00:01 Hi there, I'm Grandma Neal.
00:03 The program you're about to see shows 00:05 a typical day for the children in 00:07 my neighborhood, who visit me at 00:08 Grandma's House in Chehalis, Washington. 00:11 These children are not actors, they're just being 00:14 themselves as I let you peek inside our doors. 00:17 What a joy it is to see them learn 00:19 of Jesus for the very first time. 00:21 Come on inside and enjoy a little visit at Grandma's House! 00:26 THEME MUSIC 00:34 SPLASH! 00:37 BOY GIGGLES 00:39 This is Grandma's House! 00:43 Hi there, kids! 00:45 Come on in, we're cookin' today, cookin' bread. 00:48 I have my favorite recipe book here, this is an 00:52 old time book, look how marked up the pages are. 00:56 You can tell that's my favorite recipe. 00:59 The Bible's a lot like that, too. 01:02 You can tell in my Bible which verses I love the best, because 01:07 those pages are a little more wrinkled and marked up, too. 01:10 The Bible tells us how to live our lives, and 01:14 this recipe book tells us how to make bread, right? 01:18 Today we thought it might be fun to see what happens if 01:22 you throw the recipe book away, and don't follow the rules. 01:26 We're gonna make some bread, right Caite? 01:30 I'm gonna show you all the ingredients I use 01:34 in bread, but I'm not gonna tell you how much 01:37 You get to make your own loaf of bread. 01:40 Won't this be fun? 01:41 Flour, of course. I use some white flour, rye 01:47 flour, whole wheat flour, and I use some oat flour. 01:52 I love to mix them together, because 01:55 what's not in one grain is in another. 01:57 Then I like to put in a little bit of flax seed. 02:01 We have some soy milk, some cooking oil, salt, and yeast. 02:07 I think that's plenty, don't you? 02:11 What we do is we close the book, and now 02:13 we're gonna have fun makin' bread, ok? 02:16 Here we go, Catie. 02:18 Are we gonna start with flour? 02:20 Caite: Uh-huh. 02:22 Grandma: Dump it in 02:23 - there, we're gonna be wild and crazy. 02:26 Some of this and some of that. 02:28 Should I start stirring? 02:30 Caite: You don't need to stir yet. 02:35 FAST MUSIC 03:34 LAUGHTER AND GIGGLES 03:53 MUSIC CONTINUES 04:10 ARGHHH! 04:12 SLAM! 04:15 SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! 04:18 SLAM! 04:29 BEEP! 04:32 Well, Caite's bread is in the oven, and we're certainly 04:35 going to have a surprise with this one, aren't we? 04:38 Wonderful bread, Caite. 04:39 While her bread is cookin' I'd like to 04:42 show you a treat my mom used to make for me. 04:45 It's called a Voctandana! 04:47 This is some bread I already cooked earlier, 04:50 and I'm gonna show you how this works. 04:52 It's very tricky. 04:54 You have a loaf of fresh bread 04:58 We wrap a towel around it, like this 05:03 Then you hold it like this. 05:08 Now the trick is to get a really thin slice of bread 05:12 - so thin you can almost see through it. 05:15 But, you don't want it to fall in half, so you 05:18 have to get a good balance, but make it really thin. 05:22 First I'm going to cut the heel off. 05:25 That doesn't count. 05:28 Now we have a good place to start from, 05:31 and now we put butter on it. 05:33 You wanna do that Caite? Put butter on the loaf? 05:40 After she gets that all on 05:43 there my job is to 05:45 cut the end of the loaf, and see how thin a slice I get. 05:51 Ummm! I can smell her bread now. 05:54 If we don't follow the recipe, we just 05:56 don't know what we're gonna get, do we? 05:59 Life is like that, too, huh? 06:01 If you don't follow the recipe for life you 06:03 could end up with somethin' you didn't plan on! 06:05 Ok, are you ready for this? 06:07 When it comes off, get ready to catch it, ok? 06:10 Caite: With butter on it? Grandma: Sure. 06:13 Ok, I'm gonna do the very best I can. 06:15 This is the challenge. 06:17 Oh my, I've got to be very careful. 06:19 Grandma: Oooo, look at it - oh! 06:25 Now move your hand down a bit. 06:29 There you go, now flip it over! 06:31 Taste it, and see how good it is. 06:35 Oh, this was so much fun when I was a girl. 06:37 You know, I smell bread again 06:39 - do you think we ought to check on it? 06:41 Caite: If you want to. 06:43 Grandma: I think I should, because I see 06:46 some funny colored steam coming out of the oven! 06:48 I think we should go look, don't you? 06:50 Let's check on it. 06:53 Stand back a bit. 06:56 Is it good? What do you think? 06:58 Not bad, huh? That's a great treat. 07:01 Now lets see how her bread is coming along. 07:04 Come on over here and take a look. 07:10 Grandma: Woah! 07:14 Oh, it's cookin'. 07:17 Shall we pull it out and take a look? 07:22 Caite: Looks done to me. 07:24 Grandma: Well, the flour looks done, but 07:26 it's not quite done, it's a little too soft. 07:29 Grandma: Shall we put it back in some more? 07:33 Caite: First let's take some of the flour off. 07:35 How would we do that? 07:43 Caite: The vacuum? Grandma: The vacuum? 07:46 GRANDMA LAUGHS 07:48 Grandma: Why not? Let's get the vacuum! 07:51 VACUUM CLEANER SOUND 08:02 Oh, you should see this! 08:08 Grandma: Oh my! Caite: It's FUN! 08:11 There are more ways then one to skin a cat! 08:16 Grandma: Ok, are we ready to put it on the counter? 08:22 There we go. 08:28 Ok, what do you think of our bread? 08:31 It looks pretty interesting, don'tcha think? 08:34 Kind of ugly? 08:35 Let's take it out of the pan, and see if we can slice the 08:39 bread. Ready to try it? Caite: 08:42 Yeah. Oh my! 08:44 Ok, back over 08:47 Caite: Can I cut it? 08:49 Grandma: Alright, cut a slice 08:57 Grandma: It's very soft bread, I'll have to say that. 09:00 You want to try it? 09:04 Caite: You try it! 09:05 Grandma: Oh, YOU try it! 09:06 GRANDMA LAUGHS 09:12 Is it good? 09:14 See what happens when you don't follow the recipe. 09:18 Can I have a little taste? 09:20 Caite: Sure! 09:25 Well, I have to say it's quite interesting, I'll say that. 09:31 This is interesting bread. 09:35 Thank you, Caite! 09:36 While Caite's cutting up the bread, 09:39 I'd be glad to give you my address. 09:42 I'd love to hear from you, and you know I do! 09:44 So if you've got a pencil and paper ready, here it is. 09:47 Write it down! 09:48 Announcer: Hey kids, Grandma Neal would love to hear from 09:51 you. She loves to get pictures, drawings, and 09:53 anything else you may want to send to her. 09:55 She also answers each one of your letters, so 09:57 get your pen ready and write down our address, ok? 10:01 If you want to write her a letter, address it to... 10:18 Grandma also loves to get emails at... 10:29 She'd love to hear from you! 10:32 Whew, the kitchen's finally clean and shiny again. 10:37 I love havin' kids bake with me, 10:40 and then getting to eat what we've made. 10:42 What things do you like to cook? 10:45 Do you make the same kind of bread that we made today? 10:47 When I was young, my mom made bread every week 10:51 And sometimes she made cinnamon rolls for special treats. 10:54 When they were still warm, I loved to grab 10:57 one and share it with my best friend next door. 11:00 I wonder, did you notice my cookbook today? 11:03 I've used it often, and it looks like it. 11:06 The pages of my favorite recipes have the most stains on them. 11:09 Some of the pages are coming loose, 11:12 and I've made lots of notes to myself. 11:15 You need a good cookbook to learn how to make great food. 11:18 It takes time before you know just which ingredients 11:22 taste good blended together. 11:24 When you're learning you need 11:25 a book to teach you how to 11:27 stir, mix and bake. 11:29 You know how hot to cook it, and you need to know for how long! 11:34 My old recipe book has taught me 11:36 many things about making good bread. 11:40 I was thinking today how much life is like making bread. 11:43 If you wanna make good bread, you have to put in good stuff 11:47 Well, if you want a happy life, you have to be 11:51 just as careful to put in only good things, too. 11:54 That's why I have this book in my library. 11:58 I use it every day. 11:59 It's very much like a recipe book for life. 12:03 It's called The Bible. 12:06 Let's say somebody doesn't have any friends. 12:09 What do you think you should do? 12:10 Well, look at Proverbs 18:24. 12:16 It says, if you want friends, you must be friendly. 12:20 And it promises that there are friends out 12:23 there who will stick closer than a brother. 12:25 Back here it says that a friend loves at all times. 12:30 That means that if somebody's nice only 12:33 some of the time, they're not a true friend. 12:37 Over here in Proverbs 27:6 it says, "Faithful are the 12:42 wounds of a friend, but the 12:44 kisses of an enemy are deceitful. " 12:47 What does that mean? 12:49 Hmmmm. 12:51 I could tell you what I think, but I would much 12:53 rather have you think about it and decide for yourself. 12:57 A good way to do this is by asking God what He meant. 13:00 After all, the Bible is God's word. 13:04 You could also ask someone else who loves 13:06 the Bible to tell you what they think. 13:07 But if you do, make sure to ask several "somebody else's. " 13:12 Don't take just one person's thoughts as your own. 13:16 Do lots of research before you make up your mind. 13:19 Another good way to understand the Bible is to 13:22 just start reading it a little bit every day. 13:26 Always ask God first to help you understand it. 13:30 Will you do that? 13:31 And when you think you know what this 13:32 verse means, would you write and tell me? 13:34 I can't wait to read what you have to say about Proverbs 27:6. 13:40 Aww, look at the time again 13:42 - I have enjoyed your visit, but it's always over too soon. 13:46 I love being able to talk to you like an adult. 13:50 You are so smart and able to figure out hard things. 13:54 It's just plain fun to be with you. 13:57 Till next time, remember that you 13:59 make my heart happy, and I love you! 14:07 My bread, it turned out squishy! 14:11 I didn't really like it. 14:13 But my friends at school don't know 14:16 that, because I'm giving them some! 14:18 I think I added a little too much oil and honey and sugar 14:25 It just tasted kinda sweet 14:27 It's just a little too - weird! |
