00:17 Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we are going to be reading
00:22 in the book of Genesis, but before we start,
00:24 Let's pray together. Dear God. thank you so much for your words
00:29 that bless us, and encourage us, and strengthen us, and draw us
00:34 closer to you which is where we most want to be.
00:37 Please come and be with us now, as we read
00:41 and help us to understand, and help us to not just
00:44 hear the words but to let those words bear fruit in our lives.
00:49 We love you so much and thank You for loving us. Amen.
00:52 When we were last reading it was the story of Jacob and his sons
00:58 and there had been a man of the people where they were dwelling
01:02 who fell in love with their sister, Dinah,
01:04 and wanted to marry her. He had defiled her and his father
01:08 and he had come to Jacob and his sons and said,
01:10 can we please have Dinah to be his wife? And the sons of Jacob
01:16 lied to this man and his son, and told him that they would
01:20 give Dinah to him if they would all become circumcised. And
01:25 not only they but all of the men in their city.
01:27 And so they went back and convinced the men in their city
01:30 to do this and they thought they were going to be
01:34 striking a bargain with Jacob's sons.
01:36 We're picking up the story now in Genesis chapter 34,
01:40 with verse 25. This is the King James Version.
01:44 And it came to pass on the 3rd day, when they were sore,
01:51 - they were sore from being circumcised -
01:53 that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi,
01:56 Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword,
02:00 and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
02:04 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge
02:07 of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out
02:10 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city,
02:14 because they had defiled their sister. They took their sheep,
02:18 and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city,
02:21 and that which was in the field, and all their wealth,
02:24 and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive,
02:27 and spoiled even all that was in the house.
02:30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me
02:34 to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land,
02:37 among the Canaanites and the Perizzites:
02:40 and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves against
02:45 me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
02:48 And they said, Should he deal with our sister
02:52 as with a harlot? - We're continuing now in chapter 35.
02:56 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel,
03:00 and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared
03:04 unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau,
03:06 thy brother. Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all
03:10 that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you,
03:15 and be clean, and change your garments: And let us arise,
03:19 and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God,
03:22 who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the
03:26 way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods
03:30 which were in their hand, and all their earrings
03:32 which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak
03:35 which was by Shechem. And they journeyed: and the terror of God
03:39 was upon the cities that were round about them,
03:41 and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
03:44 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is,
03:48 Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
03:51 And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel:
03:56 because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face
03:58 of his brother. But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse died,
04:03 and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak:
04:06 and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
04:09 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of
04:13 Padanaram, and blessed him. And God said unto him,
04:16 Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more
04:20 Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name
04:25 Israel. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful
04:30 and multiply; a nation and a company of nations
04:34 shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
04:38 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee
04:41 I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
04:44 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
04:48 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him,
04:52 even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon,
04:55 and he poured oil thereon. And Jacob called the name
04:59 of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
05:01 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way
05:05 to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed,
05:08 and she had hard labour. And it came to pass,
05:11 when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her,
05:15 Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
05:17 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, for she died -
05:23 that she called his name Benoni:
05:26 but his father called him Benjamin.
05:29 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath,
05:33 which is Bethlehem. And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave:
05:37 that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
05:40 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower
05:44 of Edar. And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land,
05:48 that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine:
05:52 and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.
05:56 The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon,
06:01 and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar. and Zebulun:
06:04 The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin.
06:08 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan and Naphtali.
06:13 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher:
06:18 these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him
06:21 in Padanaram. And Jacob came unto Isaac his father
06:26 unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron,
06:29 where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
06:31 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.
06:35 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered
06:38 unto his people, being old and full of days;
06:42 and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
06:46 As I'm looking here at chapter 36, I see that we have a lot
06:50 more of the genealogy, so why don't we skip through,
06:54 and pick it up on chapter 37.
06:59 This is the King James Version.
07:03 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father
07:06 was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
07:09 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen
07:13 years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad
07:17 was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah,
07:20 his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father
07:23 their evil report. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all
07:28 his children, because he was the son of his old age:
07:31 and he made him a coat of many colours. And when his brethren
07:36 saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren,
07:38 they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
07:41 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren:
07:47 and they hated him yet the more. and he said unto them,
07:50 Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
07:53 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and lo,
07:57 my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and behold,
08:02 your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
08:05 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us?
08:10 or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?
08:12 And they hated him yet the more for his dreams,
08:15 and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream,
08:19 and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed
08:22 a dream more: and behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven
08:26 stars made obeisance to me. And he told it to his father,
08:30 and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said
08:34 unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed?
08:36 Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come
08:40 to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
08:42 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
08:47 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
08:51 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock
08:56 in Shechem? come, and I will I send thee unto them.
08:59 And he said to him, Here am I. And he said to him,
09:03 Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren,
09:06 and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.
09:09 So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron,
09:12 and he came to Shechem. And a certain man found him, and,
09:15 behold, ye was wandering in the field: and the man asked him,
09:18 saying, What seekest thou? And he said, I seek my brethren:
09:22 tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
09:25 And the man said, They are departed hence;
09:28 For I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan,
09:30 And Joseph went after his brethren and found them
09:34 in Dothan. And when they saw him afar off,
09:38 even before he came near unto them,
09:40 they conspired against him to slay him.
09:44 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
09:48 Come now therefore, and let us slay him,
09:50 and cast him into some pit, and we will say some evil beast hath
09:53 devoured him and we shall see what shall become
09:56 of his dreams. And Reuben heard it he delivered him
10:00 out of their hands and said, Let us not kill him.
10:03 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood,
10:06 but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness,
10:09 and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out
10:12 of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
10:14 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren,
10:18 that they stripped Joseph out of his coat,
10:21 his coat of many colours that was on him;
10:23 And they took him, and cast him into a pit:
10:26 and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
10:29 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes
10:33 and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came
10:37 from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm
10:41 and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
10:43 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it
10:47 if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
10:50 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites,
10:53 and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother
10:56 and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
11:00 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen:
11:03 and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit,
11:06 and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for 20 pieces
11:08 of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
11:11 And Reuben returned unto the pit and behold,
11:15 Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
11:19 and he returned unto his brethren, and said, the child
11:21 is not; and I, whither shall I go? And they took Joseph's
11:25 coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat
11:28 in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours
11:31 and brought it to their father; and said, This have we found:
11:35 know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. And he knew it
11:40 and said, It is my son's coat; and evil beast hath devoured
11:44 him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
11:47 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins,
11:52 and mourned for his son many days.
11:55 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort
11:59 him; but he refused to be comforted;
12:02 And he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son
12:06 mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
12:09 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer
12:15 of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.
12:17 We're reading now in Genesis, chapter 38,
12:21 This is the King James Version.
12:22 And it came to pass at that time that Judah went down
12:27 from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite,
12:32 whose name was Hirah. And Judah saw there a daughter
12:35 of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shuah;
12:38 and he took her, and went in unto her.
12:41 and she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
12:45 And she conceived again, and bare a son;
12:48 and she called his name Onan. And she yet again conceived,
12:51 and bare a son; and called his name Shelah:
12:53 And he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
12:56 And Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn,
13:00 whose name was Tamar. And Er Judah's firstborn was wicked
13:05 in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.
13:08 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife,
13:12 and marry her and raise up seed to thy brother.
13:14 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his;
13:18 and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife,
13:21 that he spilled it on the ground lest that he should give seed
13:24 to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the Lord
13:28 wherefore he slew him also. Then said Judah to Tamar
13:33 his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house,
13:37 till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure
13:42 he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and
13:46 dwelt in her father's house. And in the process of time
13:49 the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wife died;
13:52 and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep shearers
13:56 to Timnath, he and his friend, Hirah the Adullamite.
14:00 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law
14:04 goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
14:06 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her
14:10 with a veil, and wrapped herself and sat in an open place,
14:13 which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah
14:16 was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
14:20 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot;
14:24 because she had covered her face.
14:26 Please join me again as we continue the story next time.
14:30 Thank you and God bless you.
