00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading to day in the book of 00:20 1st Samuel, the story of David and Goliath. The armies of the 00:24 Philistines and the armies of the Israelites are camped and 00:27 facing each other day by day. The great giant Goliath comes 00:32 out and taunts Israel-challenges them. And David's three older 00:36 brothers are serving in the army of Saul and he goes 00:39 to visit them and he hears Goliath, and he asks the people, 00:42 Why should this man, this uncircumcised man, challenge 00:47 the living God? and what shall be done to the man who goes 00:50 up against him? We'll pick up the story, but Let's pray first. 00:53 Dear Lord, as we face the issues in our lives that seem like 00:59 giant problems to us, may we learn a lesson from David's 01:03 faith in you and know that the living God has the answers that 01:07 we need. Please send your Spirit now as we read to show you the 01:11 answers you have for us today. We love you so much, and 01:14 thank you for loving us. Amen. 01:16 Picking up the story in first Samuel, chapter 17, verse 27, 01:20 this is the King James Version. The people answered him after 01:24 this manner saying, so shall it be done unto the man 01:27 that killeth him: and Eliab, the oldest brother, heard 01:32 when he spake unto the men. And Eliab's anger was kindled 01:35 against David. And he said, Why camest thou down hither? 01:38 And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the 01:41 wilderness? I know thy pride and naughtiness of thy heart; 01:44 for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 01:47 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 01:51 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the 01:55 same manner: and the people answered him again after the 01:57 former manner. And when the words were heard which David 02:01 spake, they rehearsed them before Saul and he sent for him. 02:05 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; 02:11 Thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 02:14 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this 02:18 Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, 02:21 and he a man of war from his youth. And David said unto Saul, 02:26 Thy servant kept his father's sheep and there came a lion 02:29 and a bear and took a lamb out of the flock, and I went out 02:33 after him and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth. 02:36 And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, 02:39 and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion 02:43 and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine 02:47 shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the 02:52 living God. David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out 02:57 of paw of the lion, & out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver 03:01 me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto 03:05 David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. And Saul armed David 03:10 with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; 03:14 also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword 03:17 upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. 03:21 And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; 03:24 for I have not proved them. And David took them off. 03:28 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth 03:32 stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag 03:35 which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: 03:39 and he drew near to the Philistine. 03:42 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; 03:46 And the man that bear the shield went before him. 03:48 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, 03:51 he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of 03:56 a fair countenance. And the Philistine said unto David, 03:59 Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? 04:03 And the Philistine cursed David by his Gods. And the Philistine 04:08 said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the 04:10 fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 04:12 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me 04:17 with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I am come 04:23 to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies 04:27 of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord 04:31 deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take 04:35 thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the 04:37 host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, 04:41 and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth 04:43 may know that there is a God in Israel. 04:47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not 04:52 with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, 04:56 and he will give you into our hands. 04:59 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came 05:03 and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran 05:07 toward the army to meet the Philistine. And David put his 05:11 hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote 05:16 the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his 05:20 forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 05:22 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with 05:27 a stone, and smote the Philistine and slew him; 05:30 but there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David 05:34 ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, 05:37 and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, 05:40 and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw 05:45 their champion was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel 05:48 and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, 05:52 until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. 05:55 And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the 05:58 way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 06:01 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after 06:05 the Philistines and they spoiled their tents. 06:07 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to 06:10 Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. And when Saul saw 06:16 David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, 06:20 the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? 06:23 And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 06:28 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is. 06:32 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, 06:36 Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head 06:39 of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, 06:42 Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, 06:46 I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite. 06:49 We're continuing to read in 1st Samuel, chapter 18, 06:53 This is the King James Version. And it came to pass, when he 06:57 had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of 07:00 Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him 07:04 as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him 07:08 go no more home to his father's house. Then Jonathan and David 07:13 made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 07:16 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and 07:20 gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, 07:23 and to his bow, and to his girdle. And David went out 07:27 whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: 07:31 And Saul set him over the men pf war, and he was accepted 07:35 in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's 07:38 servants. And it came to pass as they came, when David was 07:42 returned from the slaughter of the Philistines, that the women 07:46 came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, 07:49 to meet king Saul, with tabrets with joy, and with instruments 07:53 of music. And the women answered one another 07:55 as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, 07:59 and David his ten thousands. And Saul was very wroth, 08:04 and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed 08:09 unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed 08:13 but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? 08:17 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. 08:22 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit 08:26 from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of 08:29 of the house; and David played with his hand as at other times: 08:33 and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. And Saul cast 08:36 the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall 08:40 with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. 08:44 And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, 08:48 and was departed from Saul. Therefore Saul removed him 08:53 from him, and made him a captain over a thousand; and he went out 08:56 and came in before the people. And David behaved himself wisely 09:01 in all his ways; and the Lord was with him. Wherefore 09:06 when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, 09:09 he was afraid of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, 09:13 because he went out and came in before them. And Saul said to 09:17 David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee 09:22 to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord's 09:26 battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, 09:30 but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him. 09:32 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, 09:37 or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law 09:40 to the king? But it came to pass at the time when Merab, 09:45 Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, 09:47 that she was given unto Adriel, the Meholathite to wife. 09:52 And Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David: and they told Saul 09:56 and the thing pleased him. And Saul said, I will give him her, 09:59 that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the 10:03 Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, 10:07 Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain. 10:11 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David 10:15 secretly, and say, Behold the king hath delight in thee, 10:19 and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's 10:22 son in law. And Saul's servants spake these words in the ears of 10:27 David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be 10:32 a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, 10:36 and lightly esteemed? And the servants of Saul told him, 10:40 saying, On this manner spake David. And Saul said, 10:45 Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, 10:49 but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of 10:52 the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall 10:57 by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told 11:01 David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's 11:04 son in law: and the days were not expired. Wherefore David 11:08 arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines 11:11 two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, 11:15 and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be 11:18 the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter 11:22 to wife. And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, 11:27 and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him. 11:30 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became 11:34 David's enemy continually. Then the princes of the 11:38 Philistines went forth, and it came to pass, after they went 11:41 forth, that David behaved himself more wisely 11:45 than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by 11:49 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 19, 11:53 and this is the King James Version. 11:54 And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, 12:00 that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son 12:04 delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, 12:08 Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee 12:12 take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret 12:15 place, and hide thyself: And I will go out and stand beside 12:19 my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune 12:23 with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. 12:28 And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, 12:32 and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, 12:35 against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, 12:38 and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: 12:42 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, 12:45 and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel: 12:48 thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then 12:51 wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David 12:55 without a cause? And Saul hearkened unto the voice of 12:59 Jonathan: And Saul sware, As the Lord liveth, he shall not be 13:03 slain. And Jonathan called David and Jonathan shewed him 13:07 all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, 13:10 and he was in his presence, as in times past. 13:14 And there was war again: and David went out, and fought 13:17 with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter 13:20 and they fled from him. And the evil spirit from the Lord 13:24 was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin 13:27 in his hand: and David played with his hand. 13:29 And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall 13:32 with the javelin; but he slipped away out of 13:35 Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: 13:38 and David fled, and escaped that night. Saul also sent messengers 13:43 unto David's house, to watch him and to slay him in the morning: 13:46 and Michal, David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not 13:50 thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be slain. 13:54 So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled 13:58 and escaped. And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, 14:01 and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it 14:04 with a cloth. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, 14:08 she said, He is sick. And Saul sent the messengers again 14:11 to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, 14:14 that I may slay him. And when the messengers were come in, 14:18 behold there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goat's 14:21 hair for his bolster. Thank you for being with me 14:24 today to read the word of God. We'll continue the story 14:27 of Saul and David. Until we come together again, 14:30 May God keep us all in His love. Goodbye. |
