00:04 Leviticus chapter 17 verses 10 and 11 says:
00:08 "And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel
00:12 or of the strangers that sojourn among you
00:15 that eateth any manor of blood
00:18 I will even set My face against that soul
00:21 that eateth blood and will cut him off from among his people.
00:25 For the life of the flesh is in the blood. "
00:29 Wow! Hello and welcome to From Sickness To Health.
00:32 I'm your host Rico Hill and I'm Sickness. Yes.
00:36 And let me guess. The topic of today's program is blood.
00:40 Yes... blood. I love talking about blood.
00:43 That figures. Yeah! Because there's that song:
00:46 "What can wash away my sins?
00:49 Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
00:51 What can make me pure within?
00:53 Nothing but the blood of Jesus. "
00:55 It is so important to have clean blood
00:58 to have good health. Rico, clean blood is boring blood.
01:03 I've got to give up my party blood, probably eat your
01:06 boring food? No thanks.
01:09 Well I'm just curious. Can I ask you a question?
01:11 Sure. What color is your blood? Do you have blue blood?
01:15 What? I'm not going to answer that question.
01:17 You always ask me questions on the program.
01:19 Do you have blue blood? It's a simple question.
01:21 Roll the program!
01:22 Oh, so you don't want to answer my question
01:24 about your blue blood! Fine. Roll it.
01:28 Exit... stage right.
02:06 Well hello there and welcome to From Sickness To Health.
02:09 Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio here.
02:13 And I'm joined by my good friend the doctor:
02:16 Dr. Schubert Palmer. And today we are going to be
02:20 talking about blood... something he knows a lot about.
02:26 In fact, Dr. Palmer is a cardiologist.
02:29 In fact, he's the chairman of the cardiology section
02:34 of the White Memorial Medical Center in LA, California.
02:38 But he does so much more than that.
02:40 And it's a wonder, it's amazing, that he can make time to come
02:43 and share with us good information about how we can be
02:47 healthy. His specialty is the heart,
02:50 but blood pumps through the heart. Welcome, doctor.
02:54 Thank you. Delighted to be here.
02:56 Now there are about eight pints of blood that just pump
02:59 through our bodies, moving through from the head to the toe
03:03 in about a minute. Um-hmm. That's about 3 miles per hour
03:06 in the average human being? Um-hmm.
03:08 So important is this blood,
03:10 yet most people don't know anything about it.
03:12 Today we want to really bring out
03:15 the importance, the power - the cleansing power - of blood.
03:21 But you've gotta have healthy blood.
03:23 Before we get into our discussion today
03:25 let's go and hear what Sickness has to say about blood.
03:31 Hey Rico. This is how we roll in Hollywood.
03:35 This is my sports car.
03:37 And according to the owner's manual they tell me to change
03:39 the oil every 3,000 miles.
03:42 The reason being it keeps the engine from seizing up
03:45 from all that dirty oil.
03:47 And I want to pay attention to that because, hey, if you have
03:49 dirty oil you could ruin the engine of your car.
03:52 You hear the similarities with the human body?
03:55 You've got a liver and kidneys to filter out
03:57 the old dirty blood, but people don't care about that stuff.
04:01 But they care about their cars!
04:03 They change the oil filter, they change their oil
04:06 and they keep it nice and clean so that pretty car can keep
04:09 running. That's what I do. Back to you, Rico.
04:13 I'm outta here.
04:14 Well... I don't know what to say about that.
04:18 Let's go ahead and get into our discussion.
04:21 I think there are some good points about what goes through
04:24 an engine and the fuel and the oil that goes into an engine,
04:28 but you know what? Blood is even more important.
04:33 Good blood is even better than good oil in a car,
04:36 so let's talk about good blood.
04:38 Can I start off, doctor, by reading a statement
04:40 that I think is just so powerful?
04:42 This is found in a book that...
04:46 that I love and enjoy. It says:
04:48 "In order to have good health we must have good blood
04:54 for the blood is the current of life.
04:58 It repairs waste and nourishes the body
05:01 when supplied with the proper food elements
05:05 and when cleansed and vitalized by contact with pure air
05:10 it carries life and vigor to every part of the system.
05:16 The more perfect the circulation
05:19 the better this will be accomplished. "
05:23 And that is from a book called Counsels for the Church
05:29 page 218. Wow!
05:31 What is blood being applied to the church for?
05:37 Well, as a physician and a scientist, I can validate that
05:41 statement to the "T. " I mean, my life's work
05:44 has to do with trying to correct folk who've had
05:47 "bad blood. " Bad blood... I like that!
05:53 Yeah, and there is... You won't find that in a
05:56 scientific textbook... bad blood... I guarantee that.
06:00 But if we can get our circulation right,
06:04 99% of our problems - at least 90% -
06:08 would disappear.
06:09 And when you think about this amazing body that we have -
06:13 yes - did you know that you have over 60,000
06:18 miles of blood vessels? It sounded like you said miles
06:21 but I think you meant 60,000 feet, right?
06:24 It sounds that way, but no. 60,000 to 100,000 miles
06:28 of blood vessels. This could go around the planet!
06:31 Just three of us and we could reach the moon!
06:35 That's the amount of circulation. Now they range
06:38 in size from the large arteries, you know, like the aorta -
06:42 like an inch size. Yeah. And they will get down
06:45 to the size of the arteriole which is 2/100 of an inch
06:48 down to the capillary size where they are so small
06:52 that the red blood cells have to squeeze through
06:56 these little capillaries one at a time.
07:00 Whoa! So if you can keep your circulation free and clear
07:05 you've gone a mighty long way to having good health.
07:09 So... the key to really good health
07:12 is having pure blood,
07:14 and that pure blood needs to be uninhibited
07:18 or impeded by anything so that it is circulating
07:23 at the rate of speed because it's taking things.
07:26 It's... Blood is not just blood. It's actually
07:30 sort of a transportation, sort of, mechanism. Isn't it?
07:33 Um-hmm. What is it moving through the body?
07:35 In fact, you can consider it like the current of life,
07:37 the river of life. The river! Bringing...
07:41 bringing nutrients - um-hmm - and probably the most important,
07:45 they're all important... but oxygen... Oxygen!
07:48 in those red blood cells. When you look at blood
07:51 55% or 54% is liquid or plasma. Yeah.
07:55 And then the other 45% are solid material,
07:58 the majority of which are the red blood cells
08:00 that are responsible for carrying the oxygen
08:03 in the hemoglobin molecule. Um-hmm.
08:05 And then bringing the "waste" back, or the carbon dioxide.
08:10 Maybe 70% of the carbon dioxide just is in the blood itself.
08:15 A percentage of it gets in the red blood cells
08:19 but most of it is just within the blood system itself.
08:22 So you have the oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange.
08:25 But that's only the beginning.
08:27 Now we have to look at the nutrients.
08:30 What are some of the... the hor- mones you have running around?
08:35 The body communicates by hormones and the brain will
08:39 send some hormones by the blood to the different organs.
08:42 If they are in trouble, they will send their signals
08:44 by the blood. So it's communication.
08:46 Communication network. Transportation; communication.
08:49 And the list goes on. OK. And then the immune system
08:54 is vitally dependent on the blood.
08:57 You have this array of white blood cells
09:00 that are designed to detect foreign invaders,
09:04 whether that is bacteria, viruses, or even cells that have
09:08 gone astray... the cancer cells. Aah!
09:11 And every one of us the thinking goes
09:14 during the course of our lifetime will have
09:16 anywhere from... hmmm... up to 250 cancer cells
09:21 that might form. Now your body has 100 trillion cells.
09:25 A hundred trillion? And trying to detect problems
09:29 in only 250... how do you do that?
09:33 The blood system is set up along with the lymphatic system
09:36 and so on to detect those cells
09:39 and to literally gobble up those cancer cells
09:43 before they cause trouble.
09:44 Diet is going to play a big part
09:46 in... because of the statement that I read...
09:48 the food that we eat is pretty much converted
09:51 to blood. Um-hmm. That's where our blood comes from.
09:54 That's how we make blood.
09:55 Good nutrition in... good, pure blood. Right?
09:59 But we're finding in a lot of communities,
10:01 certainly the African-American community and some others,
10:04 we have a higher incidence of hypertension and heart disease
10:08 and these kinds of things because our blood is not pure.
10:12 So we're talking about... we're still talking about
10:14 blood, though, because really we're told in Leviticus
10:19 chapter 17 and verse 11:
10:34 So the life of the flesh is in the blood.
10:37 Now I don't know if people would consider this to be
10:40 science, but in the Bible it says that the life of the flesh
10:45 is in the blood. When a person goes in for
10:48 a routine doctor's visit
10:50 what are they going to check and why?
10:52 They will do a physical examination. Of course,
10:55 a careful history, but usually they will do
10:58 a blood test. And you need to see
11:02 an inside view as to what's happening.
11:05 And one of the best ways to do that is to get some
11:09 blood tests done and you can get the answers
11:12 to many things. And nowadays it's even more fancy
11:15 with different tests that we have available.
11:17 So, if I want to know if someone might be...
11:21 On the other end of that video you were talking about
11:25 immune function and, you know,
11:28 we have trillions of blood cells
11:30 but at the same time 250 could be cancerous!
11:34 Right? So if we're going to be able to detect whether there is
11:38 cancer in the blood, are we saying that
11:41 through a blood test we can detect things like cancer?
11:44 By the time we detect cancer in a person
11:49 on the best science that we have right now
11:51 it's usually been around for five years or more.
11:55 So no... Blood tests are good for screening
11:58 but they're picking up the damage after it's been way gone.
12:03 So the old adage is true: a pound of prevention
12:08 is... or an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
12:11 Aah! So this is what it comes down to.
12:13 Again we're seeing that no matter what you may be
12:17 genetically predisposed to - that means, you know, having
12:20 something passed down from mama or daddy
12:24 or grandpa. But it really comes down to
12:27 how... or what measures are you taking to prevent
12:31 sickness and disease, right?
12:33 For the majority of cases that is true.
12:36 The majority of cases? There are like 70% I've read.
12:39 Um-hmm... yes. Or even more!
12:42 Or even higher. So I like this expression...
12:44 maybe you can expound upon it a little more...
12:46 and that is: "genetics loads the gun" - um-hmm -
12:51 "but your lifestyle pulls the trigger. " Pulls the trigger,
12:54 yes. Let me give you an example: for the heart disease
12:58 there are what they call
13:01 single nucleotide polymorphisms.
13:04 Big word, but these are genetic mutations
13:06 in the DNA - um-hmm - that lead to abnormalities
13:11 that predispose you to, say, heart disease.
13:14 And so we've figured out a lot of them.
13:17 And one of them in particular that they found out that's
13:21 pretty common, and they found that things like "fish oil"
13:25 can actually help that one.
13:27 But that's just one. And each of these mutations
13:31 has their own baggage with them.
13:33 Now... if you come down with a mutation problem,
13:37 and we all are damaged goods...
13:40 No matter what we do? Yes, and you can't change your genes.
13:45 Right. But the research is confirming that even though
13:48 you may have had bad genes - and there are a few exceptions
13:51 like people that have one called progeria in which
13:54 10-year-old kids get heart attacks
13:56 because they age so rapidly. One in 20 million people.
14:00 Very rare. Very rare. So the majority of problems
14:03 that we are seeing today cannot just be laid at the
14:06 "excuse" if you will of having bad genes
14:10 because the lifestyle that we develop will directly affect it.
14:15 And I have a good example of Mr. I Hate Beans.
14:18 Aah... OK. Well... Mr. I Hate Beans.
14:22 You just heard that. We're going to talk about
14:24 Mr. I Hate Beans. Tell us about Mr. I Hate Beans.
14:27 So this gentlemen walked into my office... OK.
14:30 Actually, I first saw him in the emergency room again.
14:32 Most of my people I see in the emergency room first.
14:35 And so he's having a heart attack.
14:37 We rush him to the cath lab. We went ahead and did a stent,
14:41 opened up the blocked artery.
14:42 And I talked to him about changing his lifestyle.
14:45 He didn't. He was smoking, eating at all the fast food
14:48 places. Every bad habit he had.
14:50 Around 2 or 3 heart attacks later and another 4-5 stents...
14:53 Two or three heart attacks?
14:55 Um-hmm. So then he comes in and we have to do a bypass
14:58 surgery. OK... so he got the bypass surgery
15:01 and now it's around five years from the first time I saw him.
15:07 And now he is saying: "I am having this severe
15:10 chest pain. I am using 100 nitroglycerine tablets a day. "
15:13 The pills you put under your tongue when you have chest
15:16 discomfort. Yeah. And he says:
15:18 "I can't walk to my bathroom unless I take a nitro. "
15:22 And so he comes into my office and he says:
15:25 "So Dr. Palmer... am I going to die? "
15:27 And I looked him in the eye and sadly said:
15:30 "Yes, you are going to die. " You had to be that honest?
15:32 I had to be straightforward with him.
15:34 And he says: "So can I? "
15:36 "Every time you come in, " I said, "your lifestyle changes.
15:39 I mean, a simple thing is eat your beans
15:42 and lentils, you know. Stay away from a lot of the food
15:46 that you are having and have more of the food as grown."
15:49 Plant-based diet versus the high-fat, saturated fried food.
15:52 Yes. And he just said: "I can't do it. "
15:55 OK. And so what happened over this time: now he's having
15:59 100 nitroglycerine tablets a day.
16:01 He is going to die. Yeah, I did an angiogram.
16:04 The surgeon said: "I would not touch that man with a 20 foot
16:07 pole. He would die on the table."
16:09 I couldn't do any more angioplasties.
16:11 There was nothing there when I did the angiogram.
16:14 No arteries that you could see. I knew that we were in trouble.
16:17 So I told him: "Yes, you can go back home
16:20 to your country to say goodbye to your folk.
16:23 You know, since you are not listening to me, just prepare
16:26 to die. " I prepared him. You know, we had a prayer
16:29 and my heart was... You prayed with him?
16:31 I pray with a lot of my patients when they allow me to.
16:33 Absolutely. Praise God! And so when I said goodbye
16:37 I knew I would never see him again. Three months later
16:40 this man walks through the door with the picture of perfect
16:43 health on him. You've gotta be kidding me!
16:46 I said: "Mr. I Hate Beans! "
16:48 That's what you called him? Well...
16:52 That's what you were thinking.
16:53 I said: "You are alive? What happened?
16:56 You're supposed to be dead. "
16:58 And then he said... His wife was with him and she confirmed
17:01 the story. She said: "I cannot keep up walking with this man. "
17:04 And I said: "So sit down; tell me what happened. "
17:07 He said: "Well, I went back to my home country
17:09 up in the hills where we live. "
17:11 And he said: "Where we live we are so poor
17:14 the only food that they had for me to eat
17:17 were lentils and beans. "
17:20 And then he said: "We are so poor, I couldn't walk
17:24 anywhere. I mean, I couldn't take a taxi.
17:26 I couldn't afford... " They couldn't afford taxis.
17:28 So he had to walk. "So I HAD to walk. "
17:30 And then he said: "We are so poor
17:32 we didn't have a TV, so I had to go into the backyard
17:35 and garden to spend time. "
17:37 What? So there was time out in the fresh air
17:41 in the sunshine and he was walking!
17:44 He was walking. And this turned his situation around.
17:46 Turned his situation around.
17:48 Wow! I'm sorry... go ahead.
17:51 What happened is when you look at an artery
17:55 the inside lining of the artery
17:57 there are special cells called endothelial cells.
18:01 They make their own nitroglycerine.
18:03 And to make their nitroglycerine for this inner lining of the
18:07 arteries they need to have... L-arginine is the building block
18:13 from which they can make nitric oxide.
18:16 Um-hmm. And nitric oxide is the most potent basal dilator
18:20 and also one of the most potent chemotherapy,
18:22 cancer-fighting chemicals known to man.
18:25 So fighting the cancer but also keeping the blood vessels
18:28 and the veins and arteries open.
18:30 All natural. Just naturally! Um-hmm.
18:32 From beans? Beans and lentils.
18:35 And these are high in the L-arginine foods
18:38 that your body uses to make nitric oxide.
18:42 Let's see if the people on the street know about
18:44 the goodness of beans and good blood and a good heart.
18:47 Let's turn to that.
18:51 Let me ask you a question. We're going to get all
18:53 "sciency" here. How fast does blood flow?
18:58 Very fast. Very fast? Very fast.
19:01 She didn't get good grades in school. I need some
19:02 specifics here. How fast does blood flow?
19:07 You know what? I was not very good in my science class
19:12 so... The answer is: too fast.
19:15 Blood needs to slow down because you know what?
19:18 It needs to slow down a little. All these people talking about
19:21 good circulation? You gotta let blood just do what it does.
19:25 Just do what it does. Coagulate... yes!
19:29 Do you like happy blood? I don't know what happy blood is.
19:32 Look, the way to get happy BLUE blood
19:35 is to sit on the couch, put your feet up, eat whatever you want
19:38 as often as you want and don't go to sleep.
19:41 See, that's the thing. Blue blood - slow blood -
19:45 is good blood. You see what I'm saying?
19:48 I think you see what I'm saying. You guys: you have good
19:51 blood flow? Yes. You have blue blood?
19:54 Yes. OK... circulation: how fast do you think in the
19:58 human body is circulation? How often does that happen?
20:00 How fast does it go?
20:02 I'm gettin' a little "sciency" on you... I'm pretty smart.
20:04 Hmm... I don't know.
20:07 He doesn't know. But you're smart... you look smart.
20:10 I have no idea. No idea.
20:12 You? No idea. No idea.
20:14 Do you like the sight of blood? The sight of it?
20:16 I mean, you like to look at blood itself. Nah.
20:19 No? Nah. I mean, you don't like blood.
20:21 I don't like blood. I mean, there's all this confusion
20:24 out there about blood. I think in concept
20:27 people like clean blood but in reality people like party blood.
20:33 They like the buzz, so don't be a buzzkill.
20:37 Clean blood sounds good but people would rather have
20:40 party blood, happy blood. Back to you, Rico.
20:47 Whoo! What can you say?
20:49 What can I say? People have their own ideas.
20:51 Um-hmm. But you know, what we like to do on this program
20:55 is really give, you know, really good science
20:58 and give you the truth. Dispel the myths and misconceptions
21:01 of these things and also go to the Word of God.
21:04 And, you know, at one point our doctor mentioned that,
21:08 you know, when we have good blood we're also transporting
21:12 these white blood cells which is our immune function.
21:15 And it says in Isaiah chapter 59 and verse 19
21:19 it says: "So shall they fear the name of the Lord
21:22 from the west and His glory from the rising of the sun.
21:25 When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the
21:30 Lord shall lift up a standard against him. "
21:34 So when the enemy - that is any type of pathogen or
21:38 bacterial/viral infection comes in,
21:41 God has a standard, doesn't He, that He raises up in the body.
21:45 But not only that, He's already given us a standard.
21:48 He's given us a healthy diet and all the things from the garden.
21:52 The fruits, the vegetables and the things that are good for us
21:56 to eat and will give us pure blood making good life.
22:00 Is that right? That's an awesome thing to know.
22:03 And to think that your best medicine can be found
22:07 in the produce section of the supermarket.
22:09 You mean not in the middle aisles where you can go and find
22:13 the things that are at eye level and that have lots of
22:16 descriptions and ingredients that you can't pronounce?
22:19 Not those? Not those. OK... so, you know, I want to
22:22 look at these things because this is a stent.
22:25 This is a stent that you often have to put in someone.
22:29 Is this? This has become almost commonplace.
22:32 In fact, our president... president. I mean our president.
22:37 He's former president, but Bill Clinton
22:39 he had one of these placed in him, didn't he?
22:41 He did. Not just one... he had several.
22:43 And when he saw his cardiologist at the time they told him
22:46 "Well, you're growing old and this is just a natural
22:48 process for growing old. "
22:51 That's what they told him? Unfortunately. They were wrong!
22:55 Well, I don't like to say anything about my colleagues
22:58 but just... The information was that...
23:01 We are able in a program like this to tell the truth.
23:07 The whole truth... and nothing but the truth...
23:09 and nothing but the truth. Amen!
23:10 So he had to get several of these in,
23:13 but that wasn't enough. And maybe some time on a later
23:17 program we'll show exactly what he said.
23:19 Because everyone was interviewing him and asking
23:23 "How did you overcome your issue? "
23:26 Um-hmm. And he tells the story.
23:28 He had to get several stents but his doctors told him
23:31 "You've got to change... " What?
23:33 You have to change your lifestyle... which the diet was
23:36 very critical. Diet was a part of it.
23:38 And now he's what we call a vegan.
23:43 And a vegan is basically someone who just has
23:45 a plant-based diet. Um-hmm. So we can avoid this thing.
23:49 Now is that painful? Well, of course not.
23:57 It is radical but it's not painful.
23:59 Well it is... sometimes. Let me tell the truth.
24:03 The whole truth and nothing but the truth!
24:05 We use local anesthesia and you're a little sedated.
24:08 And sometimes I will sing for my patients
24:10 if they really need the big anesthesia.
24:12 But after you have it in and you're walking around
24:15 you don't notice it but... No you don't.
24:17 For a while, though, you would feel some discomfort?
24:19 Would you? No... not necessarily.
24:21 If it's doing it's job it will be OK.
24:23 However, if your lifestyle hasn't changed
24:26 the process is starting to start up again or in another
24:30 area. And if you have to have a big surgery,
24:33 the bypass surgery, that one you will feel for quite a while.
24:38 Aah, well I tell you Dr. Palmer, thank you so much.
24:41 We're running out of time but we could just go on
24:44 for days and days. But here's the thing:
24:46 we know that there's a simple solution to this problem.
24:51 Let's eat better. Let's eat a diet that is...
24:54 or eat a diet that is going to be heart-healthy
24:58 and promote good blood and good health.
25:00 Because that is the river of life, and we want life,
25:04 don't we? Absolutely.
25:06 We'll see you next time here on From Sickness To Health.
25:08 Thank you, doctor. Appreciate it. My pleasure.
25:14 Today we have learned that in order to have good health
25:17 we must have good blood
25:19 for the blood is "the current of life. "
25:23 If you have a blood that is more acidic,
25:26 you have a garden where disease and sickness will thrive.
25:32 I go to places like the desert and everything is dry and dead.
25:35 But when there's a river there you'll see the green trees
25:39 and everything is flourishing.
25:40 That's what the blood is referred to: an actual river
25:44 of life. Wow! When you have good circulation
25:48 you'll have good health. It's amazing to me that
25:52 whatever we eat is converted to blood.
25:56 You eat an apple... it's going to turn into blood.
25:59 Eat a candy bar? Well... I'm not so sure.
26:02 But here's the thing: God desires us to have pure blood.
26:06 God designed this incredible organism
26:10 to be able to live because of this current of life.
26:14 I understand. I get it.
26:16 Look... you saw my sports car. I take care of it.
26:19 I understand that with good oil I have a good healthy car.
26:23 With dirty oil the engine will seize up.
26:25 I understand that, just like I understand all this stuff
26:27 you were talking about with the blood and the body.
26:29 That's not the issue. You're trying to take the fun
26:33 out of life. And people want to have a little party blood.
26:36 They want to have some fun in life, not eat all these leaf
26:39 things and gross stuff you've got to eat.
26:41 I'm sorry. I hate to cut you off but I heard you say
26:43 people want to have a little life. Well,
26:46 actually Leviticus 17:11 says
26:50 that "the life of the flesh is in the blood. "
26:54 Without good blood you have no life.
26:59 Aah! Let's listen to what God has said
27:02 to us regarding the life of this flesh being in the blood.
27:06 Well, that's our program for today.
27:08 I leave you with this as always: III John 2 says:
27:11 "Beloved, I wish above all things
27:14 that thou mayest prosper and be in health. "
27:17 I'm Rico Hill... I'm Sickness.
27:19 Maranatha.
