00:18 Hello and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE
00:20 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are reading in the book of
00:22 1st Samuel. Saul has been appointed the first king
00:26 over Israel and the Philistines have come against Israel.
00:30 So the people have come together and they're very scared,
00:33 and they're waiting for Samuel the prophet to arrive,
00:36 but he doesn't arrive at the time that they're expecting
00:39 and so Saul takes it upon himself to offer a burnt
00:43 offering to the Lord. And then pretty much as soon as the
00:45 offering is finished, Samuel arrives and says to Saul,
00:48 What have you done? And so we're going to pick up the story
00:51 but before we start, let's pray together.
00:53 Dear Lord, please come and be with us now as we read your
00:58 word. Show us the lessons of these stories that you have
01:02 for each of us in our lives today; that we may serve you
01:06 better. We love you so much and thank you for loving us.
01:09 Amen. Picking up in 1st Samuel, chapter 13, with verse 12, and
01:16 Saul is answering Samuel's question: What have you done?
01:20 Therefore, said I, the Philistines will come down
01:24 now upon me to Gilgal and I have not made supplication
01:26 unto the Lord. I forced myself therefore and offered a burnt
01:30 offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly:
01:35 thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord
01:37 thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord
01:41 have established thy kingdom upon Israel forever.
01:43 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought
01:48 him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded
01:51 him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not
01:54 kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
01:56 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of
02:01 Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present
02:05 with him, about 600 men. And Saul, and Jonathan his son,
02:09 and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah
02:12 of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
02:15 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines
02:18 in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth
02:22 to Ophra unto the land of Shual: And another company turned
02:27 the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned
02:29 to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim
02:32 toward the wilderness. Now there was no smith found throughout
02:36 all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said,
02:38 Lest the Hebrews make them swords and spears:
02:40 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines,
02:43 to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe,
02:47 and his mattock. Yet they had a file for the mattocks,
02:50 and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes,
02:53 and to sharpen the goads. So it came to pass in the day of
02:57 battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found
03:00 in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan
03:03 but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
03:07 And the garrison of the Philistines went out
03:10 to the passage of Michmash.
03:12 We're continuing now, in 1st Samuel, chapter 14,
03:15 and this is the King James Version.
03:17 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul
03:22 said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come and let us
03:26 go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other
03:28 side. But he told not his father. And Saul tarried
03:33 in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree
03:36 which is in Migron: and the people that were with him
03:39 were about 600 men; and Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's
03:45 brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli,
03:48 the Lord's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod.
03:51 And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
03:54 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go
03:58 over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp
04:01 rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side:
04:05 and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other
04:08 Seneh. The forefront of the one was situate northward
04:13 over against Michmash, and the other southward over against
04:17 Gibeah. And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour,
04:21 Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these
04:24 uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us:
04:28 for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.
04:33 And his armour bearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine
04:37 heart. Turn thee; behold I am with thee according to thy heart
04:43 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over
04:47 unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
04:49 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you;
04:54 then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto
04:58 them. But if they say thus, Come up unto us: then we will go up:
05:04 for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be
05:08 a sign unto us. And both of them discovered themselves
05:12 unto the garrison of the Philistines: and
05:14 the Philistines said, Behold the Hebrews come forth
05:16 out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
05:18 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan
05:22 and his armour bearer, and said. Come up to us, and we will shew
05:25 you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armour bearer,
05:29 Come up after me: for the Lord hath delivered them
05:31 into the hand of Israel. And Jonathan climbed up upon
05:35 his hands and upon his feet, and his armour bearer after him:
05:39 and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour bearer slew
05:43 after him. And that first slaughter, which Jonathan
05:47 and his armour bearer made, was about 20 men, within as it were
05:51 an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
05:55 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among
05:58 all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers,
06:01 they also trembled, and the earth quaked:
06:03 so it was a very great trembling.
06:05 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked;
06:09 and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went
06:12 on beating down one another. Then said Saul unto the people
06:17 that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us.
06:20 And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armour
06:24 bearer were not there. And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither
06:29 the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with
06:32 the children of Israel. And it came to pass while Saul talked
06:36 unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the
06:39 Philistines went on and increased. And Saul said unto
06:44 the priest, Withdraw thine hand. And Saul and all
06:48 the people that were with him, assembled themselves,
06:50 and they came to the battle: and behold, every man's sword
06:54 was against his fellow, and there was a very great
06:56 discomfiture. Moreover the Hebrews that were with the
07:00 Philistines before that time, which went up with them into
07:04 the camp from the country round about, even they
07:07 also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul
07:09 and Jonathan. Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid
07:14 themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the
07:16 Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them
07:20 in the battle. So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle
07:25 passed over unto Bethaven. And the men of Israel
07:28 were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people,
07:32 Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening,
07:35 that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people
07:39 tasted any food. And all they of the land came to a wood; and
07:45 there was honey upon the ground. And when the people were come
07:48 into the wood, behold the honey dropped; but no man put his
07:52 hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
07:54 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people
07:59 with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod
08:02 that was in his hand and dipped it in an honey-comb.
08:05 and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
08:08 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly
08:13 charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that
08:16 eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
08:19 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see,
08:24 I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I
08:26 tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if haply
08:30 the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their
08:33 enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much
08:37 greater slaughter among the Philistines? And they smote
08:40 the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon:
08:44 and the people were very faint. And the people flew upon
08:48 the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them
08:52 on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
08:55 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin
08:59 against the Lord, in that they eat with the blood. And he said,
09:03 Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
09:07 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people,
09:11 and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox,
09:15 and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat;
09:18 and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood.
09:21 And all the people brought every man his ox with him
09:25 that night, and slew them there. And Saul built an altar
09:29 unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built
09:32 unto the Lord. And Saul said, Let us go down
09:35 after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning
09:38 light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said,
09:42 Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest,
09:47 Let us draw near hither unto God. And Saul asked counsel
09:52 of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou
09:56 deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not
10:00 that day. And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief
10:05 of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been
10:09 this day. For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel,
10:12 though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.
10:15 But there was not a man among all the people that answered him
10:19 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side,
10:24 and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.
10:27 And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
10:32 Therefore Saul said unto the Lord God of Israel,
10:35 Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken:
10:40 but the people escaped. And Saul said, Cast lots between me
10:45 and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken:
10:49 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done.
10:53 And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey
10:58 with the end of the rod that was in my hand, and lo, I must die.
11:02 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt
11:07 surely die, Jonathan. And the people said unto Saul,
11:11 Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation
11:15 in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not
11:19 one hair of his head fall to the ground: for he hath wrought
11:22 with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan,
11:26 that he died not. Then Saul went up from following
11:31 the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their
11:33 own place. So Saul took the kingdom over Israel,
11:37 and fought against all his enemies on every side,
11:39 against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and
11:42 against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the
11:45 Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself he vexed them.
11:49 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites,
11:52 and delivered Israel out of the hands of them
11:54 that spoiled them. Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui
12:00 and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these;
12:04 the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger
12:08 Michal: And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter
12:13 of Ahimaaz; and the name of the captain of his host
12:17 was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. And Kish
12:21 was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner
12:25 was the son of Abiel. And there was sore war against the
12:29 Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw
12:34 any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
12:39 We're continuing now in 1st Samuel, chapter 15,
12:45 this is the King James Version.
12:46 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee
12:52 to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore
12:56 hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.
12:59 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek
13:03 did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way,
13:06 when ye came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek,
13:11 and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not;
13:14 but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling,
13:19 ox and sheep, camel and ass. And Saul gathered the people
13:25 together, and numbered them in Telaim, 200, 0000 footmen,
13:29 and 10,000 men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek,
13:34 and laid wait in the valley. And Saul said unto the Kenites,
13:38 Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites,
13:42 lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness
13:45 to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.
13:48 So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
13:52 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest
13:58 to Shur, that is over against Egypt. And he took Agag
14:02 the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all
14:07 the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people
14:11 spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of
14:16 the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not
14:21 utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse,
14:25 that they destroyed utterly.
14:28 Thank you for being with me today; until we come together
14:32 again, may God keep you. Goodbye.
