00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to continue reading
00:21 some stories from the reign of king Ahab and Queen Jezebel.
00:26 Before we begin, let's pray together.
00:28 Dear God please come now in a very special and close way
00:35 to give us a deeper understanding of what we
00:38 are reading. May we not just hear the word and pass over
00:42 those that may seem more difficult to comprehend, but
00:45 may the message that you have for each one of us
00:48 in these words go to our hearts and bear fruit to your glory.
00:52 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:55 When we were last together, we were reading about how Ahab
00:59 went to battle with Benhadad and defeated him; but then made
01:04 a covenant with him. And now a prophet of God has come to Ahab
01:08 with a message. And we are going to pick up reading
01:10 in 1st Kings, chapter 20, with verse 42,
01:14 and this is the King James Version.
01:15 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast
01:20 let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter
01:25 destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy
01:29 people for his people. And the king of Israel went to his house
01:34 heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
01:38 Continuing in 1st Kings, chapter 21.
01:41 and this is the King James Version.
01:43 And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth
01:47 the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel,
01:50 hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
01:54 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard,
01:58 that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near
02:02 unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard
02:06 than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth
02:11 of it in money. And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me,
02:16 that I should give the inheritance of my fathers
02:18 unto thee. And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased
02:24 because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite
02:26 had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee
02:30 the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon
02:33 his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
02:36 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said unto him, Why is thy
02:41 spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? And he said unto her,
02:46 Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite and said unto him
02:50 Give me thy vineyard for money or else if it please thee I will
02:53 give thee another vineyard for it. And he answered, I will not
02:56 give thee my vineyard. And Jezebel his wife said unto him,
03:01 Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel?
03:04 Arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry:
03:07 I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.
03:11 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his
03:16 seal and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles
03:21 that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. And she wrote
03:24 in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high
03:28 among the people: and set two men, sons of Belial, before him,
03:33 to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme
03:37 God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him,
03:41 that he may die. And the men of his city, even the elders and
03:45 the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city,
03:48 did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written
03:52 in the letters which she had sent unto them,
03:54 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.
03:58 And there came in two men, children of Belial,
04:02 and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him,
04:06 even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying,
04:09 Naboth did blaspheme God and the King. Then they carried him
04:13 forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones,
04:16 that he died. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying,
04:21 Naboth is stoned, and is dead. And it came to pass,
04:24 when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead,
04:28 that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise take possession of the vineyard
04:32 of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee
04:35 for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.
04:38 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead,
04:42 that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth
04:46 the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
04:48 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
04:52 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is
04:56 in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth,
05:00 whither he is gone down to possess it.
05:02 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord,
05:06 Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt
05:11 speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, In the place
05:15 where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood
05:20 even thine. And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me,
05:26 O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee; because thou
05:30 hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.
05:33 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy
05:37 posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against
05:42 the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel,
05:44 And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of
05:49 Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah,
05:53 for the provocation wherewith thou has provoked me to anger,
05:56 and made Israel to sin. And of Jezebel also spake the Lord,
06:02 saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.
06:06 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat;
06:10 and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.
06:14 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself
06:19 to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel
06:23 his wife stirred up. And he did very abominably in following
06:26 idols, according to all things as did the Amorites,
06:29 whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.
06:32 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent
06:37 his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted,
06:41 and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. And the word of the Lord
06:45 came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Seest thou how Ahab
06:50 humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself
06:54 before me, I will not bring the evil in his days:
06:57 but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house.
07:02 We're continuing to read in 1st Kings, chapter 22.
07:06 This is the King James Version.
07:08 And they continued three years without war between Syria and
07:13 Israel. And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat
07:17 the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.
07:21 And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that
07:26 Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not
07:30 out of the hand of the king of Syria? And he said unto
07:34 Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead?
07:39 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, I am as thou art
07:44 my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
07:49 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Inquire, I pray
07:54 thee, at the word of the Lord today. Then the king of Israel
07:58 gathered the prophets together, about 400 men, and said unto
08:02 them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle,
08:06 or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord
08:10 shall deliver it into the hand of the king. And Jehoshaphat
08:15 said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord besides,
08:20 that we might inquire of him? And the king of Israel said unto
08:24 Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah,
08:29 by whom we may inquire of the Lord: but I hate him;
08:32 for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.
08:36 And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so. Then the king
08:42 of Israel called an officer, and said, Hasten hither Micaiah
08:46 the son of Imlah. And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat
08:49 the king of Judah sat each on his throne, having put on their
08:53 robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria;
08:57 and all the prophets prophesied before them. And Zedekiah
09:01 the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said,
09:05 Thus saith the Lord, With these shalt thou push the Syrians,
09:08 until thou have consumed them. And all the prophets prophesied
09:12 so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper:
09:16 for the Lord shall deliver it into the king's hand.
09:19 And the messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto
09:24 him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare
09:28 good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray
09:33 thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is
09:36 good. And Micaiah said, As the Lord liveth, what the Lord saith
09:42 unto me, that will I speak. So he came to the king.
09:46 and the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against
09:50 Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear?
09:52 And he answered him, Go, and prosper: for the Lord shall
09:57 deliver it into the hand of the king. And the king said unto him
10:02 How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing
10:07 but that which is true in the name of the Lord?
10:09 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills,
10:16 as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the Lord said,
10:20 These have no master: let them return every man to his house
10:24 in peace. And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat,
10:29 Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good
10:31 concerning me, but evil? And he said, Hear thou therefore
10:35 the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on his throne,
10:39 and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right
10:42 hand and on his left. And the Lord said, Who shall persuade
10:46 Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead,
10:49 And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.
10:54 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord,
10:56 and said, I will persuade him. And the Lord said unto him
11:01 Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying
11:06 spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said,
11:10 Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth,
11:14 and do so. Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put
11:19 a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets,
11:22 and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee. But Zedekiah
11:27 the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek,
11:31 and said, Which way went the spirit of the Lord from me
11:34 to speak unto thee? And Micaiah said, Behold,
11:37 thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go into an inner
11:41 chamber to hide thyself. And the king of Israel said,
11:45 Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor
11:48 of the city, and to Joash the king's son; and say,
11:52 Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison,
11:55 and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of
11:57 affliction until I come in peace. And Micaiah said, If thou
12:02 return at all in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me.
12:05 And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you.
12:09 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah
12:13 went up to Ramoth-gilead. And the king of Israel said unto
12:18 Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into
12:21 the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel
12:26 disguised himself, and went into the battle.
12:30 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains
12:34 that had rule over his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small
12:37 nor great, save only with the king of Israel.
12:40 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw
12:44 Jehoshaphat, they said, Surely it is the king of Israel.
12:48 and they turned aside to fight against him: and Jehoshaphat
12:51 cried out. And it came to pass, when the captains
12:54 of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel,
12:57 that they turned back from pursuing him.
12:59 and a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king
13:04 of Israel between the joints of the harness: wherefore he said
13:07 unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry
13:10 me out of the host; for I am wounded.
13:12 And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up
13:15 in his chariot, against the Syrians, and died at even:
13:19 and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst
13:23 of the chariot. And there went a proclamation throughout the host
13:27 about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city,
13:30 and every man to his own country. So the king died,
13:33 and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king
13:36 in Samaria. And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria;
13:40 and the dogs licked up his blood and they washed his armor;
13:43 according unto the word of the Lord which he spake.
13:46 Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did,
13:50 and the ivory house which he made, and all the cities that
13:53 he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles
13:56 of the kings of Israel? So Ahab slept with his fathers;
14:00 and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
14:04 And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah
14:09 in the 4th year of Ahab king of Israel. Jehoshophat was thirty
14:13 and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty
14:16 and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah
14:20 the daughter of Shilhi. Thank you for joining with me
14:24 to read the story of Ahab, and Jezebel, and Elijah.
14:27 Until we're together again, may God keep us faithful and
14:31 serving Him all the days of our lives. Goodbye.
