00:15 Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:21 to read the word of God. When we were last together 00:24 reading in the book of Numbers and Israel had come up. 00:27 They were in the city of Kadesh and they send word to Edom 00:30 and asked if they can pass through his territory. 00:32 They said we won't drink your water. We'll stay on the highway 00:35 won't go through your fields, won't eat your vineyards 00:37 when we come through. And Edom refuses them passage. 00:40 And they send word again and say "Please if we take anything of 00:44 yours we'll pay for it. Please let us come through. " 00:46 That's where we are going to pick up our story today. 00:49 Before we start, Let's pray together. 00:50 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for these wonderful words 00:54 that will give us not just a life; but a wise life 00:59 and abundant life. May the lessons that You would have us 01:03 to learn, come into our hearts and be with us, and guide us 01:07 safely through the rest of our time here as we serve You 01:10 and each other. We love you so much and thank you for loving us 01:13 Amen. We are picking up in Numbers, chapter 20 01:18 starting with verse 20. This is the King James version. 01:21 And he said, thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out 01:26 against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 01:29 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his 01:33 border; wherefore Israel turned away from him. 01:36 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation 01:39 journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor. 01:42 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor by the 01:46 coast of the land of Edom, saying, Aaron shall be gathered 01:50 unto his people, for he shall not enter into the land 01:53 which I have given unto the children of Israel, 01:55 because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah. 01:59 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up unto mount Hor 02:04 and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar 02:09 his son and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people 02:12 and shall die there. And Moses did as the Lord commanded: 02:17 and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all 02:20 the congregation. And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments 02:23 and put them upon Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there 02:27 in the top of the mount. And Moses and Eleazar came down 02:31 from the mount. And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was 02:35 dead, they mourned for Aaron 30 days, even all the house of 02:39 Israel. We are continuing in the book of Numbers, chapter 21 02:44 and this is the King James version. 02:46 And when King Arad the Canaanite which dwelt in the south, heard 02:51 tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought 02:55 against Israel and took some of them prisoners. 02:57 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt 03:01 indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly 03:05 destroy their cities. And the Lord hearkened to the voice of 03:08 Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly 03:11 destroyed them and their cities. And he called the name of the 03:15 place, Hormah. And they journeyed from mount Hor 03:18 by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: 03:21 and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of 03:26 the way. And the people spake against God and against Moses, 03:30 Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the 03:34 wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any 03:37 water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 03:40 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people; and they bit 03:45 the people and much people of Israel died. 03:48 Therefore the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned 03:52 for we have spoken against the Lord and against thee. 03:55 Pray unto the Lord that He take away the serpents from us. 03:59 And Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said unto Moses, 04:03 Make thee a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole. And it shall 04:07 come to pass that every one that is bitten, when he 04:09 looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of Brass 04:15 and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent 04:17 had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, 04:21 he lived. And the children of Israel set forward and pitched 04:26 in Oboth,. And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at 04:30 Ijeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the 04:33 sunrising. From thence they removed and pitched in the 04:36 valley of Zared. From thence they removed 04:38 and pitched on the other side of Arnon, 04:40 which is in the wilderness that cometh out of 04:41 the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, 04:45 between Moab and the Amorites. Wherefore it is said in the book 04:49 of the wars of the Lord, what He did in the Red sea and in the 04:53 brooks of Arnon, and in the stream of the brooks 04:55 that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border 04:58 of Moab. And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well 05:02 whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people 05:05 together, and I will give them water. Then Israel sang this 05:10 song, Spring up, O well, sing ye unto it: The princes digged the 05:14 well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction 05:17 of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness 05:20 they went to Mattanah: And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from 05:25 Nahaliel to Bamoth: And from Bamoth in the valley that is in 05:29 the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward 05:33 Jeshimon. And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon, king of 05:37 the Amorites, saying, Let me pass through thy land: we will 05:41 not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not 05:45 drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the 05:48 king's highway, until we be past thy borders. And Sihon 05:53 would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon 05:57 gathered all his people together and went out against Israel into 06:00 the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel 06:04 and Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed 06:08 his land from Arnon unto Jabbok. even unto the children of Ammon: 06:13 for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 06:15 And Israel took all these cities and Israel dwelt in all 06:19 the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages 06:23 thereof. For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, the king of the 06:26 Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and 06:29 taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon. 06:32 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, 06:37 let the city of Sihon be built and prepared: For there is a 06:41 fire gone out of Heshbon and flame from the city of Sihon: 06:44 it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places 06:48 of Arnon. Woe to thee, Moab! Thou art undone, O people of 06:54 Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters 06:59 into captivity unto Sihon, king of the Amorites. 07:02 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, 07:06 and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth 07:11 unto Medeba. Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 07:15 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer and they took the villages 07:21 thereof and drove out the Amorites that were there. 07:23 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og, the 07:28 king of Baxhan went out against them, he, and all his people, 07:31 to the battle at Edrei. And the Lord said unto Moses, 07:35 Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, 07:39 and all his people, and his land and thou shalt do to him as thou 07:43 did unto Sihon, king of the Amorites, which dwelt at 07:46 Heshbon. So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, 07:51 until there was none left him alive and they possessed 07:55 his land. We're continuing to read in Numbers, 07:58 Chapter 22 and this is the King James version. 08:01 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the 08:05 plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho. 08:09 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done 08:14 to the Amorites. And Moab was sore afraid of the people, 08:17 because they were many: and Moab was distressed because 08:21 of the children of Israel. 08:22 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, 08:24 Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, 08:27 as the ox licketh up the grass of the field? And Balak the son 08:32 of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 08:35 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to 08:41 Pethor, which is be the river of the land of the children of his 08:43 people, to call him, saying, Behold there is a people come 08:47 out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, 08:50 and they abide over against me: Come now therefore, I pray thee, 08:55 curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: 08:59 peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that 09:03 I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom 09:06 thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed. 09:10 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with 09:15 the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto 09:19 Balaam and spake unto him the words of Balak. And he said unto 09:23 them lodge here this night and I will bring you word again 09:26 as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode 09:31 with Balaam. And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are 09:35 these with thee? And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of 09:40 Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, Behold there is 09:43 a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the 09:46 earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to 09:49 overcome them and drive them out. And God said unto Balaam, 09:53 Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: 09:57 for they are blessed. And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said 10:02 unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the Lord 10:06 refuses to give me leave to go with you. 10:08 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, 10:12 and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us. 10:14 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more 10:18 honorable than they. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, 10:22 Thus saith Balak, the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee 10:26 hinder thee from coming unto me for I will promote thee unto 10:30 very great honor, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: 10:33 Come therefore I pray thee, curse me this people. 10:36 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, 10:40 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I 10:43 cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God 10:46 to do less or more. Now therefore I pray you, tarry ye 10:50 also here this night that I may know what the Lord will say unto 10:53 me more. God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him 10:57 if the men come to call thee, rise up and go with them; 11:01 but yet, the word which I shall say unto thee, that 11:05 shalt thou do. And Balaam rose up in the morning, 11:09 and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. 11:11 And God's anger was kindled because he went: 11:15 And the angel of the Lord stood in the way for and adversary 11:18 against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, 11:20 and his two servants were with him. And the ass saw the angel 11:24 of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: 11:27 and the ass turned aside out of the way, 11:30 and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, 11:33 to turn her into the way. But the angel of the Lord stood in a 11:37 path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, 11:40 and a wall on that side. And when the ass saw the angel 11:44 of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, 11:46 and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: 11:48 and he smote her again. And the angel of the Lord went further, 11:53 and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn 11:57 either to the right hand or to the left. 11:59 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down 12:02 under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, 12:05 and he smote the ass with a staff. 12:08 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, 12:11 and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, 12:15 that thou hast smitten me these three times? 12:17 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: 12:22 I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I 12:24 kill thee. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, 12:30 upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine 12:33 unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? 12:36 And he said, Nay. Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, 12:41 and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, 12:44 and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, 12:49 and fell flat on his face. And the angel of the Lord 12:52 said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass 12:54 these three times? Behold I went out to withstand thee, 12:58 because thy way is perverse before me: 13:00 And the ass saw me and turned from me these 3 times. 13:03 unless she had turned from me, surely now also 13:07 I had slain thee, and saved her alive. 13:10 And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, 13:13 I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest 13:16 in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, 13:20 I will get me back again. And the angel of the Lord 13:23 said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word 13:26 that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. 13:29 So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. 13:32 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out 13:35 to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, 13:38 which is in the utmost coast. And Balak said unto Balaam, 13:42 Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? 13:45 Wherefore camest thou not unto me? 13:48 Am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor? 13:50 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: 13:54 have I now any power at all to say any thing? 13:58 the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak. 14:02 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth. 14:06 And Balak offered oxen and sheep and sent to Balaam, 14:10 and to the princes that were with him. 14:11 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, 14:15 and brought him up into the high places of Baal, 14:17 that thence he might see the utmost part of the people. 14:21 When we come back together again next time, we will continue to 14:25 read the story of Balaam. But you know as I read that story 14:28 it came to me that God uses even animals to proclaim His message. 14:33 And He needs to use each one of us in humbleness of heart. 14:36 Until we come together again, may God bless you 14:38 and keep you in His care. Goodbye. |
