00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today, to 00:22 read the word of God. When we were last together we were 00:24 reading in 1st Kings, chapter 4, about the reign of king Solomon 00:29 and an accounting of some of his staff and of his positions. 00:33 We're going to pick that up, but before do, let's pray together. 00:35 Dear God, thank you so much for these words, particularly 00:40 the story of king Solomon and his wisdom. May the lesson that 00:44 we read today give us some more of Your wisdom to guide us 00:49 in our life. Thank you for loving us. We love you so much. 00:52 Amen. - We're picking up in 1st Kings, chapter 4, verse 28. 00:58 Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries 01:03 brought they unto the place where the officers were, 01:06 every man according to his charge. And God gave Solomon 01:10 wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness 01:15 of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. 01:18 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children 01:22 of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 01:25 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Eremite, 01:29 and Human, and Chaco, and Dada, the sons of Manhole: 01:33 and his fame was in all nations round about. And he spake 01:37 3,000 proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. 01:41 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon 01:46 even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: 01:48 he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, 01:52 and of fishes. And there came of all people to hear the wisdom 01:56 of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard 02:00 of his wisdom. We're continuing now in 02:02 1st Kings chapter 5, and this is the King James Version. 02:05 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; 02:11 for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room 02:14 of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David. 02:18 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying, Thou knowest how that 02:22 David my father could not build an house unto the name 02:25 of the Lord his God for the wars which were about him 02:27 on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles 02:30 of his feet. But now the Lord my God hath given me rest 02:35 on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil 02:39 occurrent. And behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name 02:44 of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, 02:48 saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, 02:53 he shall build an house unto my name. Now therefore 02:57 command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; 03:02 and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee 03:06 will I give hire for thy servants according to 03:08 all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not 03:11 among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto Sidonians 03:16 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, 03:21 that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the Lord 03:25 this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great 03:28 people. And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, 03:32 I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: 03:35 and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, 03:39 and concerning timber of fir. My servants shall bring them down 03:43 from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea 03:48 in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, 03:50 and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt 03:53 receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire 03:55 in giving food for my household. So Hiram gave Solomon 03:59 cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire 04:03 and Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 measures of wheat for food 04:07 to his household, and 20 measures of pure oil: 04:10 thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year. 04:13 And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and 04:17 there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two 04:20 made a league together. And kind Solomon raised a levy 04:24 out of all Israel; and the levy was 30,000 men. 04:26 And he sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month by courses: 04:30 a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: 04:33 and Adoniram was over the levy. And Solomon had 04:37 threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, 04:39 and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains; Beside the 04:43 chief of Solomon's officers which were over the work, 04:45 three thousand and three hundred which ruled over the people 04:49 that wrought in the work. And the king commanded 04:52 and they brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, 04:55 to lay the foundation of the house. And Solomon's builders 05:00 and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: 05:04 so they prepared timber and stones to build the house. 05:07 We're continuing in 1st Kings, chapter 6, 05:10 This is the King James version. And it came to pass in the four 05:15 hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were 05:18 come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's 05:21 reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the 2nd month, 05:25 that he began to build the house of the Lord. And the house 05:29 which king Solomon built for the Lord, the length thereof was 05:33 threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, 05:36 and the height thereof thirty cubits. And the porch before 05:41 the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length 05:43 thereof, according to the breadth of the house; 05:45 and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house. 05:48 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights. 05:52 And against the wall of the house he built chambers 05:54 round about, against the walls of the house round about, 05:58 both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers 06:01 round about: The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, 06:05 and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven 06:09 cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made 06:13 narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be 06:16 fastened in the walls of the house. And the house, 06:19 when it was in building, was built of stone made ready 06:22 before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer 06:26 nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was 06:31 in building. The door for the middle chamber was in the right 06:35 side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the 06:38 middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third. 06:41 So he built the house, and finished it; and covered 06:46 the house with beams and boards of cedar. And then he built 06:50 chambers against all the house, five cubits high: 06:53 and they rested on the house with timber of cedar. 06:56 And the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying, Concerning 07:01 this house which thou are in building, if thou wilt walk 07:06 in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my 07:09 commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word 07:14 with thee, which I spake unto David thy father: And I will 07:18 dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake 07:21 my people Israel. So Solomon built the house and finished it. 07:25 And he built the walls of the house whithin with boards of 07:29 cedar, both the floor of the house, and walls of the ceiling: 07:32 and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered 07:36 the floor of the house with planks of fir and he built 07:39 20 cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor 07:42 and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them 07:46 for it within, even for the oracle, even for the most holy 07:49 place. And the house, that is the temple before it, was 07:52 40 cubits long. And the cedar of the house within was carved 07:56 with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no 08:00 stone seen. And the oracle he prepared in the house within, 08:05 to set there the ark of the covenant of the Lord. 08:08 And the oracle in the forepart was 20 cubits in length, 08:12 and 20 cubits in breadth, and 20 cubits in the height thereof: 08:16 and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar 08:21 which was of cedar. So Solomon overlaid the house within 08:25 with pure gold; and he made a partition by the chains of gold 08:30 before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold. 08:32 and the whole house he overlaid with gold until he had finished 08:36 all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle 08:40 he overlaid with gold. And within the oracle he made 08:45 two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high. 08:48 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits 08:52 the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the 08:55 one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were 10 cubits. 08:59 And the other cherub was 10 cubits: both the cherubims were 09:03 of one measure and one size. The height of the one cherub 09:06 was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub. 09:09 and he set the cherubims within the inner house; 09:12 and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, 09:15 so that the wings of the one touched the one wall, 09:18 and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; 09:20 and their wings touched one another in the midst 09:23 of the house. And he overlaid the cherubims with gold. 09:27 And he carved all the walls of the house round about 09:30 with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, 09:34 within and without. And the floor of the house he overlaid 09:38 with gold, within and without. And for the entering of the 09:42 oracle he made doors of olive tree: the lintel and side posts 09:47 were a fifth part of the wall. The two doors also were of 09:51 olive tree and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims 09:54 and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, 09:58 and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm 10:01 trees. So also made he for the door of the temple posts 10:05 of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall. And the two doors 10:10 were of fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, 10:14 and the two leaves of the other door were folding. 10:16 And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open flowers: 10:20 and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work. 10:23 And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone, 10:27 and a row of cedar beams. In the fourth year was the 10:32 foundation of the house of the Lord laid, in the month of Zif. 10:35 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul which is the 8th month 10:40 was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof 10:43 and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years 10:48 in building it. We're continuing in 1st Kings, chapter 7 10:52 This is the King James Version. 10:55 But Solomon was building his own house 13 years, and he finished 10:59 all his house. He built also the house of the forest of Lebanon; 11:03 the length thereof was an hundred cubits, 11:05 and the breadth thereof 50 cubits, 11:07 and the height thereof thirty cubits, upon four rows 11:10 of cedar pillars, with cedar beams upon the pillars. 11:13 And it was covered with cedar above upon the beams, 11:17 that lay on forty five pillars, fifteen in a row 11:20 And there were windows in three rows, and light was against 11:24 light in three ranks. And all the doors and posts were square, 11:29 with the windows: and light was against light in three ranks. 11:33 And he made a porch of pillars; the length thereof was 50 cubits 11:37 and the breadth thereof thirty cubits: and the porch was before 11:41 them: and the other pillars and the thick beam were before them. 11:45 Then he made a porch for the throne where he might judge, 11:48 even the porch of Judgment: and it was covered with cedar 11:52 from one side of the floor to the other. And his house 11:55 where he dwelt had another court within the porch, which was of 11:59 the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh's daughter, 12:04 whom he had taken to wife, like unto this porch. 12:07 All these were of costly stones according to the measures of 12:11 hewed stones, sawed with saws, within and without, even from 12:16 the foundation unto the coping, and so on the outside toward 12:19 the great court. And the foundation was of costly stones, 12:23 even great stones, stones of ten cubits, and stones of 8 cubits. 12:27 And above were costly stones, after the measures of hewed 12:31 stones and cedars. And the great court round about was with 12:36 three rows of hewed stones, and a row of cedar beams, 12:38 both for the inner court of the house of the Lord; 12:42 and for the porch of the house. And king Solomon sent 12:46 and fetched Hiram out of Tyre. He was a widow's son 12:49 of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was man of Tyre, 12:53 a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom 12:56 and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass: 13:00 And he came to king Solomon, and wrought all his work. 13:04 For he cast two pillars of brass of 18 cubits high apiece: 13:09 and a line of 12 cubits did compass either of them about, 13:13 and he made two chapiters of molten brass, to set upon 13:18 the tops of the pillars: the height of the one chapiter was 13:20 five cubits, and the height of the other chapiter 13:23 was five cubits. And nets of checker work, and wreaths of 13:27 chain work for the chapiters which were upon the top of the 13:30 pillars; 7 for the one chapiter and 7 for the other chapiter. 13:34 And he made the pillars, and 2 rows round about upon the 13:38 one network, to cover the chapiters that were upon 13:41 the top, with pomegranates: and so did he for the other chapiter 13:45 And the chapiters that were upon the top of the pillars were of 13:48 lily work in the porch 4 cubits, and the chapiters upon the 13:53 2 pillars had pomegranates also above, over against the belly 13:57 which was by the network; and the pomegranates were 200 in 14:01 rows round about upon the other chapiter. 14:04 And he set up the pillars in the porch of the temple: 14:07 and he set up the right pillar, and called the name thereof 14:10 Jachin: and he set up the left pillar, and called the name 14:14 thereof Boaz. And upon the top of the pillars was lily work: 14:18 so was the work of the pillars finished. And he made a molten 14:23 sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: 14:26 it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: 14:29 and a line of 30 cubits did compass it round about. 14:32 Thank you. Goodbye. |
