00:17 Hi and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:20 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and before
00:22 we read today, let's pray together.
00:24 Dear Jesus, thank you again for another opportunity
00:28 to read the stories of our brothers and sisters
00:32 who've gone before us and how You've led and guided them.
00:35 You've forgiven their sins, and You've blessed them
00:39 to Your name's glory.
00:40 Please lead and guide us now
00:42 as we open up these words. Forgive our sins.
00:45 Send Your Holy Spirit to create in us a clean heart
00:49 and to guide our minds into the truth of these words
00:52 and increase our faith.
00:53 Thank you for loving us; we love You so much. Amen.
00:58 When we were together last we were reading in Genesis
01:00 about the story of Jacob and Esau
01:03 and how Jacob deceived his father Isaac
01:06 in order to steal the blessing from him
01:09 and then ended up having to flee to his uncle Laban's
01:13 house... where he fell in love with Rachel
01:15 and wanted to work for her for seven years.
01:18 But he ended up being deceived himself,
01:21 because Laban gave him Leah instead
01:24 and he had to work another seven years for Rachel.
01:26 But when God saw that Jacob loved Rachel
01:30 and did not love Leah,
01:31 He opened up Leah to bear children for Jacob
01:35 but Rachel did not have any.
01:37 And that's where we pick up the story.
01:39 Genesis beginning chapter 30 verse 1.
01:42 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children,
01:46 Rachel envied her sister;
01:48 and said unto Jacob, "Give me children, or else I die. "
01:52 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said,
01:56 "Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee
01:59 the fruit of the womb? "
02:00 And she said, "Behold, my maid Bilhah, go in unto her;
02:04 and she shall bear upon my knees,
02:05 that I may also have children by her. "
02:08 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife:
02:11 and Jacob went in unto her.
02:13 And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
02:17 And Rachel said, "God hath judged me,
02:20 and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: "
02:22 therefore called she his name Dan.
02:26 And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again,
02:29 and bare Jacob a second son.
02:31 And Rachel said, "With great wrestlings have I wrestled
02:34 with my sister, and I have prevailed: "
02:37 and she called his name Naphtali.
02:40 When Leah saw that she had left bearing,
02:43 she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her to Jacob to wife.
02:47 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a son.
02:50 And Leah said, "A troop cometh: "
02:52 and she called his name Gad.
02:54 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a second son.
02:58 And Leah said, "Happy and I, for the daughters will call me
03:02 blessed: " and she called his name Asher.
03:05 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest,
03:09 and found mandrakes in the field
03:11 and brought them unto his mother Leah.
03:13 Then Rachel said to Leah, "Give me, I pray thee,
03:16 of thy son's mandrakes. "
03:18 And she said unto her, "Is it a small matter
03:21 that thou has taken my husband?
03:22 and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? "
03:26 And Rachel said, "Therefore he shall lie with thee tonight
03:29 for thy son's mandrakes. "
03:31 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening,
03:34 and Leah went out to meet him, and said,
03:35 "Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee
03:39 with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
03:43 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived,
03:46 and bare Jacob the fifth son.
03:49 And Leah said, "God hath given me my hire, because I have given
03:54 my maiden to my husband: " and she called his name Issachar.
03:59 And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
04:03 And Leah said, "God hath endued me with a good dowry;
04:07 now will my husband dwell with me because I have born him
04:10 six sons: " and she called his name Zebulun.
04:14 And afterwards she bare a daughter,
04:16 and called her name Dinah.
04:18 And God remembered Rachel,
04:20 and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
04:24 And she conceived, and bare a son;
04:26 and said, "God has taken away my reproach: "
04:29 And she called his name Joseph;
04:31 and said, "The Lord shall add to me another son. "
04:36 And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph,
04:39 that Jacob said unto Laban, "Send me away,
04:43 that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
04:47 Give me my wives and my children,
04:49 for whom I have served thee, and let me go:
04:52 for thou knowest my service which I have done thee. "
04:55 And Laban said unto him, "I pray thee, if I have found
04:58 favor in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience
05:03 that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake. "
05:07 And he said, "Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. "
05:11 And he said unto him, "Thou knowest how I have served thee,
05:14 and how thy cattle was with me.
05:17 For it was little which thou hadst before I came,
05:19 and it is now increased unto a multitude;
05:22 and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming:
05:24 and now when shall I provide for my own house also? "
05:28 And he said, "What shall I give thee? "
05:31 And Jacob said, "Thou shalt not give me any thing:
05:33 if thou wilt do this thing for me,
05:35 I will again feed and keep thy flock:
05:37 I will pass through all thy flock today,
05:41 removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle,
05:45 and all the brown cattle among the sheep,
05:47 and the spotted and speckled among the goats,
05:50 and of such shall be my hire.
05:53 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come,
05:57 when it shall come for my hire before thy face:
06:01 every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats,
06:04 and brown among the sheep,
06:06 that shall be counted stolen with me. "
06:08 And Laban said, "Behold, I would it might be
06:13 according to thy word. "
06:15 And he removed that day the he goats that were ring-streaked
06:19 and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled
06:21 and spotted, and every one that had some white in it,
06:25 and all the brown among the sheep,
06:26 and gave them into the hands of his sons.
06:29 And he set three day's journey betwixt himself and Jacob:
06:33 and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
06:35 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar,
06:39 and of the hazel and chestnut tree;
06:41 and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear
06:45 which was in the rods.
06:47 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks
06:50 in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came
06:53 to drink, that they should conceive when they
06:56 came to drink. And the flocks conceived before the rods,
07:00 and brought forth cattle ring- streaked, speckled, and spotted.
07:04 And Jacob did separate the lambs and set the faces of the flocks
07:08 toward the ring-streaked, and all the brown in the flock
07:11 of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves,
07:14 and put them not unto Laban's cattle.
07:16 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive
07:21 that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle
07:24 in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
07:28 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in:
07:31 so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.
07:36 And the man increased exceedingly,
07:39 and had much cattle, and maidservants,
07:41 and menservants, and camels, and asses.
07:45 We are continuing now with Genesis chapter 31,
07:49 and this is the King James version.
07:52 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying,
07:55 "Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's;
07:58 and of that which was our father's
07:59 hath he gotten all this glory. "
08:01 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold,
08:05 it was not toward him as before.
08:08 And the Lord said unto Jacob, "Return unto the land of thy
08:12 fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee. "
08:16 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah
08:19 to the field unto his flock.
08:20 And said unto them, "I see your father's countenance,
08:24 that it is not toward me as before;
08:27 but the God of my father hath been with me.
08:30 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
08:34 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages
08:38 ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
08:43 If he said thus, 'The speckled shall be thy wages; '
08:46 then all the cattle bare speckled:
08:48 and if he said thus, 'The ring- streaked shall be thy hire; '
08:51 then bare all the cattle ring-streaked.
08:53 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father,
08:56 and given them to me.
08:58 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived,
09:01 that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold,
09:05 the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ring-streaked,
09:09 speckled, and grizzled.
09:11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying,
09:14 'Jacob: ' And I said, 'Here am I. '
09:18 And He said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see,
09:21 all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ring-streaked,
09:25 speckled, and grizzled:
09:26 for I have been all that Laban doeth unto thee.
09:29 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar,
09:33 and where thou vowest a vow unto Me;
09:36 now arise, get thee out from this land, and return
09:40 unto the land of thy kindred. "
09:41 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him,
09:45 "Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us
09:48 in our father's house? Are we not counted of him strangers?
09:51 for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
09:55 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father,
09:59 that is ours, and our children's:
10:01 now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do. "
10:05 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
10:10 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods
10:13 which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting,
10:16 which he had gotten in Padanaram,
10:18 for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
10:21 And Laban went to shear his sheep:
10:24 and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
10:29 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian,
10:33 in that he told him not that he fled.
10:36 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up,
10:39 and passed over the river, and set his face
10:41 toward the mount Gilead.
10:43 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
10:46 And he took his brethren with him and pursued after him
10:49 seven days' journey;
10:50 and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
10:52 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night,
10:56 and said unto him, "Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob
11:01 either good or bad. " Then Laban overtook Jacob.
11:05 Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount:
11:07 and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
11:11 And Laban said to Jacob,
11:13 "What hast thou done,
11:15 that thou has stolen away
11:16 unawares to me, and carried away
11:18 my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
11:21 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly,
11:23 and steal away from me; and didst not tell me,
11:26 that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs,
11:29 and with tabret, and with harp?
11:30 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters?
11:34 thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
11:37 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt:
11:40 but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight,
11:43 saying, 'Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob
11:46 either good or bad. '
11:48 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone,
11:52 because thou sore longedst after thy father's house,
11:55 yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? "
12:00 And Jacob answered and said to Laban,
12:03 "Because I was afraid: " for I said,
12:06 "Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
12:09 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live:
12:13 before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me,
12:17 and take it to thee. "
12:18 For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
12:22 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent,
12:26 and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not.
12:30 Then he went out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
12:34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's
12:39 furniture, and sat upon them.
12:41 And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
12:45 And she said to her father, "Let it not displease my lord
12:49 that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women
12:53 is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
12:58 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban:
13:01 and Jacob answered and said to Laban,
13:03 "What is my trespass? what is my sin,
13:06 that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
13:09 Whereas thou has searched all my stuff,
13:12 what hast thou found of all thy household stuff?
13:15 set it here before my brethren and thy brethren,
13:19 that they may judge betwixt us both.
13:21 This twenty years have I been with thee;
13:25 thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young,
13:28 and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
13:31 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee;
13:35 I bare the loss of it;
13:36 of my hand dist thou require it,
13:38 whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
13:41 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me,
13:44 and the frost by night;
13:46 and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
13:49 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house;
13:52 I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters,
13:55 and six years for thy cattle:
13:57 and thou has changed my wages ten times.
14:00 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham,
14:04 and the fear of Isaac, had been with me,
14:06 surely thou hadst sent me away empty.
14:08 God hath seen mine affliction and the labor of my hands,
14:11 and rebuked thee yesternight. "
14:14 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob,
14:17 "These daughters are my daughters,
14:18 and these children are my children,
14:20 and these cattle are my cattle,
14:21 and all that thou seest is mine:
14:24 and what can I do this day unto these my daughters,
14:28 or unto their children which they have born? "
14:30 Please join me again next time
14:32 to read the Word of God together.
