The complexity of the design 00:37 exceeds anything man has ever made. 00:40 The body, it only has been designed 00:43 by the master designer we read about in the Bible. 00:47 Join us as we explore 00:49 the miraculous development for human baby. 01:08 Divine Design. 01:26 Hello, I'm Patti Barnes, 01:28 Director of the Midwifery Program 01:29 at Hartland College. 01:31 Today, we wanna look at some benefits 01:33 and the blessings of breast feeding. 01:36 As we observe the animal kingdom, 01:38 we find that all mammals nurse their young. 01:41 This was part of God's plan 01:43 to meet nutritional needs of the infant. 01:46 But man is no mere animal, 01:48 we are made in the likeness of God and consequently, 01:51 the Lord designed a special formula for mankind. 01:55 We find in the book Genesis, 01:57 that mothers breast fed their babies. 01:59 For example, we find in Genesis 21:8, 02:03 Isaac was nursed by his mother. 02:07 "And the child grew, and was weaned, 02:09 and Abraham made a great feast the same day 02:12 that Isaac was weaned." 02:14 And we all remember the story of Hannah. 02:17 who dedicated her first born, Samuel, to the Lord. 02:20 And I Samuel 1:22-23, we are told... 02:26 "But Hannah went not up, for she said unto her husband, 02:30 I will not go up until the child be weaned, 02:33 and then I will bring him, 02:34 that he may appear before the Lord, 02:36 and there abide for ever. 02:38 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, 02:41 Do what seemeth thee good, 02:43 tarry until thou have weaned him, 02:45 only the Lord establish his word. 02:48 So the woman abode, 02:49 and gave her son suck until she weaned him." 02:52 According to most commentators and early authorities, 02:56 babies were now weaned for two or three years. 02:58 However, when we consider 03:00 that man's life span was much longer 03:02 during the time of the patriots, 03:05 we have to think proportionally. 03:08 Generally, children are weaned much sooner than that, today. 03:12 The important question we want to consider, 03:14 is why mother should breast feed their babies? 03:18 Is there something unique about human breast milk, 03:20 in comparison to other animals, 03:22 especially that of cows and goats? 03:25 And what about infant formulas? 03:27 Just what is the best plan 03:29 to adopt for our precious little infants. 03:32 First, let's look at the nutritional quality 03:35 of human milk as compared to other animals. 03:38 One of the first considerations most people have, 03:41 is a protein count of milk. 03:44 After all, a growing child needs protein, right? 03:48 This chart adapted 03:49 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture 03:51 shows the amount of protein found in one cup of milk 03:55 from various animals. 03:57 Notice that cow's milk and goat's milk 03:59 have over three times, the amount of protein. 04:03 The protein count is lead to weight gain 04:06 required for each animal. 04:08 For example, a cow will double in its birth weight 04:11 in about 40 days compared to a human infant, 04:14 doubling its weight in 180 days. 04:17 Remember, God designed the milk 04:19 specifically for the growing needs of the animals. 04:23 In fact, it's not just the amount of total protein 04:26 but the types of protein as well, 04:29 that makes the big difference. 04:31 'Leucine' is an amino acid 04:33 and it's essential in the building of muscle. 04:36 Animals that double their birth weight rapidly, 04:39 have higher protein and leucine level. 04:43 The cow's is three times higher than humans. 04:47 A cat doubles its weight in about 10 days 04:50 and it's almost 10 times higher in protein and leucine. 04:54 A rat doubles its weight in the first four days 04:58 and has a protein, leucine level, 05:00 almost 12 times greater than the humans. 05:04 There are basically, two types of milk protein, 05:07 Casein and Whey. 05:10 The amount of casein protein in comparison to whey protein 05:13 varies from one animal to another. 05:16 In human milk, 05:17 the ratio is about 40 to 60 casein to whey. 05:21 Cow's milk has about an 80 to 20 ratio. 05:24 In other words, 05:25 not only does cow's milk have a greater amount of protein 05:29 but the casein is extremely more, 05:32 in comparison to breast milk. 05:34 Not only is casein difficult for humans to digest 05:38 but studies have shown a link between casein 05:41 and a variety of diseases and allergies. 05:44 Manufacturers of infant formulas, 05:46 based on cow's milk have lowered the casein 05:49 to be more like that of humans. 05:51 But there seems to still be a link 05:54 between these formulas and overweight children. 05:58 Fat should also be taken into consideration. 06:01 The total fat content of cow's milk 06:04 and human milk is similar. 06:06 But the types of fat are significantly different. 06:10 For example, cow's milk contains 06:13 much more saturated fats 06:14 and considerably less unsaturated fats 06:18 than breast milk. 06:20 In addition, the fatty acids 06:23 that are essential to brain growth 06:24 are almost non-existent in cow's milk. 06:28 The cow is designed to grow in bulk and size quickly. 06:32 But the brain, is the fastest growing part of a human infant. 06:37 There are certain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids 06:41 that are essential for brain development. 06:43 And they are not found in cow's milk. 06:47 Dr Emilie Van Wyk, who has studied extensively 06:51 in the areas of child development and education, 06:54 states that breast fed infants develop a higher IQ 06:59 and have an improved brain and nervous system. 07:03 Researchers found in studies, where children and youth, 07:06 ages 8, 12 and 18, 07:09 that they had an IQ approximately, 07:12 10-12 points higher 07:14 than children who are fed on formula. 07:17 They found that there are specific proteins in human milk 07:22 that promote brain development. 07:25 Another nutrient that gets a lot of attention is calcium. 07:29 We were all taught in formative years 07:31 that we needed lots of calcium for bone growth. 07:34 Cow's milk is actually about four times higher in calcium 07:39 than human milk. 07:40 However, the story doesn't end there. 07:43 Remember, a cow is designed to grow quickly 07:45 and needs an extra dose of calcium. 07:48 Human infants don't need all that extra calcium. 07:52 Further more, the calcium in cow's milk 07:54 is not as easily assimilated as breast milk. 07:58 It is far better to get the calcium from the milk 08:01 that comes from the mother of the offspring, 08:04 just as God has designed. 08:06 We find this to be true with many other nutrients, 08:10 iron is lacking in cow's milk 08:13 but human milk, suited for human babies. 08:16 Vitamin C is also found in greater quantities 08:20 in human milk. 08:22 Sodium on the other hand, 08:23 is in much higher quantities in cow and goat milk. 08:28 Let's compare the sodium content 08:29 of human breast milk with cow's milk, goat's milk 08:33 and infant formulas from cow and goat milk. 08:38 The following measurements are based on a 36 ounce of milk. 08:42 Higher sodium may also be a contributing factor 08:45 in overweight and obese children. 08:48 By the way, according to Dr Cohen, 08:50 a researcher in the field of lactation, 08:53 mothers who breast feed for six months or more 08:57 are less likely to become overweight or obese. 09:01 So the mother can benefit as well as the baby. 09:05 When we consider the excess protein, 09:07 calcium and sodium in cow's milk, 09:10 it is understandable 09:11 that it can tax the infant's kidneys. 09:14 Babies fed human breast milk, 09:16 show about one-third of the amount of renal solute 09:20 that must be excreted from the kidneys, 09:22 compared to those on cow's milk 09:25 and about half that are formula fed babies. 09:29 Bear in mind, that all these amount and percentages 09:32 we have mentioned are going to vary. 09:34 No two cows are exactly alike 09:37 and certainly, no two mothers 09:38 are going to produce exactly the same quality of milk. 09:42 It is important that a nursing mother 09:45 has a well balance nutritious diet, 09:48 so that she can provide a very highest quality of milk 09:52 for her new born. 09:54 Not only is the diet important but the life style as well. 09:59 Consider the statement from the Book Councils on Health, 10:02 page 79 and 80. 10:05 "The period in which the infant receives its nourishment 10:08 from its mother is critical. 10:10 Many a mother, while nursing her infant, 10:13 has been permitted to overwork, 10:15 heating her blood over the cookstove 10:18 and the nursling has been seriously affected, 10:21 not only with fevered nourishment 10:23 from the mother's breast, but its blood has been poisoned 10:27 by the unhealthy diet of the mother, 10:29 which has fevered her whole system, 10:32 thereby affecting the food of the infant. 10:36 The infant is also affected 10:38 by the condition of the mother's mind. 10:40 If she is unhappy, easily agitated, irritable, 10:44 giving vent to outbursts of passion, 10:46 the nourishment the infant receives from its mother 10:49 will be inflamed, often producing colic, spasms, 10:53 and, in some instances, causing convulsions, or fits. 10:58 The character also of the child is more or less affected 11:01 by the nature of the nourishment 11:02 received from the mother. 11:04 How important, then, that the mother, 11:07 while nursing her infant, 11:09 should preserve a happy state of mind, 11:11 having perfect control of her own spirit. 11:15 By thus doing, the food of the child is not injured, 11:18 and the calm, self-possessed course the mother pursues 11:21 in the treatment of her child 11:23 has much to do in molding the mind of the infant. 11:26 If it is nervous and easily agitated, 11:29 the mother's careful, unhurried manner 11:32 will have a soothing and correcting influence, 11:35 and the health of the infant will be much improved." 11:38 Let's look briefly at how God designed 11:41 the mechanics of breast feeding. 11:44 Remember that hormone called 'Oxytocin' 11:46 that helps stimulate contractions. 11:49 Well, that hormone also has a role to play 11:52 in combination with 'Prolactin,' 11:55 in the production of milk. 11:57 As a baby begins to suck, 11:59 the nerves convey the signal to the brain 12:01 and the pituitary gland releases these two hormone, 12:05 prolactin and oxytocin. 12:07 They in turn, will stimulate milk production. 12:11 The more the baby nurses, 12:13 the more production will take place. 12:16 The oxytocin will also stimulate contractions 12:19 to help expel the placenta. 12:21 When the baby first nurses, 12:23 the initial milk is what is called 'Colostrum,' 12:27 this is a rich creamy substance full of antibodies. 12:31 This will help strengthen the baby's immune system. 12:34 It is also easily digested, 12:36 this will continue for the first few days, 12:39 after which the matured milk will come in, 12:41 which is higher in fat and protein. 12:44 It also carries necessary antibodies 12:47 but not as much as the colostrum. 12:49 The skin to skin contact will help keep the baby warm 12:52 and promote a bonding between the baby and the mother. 12:55 There is hardly any love 12:56 that compares with the mother's love 12:58 while nursing her new born. 13:00 But we find that God's love is even greater than this. 13:04 In Isaiah 49:15, we read... 13:08 "Can a woman forget her sucking child, 13:11 that she should not have compassion 13:12 on the son of her womb? 13:14 Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee." 13:18 O for a closer walk 13:24 With God 13:28 A calm 13:30 And heavenly frame 13:38 A light to shine 13:43 Upon the road 13:49 That leads me 13:52 To the Lamb! 13:59 Return, O holy... 14:04 What a wonderful Creator we serve. 14:06 Join us next time, as we explore more 14:10 of God's amazing handiwork in the Divine Design. 14:15 Of rest 14:19 I hate the sins 14:24 That made thee mourn and... |
