00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to read together 00:21 in the book of 1 Samuel. We're in the story of David as he 00:26 flees from King Saul, who is trying to kill him. 00:29 Before we pick up the story let's pray together. 00:32 Dear Lord, thank you for saving us, for redeeming us and 00:40 we ask you to be our Master as well as our Savior. 00:45 May we, like David, commit our whole heart to you and turn not 00:50 from doing your words. Now teach us your word 00:53 in this time together. We love you and thank you for loving us. 00:56 Amen. We're reading in 1 Samuel, chapter 22, and beginning 01:01 with verse 9. Then answered Doeg the Edomite, 01:05 which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son 01:10 of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 01:13 And he inquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, 01:16 and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. 01:19 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, 01:23 the son of Ahitub. And all his father's house, the priests 01:27 that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 01:30 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, 01:36 Here I am, my lord. And Saul said unto him, Why have ye 01:40 conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou 01:44 hast given him bread, and a sword, and has inquired of God 01:47 for him that he should rise against me to lie in wait, 01:50 as at this day? Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, 01:54 And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is 01:59 the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honorable 02:02 in thine house? Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? 02:06 Be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing 02:10 unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: 02:13 for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. 02:16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou and 02:21 all thy father's house. And the king said unto the footmen 02:24 that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; 02:27 because their hand also is with David, and because they knew 02:30 when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of 02:33 the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the 02:36 priests of the Lord. And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, 02:41 and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, 02:44 and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore 02:50 and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. and Nob, the city 02:56 of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, 02:58 both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and 03:02 asses, and sheep with the edge of the sword. 03:05 And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, 03:09 named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 03:13 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain 03:17 the Lord's priests. And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it 03:21 that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, 03:23 that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death 03:27 of all the persons of thy father's house. 03:29 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life 03:34 seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. 03:38 We're continuing in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 23, 03:42 and this is the King James Version. 03:43 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight 03:48 against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors. 03:51 Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go and 03:56 smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David, Go, 03:59 and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah. And David's men 04:04 said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much 04:08 more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of 04:10 the Philistines? Then David inquired of the Lord yet again. 04:14 And the Lord answered him, and said, Arise go down to Keilah: 04:18 for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand. 04:21 So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the 04:26 Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them 04:29 with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants 04:33 of Keilah. And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of 04:37 Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down 04:41 with an ephod in his hand. And it was told Saul 04:45 that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath 04:50 delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering 04:53 into a town that hath gates and bars. And Saul called 04:57 all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, 05:01 to besiege David and his men. And David knew that Saul 05:05 secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to 05:08 Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod. 05:11 Then said David, O Lord God of Israel, thy servant hath 05:15 certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, 05:18 to destroy the city for my sake. Will the men of Keilah 05:22 deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down, 05:26 as thy servant hath heard? O Lord God of Israel, I beseech 05:30 thee, tell thy servant. And the Lord said, He will come down. 05:35 Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men 05:40 into the hand of Saul? And the Lord said, They will deliver 05:44 thee up. Then David and his men, which were about 600, arose 05:49 and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go 05:53 And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; 05:57 and he forbare to go forth. And David abode in the 06:01 wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain 06:05 in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, 06:09 but God delivered him not into his hand. And David saw 06:15 that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the 06:18 wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And Jonathan, Saul's son 06:23 arose and went to David into the wood, and strengthened 06:27 his hand in God. And he said unto him, Fear not: 06:31 for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou 06:35 shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; 06:38 and that also Saul my father knoweth. And they two 06:43 made a covenant before the Lord: and David abode 06:46 in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house. 06:48 Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, 06:53 Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds 06:56 in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south 07:00 of Jeshimon? Now therefore, O king, come down according to all 07:05 the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be 07:08 to deliver him into the king's hand. And Saul said, 07:13 Blessed be ye of the Lord; for ye have compassion on me. 07:16 Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place 07:20 where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: 07:23 for it is told me that he dealeth very subtly. 07:26 See therefore and take knowledge of all the lurking places where 07:30 he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, 07:34 and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in 07:38 the land that I will search him out throughout all 07:40 the thousands of Judah. And they arose, and went to Ziph 07:45 before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness 07:49 of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon. 07:52 Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: 07:57 wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode 08:00 in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he 08:04 pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 08:06 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David 08:09 and his men on that side of the mountain: and David 08:12 made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his 08:16 men compassed David and his men round about to take them. 08:19 But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and 08:23 come for the Philistines have invaded the land. 08:25 Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and 08:29 went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place 08:33 Selahammahlekoth. And David went up form thence, 08:38 and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi. 08:41 We're continuing to read in 1st Samuel, chapter 24. 08:45 This is the King James Version. 08:47 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following 08:53 the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, 08:57 David is in the wilderness of Engedi. Then Saul took 3,000 09:01 chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his 09:04 men upon the rocks of the wild goats. And he came to the 09:08 sheepcotes by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul 09:11 went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained 09:15 in the sides of the cave. And the men of David said unto him, 09:19 Behold, the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I 09:22 will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest 09:24 do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. 09:26 Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily 09:33 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, 09:37 because he had cut off Saul's skirt. And he said unto his men, 09:41 the Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, 09:46 the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, 09:49 seeing he is the anointed of the Lord. So David stayed 09:53 his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise 09:57 against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went 10:00 on his way. David also arose afterward, and went out of 10:04 the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. 10:08 And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face 10:14 to the earth, and bowed himself. And David said to Saul, 10:17 Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, 10:20 Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? Behold, this day thine eyes 10:25 have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee today 10:28 into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: 10:32 but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth 10:37 mine hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed. 10:40 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe 10:44 in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and 10:49 killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil 10:53 nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against 10:57 thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. 11:01 The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me 11:04 of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 11:08 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth 11:13 from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 11:16 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou 11:20 pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. The Lord therefore be 11:25 judge between me and thee, and see, an plead my cause, 11:29 and deliver me out of thine hand. And it came to pass, 11:33 when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, 11:36 that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? 11:41 And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. And he said to David, 11:45 Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, 11:50 whereas I have rewarded thee evil. And thou hast shewed 11:55 this day how that thou dealt well with me: forasmuch as 11:59 when the Lord had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst 12:03 me not. For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well 12:07 away? wherefore the Lord reward thee good for that thou hast 12:10 done unto me this day. And now, behold, I know well that thou 12:14 shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be 12:18 established in thine hand. Swear now therefore 12:21 unto me by the Lord, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after 12:24 me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my 12:28 father's house. And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; 12:33 but David and his men gat them up unto the hold. 12:38 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 25, 12:41 and this is the King James Version. 12:43 And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered 12:47 together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house 12:51 at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness 12:55 of Paran. And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions 12:59 were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had 3,000 13:03 sheep and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep 13:06 in Carmel. Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of 13:11 his wife was Abigail: and she was a woman of good 13:15 understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: 13:17 but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; 13:21 and he was of the house of Caleb. And David heard in the 13:26 wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep. And David sent out 13:29 ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up 13:32 to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name: 13:35 And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, 13:39 Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house and peace be 13:43 unto all that thou hast. And now I have heard that thou hast 13:48 shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them 13:51 not, neither was there aught missing unto them, all 13:55 the while they were in Carmel. Ask thy young men, and 13:58 they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour 14:01 in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, 14:05 whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy 14:08 son David. And when David's young men came, they spake 14:12 to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, 14:15 and ceased. And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, 14:19 who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many 14:22 servants now a days that break away every man from his master. 14:26 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I 14:29 have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, 14:31 whom I know not whence they be? |
