37 could be drained. 12:38 There is no need to panic however, 12:41 in God's infinite wisdom, 12:43 He provided each of the severed arteries 12:46 with a precisely placed muscular sphincter 12:50 that closes off the vessel like a hemostat. 12:53 Pinching it close to prevent loss of blood. 12:56 This amazing process takes place 12:58 so quickly that on the average only about 13:02 one pint of blood is lost. 13:04 How thankful we should be for this disposal organ, 13:08 the placenta. 13:09 It has performed its task well and is ready to fade away. 13:13 This is not just some old tissue 13:15 we call the after birth 13:17 but the support system that provided 13:20 for the baby all these month in the womb 13:23 until the umbilical cord was cut. 13:27 In the devotional book, 13:28 Our High Calling page 45 we read... 13:32 "Measure the cord if you can, 13:34 that has been let down from heaven to lift man up. 13:37 The only estimate we can give you 13:39 of the length of that chain is to point you to Calvary." 13:43 Join me next time for more about our Divine Design. |
