00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading the story of King 00:21 David's reign over Israel, in the book of 2nd Samuel. 00:24 Before we continue, let's pray together. 00:27 Dear God, please come and be with us now in these next few 00:33 minutes as we hear your very words. May they go deep into 00:37 our hearts and be to us, life and light and bear fruit to your 00:41 glory. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:45 When we left off, the prophet Gad was to be sent to David 00:51 with a message from God. And we pick up now in 2nd Samuel, 00:54 chapter 24, verse 13, and this is the King James Version. 00:59 So Gad came to David and told him, and said unto him, 01:04 Shall 7 years of famine come unto thee in thy land? 01:08 or wilt thou flee 3 months before thine enemies, 01:13 while they pursue thee? or that there be 3 days' pestilence 01:18 in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return 01:23 to him that sent me. And David said unto Gad, I am in a great 01:28 strait: let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; 01:31 for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand 01:36 of man. So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel 01:40 from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died 01:43 of the people from Dan even to Beersheba 70,000 men. 01:48 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to 01:51 destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the 01:55 angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine 01:59 hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingplace 02:03 of Araunah, the Jebusite. And David spake unto the Lord 02:07 when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo I have 02:11 sinned, and I have done wickedly but these sheep, what have 02:15 they done? let thine hand I pray thee, be against me, and against 02:19 my father's house. And Gad came that day to David, and said unto 02:24 him, Go up, rear and altar unto the Lord 02:27 in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. And David, 02:33 according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded. 02:37 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on 02:41 toward him: and Araunah went out and bowed himself before the 02:44 king on his face upon the ground and Araunah said, Wherefore 02:49 is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy 02:53 the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, 02:56 that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Araunah 03:00 said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what 03:04 seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice 03:08 and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen 03:11 for wood. All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto 03:16 the king. And Araunah said unto the king. The Lord thy God 03:20 accept thee. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will 03:25 surely buy it of thee at a price. neither will I offer 03:28 burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which dost cost me 03:31 nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen 03:35 for 50 shekels of silver. And David built there an altar 03:40 unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 03:43 So the Lord was entreated for the land, and the plague 03:47 was stayed from Israel. We're continuing now 03:51 with the first book of Kings, chapter 1, 03:53 and this is the King James Version. 03:55 Now king David was old and stricken in years; 03:59 and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat. 04:02 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought 04:06 for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before 04:10 the king and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy 04:13 bosom, that my lord the king may get heat. So they sought 04:17 for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, 04:20 and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 04:26 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and 04:29 ministered to him: but the king knew her not. Then Adonijah, 04:34 the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: 04:38 and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and 50 men 04:42 to run before him. And his father had not displeased him 04:46 at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a 04:49 very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom. 04:52 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar 04:57 the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him. 05:00 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, 05:04 and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty 05:08 men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. 05:12 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone 05:18 of Zoheleth which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren 05:22 the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants: 05:25 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, 05:29 and Solomon his brother, he called not. Wherefore Nathan 05:34 spake unto Bathsheba the other of Solomon, saying, 05:37 Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith 05:41 doth reign, and David our Lord knoweth it not? 05:44 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, 05:48 that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son 05:52 Solomon. Go and get thee in unto the king David, and say 05:56 unto him, Didst not thou, my Lord, O king, swear unto thine 06:00 handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign 06:05 after me and he shall sit upon my throne? 06:07 why then doth Adonija reign? 06:09 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also 06:14 will come in after thee, and confirm thy words. 06:17 And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: 06:21 and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite 06:25 ministered unto the king. And Bathsheba bowed and did 06:29 obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou? 06:32 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God 06:37 unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall 06:40 reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. And now, behold, 06:45 Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest 06:50 it not: And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep 06:54 in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, 06:56 and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: 06:59 but Solomon thy servant hath he not called. And thou, my lord 07:04 O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou 07:08 shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord 07:11 the king after him. Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord 07:17 the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son 07:20 Solomon shall be counted offenders. 07:22 And lo, while she yet talked to the king, Nathan the prophet 07:26 also came in. And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan 07:30 the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, 07:33 he bowed himself before the king with his face 07:35 to the ground. And Nathan said, My lord, O king, 07:38 hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit 07:41 upon my throne? For he is gone down this day, and hath slain 07:46 oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all 07:50 the king's sons, and the captains of the host, 07:52 and Abiathar the priest; and behold, they eat and drink 07:55 before him, and say, God save king Adonijah. But me, even me 08:01 thy servant and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, 08:05 and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called. Is this thing 08:10 done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it 08:13 unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord 08:16 the king after him? Then king David answered and said, 08:20 Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, 08:23 and stood before the king. And the king sware, and said, 08:27 As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all 08:30 distress, even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, 08:34 saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, 08:38 and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I 08:42 certainly do this day. Then Bathsheba bowed with her face 08:48 to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, 08:50 Let my lord king David live for ever. And king David said, 08:55 Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah 08:58 the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king. 09:00 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants 09:04 of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own 09:08 mule, and bring him down to Gihon: and let Zadok the priest 09:12 and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: 09:16 and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon. 09:21 Then he shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon 09:24 my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: 09:28 and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah 09:33 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, 09:37 Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too. 09:41 As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he 09:45 with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne 09:48 of my lord king David. So Zadok the priest, and Nathan 09:54 the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the 09:58 Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down, and caused Solomon 10:00 to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. 10:04 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the 10:08 tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew 10:11 the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. 10:16 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped 10:19 with pipes, and rejoiced with a great joy, so that the earth 10:22 rent with the sound of them. And Adonijah and all the guests 10:26 that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. 10:29 And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, 10:31 Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar? 10:35 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar 10:39 the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; 10:42 for thou art a valiant man, and briniest good tidings. 10:45 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord 10:50 king David hath made Solomon king. And the king hath sent 10:55 with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah 10:58 the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, 11:02 and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule: 11:04 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him 11:08 king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, 11:12 so that the city rang again. This is the noise ye have heard. 11:15 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom. 11:18 And moreover the king's servants came to bless 11:21 our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon 11:24 better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy 11:27 throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed. 11:29 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of 11:33 Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, 11:36 mine eyes even seeing it. And all the guests that were with 11:41 Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way. 11:46 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, 11:51 and caught hold on the horns of the altar. And it was told 11:55 Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: 11:59 for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, 12:02 Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay 12:05 his servant with the sword. And Solomon said, If he will shew 12:10 himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall 12:13 to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, 12:16 he shall die. So king Solomon sent, and they brought him 12:21 down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself 12:23 to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house 12:27 We'll continue in the book of 1st Kings, chapter 2, 12:32 This is the King James Version. 12:33 Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die: 12:37 and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the 12:41 earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; 12:46 and keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, 12:50 to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, 12:53 and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, 12:56 that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, 12:59 and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: that the Lord may 13:03 continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, 13:06 If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me 13:11 in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, 13:15 there shall not fail thee, said he, a man on the throne 13:20 of Israel. Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of 13:25 Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the 13:28 hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa 13:33 the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war 13:37 in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was 13:41 about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. 13:44 Do therefore according to thy wisdom and let not his hoar head 13:49 go down to the grave in peace. But shew kindness unto the sons 13:55 of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at 13:59 thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of 14:03 Absalom thy brother. And behold, thou hast with thee Shimei 14:07 the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with 14:11 a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: 14:14 but he came down to me at Jordan and I sware to him by the Lord, 14:16 saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword. 14:20 Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise 14:24 man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; 14:26 but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood. 14:30 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city 14:34 of David. |
