00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we will continue to read in the 00:22 book of Hebrews. 00:23 But before we read together, lets pray. 00:26 Dear Jesus, thank You again for the blessing of Your word to 00:31 read to strengthen us and to guide us. 00:34 We've been spending time reading about the heroes of faith 00:38 in the Bible; men and women like us who actually lived, 00:43 for pretty much of us, a lot harder lives than we've seen 00:46 so far. 00:47 We haven't yet been tortured for You, and we haven't been 00:52 imprisoned, most of us, for You; and yet we find our faith is so 00:58 weak sometimes. 00:59 We want to be strong. 01:00 We long to be like the men and women that we've 01:03 read about here. 01:04 Please come and take our feeble faith and make it burn brighter. 01:09 We're like the father in the story that said, Lord I believe 01:13 but help my unbelief. 01:14 Take our hearts and make them fully Yours so that we may be 01:21 of service to You, and to each other, to the glory of 01:24 Your name. 01:25 We love You so much, and thank You for loving us. 01:27 Amen. 01:28 We're continuing to read in Hebrews, and the verse that 01:33 we're going to start on is chapter 13, and verse 15. 01:36 It has a phrase in it that I've always loved. 01:39 I think of it often when I sit down to play the piano. 01:42 It talks about the sacrifice of praise. 01:44 And that is what He is looking for from each one of us; 01:48 a sacrifice of praise to Him. 01:50 We're created to show forth His praise. 01:52 Let's read now Hebrews 13, starting with verse 15. 01:55 This is the King James Version. 01:57 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God 02:03 continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, 02:07 giving thanks to his name. 02:09 But to do good and to communicate forget not: 02:13 for with such sacrifices God is well-pleased. 02:16 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: 02:20 for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, 02:25 that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: 02:28 for that is unprofitable for you. 02:30 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, 02:34 in all things willing to live honestly. 02:36 But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored 02:41 to you the sooner. 02:42 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our 02:46 Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood 02:50 of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good 02:54 work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing 02:59 in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory 03:03 for ever and ever. 03:04 Amen. 03:05 And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: 03:10 for I have written a letter unto you in few words. 03:13 Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, 03:17 if he come shortly, I will see you. 03:20 Salute all them that have the rule over you, 03:23 and all the saints. 03:24 They of Italy salute you. 03:25 Grace be with you all. 03:27 Amen. 03:28 Continuing now to read the general epistle of James, 03:34 and this is the King James Version; James chapter 1. 03:37 James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, 03:41 to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. 03:45 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers 03:50 temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith 03:55 worketh patience. 03:57 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be 04:01 perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 04:04 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, 04:08 that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; 04:12 and it shall be given him. 04:14 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. 04:18 For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the 04:22 wind and tossed. 04:24 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing 04:27 of the Lord. 04:28 A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. 04:31 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 04:37 but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of 04:43 the grass he shall pass away. 04:45 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, 04:48 but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, 04:51 and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the 04:57 rich man fade away in his ways. 04:59 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is 05:05 tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord 05:08 hath promised to them that love him. 05:09 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: 05:14 for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he 05:18 any man: but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away 05:22 of his own lust, and enticed. 05:24 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, 05:29 when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 05:33 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 05:36 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, 05:40 and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no 05:43 variableness, neither shadow of turning. 05:46 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, 05:52 that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 05:55 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, 06:01 slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not 06:07 the righteousness of God. 06:09 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of 06:15 naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, 06:19 which is able to save your souls. 06:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, 06:27 deceiving your own selves. 06:29 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, 06:32 he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 06:37 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, 06:40 and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 06:43 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, 06:48 and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, 06:53 but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 06:58 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his 07:04 tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's 07:08 religion is vain. 07:09 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father 07:14 is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, 07:19 and to keep himself unspotted from the world. 07:22 Continuing to read in the book of James, chapter 2. 07:27 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, 07:32 the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 07:35 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, 07:39 in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man 07:44 in vile raiment; and ye have respect to him that weareth the 07:48 gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; 07:51 and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my 07:56 footstool: are ye not then partial in yourselves, 08:00 and are become judges of evil thoughts? 08:02 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor 08:07 of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which 08:12 he hath promised to them that love him? 08:14 But ye have despised the poor. 08:17 Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the 08:20 judgment seats? 08:21 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which 08:24 ye are called? 08:25 If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, 08:29 Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: 08:33 but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, 08:37 and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 08:40 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one 08:45 point, he is guilty of all. 08:47 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, 08:52 Do not kill. 08:53 Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, 08:58 thou art become a transgressor of the law. 09:00 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged 09:05 by the law of liberty. 09:06 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shown 09:10 no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. 09:14 What doeth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he 09:18 hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 09:22 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 09:26 and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed 09:30 and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which 09:34 are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 09:38 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 09:43 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: 09:48 show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my 09:54 faith by my works. 09:56 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: 10:01 the devils also believe, and tremble. 10:04 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without 10:09 works is dead? 10:10 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had 10:14 offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 10:17 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works 10:22 was faith made perfect? 10:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed 10:27 God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: 10:31 and he was called the friend of God. 10:34 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, 10:39 and not by faith only. 10:40 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, 10:46 when she had received the messengers, and had sent them 10:48 out another way? 10:49 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without 10:54 works is dead also. 10:56 Continuing to read in the book of James, chapter 3. 10:59 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall 11:04 receive the greater condemnation. 11:06 For in many things we offend all. 11:09 If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, 11:14 and able also to bridle the whole body. 11:17 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may 11:20 obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 11:23 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, 11:28 and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a 11:32 very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 11:36 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth 11:41 great things. 11:42 Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 11:46 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: 11:50 so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth 11:54 the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; 11:57 and it is set on fire of hell. 11:59 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, 12:03 and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of 12:06 mankind: but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, 12:11 full of deadly poison. 12:14 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; 12:18 and therewith curse we men, which are made after the 12:22 similtude of God. 12:24 out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. 12:28 My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 12:33 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water 12:37 and bitter? 12:38 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? 12:42 either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water 12:48 and fresh. 12:50 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? 12:53 let him show out of a good conversation his works with 12:58 meekness of wisdom. 13:00 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, 13:05 glory not, and lie not against the truth. 13:08 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, 13:13 sensual, devilish. 13:15 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every 13:20 evil work. 13:21 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, 13:25 then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, 13:31 full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, 13:35 and without hypocrisy. 13:37 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them 13:42 that make peace. 13:43 Continuing with James, Chapter 4. 13:46 From whence come wars and fightings among you? 13:50 come they not hence, even of your lusts that war 13:54 in your members? 13:55 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, 13:59 and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, 14:03 because ye ask not. 14:05 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, 14:09 that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 14:12 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship 14:16 of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a 14:22 friend of the world is the enemy of God. 14:24 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that 14:28 dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 14:30 But he giveth more grace. |
