00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we are reading together in the book
00:22 of 2nd Samuel, the story of David and his reign as king
00:27 over Israel. But before we start to read, let's pray together.
00:30 Dear God, we want to ask you please, to send your Holy spirit
00:36 to our hearts to guide us in understanding of the truth
00:40 that we are about to read. Please may it bear fruit
00:44 to your glory. We love you so much and thank you for loving us
00:47 Amen. - Beginning in 2nd Samuel, chapter 6, verse 11
00:53 This is the King James Version.
00:55 And the Ark of the Lord continued in the house of
00:59 Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed
01:03 Obed-edom and all his household.
01:06 And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed
01:09 the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him,
01:12 because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up
01:16 the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of
01:20 David with gladness. And it was so, that when they that bare the
01:26 ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen
01:30 and fatlings. And David danced before the Lord with all his
01:34 might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
01:38 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of
01:42 the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.
01:45 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David,
01:48 Michal, Saul's daughter, looked through a window, and saw
01:51 king David leaping and dancing before the Lord;
01:55 and she despised him in her heart.
01:58 And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in
02:01 his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had
02:04 pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings
02:06 and peace offerings before the Lord. And as soon as David
02:10 had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace
02:13 offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts
02:17 And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole
02:21 multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one
02:25 a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of
02:28 wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
02:32 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal,
02:38 the daughter of Saul, came out to meet David, and said,
02:40 How glorious was the king of Israel today, who uncovered
02:44 himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants,
02:47 as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!
02:51 And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord,
02:55 which chose me before thy father and before all his house,
02:59 to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel:
03:03 therefore will I play before the Lord. And I will yet be more
03:08 vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight:
03:11 and of the maid servants which thou has spoken of,
03:13 of them shall I be had in honor.
03:16 Therefore the Michal, the daughter of Saul,
03:19 had no child unto the day of her death.
03:23 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 7,
03:26 this is the King James version.
03:27 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house,
03:32 and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies
03:35 that the king said unto Nathan the Prophet, See now,
03:40 I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within
03:44 curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in
03:50 thine heart; for the Lord is with thee. And it came to pass
03:53 that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,
03:57 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, shalt thou
04:02 build me an house for me to dwell in? Whereas I have not
04:05 dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the
04:08 children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day,
04:10 but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all the places
04:15 wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I
04:18 a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded
04:21 to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not
04:24 me and house of cedar? Now therefore so shalt thou say
04:29 unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts,
04:32 I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep,
04:37 to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
04:40 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest,
04:43 and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight,
04:46 and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great
04:51 men that are in the earth. Moreover I will appoint
04:54 a place for my people Israel, and will plant them that they
04:59 may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more;
05:02 neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more
05:06 as beforetime, and as since the time that I commanded judges
05:11 to be over my people Israel, and have caused the to rest
05:14 from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he
05:18 will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled,
05:21 and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed
05:26 after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will
05:30 establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name,
05:34 and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
05:37 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit
05:43 iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men,
05:46 and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy
05:49 shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul,
05:53 whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom
05:57 shall be established forever before thee. Thy throne
06:01 shall be established forever. According to all these words,
06:04 and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak
06:08 unto David. Then went king David in and sat before the Lord
06:14 and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house,
06:18 that thou hast brought me hitherto?
06:21 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God:
06:24 but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great
06:28 while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord God?
06:32 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God,
06:37 knowest thy servant. For thy word's sake, and according
06:41 to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things,
06:45 to make thy servant know them. Wherefore thou art great,
06:50 O Lord God, for there is none like thee, neither is there any
06:54 God beside thee, according to all that we have heard
06:56 with our ears. And what one nation in the earth is like thy
07:00 people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people
07:04 to himself and to make him a name, and to do for you
07:09 great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people,
07:12 which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations
07:15 and their gods? For thou hast comfirmed to thyself thy people
07:20 Israel to be a people unto thee forever: and thou, Lord
07:24 art become their God. And now, O Lord God, the word that thou
07:30 hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his
07:33 house, establish it forever, and do as thou hast said.
07:37 And let thy name be magnified forever, saying, The Lord
07:41 of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant
07:46 David be established before thee. For thou, O Lord of hosts,
07:50 God of Israel, has revealed to thy servant, saying, I will
07:54 build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his
07:58 heart to pray this prayer unto thee. And now, O Lord God,
08:02 thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast
08:07 promised this goodness unto thy servant: Therefore now let it
08:12 please thee to bless the house of the servant, that it may
08:16 continue forever before thee: for thou, O Lord God,
08:20 hath spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house
08:24 of thy servant be blessed forever.
08:27 We're reading in 2nd Samuel, chapter 8,
08:31 This is the King James Version.
08:32 And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines
08:37 and subdued them: and David took Methegammah
08:42 out of the hand of the Philistines. And he smote Moab,
08:45 and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground;
08:48 even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one
08:52 full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David's
08:57 servants, and brought gifts. David smote also Hadadezer,
09:02 the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover
09:06 his border at the river Euphrates.
09:08 And David took from him a thousand chariots,
09:11 and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen:
09:13 and David hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved of them
09:17 for an hundred chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus
09:22 came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the
09:27 Syrians two and twenty thousand men. Then David put garrisons
09:32 in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants
09:35 to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David
09:39 withersoever he went. And David took the shields of gold that
09:44 were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them
09:47 to Jerusalem. And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of
09:52 Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.
09:55 When Toi, King of Hamath, heard that David had smitten all the
10:00 host of Hadadezer, then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David,
10:05 to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against
10:08 Hadadezer, and had smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi.
10:12 And Joram brought with him vessels of silver and vessels
10:16 of gold and vessels of brass: Which also king David did
10:19 dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had
10:23 dedicated of all nations which he subdued; of Syria,
10:25 and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines
10:29 and of Amalek, and of the spoil Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of
10:33 Zobah. And David gat him a name when he returned from
10:37 smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being 18,000 men
10:42 and he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he
10:46 garrisons, and all they of Edom became David's servants.
10:50 And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.
10:54 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed
10:58 judgment and justice unto all his people.
11:01 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat
11:07 the son of Ahilud was recorder; and Zadok the son of Ahitub,
11:12 and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests;
11:16 And Seraiah was the scribe; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada
11:21 was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites;
11:24 and David's sons were chief rulers.
11:27 Continuing now in 2nd Samuel, chapter 9
11:31 And this is the King James Version
11:32 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house
11:39 of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?
11:43 And there was of the house of Saul a servant,
11:47 whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David,
11:51 the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba?
11:53 And he said, Thy servant is he. And the king said,
11:57 Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew
12:01 the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king,
12:05 Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.
12:10 And the king said unto him, Where is he?
12:13 And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of
12:17 Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar.
12:21 Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house
12:24 of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar.
12:27 Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul,
12:31 was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence.
12:35 And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered,
12:40 Behold thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not:
12:44 for I will surely shew the kindness for Jonathan
12:48 thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land
12:51 of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table
12:54 continually. And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy
12:58 servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog
13:01 as I am? Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant,
13:05 and said unto him, I have given unto thy master's son all that
13:10 pertained to Saul and to all his house. Thou therefore,
13:13 and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and
13:17 thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have
13:20 food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread
13:24 always at my table. Now Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants.
13:29 Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord
13:34 the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do
13:37 As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table
13:41 as one of the king's sons. And Mephibosheth had a young son,
13:46 whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba
13:51 were servants unto Mephibosheth.
13:52 So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat
13:57 continually at the King's table; and was lame on both his feet.
14:01 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, Chapter 10.
14:05 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of
14:09 Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
14:13 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun
14:16 the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me.
14:19 And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants
14:22 for his father. And David's servants came into the land
14:25 of the children of Ammon.
14:27 Thank you for coming apart with me to read the word of God.
14:31 Until next time, may God keep us all in His care. Goodbye.
