00:01 The Psalmist says in Psalm 107 verse 1:
00:05 "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so 00:07 whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. " 00:11 Hello and welcome to From Sickness To Health. 00:14 I'm your host Rico Hill and this is my... 00:18 friend. What're you doing? 00:22 I'm practicing how to pass the test 00:25 in case I get stopped. Stopped by whom? 00:29 The police! They pull people over all the time 00:33 for drinking and driving. Now 1, 2, 3, 4... 00:38 Why would they stop you? Have you been drinking? 00:41 Is this going to be on TV? Uh... yes! 00:44 Then no! Are you going to keep doing this? 00:51 Is this going to be on TV? 00:53 YES! Then yes! Now hop, hop, hop, hop, hop... 01:04 I guess you're passing with flying colors, aren't you? 01:06 Yes... absolutely! Flying blue colors. Thanks for asking. 01:12 Well, in today's program we are going to talk about 01:16 wine and alcohol... 01:19 which we weren't supposed to drink by the way. 01:22 Oh, is this the part where you're going to give a Bible 01:24 verse? Well let me give you the Bible text: 01:25 "A little wine is good for the stomach. " 01:29 And a little wine after work is good. 01:33 And on the way home is good. 01:35 And a little nightcap is good. 01:38 Wine is good, and it never hurt nobody. 01:43 Well... while he misuses the Bible 01:46 we're going to go into this topic today about 01:49 wine and see if it's true that a little wine 01:52 never hurt nobody. Roll it! And kick it to the right. 02:35 Thank you for joining us here in the studio of 02:38 From Sickness To Health. 02:39 We're so glad that you stuck around. 02:41 Today we have another exciting program to talk to you about 02:45 to share with you some information that you will find 02:48 helpful and useful. Now, we're going to be covering a topic 02:52 that a lot of people... There's a lot of confusion 02:54 surrounding this topic, and it's really temperance. 02:58 Temperance. We want to know today what is temperance. 03:01 And we're using wine and the use of alcohol 03:04 as a springboard. So we've got a lot to share with you today. 03:08 But before we get into the conversation with my esteemed 03:11 guests I want to say hello to our friend Sickness. 03:14 Where are you? What's going on? 03:15 Well, let's just say I didn't pass the test 03:19 so I'm going to encourage the local jail inmates. 03:22 Oh yes, officer... gotta go! 03:25 We'll hear back from him in a few moments. 03:28 I'm sure he's got more to share with us. 03:30 But let's introduce our guests. 03:36 All right. It's all right. Dr. Thomas Jackson is with us 03:40 today. We're glad to have you here with us once again. 03:42 He is a doctor of natural health sciences 03:47 and he's with his lovely wife, Dr. Laverne Jackson. 03:50 And she is a doctor of nutritional sciences. 03:54 Thank you for being here. Thank you for having us. 03:57 Ah yes, we're going to have fun today, aren't we? 03:58 It's already started, right? It's already started. 04:00 We can't leave out our other couple. 04:03 We like having couples here, and today we have also with us 04:06 Reidland Bredy and his lovely wife Sherry-Lynne Bredy. 04:09 Now he is a physical therapist and she is an occupational 04:12 therapist. Do you see how that matches together? 04:15 What a couple! Thank you so much for being with us. 04:16 Thank you, Rico. We appreciate your being here. 04:19 Now, so we're talking about... we're using wine as a 04:23 springboard because there's confusion around it. 04:25 But there are other items that we use as food 04:29 that also create a little bit of confusion... because why? 04:33 There are conflicting reports from the news 04:37 that tell us one day that it's good 04:39 and then the next day it's bad. Um-hmm. 04:40 One day it's good and then a report seemingly 04:44 from peer reviewed sources - 04:47 scientific resources, right? - 04:49 that say... that will come and contradict 04:52 the one that came out just a few days before. 04:54 What are we to do? 04:56 I think we have to go to a source that is reliable. 05:00 So what are we going to do? We go to the Bible! 05:02 We go the Bible. We go to the supreme source 05:05 of all information and of all knowledge. 05:08 So... we want to really deal with this today 05:10 by looking at what the Bible says is temperance, right? 05:14 That's right. So... before we do that... 05:17 let's go and figure out what happened to Sickness. OK. 05:20 I'm a little concerned about him... I'm a little concerned 05:23 so let's see where he is, if he got out of this mess. 05:28 Thank you, Rico... thank you very much. 05:30 You know, the youth of today are tomorrow's leaders. 05:38 We're here on a university campus where recreational 05:41 drug use and social drinking is cultivated. 05:45 You know, while cigarette smoking is down 05:48 marijuana usage is up... WAY UP! 05:52 But hey, that's a different subject for another time. 05:55 You know, let's talk about drinking specifically. 05:59 What would college be like without beer, wine, 06:03 and alcohol? It wouldn't be the same. 06:06 You see, the trick is the cool advertising during 06:09 the sporting events we watch. 06:11 Maybe it's the music... the dancing, the girls. 06:16 Look at all of these potential substance abusers! 06:20 You know, if you can get them to do some drugs 06:22 or a little alcohol their inhibitions go away. 06:28 When that happens you can get these folks 06:30 to do just about anything and everything 06:36 EXCEPT care for their health 06:39 or the health of others. 06:41 It's a beautiful thing. They'll even drink and drive. 06:45 Yeah. And do you think they care about health 06:47 or the health of others? 06:49 THIS is where they become our experts. 06:53 Back to you, Rico. 06:57 Well... it looks like our friend got out of a mess. 07:01 We're going to have to find out how he did, but let's go into 07:04 our discussion. So we have agreed that the Bible is our 07:08 supreme authority in this matter, and we have agreed... 07:13 we have agreed that wine is something that creates 07:16 confusion. Some people say drink it; 07:19 some people say don't. Some people say it's healthy 07:21 and good for the heart; others say it might cause 07:24 some other lifestyle diseases. 07:27 How do we get to what is actually true in this matter? 07:31 And we're going to go to this. 07:33 Isn't that right, Dr. Jackson? That is absolutely right. 07:36 He used the Bible in - that is, Sickness - 07:38 he used it in our little introduction there. 07:42 He said that: "a little wine is good. " 07:46 For the stomach. And you know what? 07:49 They're saying the same thing: "Wine is good. 07:53 I agree with that guy. " 07:55 What do you say? Well, it might catch you off guard. 07:58 I agree too. Oh! What? 08:01 Yes. A little wine is good for the stomach's sake. 08:05 However... I knew there was a however... 08:08 however, we need to let the Word of God define 08:11 what this wine is. All right... let's do it. 08:14 And we find that... Now Sickness quoted I Timothy chapter 5 08:19 verse 23. That's where, just in case our audience wants to know, 08:22 that's what he's quoting. And the fact is is that 08:24 we do believe that wine, but as we let the Bible explain 08:28 one of the places in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 8. 08:32 They might want to just jot that down. Can we go there? 08:35 Oh, we should go there. 08:37 Well, let's just go there. We're going to the book of Isaiah... 08:39 Isaiah chapter 65 and verse 8. 08:42 Yeah, that's just... Isaiah 65 and verse 8. 08:45 And because for the sake of time, we just look at this 08:47 verse, and anyone that really studies the Word of God... 08:50 In Isaiah 65 verse 8 notice what it says: 08:53 It says: "Thus says the Lord 08:56 as the new wine is found in the cluster. " 09:01 Wait a minute. Cluster... that suggests that 09:04 we're talking about fresh wine that is in the grape. 09:07 That's right. OK. And we must draw the conclusion 09:10 this is non-fermented grape. 09:13 Now you need to explain. What are we talking about when we say 09:16 fermented? Well we realize that when we're talking about 09:20 new wine in the cluster it has not been left over 09:25 to turn to what we call alcohol. 09:27 There is a bacteria that grows in there that creates a 09:30 fermentation that gives us that sensational feeling. 09:34 Um-hmm. Inebriation. It's inebriation... just like 09:37 food ferments, it's sour. It's sour? It's sour. 09:40 You have to let it sit in order for it to just mellow. 09:44 Thank you for explaining that. Let's continue. 09:46 And so here we find the new wine is found in the cluster. 09:50 "And one said: 'Destroy it not for... ' Why? 09:52 'a blessing is in it. ' " Oh, that's so clear. 09:56 So therefore this new wine 09:57 which is - they must draw the conclusion - is really pure 10:00 grape juice. You hear that? Grape juice! 10:04 Grape juice! Hey Rico! 10:07 Yes Sickness? Well let's just say that 10:10 the guy that was trying to take me away: he likes some 10:13 Twinkies and doughnuts... so I got totally out of that one. 10:16 But hey! I want to bring some light on this discussion. 10:18 There was a reason Jesus' first and most magnificent miracle 10:23 was turning water into wine. Gotcha! 10:27 Gotcha! Did he get us? 10:30 Does he have us? Does he have us? 10:33 I think he's played right into your hands. Oh! 10:35 Well let's break it down. 10:37 Just the fact is that that water to wine 10:39 because remember, we stated that this wine is new wine. 10:43 Is new wine! It's new wine. It's not fermented; it's not sour; 10:46 it's not mellowed. It's still in the cluster. It's still in 10:48 the cluster, so the water to wine: 10:52 fresh... no fermentation. God never, you know, 10:56 introduced into His ministry fermented wine. 10:59 This wine was fresh wine from the grapes you see. 11:03 Fresh wine. In fact, I believe 11:05 that it was said to Jesus: "You've saved the best. " 11:11 "For last. " And the Bible says, the new wine 11:15 is the best... it's the blessing. Is the blessing! 11:19 That's right. It's a blessing. 11:21 What are you? I hear something... 11:24 Well, all this conversation is excellent because 11:28 you know, it's important to differentiate between that 11:31 new wine that Dr. Jackson men- tioned and the fermented wine. 11:35 It's old. Yes, it's old and fermented. It's aged 11:38 just like cheese is, but we'll get on that later. 11:40 Anyway, so when Jesus did it... Jesus, knowing 11:46 the Old Testament very well, 11:50 He would quote from Proverbs 20 verse 1 11:53 "Wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging, 11:57 and whosoever is deceived by it is not wise. " 12:02 Wow! Period. 12:04 Now I want to remind us... I want to remind us that we're 12:07 now talking about what happens physically 12:10 as a result of wine and alcohol. 12:14 But do not think for a moment that we're not going to bring 12:17 this back around to the spiritual implications. 12:21 Is that right? Um-hmm. 12:22 So... All right... So... go ahead. 12:24 Just one more point as well 12:26 since we're talking about the overall theme of temperance. 12:30 Um-hmm. And one of my favorite quotes from the Bible is... 12:33 is I Thessalonians 5 where it says to "prove all things" - 12:37 um-hmm - "and hold fast to that which is good. " 12:41 OK. "Abstain from all appearance of evil. " 12:45 So there God is telling us, you know, "test everything. " 12:50 Make sure that it's according to the Word of God 12:52 and hold only to that which is good. 12:55 Because just as God created all things in creation 12:58 and said it was good it is good. 13:01 Those things that are good for your body that do not produce 13:04 any harm - um-hmm - is what we should cling to - 13:07 that's right - and then abstain from that which 13:10 has even the appearance - that's right - of evil. 13:13 Very good. Now, Sr. Jackson - yes - 13:16 your husband has pointed out that we're talking about grape 13:20 juice. Yes. So you as a doctor of nutritional sciences 13:25 you need to tell us what's in that grape juice 13:28 and what's in that wine that researchers are confused over. 13:32 Well, there is an antioxidant, resveratrol, that helps to 13:37 slow down the degeneration of the cells. 13:41 That's what's in that unfermented grape juice. 13:46 Ah... excellent. So we're talking about resveratrol 13:49 and it is an antioxidant. We know that that fights 13:52 free radicals, right? That's right. So there will not 13:55 be the stress that's on the cells 13:57 as it would be when we have something that is fermented. 14:02 That's right. And highly acidic. That's right. 14:05 That decreases the oxygen and also accelerates 14:08 the degeneration of those cells. 14:10 So... completely opposite! It's just the opposite. 14:12 Now when someone is having that acidic, fermented alcohol 14:16 or a mixed drink or wine or whatever you want to 14:20 call it, oftentimes we see that people have gotten into 14:24 some serious issues beyond what we saw with Sickness. 14:27 We're talking about accidents. Um-hmm. 14:30 We're talking about people having serious car accidents. 14:33 Totaling cars. The drunk driver... you've heard the 14:35 story: they wreck their car. They walk away with a 14:39 scratch, but oftentimes people are killed 14:41 or they're maimed or they have to go through some 14:43 serious rehabilitation with an occupational therapist. 14:48 Is that right? What are you seeing? 14:50 Yeah. I work a lot with patients who have traumatic 14:53 brain injuries, and usually because of car accidents. 14:56 And they're usually inebriated. 14:58 So all those damaged cells that you were talking about 15:01 is damaging their brain. So they have a hard time walking. 15:05 They have blurred vision, loss of memory. 15:07 Some of them even have blackouts. 15:09 That's usually what's causing those car accidents. 15:11 A lot of them are the young people in their 20's, 30's 15:14 and even... College age. College age. 15:16 They are the ones that end up with brain injuries. 15:19 And they usually have to live at home. They can't function 15:22 as much... can't work. 15:23 And we just have to try to do out best to get them 15:25 back and rehabilitated so they can at least be 15:28 independent again. Wow! So we see that what 15:31 Sickness was sharing with us wasn't too far off the mark. 15:34 No. You get them started in college, start drinking there. 15:38 And he said that they will not really care not only about 15:42 their own health but even the safety and the health 15:44 of others. Now if God is a loving God, 15:48 why would He produce something 15:51 that would cause people to have this kind of behavior? 15:54 Now I know what people are saying... would say: 15:55 "It should be done in moderation. " 15:58 That's a good thing just like the temperance. 16:00 That's right. I believe it was Oscar Wilde who said: 16:02 "Moderation in all things including moderation. " 16:08 Very true. I don't even know what to do with that. 16:11 And a lot of others have said something similar. 16:13 So we need to look at a clip here because it's confusing. 16:16 And not only with wine - and we're going to come back 16:19 to wine - but also with coffee... caffeine. 16:22 And I have some clips that we put together that show 16:24 that not even the experts agree! Ummm! 16:27 So let's take a look at that clip. 16:30 A new study published this week shows that the caffeine 16:33 in 3 cups of coffee a day 16:36 may actually help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's 16:39 and prevent memory loss. 16:41 The headline is: for men under 55 16:44 more than 4 cups a day meant a 56% increased 16:47 risk of an early death. 16:49 For women it was 113%. 16:53 Everything in moderation. Linzie Janis, ABC News. 16:57 Single skim latte. A new study suggests you 17:01 may want to increase that shot to a double or even triple 17:05 because coffee may be the key to a longer life. 17:08 Even a single cup a day could modestly improve longevity, 17:11 although the report didn't say by how much. 17:13 So what this study does is gives a little bit of reassurance 17:16 to us when we're drinking our coffee in the morning. 17:19 We're a little more assured that the coffee isn't going to 17:22 have adverse effects on our health. 17:24 The study shows coffee drinkers were less likely to 17:26 die from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, injuries and 17:29 infections than those who didn't drink it. 17:31 But it's not clear why. 17:33 The authors caution the results don't outright prove 17:36 coffee has the power to stave off death. 17:39 And I tell you no one cup of coffee is going to kill you, 17:42 but the study has made a lot of people wonder 17:44 if I'm drinking a lot of coffee day after day 17:47 what's it going to do to me? 17:48 Well, we have some answers for you. 17:52 Conflicting studies about coffee and your health 17:55 are brewing up confusion. 17:57 I don't know... is it good for me? Is it bad? 18:00 I mean: should I drink it? Should I not? 18:02 I find the information confusing, but I just drink 18:06 it anyway. Like I drink like ten cups a day. 18:09 But a recent study says may be should learn to live 18:12 without it or perhaps not quite so much of it. 18:14 The study found that people under age 55 18:17 who drank four or more cups a day 18:19 were 50% more likely to die during the course of the 18:23 16-year study. And we're talking about 8 ounce cups of coffee... 18:27 not the giant drinks that many people like to order. 18:30 Coffee might hurt you by increasing your chances 18:33 of getting gastrointestinal cancer. 18:35 Plus... the stimulant from coffee with caffeine could 18:39 cause irregular heart rhythms. BUT... and it's a big BUT... 18:44 several other studies have found that coffee is actually 18:47 good for you decreasing the likelihood 18:49 that you'll get Alzheimer's, type II diabetes, 18:52 and other diseases. 18:53 So what's a java lover to do? 18:55 When you smell coffee you know it's time to get your day going. 18:59 Some doctors say you can hedge your bets. 19:01 Mark Twain once said: "Everything in moderation... " 19:05 Well... you see the confusion. 19:08 It could stave off Alzheimer's disease. 19:11 It could help with stroke and heart disease. 19:14 At the same time those who drink coffee 19:18 they have an early death. 19:21 What's the truth? 19:23 They said themselves that there's a lot of confusion. 19:26 That's right. Now... where does this confusion come from? 19:29 And we talked about the wine and we talked about the 19:31 antioxidants and that. And we know that coffee also 19:34 is rich in antioxidants. Um-hmm. So maybe they're 19:36 looking at that but they're not looking at some other 19:39 more dangerous effects of it. That's right. 19:40 So there's a mixing here. There's a mixture. 19:42 And mixing is giving us confusion. 19:45 What does the Bible say? Well, we know even in the book 19:47 of Proverbs 23 talks about do not look at mixed drinks. 19:51 Wine is mixed. And we talk about this cup. 19:53 And we understand the Word of God - even in the book 19:56 of Revelation chapter 14 verse 8... 7 and 8... 20:00 there's a church, there's a woman that's holding a cup. 20:03 That's right. Had a cup full of wine. 20:06 Roll over to chapter 16, chapter 17, 20:08 it talks about this cup is full of abomination. 20:11 Um-hmm. And so there's a mixture. 20:13 And we find that even in the Garden of Eden 20:16 Satan gave almost 90% truth and another 10% error. 20:22 It's a mixture. So here we have confusion. 20:24 So how do we draw the conclusion then? 20:27 God is not a God of confusion. 20:29 He's not the author of confusion. 20:31 In the book of James it tells us that how can a fountain give 20:33 both sweet and bitter. 20:35 So either God is true or He's a liar. God said wine is a mocker. 20:39 Coffee is a stimulant... therefore it's addictive. 20:43 In Proverbs chapter 23 verse 35 it says: "They have 20:47 stricken me. Shall they say 'And I was not sick? 20:50 They have beaten me and yet I felt it not. 20:53 When should I wake I will seek it again'. " And again. 20:56 And so we find then that confusion. 20:59 Just like in the physical world there's confusion within... 21:02 among churches today because there's a mixture 21:05 of truth and error. Wow! Wow! 21:07 Now what was the text you just gave? 21:09 This here? In Proverbs chapter 23 and verse 35. 21:12 Proverbs chapter 23 and verse 35. 21:16 All the texts that we give you, especially in this program, 21:19 you want to go and you want to look them up yourself 21:21 and allow the Spirit of God to show you exactly 21:26 what you need to do and have a clear understanding 21:28 of these things. So... now... 21:31 I like where you went. You talked about Adam and Eve 21:33 in the garden - that's right - that it was a mixture. 21:36 But God told Eve not to go! Um-hmm. 21:40 I love this. In the few moments we have left 21:43 let's talk about this and then let's get back to this 21:45 wine thing. Um-hmm. So God said 21:48 "of all the trees in the garden you may freely eat, " 21:52 right? So of course they understood that they weren't 21:56 supposed to eat and become gluttons. 21:57 But they had access to all the trees. All the trees. 22:01 But then one specific tree He said: "You may not eat of 22:04 that tree, for in the day that you do you shall surely die. " 22:08 Now what was it about that tree in the garden? 22:11 It had... It was the tree of the knowledge of 22:16 good and evil. 22:20 So there was a mixture that made it... 22:24 Was the fruit evil of that tree? No! 22:27 Was the tree evil? No! 22:28 Perhaps it was who was at the tree - umm! - 22:32 who knew good and evil. Who knew good and evil. 22:35 Let's talk about that for a few moments 22:37 in the time we have left. 22:39 Well, yeah... There's a very good point in bringing that up. 22:43 The tree itself or the fruit itself was not what's bad... 22:46 was not what condemned Eve to die - um-hmm - 22:49 or to death... the process of death. 22:52 It was the fact that Satan, who was once the cherub 22:56 in the presence of God overlooking the most holy place 23:00 where God dwells, knew the goodness of God. 23:04 And then iniquity was found in him. 23:07 Now he had knowledge of both good and evil 23:11 and he used it just like he uses it now for all of us. 23:15 He gives you truth with just sprinkled... 23:18 Like these? Like this... exactly! 23:20 The premise is... If there is, for example, arsenic: 23:24 if you put a drop in a glass of water... 23:27 How much of a drop? Hah... just a drop. 23:29 One drop. One drop... in how much water? 23:31 In a cup of water. A cup of water. 23:33 In a cup of water. Arsenic is odorless; 23:36 it's tasteless; it's colorless. 23:39 You can't tell that it's in the water. However, 23:41 it will kill you. Wow! It WILL kill you. 23:44 Mixture of truth and error. 23:47 Satan himself, Garden of Eden. Matthew 4 in the wilderness 23:52 of temptation Satan quoted scripture. 23:54 Psalm 91. Um-hmm. Left out part of the scripture. 23:58 So it's always a mixture of truth and error. 24:00 In the book of II Thessalonians chapter 2 24:03 it talks about when we don't have a love for the truth 24:07 we will believe a lie. 24:08 We find that people are confused. To know the truth 24:12 will prevent us from accepting a lie. 24:14 To know the truth about temperance and wine 24:18 will set us free. Otherwise, we will set ourselves up believing 24:22 that a little wine is good for the heart. 24:25 Or a little wine "never hurt nobody" 24:28 as we heard at the beginning. That's right. But 24:30 a little arsenic can kill you. So this mixing, this mixer 24:35 is the problem. Is the problem. The confusion... 24:38 the confusion. You've heard the confusion. 24:41 We've tried to just stick with what the Word of God says. 24:44 And I think that you have seen from what we have shown 24:47 that it is a clear, clear mandate from the Word of God 24:51 that we are to take the wine not when it's fermented but 24:56 from the cluster. That's when it's good! 24:59 So we don't want to mix truth and error. 25:01 We just want the truth. You've heard it here today. 25:03 We look forward to seeing you on another program. 25:08 The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 25:11 "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood 25:14 but against principalities, against powers, 25:16 against the rulers of darkness of this world, 25:19 against spiritual wickedness in high places. " 25:22 There is a concerted effort to capture the youth 25:26 and begin to take them down a path of destruction 25:30 so that when they're adults 25:32 their behaviors destroy the entire family. 25:36 I know this personally since I saw it growing up 25:40 as it happened to my father and the impact almost destroyed 25:44 our family. But the Lord promised 25:46 in Psalm 103 verse 3 and 4 25:49 that He'll forgive us, heal our diseases, 25:53 and redeem us from destruction. 25:56 We learned today that drinking - even socially - 25:59 could lead to addiction, sickness, and disease. 26:04 You know, Rico, you and your guests have made a 26:08 compelling argument against social drinking. 26:11 Like King Agrippa, you almost persuade me to stop. 26:15 Wow, really? NOT! It went in one blue ear 26:18 and out the other just like all these viewers. 26:21 Because you know why? They want to enjoy life. 26:23 They want to have fun. They want to enjoy a little buzz 26:26 because it makes life better. And so what if there's lifestyle 26:30 diseases and liver problems and other things along the way. 26:34 The idea is living for the moment. 26:36 You know, if you control the moment you control the mind. 26:40 And if you control the mind you control everything. 26:43 Hmmm. Well listen, friends, 26:47 we are truly in a battle for the minds of our children, 26:50 the health of our bodies, and the peace and happiness 26:53 of our families. Remember that we don't wrestle with 26:58 a liquid or a TV ad or even the people who produce them. 27:03 And this bears repeating; 27:04 "We wrestle not against flesh and blood 27:07 but against principalities, against powers, 27:10 against the rulers of the darkness of this world, 27:12 against spiritual wickedness in high places. " 27:16 But we have a Savior, and He has promised to redeem us 27:20 from the hand of the enemy. I'm a redeemed witness 27:24 and I'm saying so. "Beloved, 27:28 I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper 27:30 and be in health. " I'm Rico Hill; 27:33 I'm Sickness. Maranatha. |
