00:01 Hey kids we are out in the middle of the Ohio River,
00:03 right between two states. 00:04 We've got 1 foot in one and 1 foot in the other. 00:07 There's Kentucky that away and Illinois that away. 00:10 And the best part is down the river, up the river 00:13 whatever, it's one of those caves. 00:15 You can see Cave in the Rocks and there's a place called 00:19 Cave-In Rock. 00:21 There is some fantastic tall tales told about that place. 00:25 I'm going in, I hope you are not scared. 00:27 Don't even know what I would find in there, could be 00:31 Pirates, could be treasure, could be most anything. 00:34 So are you up to some adventure this afternoon? 00:36 Hey, come on with me were almost on the far shore. 00:39 Let's go! 00:59 Hey guys, I want to tell you the story about the river 01:01 Pirates on this stretch of river. 01:03 You can look out and see all the way up 01:05 and down the river. 01:06 Well back in the old days, way, way old days, in fact 01:10 I think it was around the Revolutionary war time. 01:13 There used to be real pirates on this river, 01:16 can you believe it? 01:17 Do you believe in real pirates? No! 01:20 I used to think pirates were not real either. 01:22 I used to think they were fiction but I found out later 01:25 they are, they were real. 01:26 What these guys would do, pirates are people that rob 01:30 other people and sometimes they do even worse than rob, 01:33 sometimes they even kill them 01:35 just to get their stuff. 01:37 So what these guys do, I have heard, is hang out in this 01:40 cave down here, they wouldn't just say, come in here 01:42 this is a pirate cave. 01:44 How do you think they would lure them in? 01:47 How? - drag them. - drag them, yet they could have 01:50 done that. Well I heard tale what they would do is put 01:54 a sign out there that says, eats and drinks and comfort. 01:58 Come on in here and take a rest. 02:00 The people believed it, they believed what they saw on 02:02 the outside of the cave and they will go in to get a meal, 02:05 or lay down for the night. 02:06 They would make them feel all cozy and cook a good meal 02:10 for them and then in the middle of the night, when they 02:14 were sleeping, they would get up and rob them blind, 02:17 they had not a thing. 02:18 I heard that the next town down there was a house that if 02:21 they got away from here, they would stop there for safety. 02:23 Guess what? It's the same gang, same gang of pirates 02:28 that ran this cave, ran that went down there. 02:31 So if they escaped from one, 02:32 they got snagged in the next one. 02:35 If you guys are ready I'm putting on my pirate hat. 02:39 I am heading down to the river to lurk with the Pirates and see 02:44 what kind of golden treasure we can find. 02:47 Come on, let's go guys. 02:49 Can I help you down? Can you jump? 03:03 Whew, oh it is cool, doesn't it feel good? 03:06 Good on a summer afternoon. 03:09 Come on girls, let's go see. 03:12 Ah, it's feeling better and better. 03:14 The closer you get in here the cooler it gets. 03:16 I want to climb don't you? 03:20 Oh yeah, come on. Let's go. 03:25 It does. Oh yep. 03:29 Wow! Do you suppose they had fires in here? 03:33 Come on girls. 03:35 Whoa! Look up over your head's. 03:45 Oh, isn't that cool? 03:48 Then up here it gets even more interesting. 03:52 There is more rooms. 04:00 We're standing in the middle of a light shaft. 04:01 Look up over your heads. 04:03 Isn't that cool? It goes clear up to the ground. 04:05 I guess water over the years eroded that and washed all those 04:08 rocks away, so now if you had really long legs 04:11 you can get out of here if you had to. Huh? 04:15 Look up on the ceiling over there, did you notice when 04:18 we came in all the names on the roof? 04:20 Yeah. - how do you suppose they got up there? 04:22 Do you know? Climbed, they could have. 04:24 Could you climb up in the middle of there? 04:26 No. - I couldn't either. 04:28 I was thinking they might have got a really long ladder, 04:30 but I don't think they could have carried it 04:31 on the rocks either. 04:32 The Lady up at the gift shop told me that what 04:36 they actually did was when the river rose, the water would 04:39 come up higher and higher and back in the cave back here. 04:42 Then they would come in a little boat and stand up in the 04:45 boat and paint their name so everybody would know that 04:48 they have been here. 04:50 Now back in this part, I think is probably where the real 04:52 nitty-gritty of pirate work went on. 04:55 What do you suppose the Pirates did? 05:00 They took from people. - they did. 05:02 What about if you guys are the people, and I'm going 05:05 to be the pirate. 05:07 Okay, you guys campout here, and you don't have a clue 05:11 that I am here. 05:13 Guess what? That pirate would come out. 05:19 Looking, looking, and there I get ya and I will carry 05:23 you off my lair. 05:25 Just like that. Kicking and screaming, huh? 05:30 Well Pirates really were pretty scary. 05:32 But you're not scary. - I'm not! 05:36 I tried my best to be scary as I could be. 05:40 Well the thing about pirates is that you can never tell 05:42 what they are up to. 05:43 Even though they look like they are just having fun 05:45 and a good place to rest, you never can tell 05:48 what you see on the surface. 05:50 We are back, way, way back furtherest 05:53 reaches of this cave. 05:55 Boy, you can even see a bird flying in. 05:56 It's kind of creepy back here, very dark and there is 05:59 mud on the floor. 06:00 It's really sticky, can you hold your shoe up here? 06:01 Show how dirty it is, yuck. 06:04 I know, it makes you stick to the floor. 06:07 But hey guys, come with me I want to show you something 06:09 up here a little farther up. 06:10 I think I found a fire pit where they used 06:14 to cook their dinners. 06:16 What do you think this looks like? 06:17 Does this look like it? - yeah. 06:19 Do you think you can find any food scraps in there? 06:22 Any coals or anything left? 06:25 It was a long, long time ago they were in here. 06:28 I don't think we have many Pirates left today. 06:30 Maybe they are just called by another name. 06:32 Alright, let's head on out. 06:34 It looks like popsicles. - popsicles too? 06:37 I'll tell you they had a real primitive diet, didn't they? 06:40 And sodas? And sodas I know. 06:43 You know I think those must be the descendents of the 06:46 Pirates left out. 06:48 What did you like about it in here? 06:50 You find any bones? - no! 06:51 No, not really, we found some outside though but 06:54 they were Fish bone's. Yeah it was muddy. 06:59 Well one thing I want you to remember about this pirate 07:02 cave is that things are not always the same on the inside 07:05 as they are on the outside. 07:07 Sometimes you can get fooled, you have to watch and be 07:11 wary, whoa! 07:17 Well kids, I hope you had as good a time 07:20 in here as we did. 07:24 Why don't you get out your paper and your pencil and 07:27 get ready to take down my address. 07:28 We are going to head back and I'm going to do a little 07:30 heart to heart talking with you in a minute. 07:32 But until then why don't you get ready to write down my 07:35 address so I can get your letter in the mail real soon. 07:38 Alright? Tally Ho! See you in a bit. 07:43 Hey kids Graham Joyce would love to hear from you. 07:46 So why not sit down and write her a letter? 07:49 Like every grandma she loves to get pictures, 07:51 drawings or anything else you send her. 07:54 Just write to: 08:07 So what are you waiting for? Write her today. 08:13 So, when is the last time you visited a cave? 08:16 They're really fun and can be so interesting. 08:19 Next time you are on vacation, maybe your family can 08:23 plan an excursion to one or two caves close to your route. 08:26 Part of fun is seeing how different one cave 08:29 is from another. 08:30 Up at Mount Rainier, if you hike up higher than the lodge, 08:34 there are ice caves. 08:36 These are made with glaciers ice melts in the 08:39 summertime and rundown little crevices in the ice. 08:41 It melts more and more ice on its way down. 08:44 Eventually the running water makes even more space under 08:48 the ice and a cave forms along sides of the stream. 08:51 By the time it reaches the edge of the glacier, 08:54 it can be large enough for lots of people to go inside. 08:57 Even hike up a long tunnel for maybe 09:00 a quarter of a mile or more. 09:02 It is so beautiful inside of an ice cave, it's blue 09:05 and the light is so soft that seems to come from 09:09 every direction at once. 09:11 But another kind of cave I've seen is as different as it 09:14 can be from the soft blue light of ice caves. 09:17 In Central Oregon there are lava tube caves made centuries 09:21 ago when some of the volcanoes in the area were erupting. 09:25 The hot lava would flow down the mountainside and out over 09:28 the valley floor. 09:30 Well the lava on top would cool first and turn to rock 09:33 faster than the stuff under the surface. 09:35 And it would make a tube of runny liquid like 09:38 an underground river. 09:40 Over time the middle would be eroded by rainwater and then 09:44 you would have a cave running through the lava beds. 09:47 These tubes run all over the place, mostly near the 09:50 surface and they are lots of fun to follow. 09:52 You just never know where they will pop back up to the 09:55 surface, kind of makes you feel like a gopher playing 09:58 in one of these. 09:59 The rocks in this kind of cave are really sharp and rough 10:03 though, if you go exploring in one of these you better 10:06 wear sturdy hiking boots and protect 10:08 your knees and elbows. 10:10 Then there are caves with pillars of rock in strange 10:14 formations, caves that are a tight squeeze between slabs 10:18 of rock, oww, I do not like those. 10:20 Caves that are holes in the ground full of water, 10:23 and sometimes people go scuba diving. 10:25 There are caves for bats live and caves where 10:27 glowworms glow. 10:29 Wow! everyone is different and just begs to be explored. 10:33 But you know as we started our adventure today with the 10:37 cave and the river bank where Pirates lurked for the unwary. 10:40 These days we don't hear so much about pirates, 10:43 but there still are some around doing their dastardly 10:47 deeds on the high seas, over around Somalia and 10:49 some other remote places. 10:51 I have been trying to think of what I really want to say 10:55 about caves and Pirates and stuff. 10:58 How I can help you to see something important out of all 11:01 this, it's just that I want you to think a little more 11:04 about grown-up things than most kids your age do. 11:07 But I know how intelligent you are, and I know you like 11:11 to ponder on deep things. 11:13 And I know that your thoughts go much deeper than many 11:16 people would give you credit for. 11:18 I want you to think about your character today. 11:21 What kind of person do you want to be tomorrow? 11:24 Just like all the caves talked about have a different 11:28 character from each other, well so do people. 11:30 Some good deep underground, some run around all over the 11:34 surface, some are full of beautiful light, and some are 11:38 cold and dark and wet. 11:41 You kids are very important people because soon you will 11:45 be the teachers, doctors, firemen, plumbers, citizens and 11:49 leaders who are going to be in charge of the world. 11:52 How you going to change the world? 11:54 Yes you, every single person alive changes the world 11:59 in some way, you just can't help it. 12:01 The thing is how are you going to change it? 12:04 It's not too early to start thinking about that. 12:08 Because even this very minute you are changing the world 12:11 by just being in it. 12:14 It's called influence, and everybody has some, even people 12:19 who think they don't. 12:20 Your influence comes from things you think about, and the 12:23 things you say and do. 12:26 Well your influence is kind of like gravity. 12:28 You know how that works right? 12:30 Which has more influence, or more gravity, if I had 12:33 a ping-pong ball and a ball bearing, which one would be 12:37 heavier? The ball bearing right? 12:40 It is the same with your character or your influence. 12:43 The more important and substantial your thoughts and 12:47 aspirations, the more weight they carry and the more 12:50 they influence people around you. 12:53 Well which has more influence on our earth? 12:57 Is it the sun or the moon? You could always tell by 13:00 which one goes around the other. 13:02 Our earth goes around the sun because the sun has more 13:05 gravity, more pull. 13:08 The moon goes around us because we have more gravity 13:11 than it does, but one in the middle is the one who has 13:14 the most influence and that is where God is. 13:18 Everything revolves around Him, but we have our sphere of 13:22 influence too and the more you thoughts are like God's 13:26 thoughts, the more they will attract other people to Him. 13:30 When I talked to you in a little heart-to-heart chats 13:33 like this, I am using my influence to change 13:37 the world through you. 13:39 I want you to be inspired, challenged, prepared for 13:43 everything God wants you to be. 13:46 Don't be satisfied with low achievements, 13:48 reach for the stars. 13:50 Remember God will help you because this is His purpose 13:53 for you and He has promised. 13:55 I love you and God loves you even more. |
