00:16 Hello and Welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we're reading in the book of
00:20 1st Samuel. God, through Samuel has instructed king Saul
00:26 To go against the Amalakites and utterly destroy them,
00:30 every living thing. And Saul and his army go against
00:34 them but they spare the king, and they spare all of the good
00:39 and the best of the livestock. We're going to pick up their
00:42 story now. Before we do let's pray together. Dear God,
00:46 please forgive us when we've been like king Saul,
00:51 and not utterly obey Jesus, fully obey Jesus, willfully
00:55 disregarded some part of what you have asked us to do.
00:59 We ask you to cleanse our hearts, forgive our sins,
01:02 and come and give us your spirit that our obedience
01:06 may be to your glory. Be with us now as we read.
01:09 Thank you for loving us. Amen.
01:12 We're in 1st Samuel, and chapter 15, picking up with verse 10.
01:18 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,
01:23 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king:
01:26 for he is turned back from following me, and hath not
01:30 performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried
01:35 unto the Lord all night. And when Samuel rose early
01:39 to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying,
01:42 Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place
01:45 and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
01:49 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him,
01:53 Blest be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment
01:56 of the Lord. And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating
02:02 of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I
02:06 hear? And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites
02:12 for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen,
02:15 to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have
02:19 utterly destroyed. Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will
02:25 tell the what the Lord hath said to me this night.
02:28 And he said unto him, Say on. And Samuel said, When thou
02:34 wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head
02:38 of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king
02:42 over Israel? And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said
02:46 Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites,
02:50 and fight against them until they be consumed.
02:52 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord,
02:57 but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of
03:02 the Lord? And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed
03:07 the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord
03:11 sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have
03:14 utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people
03:18 took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things
03:22 which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the
03:26 Lord thy God in Gilgal. And Samuel said, Hath the Lord
03:31 as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
03:35 as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better
03:41 than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
03:46 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness
03:51 is as iniquity and Idolatry. Because thou hast rejected
03:57 the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being
04:02 king. And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned:
04:06 for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord,
04:09 and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their
04:12 voice. Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and
04:18 turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord. And Samuel
04:22 said unto Saul, I will not return with thee:
04:24 for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord
04:26 hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
04:30 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon
04:35 the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. And Samuel said unto him
04:39 The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day,
04:43 and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than
04:47 thou. And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent:
04:52 for he is not a man, that he should repent. Then he said,
04:56 I have sinned: yet honor me now, I pray thee, before the elders
05:00 of my people and before Israel, and turn again with me, that
05:03 I may worship the Lord thy God. So Samuel turned again after
05:08 Saul and Saul worshipped the Lord. Then said Samuel,
05:12 Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag
05:18 came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness
05:23 of death is past. And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made
05:28 women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women.
05:33 And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
05:37 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to
05:42 Gibeah of Saul. And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the
05:46 day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul:
05:51 and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
05:55 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 16,
05:59 and this is the King James Version.
06:01 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn
06:05 for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?
06:07 fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send the to Jesse
06:12 the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among
06:16 his sons. And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it,
06:22 he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee,
06:26 and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord. And call Jesse
06:30 to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do:
06:33 and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
06:37 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came
06:41 to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming,
06:45 and said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably:
06:50 I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves,
06:54 and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified
06:58 Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
07:01 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked
07:04 on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.
07:08 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance,
07:13 or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him:
07:17 for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the
07:22 outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
07:25 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel.
07:29 And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
07:33 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither
07:37 hath the Lord chosen this. Again Jesse made seven of his sons
07:41 to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse,
07:45 The Lord hath not chosen these. And Samuel said unto Jesse,
07:50 Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet
07:55 the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep.
07:57 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him:
08:00 for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent,
08:04 and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful
08:09 countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise,
08:14 anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil
08:20 and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit
08:23 of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.
08:27 So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. But the spirit of the
08:32 Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord
08:36 troubled him. And Saul's servants said unto him,
08:40 Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
08:44 Let our Lord now command thy servants, which are before thee,
08:49 to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp:
08:52 and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon
08:57 thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well
09:00 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can
09:05 play well, and bring him to me. Then answered one of the
09:08 servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse
09:11 the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing,
09:14 and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent
09:18 in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
09:22 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me
09:27 David thy son, which is with the sheep. And Jesse took an ass
09:33 laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent
09:36 them by David his son unto Saul. And David came to Saul,
09:40 and stood before him: and he loved him greatly;
09:43 and he became his armour bearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying,
09:49 Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found
09:53 favor in my sight. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit
09:57 from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played
10:02 with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well,
10:05 and the evil spirit departed from him.
10:08 We're continuing to read in 1st Samuel, chapter 17,
10:13 and this is the King James Version.
10:14 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle,
10:20 and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth
10:24 to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah,
10:27 in Ephesdammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered
10:32 together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the
10:36 battle in array against the Philistines. And the Philistines
10:39 stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain
10:43 on the other side, and there was a valley between them.
10:46 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the
10:50 Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was 6 cubits
10:55 and a span. And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he
10:59 was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was
11:02 5,000 shekels of brass. And he had greaves of brass upon his
11:08 legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
11:11 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam:
11:14 and his spear's head weighed 600 shekels of iron:
11:18 and one bearing a shield went before him. And he stood and
11:23 cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye
11:27 come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine,
11:32 and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him
11:35 come down to me. If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me
11:40 then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him,
11:45 and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
11:50 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day;
11:55 give me a man, that we may fight together.
11:58 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine,
12:02 they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. Now David was the son
12:08 of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse;
12:12 and he had 8 sons: and the man went among men for an old man
12:16 in the days of Saul. And the 3 eldest sons of Jesse went and
12:21 followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his 3 sons
12:24 that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next
12:29 unto them Abinadab, and the third Shammah. And David was
12:33 the youngest: and the 3 eldest followed Saul. But David went
12:38 and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
12:41 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening,
12:45 and presented himself 40 days. And Jesse said unto David his
12:50 son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn,
12:54 and these 10 loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
12:57 and carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their
13:01 thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their
13:05 pledge. Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in
13:10 the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. And David
13:13 rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep
13:15 with a keeper, and took and went, as Jesse had commanded
13:18 him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to
13:22 fight, and shouted for the battle. For Israel and the
13:26 Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
13:29 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper
13:32 of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted
13:35 his brethren. And as he talked with them, behold, there came up
13:39 the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name,
13:43 out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake
13:46 according to the same words: and David heard them.
13:49 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him,
13:52 and were sore afraid. And the men of Israel said, Have ye
13:56 seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he
13:59 come up? and it shall be, that the man who killeth him,
14:02 the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him
14:05 his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
14:08 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying,
14:12 What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine,
14:15 and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this
14:18 uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies
14:22 of the living God? - Thank you for being with me to read today.
14:26 We'll pick up the story of David and Goliath next time
14:29 and until then, may God keep us secure in His love,
14:32 and in His way. Goodbye.
