00:01 This is cool.
00:06 Let's get this all centered. 00:10 Let's get this all packed in here. 00:18 There's Harry Truman! 00:20 Heh Josh, you should go get grandma Neil. 00:42 Hi Josh, where are you taking me? - it's a surprise. 00:46 A surprise, what have you guys been doing? 00:49 Is this what you've been doing? - Explosion! 00:52 It's going to explode? 00:55 I think so, you guys have been gone too long 00:57 and I'm nervous. 00:59 Are you ready for this grandma Neil- no! I'm not! 01:04 Let her rip. The kids don't know that I really know 01:07 what is going on out here, I've kept an eye on them. 01:10 But I'm going along with the game, this is going 01:13 to be fun, okay! 01:19 Whoa, the ground is all rumbling. 01:25 That ain't nothing yet, we still have a grand finale. 01:28 I'm going to go back behind the tree. 01:31 That might be a good idea, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. 01:41 Ha, ha, ha, ha! Way to go! oh that is fantastic! 01:47 I love it, oh that was a magnificent explosion. 01:50 Do you think it's safe to come out now? - probably! 01:54 Probably, let's go check it out. Come on! 01:55 Heh guys where's the rest of you? Damien come on let's look 02:01 at this, you guys did such a good job. 02:04 I love it, look it is still smoldering. 02:06 And there's Harry Truman down there and he is all covered 02:09 up too, this was so realistic that it makes me want to go 02:13 up to the mountain again. 02:14 Have you been up there recently? - no! 02:16 We ought to go don't you think? - yes! 02:19 This is an inspiration, well let's go, let's head up there 02:21 this is wishy-washy and could be dangerous. 02:26 We have just come out of a movie watching the actual 02:30 eruptions of Mount St.Helens, we're at the visitor center. 02:33 I wonder if you would like to see what a real volcano 02:36 really looks like? Close up and personal. 02:39 So come on outside, I've got something to show you. 02:43 Well there it is kids, what do you think? 02:46 That is Mount St. Helens and we are up close and personal. 02:50 In fact if we have been standing here 27 years ago 02:53 we would have been blown off that way. 02:55 Well what happened was the beautiful cone that was on top 02:59 of there, this side blew out first, and then that whole 03:03 cone just collapsed right down into this valley. 03:07 I hope that you can see down there, and see all the ash 03:10 and stuff that has filled up the whole valley. 03:12 Covered over Spirit Lake. 03:14 Were you living here when it happened? - I was. 03:17 I was living out of sight of Tacoma, I remember that 03:20 morning as I was driving to church and I heard it on 03:25 the radio and I looked up across Puget Sound and then 03:29 I could see just massive clouds of dark, dark ash and 03:33 smoke coming up, it was just an awesome thing. 03:36 It just seemed like its filled the whole sky. 03:38 You know it was really exciting because we knew it was 03:41 going to erupt, but we kept thinking it was going to any 03:44 time and my kids were little then. 03:46 We used to come up the Toutle river and we would go up, 03:50 there was a place on this mountain side were people would 03:54 come and wait for it to erupt. 03:56 Then it was only erupting steam and ash a little bit. 04:00 So was like a picnic atmosphere up there. 04:03 it was really a silly thing to do, but we didn't realize 04:06 what was going to happen and when it blew, it really blew. 04:10 I'm so grateful we weren't up there that day. 04:13 There's some wildlife up here, there is a chipmunk. 04:16 You see a chipmunk down there? - down on the side. 04:18 The plants and animals are starting to come back in some 04:22 areas more than others. 04:23 But the whole chain of the Cascades Mountains is all 04:27 volcanic activity, very exciting, very fun and some 04:31 really ragged mountains you see. 04:33 You see a lot of those just where the explosions have 04:36 happened, an blown away the rock. 04:38 But there is so much more to see and do up here. 04:40 This log was one that was blown down when the mountain 04:44 erupted, you can see it is pointing straight into the 04:47 mountain and straight out, got blown completely over. 04:50 Look at here guys it didn't even break off neatly, it's 04:53 kind of twisted and bent off. 04:55 Doesn't look like they cut it with a saw. 04:58 No they sure didn't. It just blasted it over. 05:01 Yeah there is some lichens and stuff growing in here now. 05:04 That's the strength of the volcano was to take trees this 05:07 size and smashed them clear over. 05:11 Want you guys to notice this ridge across the valley here. 05:14 That is Coldwater Ridge. 05:16 Up in the very top there is an observatory, but if you 05:18 look you can see where the trees have been flattened by 05:22 the blast and those kind of behind the ridge are still 05:24 standing upright where the talks have blown off too. 05:27 It's an awesome sight up here isn't it guys? 05:36 This beautiful little area is called Coldwater Lake. 05:39 Believe me that water is cold. 05:43 You can check out the boys legs, they're turning blue. 05:46 It is cold isn't it Rory? - yeah. 05:48 This little lake wasn't here before the eruption. 05:51 It formed after the eruption and the bottom of the valley 05:55 got damned up with all the mud and silk, then the rain 05:58 water started to gather here and made 06:00 this beautiful little Lake. 06:01 Before the mountain erupted there was another lake called 06:05 Spirit Lake just over the way a piece. 06:08 It was a beautiful resort area, that is where Harry Truman 06:11 lived, and I will tell you more about Harry Truman later. 06:14 But it was just beautiful, heavily forested and a beautiful 06:18 little Lodge there, then when the mountain blew, the whole 06:22 side of the mountain went down into the valley and 06:25 covered that all up. 06:26 There is a tiny bit of Spirit Lake left, but it is all 06:30 full of Long's that looked like toothpicks all shoved to 06:32 the end of the pond. 06:34 The waves, when the eruption happened the waves that went 06:39 up the side of that valley were 800 feet high. 06:42 That is just unimaginable, that would have been something 06:46 to see that wall of water coming at you. 06:48 But it created another beautiful little spot and 06:52 I am glad we are here to enjoy this one. 06:55 There are some more spots around the lake I would like 06:58 to show you, do you want to come? 07:00 Come on Rory lets go, let's take a look around 07:02 the lake a bit. 07:04 See right up and there you can see the volcano, look! 07:06 Yeah. - just right up there on the other side of the 07:09 ridge - it's starting to steam more than when we saw it. 07:11 Ya! - Ah look, isn't that pretty? 07:29 Oh what a great day this has been. 07:31 Did you guys have fun? - yeah we had a blast. 07:34 Oh good, yeah I do know what you mean. 07:36 Well it is time for us to head for home, but it has 07:40 been a wonderful day. 07:41 Thank you guys so much for coming with me. - thank you! 07:45 Ah, give me a hug. Head for the van. 07:48 All right, for you guys at home I'm not going anywhere. 07:52 You could just take this time now to write down my address, 07:55 get a paper and pencil and I will be right back. 08:01 Hey kids Graham Joyce would love to hear from you. 08:04 So why not sit down and write her a letter? 08:06 Like every grandma she loves to get pictures, 08:09 drawings or anything else you send her. 08:12 Just write to: 08:24 So what are you waiting for? Write her today. 08:31 Now I want to tell you the story about a man named 08:33 Harry Truman. Remember him from earlier in the program? 08:37 He's the guy who lived right up close to Mount Saint 08:40 Helens at Spirit Lake just before the mountain erupted. 08:43 Harry lived in a lodge there and took care of the place 08:47 even though he was 83 years old. 08:49 He was kind of stoved up, but in spite of all of that, 08:53 he was what some people might call a bit of a crusty 08:57 old codger, that meant he still had some pretty strong 09:01 opinions of his own and he did not mind sharing 09:04 them with everybody around. 09:06 He had a beard of short stubbly whiskers that made you 09:09 just want to itch to look at them. 09:11 The words he used weren't always very polite. 09:14 People today would say he wasn't politically correct. 09:18 Well here is his picture, what do you think? 09:22 Anyhow when the earthquakes around the mountain began 09:25 and people started thinking maybe it was going to start 09:28 erupting again, reporters would go up to the area every 09:31 few days to show on TV what was happening. 09:35 Sometimes they would stop and talk to Harry at the lodge. 09:38 They would have a bit of lunch with him and he would tell 09:42 them that all this fuss over a dormant volcano was just 09:45 plain silly and a waste of time. 09:48 Well the signs of the coming eruption were happening 09:51 oftener every day, with the earthquakes getting stronger 09:54 and sometimes little plumes of steam or ash would puff 09:59 out, but Harry said, everybody was over exaggerating and 10:02 he would pay no attention to the warnings for people 10:05 to get ready to evacuate. 10:07 One day the sheriff and his deputies came to the little 10:10 valley and told everyone it was time to go. 10:13 It was just too dangerous for them to stay where they 10:16 were, and though the people were not happy about leaving 10:19 their homes behind, all of them left except Harry. 10:23 Harry refused to believe the mountain would hurt him. 10:28 The sheriff tried one last time to warn him and beg 10:32 him to get out of the way. 10:34 But Harry just snorted, if the mountain goes I go with it. 10:38 It ain't going to hurt me boy. 10:41 He showed the sheriff the door. 10:44 Later that evening Harry fed the 16 calves he owned, and 10:49 he turned into bed for a night of quiet slumber. 10:52 Everything was peaceful as he slept, but early the next 10:56 morning before he was even out of bed an earthquake 11:00 rumbled, the mountain exploded and tons of rock and earth slid 11:05 down the mountain side and it raced across Spirit Lake 11:08 and slammed right into the lodge where Harry lived. 11:12 The water and the debris made a wall that went some 11:15 800 feet deep up the sides of the hills around his 11:19 home and it buried the lodge under 150 feet of 11:24 ashes and mud, and that is a fact. 11:26 Now here's the thing, I didn't tell you the story to 11:30 make you sad, but to help you think. 11:31 Lots of you who watch this little program are going to 11:34 be be-bopping down the road and don't even know about 11:37 another earth shattering event that is just around the 11:40 corner for all of us. 11:41 I'm scared for you because I love you, and I know that 11:44 while some kids are blessed to know about Jesus and the 11:48 Bible, lots of other folks haven't been as lucky. 11:51 So it is them that I especially want to hear me now. 11:55 Jesus is coming very soon and that is fantastic news for 11:59 everybody who loves Him. 12:01 But if you don't know Him and why He is coming back, 12:04 you might be tempted to brush the idea aside and not 12:07 pay any attention. 12:09 You might think people have been saying that for 12:12 a long time now, and think that it is just not real. 12:15 Kind of like what Harry Truman thought about his mountain 12:19 Volcano, Oh if you have never heard about Jesus I want 12:22 to reach right through this screen and put my arms 12:25 around you, and draw you really close and tell 12:28 you everything I know about Him. 12:30 I want to tell you everything all at once so you will 12:32 love Him too, but this program is just too short to do that. 12:36 But here's the most important thing. 12:39 Jesus is God and He loves you. 12:42 Jesus created you with His very own two hands and gave 12:47 you a life that He met for you to keep forever. 12:49 Our arch enemy tricked us into sin which means that now 12:53 we can't live forever. 12:54 People get old and sick and then they die. 12:57 You know that don't you? 12:59 But Jesus has a way to give you back your forever life 13:03 if you will follow Him and the instructions He gives. 13:06 In the Bible the friends of Jesus wrote down what He said. 13:09 Some of it was for how we can tell when He was ready to 13:13 come and take us to heaven. 13:14 He told the signs to watch for and He said they would 13:18 get bigger and stronger and closer together the nearer 13:21 we got to His return. 13:23 Those very signs are happening today, earthquakes, 13:27 tsunamis, tornadoes, wars everywhere and they are 13:31 getting stronger and closer together every single day. 13:35 And now for the very best part, this means that Jesus 13:39 is waiting for you just around the corner. 13:42 He is waiting because He loves you so much He just can't 13:46 bear to think you may not be ready yet. 13:48 He is giving you a little more time to decide. 13:51 Please decide, be saved today. 13:54 Bye, and until the next time, I love you. 13:59 When Mount St. Helens blew it sounded like this. 14:02 (gun shot sound) 14:09 Boys and girls, don't try this at home. 14:13 Okay this experiment proved rather successful as you can 14:16 see there is no more volcano left. 14:18 Kids do not try this at home. 14:22 (Bang sound) I think I'll plug my ears. 14:27 (bang sound) |
