01:20 By the way, please don't be offended by the word fetus. 01:25 It is a Latin word that simply means Young One. 01:29 It is not a thing but a young human being, 01:33 a developing baby. 01:34 Let's return once again to Psalm 139:13. 01:39 "For thou hast possessed my reins: 01:43 thou hast covered me in my mothers womb." 01:46 The word 'covered' comes from a Hebrew word sakak 01:51 which means to entwine or to weave or net. 01:56 Did you know that our skin it's miraculously woven. 01:59 The strength and the flexibility of our skin 02:02 is on account of the way it is woven together. 02:06 In verse 15 we find this truth repeated. 02:10 "My substance was not hid from thee 02:13 when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought 02:17 in the lowest parts of the earth." 02:19 The expression, 'curiously wrought' 02:23 comes from the Hebrew word raqam, 02:26 which means embroidered or weaved. 02:30 With that in mind, let us look how masterly 02:34 our body are woven together, 02:37 not just our skin but every organ 02:39 and tissue of our bodies. 02:42 Perhaps you've wondered as I have, 02:45 how from a simple cell 02:48 we can get a fully functional baby 02:50 with all its parts and system. 02:53 We might be able to grasp the cell division, 02:57 but how do we explain how each cell knows what to do 03:02 and even more incredible, 03:03 how do they all know how to interact 03:07 in order to form anything. 03:10 How is it that the genes are able to turn on 03:14 and turn off? 03:16 How is it that all the components 03:19 work in harmony like the bones, the organs, 03:23 the tissues etcetera 03:25 to form a living thing, a person. 03:29 It's no wonder that more and more biologists 03:32 are believing in a creator. 03:36 We saw earlier 03:37 that the outer cells of the blastocyst 03:40 after it has implanted into the uterine wall 03:43 has the remarkable job of constructing the placenta, 03:47 the baby's life support. 03:50 Once that is accomplished, 03:51 the inner cell mass begins the development of the embryo. 03:55 We find that one of the first things 03:58 that occur is the formation of the three germ layers. 04:03 They are called the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. 04:09 All the babies' major organs and structures 04:13 will develop from these three layers 04:16 by a process called organogenesis. 04:20 Now don't let these big words confuse or worry you. 04:24 They are simply names describing the foundation 04:28 of the various body tissues. 04:31 First let's look at the ectoderm. 04:33 This is the outer most layer, 04:36 and it's responsible 04:38 for the development of all the central nervous tissue 04:42 such as the brain, and the spinal cord, 04:45 and the peripheral sensory tissue. 04:48 It also will develop the more exterior parts 04:52 such as the epidermis, the hair, 04:55 the sweat glands, the nails, 04:57 the tooth enamel and cornea 05:00 and lens of the eye etcetera. 05:03 Next is a mesoderm, the middle layer 05:06 which is responsible 05:08 for the development of the skeleton, 05:09 connective tissue, the cardiovascular, 05:12 the lymphatic system, 05:14 the kidneys and blood, and so forth. 05:17 Modern science is helping us to answer some of our questions 05:22 but we can't fully comprehend how this happens. 05:27 Solomon, the wisest man on earth said, 05:31 "As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, 05:35 nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her 05:38 that is with child: 05:40 even so thou knowest not the works of God 05:43 who maketh all." 05:46 Finally we come to the endoderm. 05:49 This is a innermost layer 05:51 and will form the digestive tract, 05:53 the respiratory tract, the thyroid 05:56 and generates the formation of the major portion 05:59 of the internal organs like the liver, lungs and pancreas. 06:03 During the last half of this embryonic stage 06:06 between four and seven weeks, 06:08 the heart will begin beating. 06:11 The placenta is maturing. 06:13 The major organs are developing 06:16 and the brain is growing rapidly. 06:19 By the seventh week all the parts are emplaced 06:23 that will develop into human body. 06:26 Beginning with the eighth week 06:29 rapid development and growth takes place. 06:32 At this point the mother should be 06:34 extremely careful about teratogens. 06:38 What are teratogens? 06:40 These are substances or factors 06:42 that can cause congenital malformations 06:46 in the developing fetus. 06:49 In others words, 06:50 they adversely affect the growth 06:52 and development of the baby. 06:55 Some of the more common teratogens 06:58 are drugs and medications, 07:01 alcohol, nicotine and caffeine, 07:05 pesticides and other chemicals, 07:09 radiation, 07:10 certain viruses 07:12 and poor nutrition. 07:15 Most people know that drugs 07:17 may be harmful to the developing baby 07:20 but not everyone is familiar with the dangers of alcohol. 07:25 Some birth defects associated with alcohol use 07:28 may be stunted growth, 07:31 brain, kidney and heart damage, 07:34 small head, misformed faces, 07:38 low IQ, 07:41 and alcohol addiction 07:44 because the baby has withdrawal symptoms. 07:47 The term for this is called fetal alcohol syndrome. 07:52 If you are pregnant and drink alcohol, 07:56 it will pass to the baby. 07:58 There is no safe amount to drink 08:00 so please think about the welfare of your baby 08:04 and abstain entirely from this teratogen. 08:09 Now, let us consider smoking. 08:11 Did you know that cigarette smoke contains 08:13 thousands of harmful chemicals that may cross the placenta? 08:17 Here are just a few, 08:19 Nicotine: This harmful substance 08:22 can constrict the blood vessels 08:24 depriving the baby of precious oxygen and nutrients. 08:29 Carbon Monoxide: 08:31 This poisonous gas depletes the mother's blood of oxygen. 08:36 Cyanide: A poison, 08:39 as the body tries to expel it, 08:41 there is a depletion in protein and vitamin B12. 08:46 Tar: 08:48 This sticky brown substance damages the baby's lungs. 08:52 And lead: This could damage the baby's brain. 08:56 And if that isn't enough to concern you, 08:59 smoking is a single greatest factor 09:01 in low birth weight 09:03 and a contributor to miscarriages 09:06 and premature births. 09:08 There is also an increase risk of SIDS 09:11 which is sudden infant death syndrome. 09:15 Finally let's talk a moment about caffeine. 09:19 Caffeine easily crosses a placenta 09:23 and the baby lacks the enzymes 09:25 to break it down into a harmless form. 09:28 So what's a result? 09:30 It may cause miscarriage, 09:32 and interfere with fetal grow, 09:34 birth defects, and still birth. 09:39 Because of these dangers, 09:40 the FDA issued a warning for pregnant women 09:44 to avoid or consume sparingly all foods 09:48 and beverages containing caffeine. 09:51 We can appreciate the word of God 09:53 and that we are truly, fearfully and wonderfully made. 09:58 And just as a baby that develops in the womb is perfect 10:02 in every stage of development 10:05 so are we as Christians perfect 10:08 in every stage of development. 10:11 John 3:3 says, 10:14 "Except a man be born again, 10:17 he cannot see the kingdom of God." 10:21 We are to be born again in every stage of our new life. 10:25 We can be perfect, not complete 10:28 but perfect as long as we cooperate 10:31 in obedience to him. 10:33 Jesus taught this principle when He said, 10:37 "First the blade, then the ear, 10:41 after that the full corn in the ear." 10:45 These natural rules are a great parallel 10:48 in what the Lord would like to do 10:50 in all of us spiritually. 10:54 Let's looks some more and how that process works 10:58 in the growth of the baby. 11:00 At eight weeks the baby is approximately 11:03 half an inch in length. 11:05 This is just an average 11:07 as it will vary from one baby to another. 11:09 As you can see 11:11 the head is larger than the trunk 11:14 because the brain is growing rapidly. 11:17 The arms and legs are beginning to grow 11:20 and notice here what evolutionists 11:22 have falsely assumed was a tail 11:25 as evidence of our animal ancestry. 11:28 The truth is this is no tail at all 11:32 but rather the spinal cord, 11:34 it's just longer than the body 11:36 until the body catches up with it which it soon will. 11:41 At nine weeks you can see that so called tail is gone. 11:46 The babies eyes are formed and covered with eyelids 11:50 that are few shade at this point. 11:52 The fingers and toes are visible now 11:55 and the baby's moving almost continually. 11:57 But the mother can't feel it yet. 12:01 By 11 weeks the fetus has grown 12:03 to about one and half to two inches long. 12:06 The fingernails are now developing 12:09 along with teeth and taste buds. 12:11 The baby can swallow at this point. 12:14 All though it's too early to distinguish the gender, 12:18 the genitals are forming. 12:20 At 12 weeks the baby has grown 12:22 to about two to two and half inches in length 12:25 and weighs approximately half an ounce. 12:28 Up until now the mother has supplied the water 12:31 in the amniotic sac, 12:33 but now the fetal kidneys are secreting urine 12:36 that passes into the amniotic fluid. 12:40 This helps make up the needed volume of fluid in the sac. 12:45 The baby actually breathes this fluid into its lungs 12:49 and swallows it. 12:51 By doing so the lungs 12:53 and the digestive system are strengthened. 12:55 This amniotic fluid allowed for a cushioned area 12:59 for the baby to move freely about 13:02 and to exercise its body for proper bone growth. 13:06 The temperature is held steady in the womb 13:10 by the amniotic fluid. 13:12 It also protects the baby from external blows 13:16 and in addition prevents the umbilical cord 13:18 from pinching and cutting off the needed supply to the baby. 13:23 From 14 to 16 weeks the baby's growth rate accelerates. 13:29 By the 16th week it has grown to four to five inches 13:33 and weighs approximately three to three and half ounces. 13:38 By now the skin is covered with a fine hair called lanugo. 13:43 The baby can now grasp with his hands 13:46 and do summersaults and is able to hear 13:49 and respond to sounds. 13:51 Peaceful music such as hymns 13:54 and scripture songs are very edifying 13:56 for both you and your baby. 14:00 Join me next time for more about our divine design. 14:05 O for a closer 14:12 Walk with God 14:16 A calm and heavenly frame 14:27 A light... |
