00:17 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading together in the book 00:22 of Second Samuel, the stories of the reign of King David, 00:26 Before we start, let's pray together. 00:28 Oh, God, our Father, please come and be with us now as we read 00:33 your words. Please teach us what you have for each one of to 00:37 learn here. You know what we need from you and we ask you 00:40 to please give it to us now as we sit here in your Presence. 00:43 We love you and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:46 When we were last together, we were reading in 2nd Samuel, 00:50 a list of some of the giants that the men of David slew. 00:53 We're going to pick up now in chapter 21, verse 22. These four 00:59 were born to the giant in Gath and fell by the hand of David, 01:04 and by the hand of his servants. We're continuing in 2nd Samuel, 01:08 chapter 22. This is the King James Version. 01:11 And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song 01:16 in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand 01:19 of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, 01:23 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 01:27 The God of my rock, in him will I trust: he is my shield, and 01:33 the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, 01:37 saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the 01:42 Lord, who is worthy to be praised. So shall I be saved 01:45 from mine enemies. When the waves of death compassed me, 01:49 the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; the sorrows of hell 01:54 compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; 01:56 in my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God: 02:01 and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter 02:05 into his ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; 02:09 the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth. 02:13 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and the fire out 02:17 of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. He bowed 02:22 the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet. 02:25 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon 02:29 the wings of the wind. And he made darkness pavilions round 02:33 about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies. 02:36 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled. 02:40 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his 02:44 voice. And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, 02:49 and discomfited them. And the channels of the sea appeared, 02:53 the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking 02:56 of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 02:59 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters; 03:05 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated 03:09 me: for they were too strong for me. They prevented me in the day 03:13 of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay. He brought me forth 03:19 also into a large place: he delivered me, because he 03:23 delighted in me. The Lord rewarded me according 03:26 to my righteousness: according to the cleaness of my hands 03:30 hath he recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord, 03:34 and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his 03:38 judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not 03:42 depart from them. I was also upright before him and have 03:46 kept myself from mine iniquity. Therefore the Lord hath 03:49 recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my 03:53 cleanness in his eye sight. With the merciful thou wilt shew 03:58 thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew 04:01 thy self upright. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; 04:06 and with the froward thou shalt shew thyself unsavoury. 04:09 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are 04:14 upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down. 04:18 For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten 04:23 my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God 04:28 have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect; 04:33 the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them 04:38 that trust in him. For who is God, save the Lord? 04:42 And who is a rock, save out God? God is my strength and power: 04:47 And he maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds' 04:53 feet: and setteth me upon my high places. 04:56 He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken 05:01 by mine arms. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy 05:06 salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great. 05:10 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet 05:14 did not slip. I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed 05:18 them; and turned not again until I had consumed them. 05:21 And I have consumed them, and wounded them, 05:24 and they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet. 05:29 For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: 05:32 them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me. 05:36 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, 05:39 that I might destroy them that hate me. They looked, 05:42 but there was none to save; even unto the Lord, but he answered 05:46 them not. Then did I beat them as small as the dust 05:49 of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, 05:52 and did spread them abroad. Thou also hast delivered me 05:56 from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of 06:00 the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me. 06:03 Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: 06:06 as soon as the hear, they shall be obedient unto me. 06:10 Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of 06:14 their close places. The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; 06:19 and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. 06:22 It is God that avengeth me, and it bringeth down the people 06:26 under me, and that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: 06:29 thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up 06:33 against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. 06:37 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among 06:41 the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. 06:45 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy 06:51 to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed forevermore. 06:55 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 23. 06:59 And this is the King James Version. 07:01 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse 07:07 said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed 07:09 of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, 07:12 The spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my 07:17 tongue. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, 07:21 He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. 07:25 And he shall be as the light of the morning when the sun riseth, 07:30 even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing 07:34 out of the earth by clear shining after rain. 07:38 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me 07:43 an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: 07:48 for this is all my salvation and all my desire, although he make 07:53 it not to grow. But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as 07:59 thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands: 08:02 But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron 08:05 and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned 08:08 with fire in the same place. These be the names of the mighty 08:12 men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, 08:16 chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: 08:20 he lift up his spear against 800 whom he slew at one time. 08:24 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, 08:28 one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied 08:31 the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, 08:34 and the men of Israel were gone away: He arose, and smote 08:37 the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave 08:40 unto the sword: and the Lord wrought a great victory that day 08:44 and the people returned after him only to spoil. 08:46 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. 08:50 And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, 08:52 where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people 08:56 fled from the Philistines. But he stood in the midst of the 08:59 ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: 09:01 and the Lord wrought a great victory. And 3 of the 30 chief 09:06 went down and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave 09:09 of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines pitched in the 09:11 valley of Rephaim. And David was then in an hold and the garrison 09:16 of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. And David longed, 09:20 and said, Oh that one would give me a drink of the water of the 09:23 well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! And the 3 mighty men 09:27 brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out 09:30 of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, 09:33 and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink 09:37 thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord. And he said, Be it far 09:42 from me, O Lord, that I should do this: is not this the blood 09:46 of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? 09:49 therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three 09:53 mighty men. And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of 09:57 Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his spear 10:00 against 300, and slew them, and had the name among three. 10:04 Was he not most honorable of 3? therefore he was their captain: 10:09 Howbeit he attained not unto the first three. And Benaiah the son 10:14 of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, 10:17 who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: 10:21 he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit 10:25 in time of snow: And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: 10:30 and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down 10:33 to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's 10:36 hand, and slew him with his own spear. These things did Benaiah 10:41 the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among three mighty men. 10:45 He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to 10:49 the first three. And David set him over his guard. 10:51 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty: 10:56 Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, Shammah the Harodite, 11:01 Elika the Harodite, Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh 11:06 the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anethothite, Mebunnai 11:12 the Hushathite, Zalmon the Ahohite, Mahrai the Netophathite 11:16 Heleb the son of Baanah, a Netophathite, Ittai the son of 11:21 Ribai out of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, 11:24 Benaiah the Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, 11:29 Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, 11:34 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 11:38 Ahammah the Hararite, Ahiram the son of Sharar the Hararite, 11:42 Eliphalet the son of Ahasbai, the son of Maachathite, 11:47 Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, Hezrai the Carmelite, 11:53 Paarai the Arbite, Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, 11:57 Bani the Gadite, Zelek the Ammonite, Nahari the Beerothite, 12:04 armour bearer to Joab the son of Zeruiah Ira an Ithrite, Gareb an 12:11 Ithrite, Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all. 12:16 Continuing with 2nd Samuel, chapter 24. 12:19 This is the King James Version. And again the anger of the Lord 12:24 was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to 12:28 say, Go number Israel and Judah. For the king said to Joab 12:32 the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all 12:36 the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number 12:40 ye the people, that I may know the number of the people. 12:43 And Joab said unto the king, Now the Lord thy God add unto the 12:49 people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold and that the eyes 12:53 of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king 12:57 delight in this thing? notwithstanding 13:00 the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against 13:03 the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the 13:06 host went out from the presence of the king to number the people 13:09 of Israel. And they passed over Jordan. They pitched in Aroer, 13:13 on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the 13:16 river of Gad, and toward Jazer: Then they came to Gilead, 13:20 and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, 13:24 and about to Zidon, and came to the strong hold of Tyre, 13:27 and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: 13:30 and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba. 13:34 So when they had gone through all the land, 13:36 they came to Jerusalem at the end of 9 months and 20 days. 13:40 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the 13:44 king and there were in Israel 800,000 valiant men 13:48 that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were 500,000 men. 13:52 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered 13:55 the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly 13:58 in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O lord, 14:02 take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done 14:05 very foolishly. For when David was up in the morning, 14:09 the word of the Lord came unto the prophet, Gad, David's seer, 14:12 saying, Go and say unto David, Thus saith the Lord, 14:15 I offer thee 3 things; choose thee one of them, 14:19 that I may do it unto thee. 14:21 When we come back together, we will finish reading 2nd Samuel. 14:26 and continue on. But until that time, may God keep us in his 14:30 love and care, and may his word bear fruit in our lives. Goodbye |
