00:01 Hi there!
00:03 I'm grandma Neil. 00:04 The program you are about to see shows a typical day for 00:05 the children in my neighborhood who visit me at 00:08 grandma's house in Chehalis Washington. 00:10 These children are not actors they are just being 00:13 themselves as I let you peek inside our doors. 00:16 What a joy it is to see them learn of 00:19 Jesus for the very first time. 00:20 Come on outside now and enjoy 00:22 a little visit at grandma's house. 00:42 Hi kids! I'm glad you came downtown to meet us today. 00:46 Isn't this a glorious afternoon? 00:47 This is my granddaughter Kate and we came down here to 00:51 buy some of the freshest vegetables around. 00:53 Then we're going home and fix them for lunch. 00:55 Come on let's see what they've got. 00:57 Why don't we check here! 01:01 Purple potatoes - should we cook some of those up? 01:54 Looks like a spaceship. 02:11 I like raspberries. 02:26 I want to get one tiny cucumber. 02:39 Alright let's go home and cook the stuff. 02:50 Were back in my kitchen after our shopping day. 02:53 You might notice the kids aren't with me now. 02:55 And there's a reason for that, I shooed them outside 02:59 to play with grandpa for a while. 03:00 Because I want to try an experiment. 03:03 Do you remember at the market today when 03:05 we were looking at potatoes? 03:07 We saw some that were kind of purple on the outside, and 03:11 there were others that were red, white and I even saw 03:14 some yellow finish potatoes there. 03:16 Now most of those when you cut them open are white on 03:19 the inside, but let me show you the middle of this one. 03:21 Where's my knife here, this is fascinating. 03:29 Look at the inside of this! 03:31 It's purple, and you know what the cool thing about this is? 03:35 When you cook it up it's purple too. 03:39 And you know sometimes people have a little trouble with 03:42 things that don't look exactly as you 03:44 think they ought to look. 03:46 Sometimes it's called prejudice, and other times maybe 03:50 we don't treat other kids as nicely as we ought to. 03:54 Maybe they don't look quite like we think they ought to 03:57 look, but today I thought maybe if I snuck that in on 04:01 them, and they didn't know what to expect for lunch, 04:03 I would just like to see what happens when they get a 04:07 purple potato for lunch! 04:09 So you won't tell them will you? 04:11 Don't let on that you know the secret that they don't. 04:15 So when they come in we'll find out what they think 04:18 about purple potatoes. 04:19 Right now I'm going to finish getting the vegetables 04:22 ready that we bought for lunch. 04:49 Oh this all looks pretty good, don't you think? 04:52 All this good bread and good vegetables. 04:54 I think the kids out of be pretty hungry, of course one 04:57 thing they don't know is about the special for supper. 05:00 But I think it's about ready now, I didn't tell, 05:03 I hope you didn't either. 05:04 Grandpa, bring the kids in time for supper. 05:08 Come on in and - this is going to be fun don't you think? 05:12 Hi guys, you hungry? 05:14 Yeah! yeah! - good find a place around the table. 05:17 This is for you, alright. 05:21 Okay who wants to say grace? 05:24 Who wants to say the blessing? 05:25 Any volunteers alright, Kate you can. 05:27 Dear Jesus thank you for today, thank you that we can 05:31 all be here, thank you for our food, Amen! 05:34 Well I hope you like all your nice fresh vegetables. 05:39 But I do have a surprise for supper. 05:42 I've worked harder on this dish all day and it's a 05:45 wonderful entrée are you ready. 05:46 Go ahead you can start, I'll be back in just a minute. 05:59 Oh Look! 06:56 I am surprised you tried them. 06:57 Well you are just not going to. 06:59 You know what, we did cook a couple other kinds of potatoes. 07:04 Are they good, yeah! 07:09 I think they are really good, but if you didn't want those 07:13 kind I made some of those others over here. 07:16 Do you want to see something else fun guys? 07:47 Could you guys think of any other purple food? 07:52 Plums - grapes - onions. 08:00 Huh well why we are naming all these good kinds of food do 08:03 you think you guys might have a time to jot down my address? 08:06 I'd love for you write to me, you know I'd love it. 08:08 So if you have got your paper and pencil ready, 08:10 well here's my address. 08:14 Hey kids grandma Neil would like to hear from you. 08:17 She loves to get pictures, drawings and anything else 08:19 you may want to send her. 08:21 She also answers each one of your letters so get your 08:23 pen ready and write down her address. 08:58 Everything is quiet again and it is time for just you and me. 09:03 Time for a heart to heart talk. 09:05 You know sometimes it is not so easy to get past the way 09:08 something looks, to see the real goodness inside. 09:11 It could be like eating blue potatoes, actually they 09:15 looked kind of purple didn't they? 09:17 Do you ever feel like blue potato? 09:19 Do you think that people turn up their noses at you 09:22 because they can see past you're outside? 09:24 Oh honey I feel that way too sometimes. 09:27 I know that especially when we are young being different 09:31 can make you wonder if you are lovable. 09:33 What makes a person lovable anyway? 09:36 Do you ever wonder why some kids are part of the in 09:39 crowd and they seem to have trillions of friends, 09:41 and others only have a few? 09:43 If somebody is popular does that mean they are more lovable? 09:48 Look of this old picture of my grandma and grandpa Miner. 09:52 Do they look like lovable people to you? 09:55 They are both old, they don't look terribly happy. 09:58 Grandma is fat and grandpa can't hear or see. 10:01 Hmmm, but here in one of my magazines, let me find it. 10:07 Here it is, this will give us a clue. 10:11 The eye of the beholder. 10:16 When grandpa looks at grandma somehow he doesn't see her 10:21 wrinkled brow, her hair is white now, in her aged serenity. 10:26 He doesn't see her falter when night its darkness brings, 10:31 that she is slow he'll never know, or any of those things. 10:36 When grandpa looks at grandma somehow he doesn't hear 10:41 the broken tones that she now owns, 10:44 her voice seems firm and clear. 10:47 Her eyes and smile upon him are faded blue and dim. 10:51 Though time has changed, they have not changed, 10:55 they look the same to him. 10:57 When grandpa looks at grandma, forgetting that she is old 11:01 he sees his bride cling to his side with hair of shining gold. 11:06 He seems to her in splendor, love just grows and grows. 11:12 If she is gray and bent today, grandfather never knows. 11:17 Hmmm, now let me show you the pictures of our wedding day. 11:22 These were taken over 20 years ago. 11:25 I sure don't look the same and grandpa 11:28 has changed a little bit too. 11:30 I used to worry that if my out side changed, or I wasn't 11:35 as pretty as I used to be, I worried that no one 11:37 would love me. 11:39 But I found out that grandpa does, his love has stayed 11:42 strong and has never wavered no matter what happened. 11:45 He reminds me of God. 11:48 No matter what we look like on the outside He loves us 11:51 because He sees what is in our hearts. 11:54 Have you figured out what makes a person lovable yet? 11:58 Being lovable is not the same as being popular. 12:01 Lovability is what you are, and popularity is 12:05 something you might have. 12:07 God made you, and He made you lovable, and nobody can 12:11 take that away from you. 12:12 Popularity is something other people may give you 12:16 for a while, but they can take it away too. 12:19 There is nothing you can do to make God love you less, 12:23 and nothing you can do to make Him love you more. 12:27 Even if you do wrong things you are still lovable, 12:31 isn't that good to know? 12:33 He made you lovable and that is it! 12:35 There is nothing you can do to make me 12:38 love you less either, when I look at you 12:40 I see the most precious faces in all the world. 12:44 I see stars shining in your eyes and big important 12:47 dreams in your heart. 12:49 Keep these thoughts close to you tonight as you go to sleep. 12:52 and until next time know that you are deeply 12:56 loved and nothing will ever change that. 12:59 The purple potatoes I like them very much because 13:04 they are my favorite color. 13:05 Purple mashed potatoes aren't right. 13:09 She showed us some before she picked them and 13:12 they were purple in the middle. 13:14 You say potato and I say tomato, no! no! no! no! 13:20 it doesn't go like that. 13:22 Why would you think that? 13:25 I say potatoes, you say Potatoes. 13:29 I wonder what French fries would look like if they were purple? 13:33 What's a Patato? 13:36 Well at first I thought they looked gross but then 13:40 I tried some they were Ummm! 13:42 I see grandpa it those potatoes and that was funny. 13:46 I wonder if green beans could be purple? 13:50 Wouldn't it be called purple beans? 13:54 Yuck! That would be gross! |
