00:01 Hi kids I am on the second day of my vacation to
00:03 Southern Illinois in a beautiful little town called
00:08 Ziegler, and it has the population 1698 people.
00:11 Today they have 699 people because I'm here.
00:15 Well I want you to meet a good friend of mine,
00:19 this is Ben Burkhamer.
00:21 I met him when I was making 3ABN programs over there
00:25 at the studios, he works in production and he's a really
00:30 good guy, I just love him.
00:32 In his spare time he likes to hang around fire trucks.
00:34 That's right! - and so do I.
00:36 so he invited us over here today and he is going to show
00:39 us all about the fire department here.
00:41 Take it away Ben. - all right well we are going to
00:43 talk to you guys today and we are actually going to take
00:45 the engine out and drive it out somewhere.
00:47 We are going to put some water through it and show you
00:49 how we work a pumper engine.
00:51 Oh that sounds like fun.
00:53 Before we go I'm going to get in with you and let's get
00:55 ready to go. - well alright you guys stand back.
00:57 Because I might be driving the fire truck, who knows
01:00 what can happen to that, ah tell you that could be
01:03 scary, but here we go.
01:05 He is going to show me how, right? - that's right.
01:07 Alright here we go.
01:27 Heh, I started the fire engine, what do you think?
01:30 Now you better really get out of the way I'm going to go
01:33 for it, see you there!
02:12 Wow, was that ever fun. It is the most fun I've had for
02:16 years except for being with you guys.
02:19 Well here's Ben and he is going to shut her off for me.
02:25 That was fun guys. - it was a little scary.
02:27 Yeah that was fun a little scary - quite a ride.
02:31 Heh Ben introduced your friends.
02:34 Alright, these are a few of my buddies that I work with
02:36 here on the fire department and one of them I work with,
02:38 at Three Angels Broadcasting, she's a friend of ours
02:41 at 3ABN and with this is Ron Newton and how long have
02:44 you been on this service Ron? - 52 years.
02:46 52 years - just a few short years huh?
02:48 - that's amazing. And with us is a new rookie.
02:51 And he has been with us how long Brian? - 2 months.
02:53 This is Brian King and he's been with this two months
02:55 and he is learning a lot.
02:56 So okay were going to start off and we are going to do
02:58 a quick tour of the engine.
02:59 We'll keep moving. In here is where we hold two firemen
03:02 on this side and two on the other side and you have
03:05 already seen the cab and firemen set up there.
03:07 So this holds six people, six firemen can sit on this
03:09 engine and over here is our pump panel.
03:12 This is the really cool part of the engine.
03:15 - oh it is.- we have all these different levers and
03:18 knobs for pulling this and it will make the deck gun on
03:21 the top shoot water and we are actually going to shoot
03:23 water from it. - all that will be good.
03:25 We call it a deluge gun and we're deluge people
03:28 with the deluge gun. - Alright!
03:30 It is the intake and we are going to put the water in.
03:32 - from the hydrant. - Huge!
03:34 In here is one of our compartment panels were we hold
03:37 different hand tools. - all kinds of things.
03:39 - all different things. - any thing you might need
03:41 in a fire. - everything in here we need in a fire.
03:43 This is for car firers it's an inductor.
03:47 We've got that - alright. - and over here is where
03:50 we put our air packs on. You see those firemen going
03:53 into burning buildings. - oh yeah.
03:54 They don't go in without one of these because they
03:56 couldn't breathe inside without that. - right.
03:58 And that is called an SCBA Self-Contained Breathing
04:02 Apparatus. And then in here is just more compartments
04:06 for a hose. - a hose, you have a lot of hose don't you?
04:10 A couple of different sizes too.
04:12 Sure, and that when we call a 5 inch hose and I like this
04:14 this runs a lot of water through it.
04:17 A 5 inch hose can haul water from long distances.
04:20 And lots of it. - and you might need that. - sure.
04:23 This is a holding tank and it holds 1500 gallons.
04:26 We just pull that thing out and open it up and it looks
04:29 like a big swimming pool. - ah cool.
04:31 We need a pump for that because there's no hydrant.
04:32 Oh yeah. - tanker trucks come fill it up.
04:34 Most fires happen within hydrant range? - No sometimes
04:37 they are out in the country and there is no fire hydrant
04:39 so what are you going to do then?
04:41 - you're right then you're prepared.
04:42 This engine has different functions and we can actually
04:44 respond to car accidents in this engine.
04:47 In here's what we have is auto extrication equipment.
04:51 Wow, that's huge. - its huge heavy equipment, those
04:55 weigh 50 pounds apiece, there are three different things
04:58 there, a ram which pushes the dashboard up,
05:01 your dash roll ups, and there's cutters here which
05:03 sheers that metal and pinches it like big old crab claws.
05:06 And this looks like crap claws too but it's a spreader
05:08 and it will actually spread the middle part so you can
05:11 reach in and pull people out, you will help get them
05:14 out of the vehicle.
05:15 Some matter what you find, you are ready? - we are ready.
05:16 What is that a lot of comfort for us to know you
05:20 guys are ready. - here's more equipment that goes
05:23 along with that, that is the pump that runs the
05:26 equipment and these hoses. - wow.
05:30 Now does each different firemen have a different job?
05:34 And he only does the same job? - well because we don't
05:37 have tons of firemen on the department so we have to be
05:40 trained in every aspect because you may have to fill
05:43 someone else's role.
05:44 If someone else is missing you have to be able to step
05:47 in and do the job, so we do have certain firemen who are more
05:50 proficient in certain areas.
05:52 So they will be assigned to that area that they are
05:55 proficient in.
05:56 So this is the other side of the engine where we have
05:59 already shown to firemen on the side and this is where
06:01 I rode with you in and we saw the cab riding in.
06:05 It was a fun ride.
06:06 Heh this is the front of the engine and this will end
06:09 me showing you what we do on the engine and this is the
06:12 front intake and we can actually pull water through this
06:15 front intake. - cool, and this is where all the bells
06:18 and the sirens and the whistles and the lights are.
06:21 These of the lights and all the wig-wags and flashers
06:24 and sirens at all the cool stuff.
06:27 I can't thank you enough for letting me get in that truck,
06:29 I had a blast and I know the kids had a blast too.
06:31 And I had a blast too that was so nice.
06:33 - Will good, so we are going to head out and you're
06:35 going to sprays us with water.
06:36 We're going to hookup to the hydrant here and spray
06:39 some water. - alright let's go.
06:53 We now have our hose rolled out. - right.
06:55 We are going to hook this one and up to the engine and
06:59 one up to the hydrant. - alright, can I help?
07:01 Sure you can push down this little knob for me.
07:04 That comes off and this we just want to line it up to the
07:12 little slots. - we make it look so easy.
07:14 It fits right into place. - awesome.
07:21 It looks like it goes pretty quick. - it does.
07:23 Are I've are going to line these up again.
07:25 - oh yeah I see. And that is all there is to it.
07:29 You have to do a quick right?
07:31 Now we have to turn the hydrant and on.
07:32 Before we do I'm going to start the fire engine.
07:35 We're ready now to pump this. - alright.
07:37 Alright are we ready? - I'm ready if you are.
07:39 Okay let's start the engine again.
08:03 Okay were going to open the hydrant. - okay.
08:04 Its 15 turns - 15 so let's push together. - Alright.
08:18 Looks like a bow constrictor.
08:20 Now if you're ready up there? We got to primed the pump
08:25 first. - okay. - start the primer.
08:31 Now are going to open up the deluge gun.
08:51 Now were going to get wet.
09:06 Ah now that was a cool shower and it really felt good.
09:10 They're working on a deluge gun anyway they are going to
09:14 work so we can play outside a little bit.
09:16 But I can sure see how they can put a lot of water on
09:18 a fire with real quick with that.
09:21 This has been great, this fire truck is so fascinating.
09:25 Well Ben are you cool off now? - a little.
09:31 That's part of the job, the guy that runs the pump
09:32 is liable to get wet.
09:34 Yeah and a day like this that feels good. - well yeah.
09:38 When it's cold you better be careful.
09:41 How far out does that thing shoot?
09:43 - several hundred feet. The big thing is that it will
09:47 actually loft, I have to re-prime it now.
09:54 While we are still playing with this fire engine, I have
09:57 remember to call the right thing.
09:58 You guys oughta get your pens and pencils ready and grab
10:02 a piece of paper.
10:03 I'd love to hear from you guys, like I want to know
10:06 what you are doing on your vacation.
10:08 Anyway if you're ready here's my address.
10:16 Hey kids Graham Joyce would love to hear from you.
10:19 So why not sit down and write her a letter?
10:22 Like every grandma she loves to get pictures,
10:24 drawings or anything else you send her.
10:27 Just write to:
10:39 So what are you waiting for? Write her today.
10:46 I sure hope you enjoyed watching Ben show off his
10:48 fire engine and the things that it could do.
10:50 He is pretty proud of his job as a firemen,
10:53 as he should be and he likes to keep that beautiful
10:56 engine clean and shiny red.
10:58 He takes good care of all his equipment too.
11:01 Those hoses are always folded just so and his personal
11:05 gear is always ready to go whenever the call comes in.
11:08 I guess sometimes it sounds like firemen live a pretty
11:12 exciting life, doesn't it?
11:14 They do, well some of the time but it isn't exciting all
11:17 of the time, sometimes they just have to wait around for
11:21 hours or even days without any action at all.
11:24 But they have to be ready all the time in case something
11:28 does happen and someone needs their help.
11:30 Firemen do a lot more than just put out fires too.
11:33 They do everything from rescuing puppies that have
11:37 fallen into a storm drain, or a kitten stuck up a tree, clear
11:42 down to giving first aid at the scene of a car accident.
11:45 Remember the stuff Ben had stashed in one of his
11:47 compartments on the side the engine?
11:49 Boy the tools there could cut through metal or pry a
11:52 part crumbled car doors to save people.
11:55 They just have to be ready to help out
11:57 in any emergency no matter what.
12:00 What do you think? Could you help somebody in an
12:03 emergency? Yeah I think you could, but knowing what to do
12:08 doesn't come naturally, you have to learn that.
12:10 Like you know what to do if someone is choking, or gets
12:14 a cut, or is drowning?
12:15 Do you know how to tell if an injury is really serious
12:19 and you need a doctor right away?
12:20 If you live in America I'm sure you'll know how to call
12:24 911 and that is a very important step when first aid
12:28 isn't enough, but here's the thing.
12:30 If you want to be the person who could help somebody in
12:34 distress, you need to learn how.
12:36 And you need to be ready to help all of the time.
12:40 Why don't you take a class in first aid, it could be
12:43 really fun and remember knowledge is power.
12:47 Having the knowledge to help will make you feel more
12:50 confident and able to handle the unexpected.
12:53 Then you'll be the one who keeps a cool head and
12:56 who knows what to do.
12:58 Next you can be sure that your family has a first rate
13:02 emergency kit, both at home and one in your car.
13:05 Don't forget there are many different kinds of emergencies
13:09 and be prepared for anything.
13:11 Be sure your always have extra water and duct tape.
13:15 Those are my favorites, especially duct tape,
13:18 you can fix most anything if you have enough of it.
13:21 you can think about what to do if there was an
13:25 earthquake were tornado in your area?
13:27 What would you need to have on hand to help others?
13:30 How could you help your family?
13:32 These are important questions and even though you may
13:36 be still a kid, you could save someone's life by being
13:40 ready, but the most important thing you will ever do
13:44 is to be ready for Jesus to come.
13:46 Until I see you again remember to always
13:50 be ready for any emergency.
13:53 Remember that I love you, but remember that Jesus
13:56 loves you even more.
