00:15 Hello and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we'll be reading from 2nd Samuel.
00:22 Before we start, let's pray together. Our Father in heaven,
00:26 thank you for preserving each of us to come to this moment to sit
00:31 in your presence and to hear your word. Help us to understand
00:35 what you would have us to take from these stories, and help us
00:39 to be fitted for service to you and to each other to your glory.
00:44 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:48 We're reading in 2nd Samuel, chapter 13, verse 1 and
00:53 This is the King James Version.
00:54 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David
01:00 had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of
01:05 David, loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick
01:10 for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought
01:14 it hard for him to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend,
01:18 whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother:
01:22 and Jonadab was a very subtil man. And he said unto him,
01:27 Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day?
01:30 wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar,
01:34 my brother Absalom's sister. And Jonadab said unto him,
01:38 Lay thee down on thy bed and make thyself sick: and when thy
01:43 father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee,
01:47 let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat
01:50 in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
01:54 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king
01:59 was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let
02:03 Tamar my sister come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight
02:07 that I might eat at her hand. Then David sent home to Tamar,
02:12 saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house and dress him meat
02:16 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house and he was laid
02:20 down. And she took flour and kneaded it and made cakes
02:23 in his sight and did bake the cakes. And she took a pan and
02:27 poured them out before him. But he refused to eat. And Amnon
02:32 said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man
02:36 from him. And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the
02:41 chamber that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes
02:46 which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon
02:49 her brother. And when she had brought them unto him to eat,
02:53 he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me,
02:57 my sister. And she answered him, Nay my brother, do not force me;
03:01 for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou
03:05 this folly. And I, whither shall cause my shame to go?
03:10 and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel.
03:14 Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king;
03:17 for he will not withhold me from thee. Howbeit he would not
03:21 hearken unto her voice: but being stronger than she,
03:25 forced her, and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her exceedingly
03:31 so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the
03:34 love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise,
03:38 be gone. And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil
03:44 in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst
03:46 unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.
03:49 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said,
03:53 Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.
03:58 And she had a garment of divers colors upon her: for with such
04:03 robes were the king's daughters that were virgins appareled.
04:06 Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after
04:09 her. And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment
04:14 of divers colors that was on her and laid her hand on her head,
04:18 and went on crying. And Absalom her brother said unto her,
04:23 Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace,
04:28 my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing.
04:31 So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.
04:36 But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.
04:41 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor
04:46 bad: but Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister
04:51 Tamar. And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom
04:56 had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim:
05:01 and Absalom invited all the king's sons. And Absalom came
05:04 to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath
05:08 sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants
05:11 go with thy servant. And the king said to Absalom, Nay my son
05:17 let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee.
05:21 And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.
05:25 Then said Absalom, If not I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go
05:32 with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
05:36 But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's
05:40 sons go with him. Now Absalom had commanded his servants,
05:44 saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine,
05:47 and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not:
05:52 hath not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.
05:57 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had
06:01 commanded. Then all the king's sons arose and every man gat him
06:05 up upon his mule, and fled. And it came to pass, while they
06:09 were in the way that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom
06:13 has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them
06:16 left. Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on
06:21 the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent
06:25 and Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother answered and
06:30 said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the
06:34 young men, the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the
06:38 appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day
06:41 that he forced his sister Tamar. Now therefore let not my lord
06:46 the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the
06:48 king's sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead. But Absalom fled.
06:54 And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and
06:57 looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the
07:01 hillside behind him. And Jonadab said unto the king. Behold,
07:05 the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.
07:09 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking
07:13 that, behold, the king's sons came and lifted up their voice
07:17 and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.
07:23 But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud,
07:28 king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.
07:32 So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there 3 years.
07:36 And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom:
07:42 for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
07:46 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 14.
07:50 This is the King James Version.
07:51 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart
07:58 was toward Absalom. And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched
08:04 thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign
08:09 thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel,
08:14 and anoint not thyself with oil but be as a woman that had a
08:19 long time mourned for the dead. And come to the king, and speak
08:23 on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
08:28 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on
08:33 her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help O king
08:36 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered,
08:41 I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
08:44 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together
08:48 in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote
08:52 the other, and slew him. And, behold the whole family is risen
08:57 against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his
09:00 brother that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he
09:03 slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
09:07 quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my
09:10 husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
09:14 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house,
09:18 and I will give charge concerning thee.
09:20 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king,
09:25 the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king
09:29 and his throne be guiltless. And the king said, Whosoever
09:33 saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch
09:38 thee any more. Then said she, I pray thee, let the king
09:42 remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the
09:46 revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my
09:50 son. And he said, As the lord liveth, there shall not one hair
09:54 of thy son fall to the earth. Then the woman said, Let thine
09:59 handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king.
10:02 And he said, Say on. And the woman said, Wherefore then hast
10:08 thou thought such a thing against the people of God?
10:10 for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty,
10:14 in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.
10:17 For we must needs die and are as water spilt on the ground, which
10:22 cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any
10:25 person: yet doth he devise means that his banished be not
10:29 expelled from him. Now therefore that I am come to speak of this
10:34 thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made
10:37 me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the
10:41 king; it may be that the king will perform the request
10:44 of his handmaid. For the king will hear, to deliver
10:47 his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me
10:49 and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
10:53 Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall
10:57 now be comfortable for an angel of God, so is my lord the king
11:02 to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God
11:05 will be with thee. Then the king answered and said unto the
11:09 woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask
11:13 thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
11:17 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all
11:23 this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth,
11:27 my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left
11:31 from aught that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
11:35 Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of
11:38 thine handmaid: To fetch about this form of speech hath thy
11:42 servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according
11:47 to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things
11:49 that are in the earth. And the king said unto Joab, Behold now,
11:54 I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man
11:58 Absalom again. And Joab fell to the ground on his face,
12:02 and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, Today
12:06 thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight,
12:10 my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request
12:14 of his servant. So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought
12:19 Absalom to Jerusalem. And the king said, Let him turn to his
12:23 own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned
12:28 to his own house, and saw not the king's face.
12:31 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom
12:36 for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of
12:41 his head there was no blemish in him. And when he polled his
12:46 head, for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because
12:49 the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:
12:52 he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels after the king's
12:56 weight. And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one
13:01 daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair
13:06 countenance. So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem,
13:10 and saw not the king's face. Therefore Absalom sent for Joab,
13:15 to have sent him to the king; but he would no come to him:
13:18 and when he sent again the 2nd time, he would not come.
13:21 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is
13:27 near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire.
13:30 And Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Then Joab arose,
13:35 and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him,
13:38 Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
13:41 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying
13:45 Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say,
13:48 Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had been good for me
13:52 to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's
13:56 face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
14:00 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called
14:05 for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face
14:08 to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom
14:11 We're continuing with chapter fifteen, in 2nd Samuel.
14:15 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him
14:19 chariots and horses, and 50 men to run before him. And Absalom
14:23 rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate:
14:25 and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came
14:29 to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him,
14:32 and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of
14:35 one of the tribes of Israel.
