00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words Are Life
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me 00:20 to read the word of God today. When we were last together 00:23 we were reading about the wanderings if Israel 00:24 in the desert for 40 years and now they are coming up to Canaan 00:28 in the land of promise that God is giving to them. 00:30 We'll pick up the story there, but before we start, 00:33 let's pray together. Dear Jesus we long to come home with You 00:38 and be in the land of heavenly promise forever in Your presence 00:41 until that day, thank you for these words that are life 00:47 and light to us. Please be with us now as we read them. 00:50 Teach us what You would have us to learn from these stories. 00:53 And thank you for loving us and blessing us. 00:57 We love You so much. Amen Reading in Numbers, 01:01 chapter 36, and when we left off the chief fathers 01:06 of the families of Gilead had come to Moses 01:08 to request that the inheritance of their brother, Zelophedad - 01:13 Zelophehad, be given to his daughters. 01:17 And that's where we are going to pick up the story 01:19 in Numbers 36, verse 3. And if they be married 01:25 to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel 01:28 then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance 01:31 of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe 01:35 whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken 01:38 from the lot of our inheritance. And when the jubilee 01:42 of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance 01:45 be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are 01:49 received: so shall their inheritance be taken away 01:52 from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers. 01:54 And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word 01:59 of the Lord, saying, the tribe of the sons of Joseph 02:02 hath said well. This is the thing which the Lord doth 02:06 command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, 02:10 Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family 02:14 of the tribe of their father shall they marry. 02:16 So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove 02:20 from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel 02:24 shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe 02:27 of his fathers. And every daughter, that possesseth 02:31 an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel 02:34 shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her 02:38 father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man 02:41 the inheritance of his fathers. Neither shall the inheritance 02:46 remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one 02:50 of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself 02:52 to his own inheritance. Even as the Lord commanded Moses, 02:57 so did the daughters of Zelophehad: 02:59 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, 03:04 the daughters of Zelophehad were married unto their father's 03:08 brother's sons: And they were married into the families 03:11 of the sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, 03:15 and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family 03:18 of their father. These are the commandments and the judgments, 03:21 which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses 03:24 unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab 03:27 by Jordan, near Jericho. 03:30 And now we're going to pick up in the book of Deuteronomy 03:34 chapter one, verse one, the King James Version 03:38 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel 03:42 on this side Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain over 03:46 against the Red sea, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, 03:49 And Hazeroth, and Dizahab. (There are 11 days' journey 03:55 from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.) 03:59 And it came to pass in the 40th year, in the 11th month, 04:03 on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the 04:07 children of Israel according unto all that the Lord had 04:09 given him in commandment unto them; After he had slain Sihon 04:14 the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og. 04:18 the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: 04:21 on this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare 04:27 this law, saying, The Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb, 04:31 saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: 04:34 Turn you, and take your journey and go to the mount 04:37 of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, 04:41 in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, 04:44 and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, 04:47 and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, 04:50 the river Euphrates. Behold, I have set the land before you: 04:55 go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers 04:59 Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their 05:02 seed after them. And I spake unto you at that time, saying, 05:06 I am not able to bear you myself alone: 05:09 The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, 05:13 ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. 05:16 (The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times 05:20 so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised 05:25 you!) How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, 05:29 and your burden, and your strife? 05:31 take you wise men, and understanding, and known 05:35 among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. 05:37 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken 05:41 is good for us to do. So I took the chief of your tribes, 05:44 wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, 05:47 captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, 05:50 and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, 05:53 and officers among your tribes. And I charged your judges 05:56 at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, 06:00 and judge righteously between every man and his brother, 06:03 and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall not respect 06:07 persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as 06:11 the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; 06:14 for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard 06:18 for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it. 06:22 And I commanded you at that time all the things 06:25 which you should do. And when we departed from Horeb, 06:28 we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, 06:30 which ye saw be the way of the mountain of the Amorites, 06:33 as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea 06:38 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain 06:41 of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us. 06:44 Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: 06:47 go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers 06:51 hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged. 06:54 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, 06:58 We will send men before us, and they shall search us out 07:02 the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, 07:05 and into what cities we shall come. And the saying pleased me 07:09 well, and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe: 07:11 And they turned and went up into the mountain, 07:14 and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out. 07:17 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, 07:20 and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, 07:23 and said, It is a good land which the Lord our God 07:26 doth give us. Notwithstanding ye would not go up, 07:30 but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God 07:34 and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord 07:38 hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, 07:41 to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 07:43 Whither shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged 07:47 our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; 07:50 the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we 07:55 have seen the sons of the Anakims there. 07:57 Then I said unto you, Dread not neither be afraid of them. 08:02 The Lord your God which goeth before you, he shall fight 08:07 for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt 08:10 before your eyes; and in the wilderness, 08:12 where thou hast seen how that the Lord thy God bare thee, 08:16 as a man doth bare his son, in all the way that ye went, 08:20 until ye came into this place. Yet in this thing ye did not 08:25 believe the Lord your God, who went in the way before you, 08:29 to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, 08:32 in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, 08:35 and in a cloud by day. And the Lord heard the voice 08:39 of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, 08:43 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil 08:46 generation see that good land, which I sware to give 08:50 unto your fathers, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 08:53 he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath 08:57 trodden upon, and to his children because he 09:00 hath wholly followed the Lord. Also the Lord was angry with me 09:05 for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither: 09:10 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, 09:14 he shall go in thither: encourage him: 09:18 for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. Moreover 09:23 your little ones which ye said should be a prey, 09:26 and your children, which in that day had no knowledge 09:28 between good and evil, they shall go in thither, 09:31 and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. 09:36 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey 09:40 into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea. 09:43 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against 09:47 the Lord, we will go up and fight, according to all 09:50 that the Lord our God commanded us. And when ye had girded 09:53 on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up 09:56 into the hill. And the Lord said unto me, Say unto them, 10:00 Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; 10:05 lest ye be smitten before your enemies. So I spake unto you; 10:11 and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment 10:14 of the Lord and went presumptuously up into the hill. 10:16 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against 10:20 you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, 10:24 even unto Hormah. And ye returned and wept 10:28 before the Lord; but the Lord would not hearken to your voice, 10:32 nor give ear unto you. So ye abode in Kadesh many days, 10:37 according unto the days that ye abode there. 10:40 Continuing in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 2 10:44 and this is the King James version. 10:46 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness 10:49 by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto me 10:52 and we compassed Mount Seir many days. And the Lord spake 10:57 unto me, saying, Ye have compassed this mountain 10:59 long enough: turn you northward and command thou the people 11:04 saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren 11:06 the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; 11:09 and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed 11:13 unto yourselves therefore: Meddle not with them; 11:16 for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot 11:21 breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau 11:24 for a possession. Ye shall buy meat of them for money, 11:28 that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for 11:31 money that ye may drink. For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee 11:35 in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking 11:39 through this great wilderness: these forty years 11:43 the Lord hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. 11:47 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, 11:52 which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, 11:55 and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the 11:59 wilderness of Moab. And the Lord said unto me, 12:01 Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them 12:05 in battle: for I will not give thee of their land 12:08 for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children 12:11 of Lot for a possession. The Emims dwelt therein 12:15 in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, 12:19 as the Anakims; which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims 12:23 but the Moabites call them Emims 12:25 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; 12:29 but the children of Esau succeeded them when they 12:31 had destroyed them from before them and dwelt in their stead; 12:34 as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord 12:37 gave unto them. Now rise up, said I, and get you over 12:41 the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered. 12:45 And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, 12:48 until we were come over the brook Zered, was 30 and 8 years; 12:53 until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out 12:57 from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them. 13:00 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, 13:04 to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed. 13:08 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed 13:11 and dead from among the people, that the Lord spake unto me, 13:15 saying, Thou are to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, 13:19 this day: And when thou comest nigh over against the children 13:23 of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: 13:26 for I will not give the of the land of the children of Ammon 13:29 any possession; because I have given it unto the children 13:32 of Lot for a possession. (That also was accounted a land of 13:36 giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites 13:39 cal them Zamzummims; a people great, and many, and tall, 13:43 as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; 13:46 and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: 13:50 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir 13:54 when he destroyed the Horems from before them; 13:56 and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead 13:58 even unto this day: And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, 14:02 even unto Assah, and Caphtorims, which came forth 14:07 out of Captor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.) 14:10 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: 14:15 behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, 14:19 king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, 14:23 and contend with him in battle. 14:26 Thank you for joining with me to read the Word of God today and 14:30 we'll pick up this wonderful story the next time 14:32 we're together. Goodbye. |
