00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer.
00:19 Today we'll be reading from the book of Acts, in the King James
00:22 Version, Chapter 18,
00:24 but before we start to read, let's go to God
00:26 in prayer together.
00:28 Dear God, thank you so much for allowing us to come into Your
00:33 presence, and to make a request of You that Jesus has told us to
00:38 make in His name,
00:39 and so we ask that You please send the Holy Spirit to be with
00:43 us right now, to lead us and to guide us as we read; to write on
00:48 our hearts in a new way the words that we will hear,
00:52 that we may learn the lessons from those who have gone before
00:55 us, and served You faithfully, and that we may serve
00:57 You more faithfully,
00:59 and we pray this in Jesus' name.
01:01 Thank You.
01:02 Amen.
01:03 Reading today from the book of Acts in the King James Version,
01:07 Chapter 18, and starting with verse 5.
01:10 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia,
01:15 Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that
01:19 Jesus was Christ.
01:20 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed,
01:24 he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon
01:28 your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go
01:33 unto the Gentiles.
01:34 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's
01:38 house, named Justus, one that worshiped God, whose house
01:42 joined hard to the synagogue.
01:44 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the
01:48 Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing
01:52 believed, and were baptized.
01:55 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision,
01:59 Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:
02:05 for I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee:
02:10 for I have much people in this city.
02:13 And he continued there a year and six months,
02:17 teaching the word of God among them.
02:20 And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made
02:25 insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him
02:28 to the judgment seat, saying, This fellow persuadeth men to
02:32 worship God contrary to the law.
02:34 And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto
02:39 the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness,
02:44 O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
02:48 but if it be a question of words and names, and of your law,
02:53 look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
02:57 And he drave them from the judgment seat.
03:00 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of
03:04 the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat.
03:08 And Gallio cared for none of those things.
03:12 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while,
03:15 and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into
03:18 Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his
03:22 head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.
03:25 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself
03:29 entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.
03:32 When they desired him to tarry longer time with them,
03:36 he consented not; but bade them farewell, saying, I must by all
03:41 means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem:
03:44 but I will return again unto you, if God will.
03:47 And he sailed from Ephesus.
03:49 And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up,
03:52 and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.
03:55 And after he had spent some time there, he departed,
03:59 and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order,
04:03 strengthening all the disciples.
04:06 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent
04:11 man, and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus.
04:16 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being
04:20 fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things
04:24 of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
04:27 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila
04:32 and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them,
04:35 and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
04:39 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote,
04:44 exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was
04:49 come, helped them much which had believed through grace:
04:53 for he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly,
04:57 showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
05:02 We're reading from the book of Acts, Chapter 19.
05:06 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth,
05:11 Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus;
05:15 and finding certain disciples, he said unto them,
05:18 Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
05:21 And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether
05:26 there be any Holy Ghost.
05:28 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized?
05:32 And they said, Unto John's baptism.
05:36 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of
05:41 repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe
05:45 on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
05:49 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name
05:52 of the Lord Jesus.
05:54 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came
05:58 on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
06:01 And all the men were about twelve.
06:04 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space
06:08 of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning
06:13 the kingdom of God.
06:14 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil
06:19 of that way before the multitude, he departed from
06:22 them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in
06:26 the school of one Tyrannus.
06:28 and this continued by the space of two years; so that all they
06:33 which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus,
06:37 both Jews and Greeks.
06:39 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
06:43 so that from his body were brought unto the sick
06:47 handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them,
06:50 and the evil spirits went out of them.
06:52 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them
06:57 to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the
07:00 Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom
07:03 Paul preacheth.
07:04 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the
07:10 priests, which did so.
07:11 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I
07:16 know; but who are ye?
07:18 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them,
07:22 and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled
07:26 out of that house naked and wounded.
07:28 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at
07:31 Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord
07:35 Jesus was magnified.
07:37 And many that believed came, and confessed,
07:41 and showed their deeds.
07:43 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books
07:47 together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the
07:51 price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
07:56 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
08:01 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit,
08:06 when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to
08:10 Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there,
08:13 I must also see Rome.
08:15 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him,
08:20 Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia
08:24 for a season.
08:25 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
08:30 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith,
08:34 which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain
08:38 unto the craftsmen; whom he called together with the workmen
08:41 of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft
08:48 we have our wealth.
08:50 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost
08:55 throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away
08:59 much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with
09:02 hands: so that not only this our craft is in danger to be set
09:07 at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess
09:10 Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be
09:14 destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshipeth.
09:18 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of
09:21 wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
09:25 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having
09:30 caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia,
09:33 Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord
09:37 into the theater.
09:38 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people,
09:41 the disciples suffered him not.
09:43 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends,
09:47 sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself
09:51 into the theater.
09:52 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another:
09:55 for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not
09:58 wherefore they were come together.
10:00 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude,
10:03 the Jews putting him forward.
10:04 And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made
10:07 his defense unto the people.
10:09 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about
10:14 the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana
10:17 of the Ephesians.
10:19 And when the town clerk had appeased the people, he said,
10:23 Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how
10:29 that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great
10:32 goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
10:35 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against,
10:39 ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
10:43 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers
10:47 of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
10:50 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with
10:54 him, have a matter against any man, the law is open,
10:57 and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
11:01 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters,
11:05 it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
11:07 For we are in danger to be called in question for this
11:10 day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an
11:14 account of this concourse.
11:16 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
11:20 We're reading from the book of Acts, Chapter 20.
11:23 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the
11:27 disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go
11:31 into Macedonia.
11:32 And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them
11:36 exhortation, he came into Greece, and there abode
11:40 three months.
11:41 And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail
11:44 into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.
11:48 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea;
11:53 and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus;
11:56 and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothesus; and of Asia,
12:00 Tychicus and Trophimus.
12:03 These going before tarried for us at Troas.
12:06 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened
12:09 bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days;
12:12 where we abode seven days.
12:15 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came
12:18 together to break bread, Paul preached unto them,
12:21 ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech
12:25 until midnight.
12:26 And there were many lights in the upper chamber,
12:28 where they were gathered together.
12:29 And there sat in a window a certain young man named
12:33 Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was
12:37 long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from
12:42 the third loft, and was taken up dead.
12:45 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said,
12:49 Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.
12:52 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread,
12:56 and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day,
13:00 so he departed.
13:01 And they brought the young man alive, and were not
13:05 a little comforted.
13:06 And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos,
13:11 there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed,
13:15 minding himself to go afoot.
13:17 And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in,
13:21 and came to Mitylene.
13:23 And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against
13:27 Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at
13:30 Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.
13:33 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not
13:37 spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for
13:41 him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
13:46 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the
13:49 elders of the church.
13:50 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know,
13:53 from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I
13:57 have been with you at all seasons, serving the Lord with
14:00 all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations,
14:04 which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: and how I
14:09 kept back nothing that was profitable unto you,
14:12 but have showed you, and have taught you publicly,
14:15 and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews,
14:19 and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God,
14:21 and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
14:24 Thank you for being with me today, to read
14:27 His Words Are Life, and please join me again next time,
14:30 until then, may God bless you.
