00:01 Heh guys, today I thought it would be fun to take an old
00:03 time train ride, it's an old steam engine.
00:06 I think it was built in 1929, is that right?
00:10 I got to get up here with the engineer, boy am I having
00:13 a blast, come on we're going for a ride.
00:17 What do you think Ricky? Yeah!
00:19 All aboard, come on.
00:41 Hi everybody, before we go on our great train adventure
00:45 I would like to tell you a little story of what
00:47 happened behind the scenes.
00:49 When we shot this episode of Grandma's House,
00:52 I took a bunch of enthusiastic kids on an
00:54 old-time steam train ride.
00:56 It was a warm summers afternoon up in
00:59 the hills around Mount Rainier.
01:01 In case you've never heard of Mount Rainier before,
01:03 it is just one of many volcanic mountains
01:06 near where I live.
01:07 Up in the northwestern corner of the United States.
01:10 Anyway the kids and I were all excited about this
01:13 excursion, it was just an absolutely perfect day,
01:17 the perfect chance to get away from the ordinary
01:20 humdrum of summer and have a really good time together.
01:24 We had to drive about an hour away from home to get up
01:28 to the train station.
01:29 So we loaded up in the old van and off we went.
01:31 We drove up and down and over narrow curvy roads,
01:35 Past the little town of Morton and down a dusty side road
01:39 to a tiny old logging community.
01:42 In the old days they used the train to bring the logs out
01:45 of the forest and get them to the mills in town.
01:47 Fortunately the guys from 3ABN were in the area and they
01:51 planned to meet us at the station to film our ride.
01:55 So you can take a peek and see some of what happened too.
01:59 Here is what the camera saw.
02:04 Good morning welcome to the steam train and
02:06 we're going to have a blast, got perfect weather,
02:09 we got all our kids and I can't wait to get on board
02:12 and see what is along the tracks.
02:14 Come on, all aboard.
02:44 Wouldn't it have been fun to ride in the old trains
02:45 like that? - oh yeah. - Whew!
02:47 Oh isn't this pretty up the tracks, look right into the
02:51 trees. Ohhhhhhh!
03:01 (Train whistle blowing)
03:23 Oh we are going to try go up to the Pullman's car
03:25 to see what is up in front of the train.
03:27 You'll all be careful.
03:33 Let's go up here.
03:37 Some of my kids wanted to come on inside and cool off a bit.
03:39 I love it in here.
03:40 Do you like the lights up there? Yeah!
03:43 Aren't they pretty? Looks like marble. - yeah.
04:29 (Train whistle blowing).
04:50 I guess we're getting really close to a shaky old Bridge.
04:53 There is a big Trestle that goes over a really high
04:56 gorge I think, and I am a little nervous because I don't like
05:00 heights, I hope it is not too tall. Let's see!
05:04 We have to hold on tight.
05:05 Oh here it is, here we come.
05:07 Okay let's look.
05:15 Oh, oh dear. Look how far down it is.
05:23 Oh look at those.
05:25 Oh yes you could.
05:26 You could parachute.
05:28 Ahhhhhh! Oh my!
05:35 I think this has been here too long.
05:37 Oh I hear it creaking.
05:43 Oh look there's a creek way down there.
05:46 A look at our shadow, do you see our shadow on the trees?
05:51 This is pretty but I sure hope it doesn't fall down.
05:53 I am really scared. - you're scared. - yes.
06:05 Oh that is cool.
06:32 We are having a blast and everything we see along the
06:35 tracks, aren't we having fun? Yes we are.
06:38 I'm glad that you could come along with us today too.
06:40 Ben I love it when you join us.
06:42 You can see along the tracks is all kinds of wildlife.
06:47 Wildflowers, I think I might have seen a bear out there.
06:54 Looks like the kind of the woods where a bear would live,
06:58 don't you think? Whew, what if you saw bear right now?
07:05 Would you like to go farther right now and see what is
07:07 up in the next car? - yeah.
07:09 Maybe if we are really lucky we could go up to the
07:13 engine after a bit. Do you think? I don't know.
07:18 Do you think we could try? - can we really go up there?
07:20 We can ask, they can always say no, right?
07:25 Maybe they will, maybe they won't will take our chances.
07:27 So why don't we go up into the next car and see what is
07:29 up there, okay, okay let's go.
07:56 Well as my mother used to say, we're all tired now.
08:01 When she said that she meant it was time for us to go
08:03 to bed, I think it might be time for us to go home
08:05 and take a nap too.
08:07 It's been a long afternoon but a really fun trip.
08:10 I'm so glad you came with us, right now if you go find
08:13 a paper and a pencil you can write down my address
08:16 so you could write to me.
08:17 You know I love getting letters.
08:19 So if you are ready here's the address.
08:25 Hey kids Graham Joyce would love to hear from you.
08:28 So why not sit down and write her a letter?
08:31 Like every grandma she loves to get pictures,
08:33 drawings or anything else you send her.
08:36 Just write to:
08:48 So what are you waiting for? Write her today.
08:54 It was a nice trip, Huh?
08:55 Kind of fun and interesting right? But not much
08:59 drama you say? Oh wrong.
09:02 You got to see part of the action, the real story
09:05 happened on the other side of the camera this time.
09:08 Like I said before, the crew from 3ABN was supposed
09:12 to meet us at the station a few minutes before
09:14 the time posted on the schedule.
09:16 But we didn't travel together from my house to the
09:19 station because the crew wanted to take a little
09:22 side trip and do some filming by themselves first.
09:25 We have plenty of time for them to do that and
09:27 we weren't worried with the kids and I got to
09:30 the station and the crew wasn't there yet.
09:32 We were so early we had time to explore a bit too.
09:36 As the time for departure got closer though, we went
09:41 back to the depot to wait for the train and
09:43 the guys from 3ABN.
09:45 Pretty soon other people started to arrive to get their
09:48 tickets too, a few people have become a crowd and
09:52 our friends still hadn't come.
09:54 We looked down the dusty road for some sign that
09:57 they were on their way, but we couldn't see a thing.
10:01 We paced back and forth as the minutes ticked by and
10:04 the engineer made a fire in the Firefox getting ready
10:07 to make water to turn into steam to drive the wheels
10:10 of the train.
10:11 We knew the old engine was getting ready to leave the
10:14 station and still the crew was nowhere in sight.
10:18 I was getting really worried,
10:20 the kids were getting rather anxious too.
10:22 Oh what would happen if the crew missed the train?
10:26 Well there wouldn't of been this program, that is what would
10:30 have happened, they would have missed out on a great
10:33 trip and we would have been saddened because we couldn't
10:36 share this time with them.
10:39 It was getting so late now, the conductor had called
10:43 all aboard, and some folks were climbing the ladder
10:46 into the open cars.
10:48 I wondered if Bobby and Cheryl had been in a wreck,
10:50 or if they had gotten lost. Who knew?
10:52 I was getting frantic and worried as I prayed for their
10:56 safety, just when I thought all was lost far away
11:00 around the bend on the dusty old road, I could see
11:04 a brownish sort of cloud rising above the trees.
11:08 A dirty white van came speeding around the corner,
11:11 going too fast and skidded on the gravel
11:14 and careened to a stop.
11:16 Ah ha, our team was here and not a moment too soon either.
11:20 Here they are I yelled to the conductor.
11:23 The crew spilled out of every door and grabbed their
11:27 gear as fast as they could and clambered aboard the old
11:31 locomotive, ha, gasping for breath.
11:34 We can laugh about it now, and I guess it was kind of
11:37 funny because everything turned out all right in the end.
11:41 But it got me to thinking, I was thinking about some of
11:44 the old time songs I remember about railroads and trains
11:48 and how they are likened to the good news about going to
11:51 heaven with Jesus.
11:53 One of these songs says:
11:54 Life is like a mountain railroad
11:57 with an engineer so brave.
11:59 We must make this run successful
12:01 from the cradle to the grave.
12:03 This one talks about how the most important thing in your
12:07 whole life is to stay with Jesus all the way and how
12:10 He will guide us safely through dark and dangerous
12:13 places to be home with Him at last.
12:16 Another song I remember is this one:
12:19 the Gospel trains a coming
12:20 I hear it just at hand
12:22 I hear the car wheel rumbling
12:25 rolling through the land
12:26 I hear the train a coming,
12:28 she's come-in around the curve.
12:30 She's loosen all her steam and breaks
12:32 and straining every nerve.
12:33 The fare is cheap, the rich and poor are there
12:37 no second-class aboard this train
12:40 no difference in the fare.
12:41 Then the chorus says:
12:43 get onboard little children, get onboard little children
12:47 get onboard little children, there's room for many a more
12:50 When some people hear about Jesus for the first time
12:53 they know right away they want to go live with Him and
12:57 they start getting ready immediately.
12:59 They know He is coming soon so they don't doddle around
13:03 taking side trips or get distracted by anything.
13:06 They look straight ahead and go for it.
13:09 That's the way I want to be too.
13:12 Then there are others who know the train is coming,
13:16 but they want to see and do other things first.
13:19 They don't want to miss out on anything so they think
13:22 they will do all the fun stuff first and get serious
13:26 about Jesus, oh I mean the train later.
13:28 Sometimes later never happens and they never get onboard.
13:33 And they never go home with Jesus, oh what a terrible,
13:37 terrible tragedy that would be.
13:40 You know what I'm trying to say by telling you this
13:42 little incident that happened when we were filming one
13:45 of our adventures don't you?
13:47 I'm trying to tell you with all my heart how important
13:50 it is for you to give your heart to Jesus right now.
13:54 Don't wait, and remember He loves you so much and so do I.
