00:17 Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:23 to read the Word of God. Before we start let's pray together. 00:25 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the wisdom that we are 00:30 going to read right now in these words, wisdom that comes from 00:34 You that is profitable to us, helps to make us more pure 00:40 and more usable by you. Please be with us now as we read 00:44 and change our hearts. We love you so much and thank you for 00:48 loving us. Amen 00:49 When we left off we were reading the account of Jacob taking Leah 00:54 and Rachael and fleeing, and Laban has pursued him, and 01:00 they are having some words about some stolen images and about 01:03 the wages that Laban gypped Jacob out of all those years. 01:09 We're picking up the story here in Genesis 31 verse 44. 01:14 And Laban is talking he says, Now therefore come thou, 01:18 let us make a covenant, I and thou. And let it be 01:22 And let it be for a witness between me and thee. 01:24 And Jacob took a stone and set it up for a pillar. And Jacob 01:29 said unto his brethren, Gather stones. And they took stones 01:33 and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap 01:36 and Laban called it Jegarsahadutha. 01:40 but Jacob called it Galeed. And Laban said, this heap 01:45 is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name 01:50 of it called Galeed; And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch 01:55 between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. If thou 02:01 shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives 02:03 beside my daughters, no man is with us; 02:06 see, God is witness betwixt me and thee. 02:10 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap and behold this pillar 02:15 which I have cast betwixt me and thee; This heap be witness, and 02:20 this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap 02:24 to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap 02:27 and this pillar unto me, for harm. 02:29 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, 02:32 the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware 02:36 by the fear of his father Isaac. Then Jacob offered sacrifice 02:40 upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: 02:43 and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. 02:47 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons 02:51 and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, 02:55 and returned unto his place. 02:57 We're continuing to read now in the book of Genesis, chapter 32 03:02 and this is the King James version. 03:04 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 03:08 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: 03:12 and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 03:15 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother 03:20 unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 03:22 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak 03:26 unto my Lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, 03:30 I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now: 03:33 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, 03:37 and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, 03:41 that I may find grace in thy sight. And the messengers 03:45 returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, 03:48 and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 03:53 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: 03:58 and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, 04:01 and herds, and the camels, into two bands; and said, 04:04 If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, 04:08 then the other company which is left shall escape. 04:11 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of 04:16 my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy 04:20 country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: 04:23 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the 04:28 truth, which thou has shewed unto thy servant; 04:30 for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become 04:35 two bands. Deliver me, I pray thee, 04:39 from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: 04:41 for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me and 04:46 the mother with the children. And thou saidst, I will surely 04:49 do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, 04:52 which cannot be numbered for multitude. And he lodged there 04:56 that same night; and took of that which came to his hand 05:00 a present for Esau his brother; Two hundred she goats, and 05:04 twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 05:07 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls 05:11 twenty she asses, and ten foals. And he delivered them unto the 05:16 hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; 05:19 and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, 05:22 and put a space betwixt drove and drove. And he commanded 05:27 the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee 05:30 and asketh thee, saying. Whose art thou and whither goest thou? 05:34 and whose are these before thee? Then thou shalt say, 05:38 They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord 05:43 Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us. 05:46 And so commanded he the second, and the third, 05:50 and all that followed the droves saying, On this manner shall ye 05:55 speak unto Esau, when ye find him. And say ye moreover, 05:59 behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, 06:04 I will appease him with the present that goeth before me. 06:07 And afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will 06:11 accept of me. So went the present over before him: 06:16 and himself lodged that night in the company. 06:20 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, 06:23 and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, 06:27 and passed over the ford Jabbok. And he took them, and sent them 06:31 over the brook, and sent over that he had. 06:35 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him 06:40 until the breaking of the day. 06:43 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, 06:47 he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's 06:51 thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 06:54 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, 06:59 I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 07:02 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 07:07 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel 07:12 for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, 07:17 and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, 07:20 Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it 07:25 that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 07:29 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel for I have seen God 07:35 face to face, and my life is preserved. 07:38 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, 07:43 and he halted upon his thigh. Therefore the children of Israel 07:47 eat not of the sinew which shrank, which if upon the hollow 07:51 of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow 07:54 of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. 07:57 We are continuing to read in Genesis, chapter 33. 08:02 And this is the King James version. 08:03 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, Esau 08:09 came and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children 08:13 unto Leah, and unto Rachael and unto the two handmaids. 08:16 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, 08:19 and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost 08:25 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground 08:28 seven times, until he came near to his brother. And Esau ran 08:34 to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck, 08:37 and kissed him: and they wept. And he lifted up his eyes, 08:43 and saw the children and the women and said, 08:45 Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God 08:48 hath graciously given thy servant, Then the handmaidens 08:51 came near, they and their children, and they bowed 08:54 themselves. And Leah also with her children, and they bowed 08:58 themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, 09:02 and they bowed themselves. And he said, What meanest thou 09:07 by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find 09:12 grace in the sight of my lord. And Esau said, I have enough, 09:17 my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself. 09:21 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee if now I have found grace 09:26 in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: 09:29 for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen 09:33 the face of God and thou wast pleased with me. 09:35 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; 09:39 because God hath dealt graciously with me, 09:42 and because I have enough. And he urged him and he took it. 09:46 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and 09:50 I will go before thee. And he said unto him, My lord knoweth 09:54 that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds 09:56 with young are with me: and men should overdrive them 10:00 one day, all the flock will die. Let my lord, I pray thee, 10:04 pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, 10:07 according as the cattle that goeth before me 10:10 and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my 10:14 lord unto Seir. And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee 10:19 some of the folk that are with me. 10:20 And he said, What needeth it? Let me find grace in the sight 10:26 of my lord. So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 10:31 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, 10:34 and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place 10:38 is called Succoth. And Jacob came to Shalem, 10:42 a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he 10:46 came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city 10:49 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread 10:53 his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's 10:56 father for an hundred pieces of money. 10:59 And he erected there an altar and called it Elelohe Israel. 11:04 Reading in Genesis, chapter 34. 11:07 And this is the King James version. 11:09 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, 11:14 went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem, 11:18 the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country saw her 11:22 he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 11:25 And his soul clave unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, 11:28 and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel. 11:32 And Shechem spake unto his father, Hamor, saying, Get me 11:36 this damsel to wife. And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah 11:41 his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: 11:45 and Jacob held his peace until they were come. 11:48 And Hamor the father of Shechem, went out unto Jacob to commune 11:52 with him. And the sons of Jacob came out of the field 11:56 when they heard it: and the men were grieved, 11:59 and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly 12:02 in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; 12:04 which thing ought not to be done. And Hamor communed 12:09 with them, saying, The soul of my son, Shechem longeth for 12:12 your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife. 12:16 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, 12:19 and take our daughters unto you. And ye shall dwell with us: 12:23 and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye 12:26 therein, and get you possessions therein. 12:29 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, 12:34 Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me 12:38 I will give. Ask me never so much dowry and gift, 12:42 and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: 12:44 but give me the damsel to wife. And the sons of Jacob answered 12:49 Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because 12:54 he had defiled Dinah their sister: 12:56 And they said unto them, we cannot do this thing, 12:59 to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; 13:02 for that were a reproach unto us but in this will we consent unto 13:06 you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be 13:10 circumcised; then will we give our daughters unto you, 13:13 and we will take your daughters unto us, and we will dwell 13:16 with you, and we will become as one people. But if ye will not 13:20 hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we 13:24 take our daughter, and we will be gone. 13:26 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son. 13:30 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had 13:33 delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable 13:35 than all the house of his father. And Hamor and Shechem 13:39 his son came unto the gate of their city, an communed with 13:42 the men of their city, saying, These men are peacable with us. 13:45 therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; 13:49 for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; 13:52 let us take their daughters to us for wives, 13:54 and let us give them our daughters. 13:56 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, 14:00 to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, 14:05 as they are circumcised. Shall not their cattle 14:08 and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? 14:11 only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us. 14:16 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all 14:20 that went out of the gate of his city; 14:22 and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate 14:26 of his city. Thank you for joining with me 14:30 to read today. Please join me next time. Goodbye. |
