00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today, 00:21 to continue reading in 1st Kings together. 00:24 Before we start, let's pray. Dear God, thank you so much 00:28 for your word that you have preserved for us, and given to 00:34 us now after all these centuries. Please send your 00:37 Holy Spirit to bring us a deeper understanding. We love you 00:41 so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:43 We're reading in 1st kings, chapter 22, beginning with 00:50 verse 43. And we're reading about King Jehoshaphat. 00:52 And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father. He turned not 00:58 aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the 01:01 Lord. Nevertheless the high places were not taken away; 01:06 for the people offered and and burnt incense yet in the 01:09 high places. And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of 01:12 Israel. Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, 01:15 and his might that he shewed, and how he warred, 01:18 are they not all written in the book of the chronicles 01:21 of the kings of Judah? And the remnant of the sodomites, 01:24 which remained in the days of his father, Asa, he took out 01:28 of the land. There was then no king in Edom: a deputy was king. 01:32 Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for 01:37 gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Eziongeber. 01:42 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, 01:46 Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. 01:49 But Jehoshaphat would not. And Jehoshaphat slept with his 01:54 fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David 01:57 his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead. 02:01 Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria 02:05 the 17th year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned 02:09 two years over Israel. And he did evil in the sight of 02:12 the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of 02:15 his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, 02:18 who made Israel to sin: For he served Baal, and worshipped him 02:22 and provoked to anger the Lord God of Israel, according to all 02:25 that his father had done. We're continuing now 02:30 in the book of 2nd Kings, chapter one. 02:32 This is the King James Version. Then Moab rebelled against 02:37 Israel after the death of Ahab. And Ahaziah fell down through 02:42 a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was 02:46 sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go inquire 02:50 of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this 02:54 disease. But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite 02:59 Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of 03:03 Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a 03:07 God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baalzebub, 03:10 the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saith the Lord, 03:13 Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone 03:16 up, but shalt surely die. and Elijah departed. And when the 03:22 messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye 03:26 now turned back? And they said unto him, There came a man up 03:30 to meet us, and said unto us, Go turn again unto the king 03:34 that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it not 03:38 because there is not a god in Israel, that thou sendest 03:40 to inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt 03:44 not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, 03:47 but shall surely die. And he said unto them, What manner of 03:52 man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these 03:55 words? And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt 04:00 with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, 04:03 It is Elijah the Tishbite. Then the king sent unto him a captain 04:08 of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and behold, 04:12 he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, 04:15 Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down. And Elijah 04:20 answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, 04:24 then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and 04:29 thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed 04:33 him and his fifty. Again also he sent unto him another captain 04:38 of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, 04:42 O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly. 04:45 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, 04:50 let fire come down from heaven and consume thee and thy fifty. 04:54 And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him 04:58 and his fifty. And he sent again a captain of the third fifty 05:03 with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and 05:06 came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him 05:11 and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, 05:16 and the life of these fifty, thy servants, be precious in thy 05:21 sight. Behold there came fire down from heaven, and burnt 05:24 up the two captains of the former fifties with their 50's: 05:27 therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight. 05:31 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, 05:34 Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went 05:39 down with him unto the king. And he said unto him, 05:43 Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers 05:47 to inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because 05:51 there is not God in Israel to inquire of his word? 05:54 therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou 05:58 art gone up, but shalt surely die. So he died according to the 06:03 word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned 06:06 in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of 06:09 Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son. 06:12 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, 06:16 are they not written in the book of the chronicles 06:19 of the kings of Israel? Continuing now in 2nd Kings 06:24 chapter 2, and this is the King James Version. 06:27 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into 06:32 heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha 06:35 from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I 06:40 pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. 06:43 And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul 06:48 liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. 06:52 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth 06:56 to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will 07:00 take away thy master from thy head today? And he said, Yea, 07:05 I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, 07:10 Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me 07:15 to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul 07:20 liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. 07:24 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to 07:28 Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord 07:32 will take away thy master from thy head today? 07:34 And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 07:39 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord 07:43 hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as 07:49 thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they 2 went on. 07:53 And 50 men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood 07:58 to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. 08:02 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, 08:06 and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, 08:10 so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, 08:14 when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, 08:17 Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from 08:21 thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of 08:27 thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard 08:32 thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from 08:36 thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 08:41 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that 08:47 behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, 08:51 and parted them both asunder; And Elijah went up by a 08:56 whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, 09:01 My father, my father the chariot of Israel, 09:04 and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: 09:08 And he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them 09:11 in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell 09:16 from him, and went back and stood by the bank of Jordan. 09:20 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, 09:24 and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God 09:27 of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, 09:31 they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. 09:35 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view 09:39 at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest 09:43 on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves 09:47 to the ground before him. And they said unto him, Behold now, 09:52 there be with thy servants 50 strong men; let them go, 09:56 we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure 09:59 the spirit of the Lord hath taken him up, and cast him 10:02 upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, 10:06 Ye shall not send. And when they urged him till he was ashamed, 10:11 he said, Send. They sent therefore 50 men; and they 10:15 sought 3 days, but found him not And when they had come again 10:19 to him, for he tarried at Jericho, he said unto them, 10:22 Did I not say unto you, Go not? And the men of the city said 10:26 unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city 10:29 is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is nought, 10:33 and the ground barren. And he said, Bring me a new cruse, 10:37 and put salt therein, and they brought it to him. And he went 10:41 forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt 10:44 in there, and said, Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these 10:47 waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren 10:52 land. So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the 10:56 saying of Elisha which he spake. And he went up from thence 11:00 unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth 11:04 little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto 11:07 him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 11:11 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them 11:14 in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears 11:18 out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 11:21 And he went up from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence 11:25 he returned to Samaria. Continuing now in the book of 11:31 2nd Kings, chapter 3, and this is the King James Version. 11:34 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel 11:40 in Samaria the 18th year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 11:43 and reigned 12 years. And he wrought evil in the sight of 11:48 the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: 11:51 for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made. 11:53 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of 11:57 Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. 12:01 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto 12:06 the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred 12:09 thousand rams, with the wool. But it came to pass, when Ahab 12:14 was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king 12:17 of Israel. And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, 12:21 and numbered all Israel. And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat 12:26 the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled 12:29 against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? 12:32 And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy 12:37 people, and my horses as thy horses. And he said, Which way 12:42 shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness 12:46 of Edom: So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, 12:49 and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of 7 days' 12:54 journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle 12:58 that followed them. And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the 13:02 Lord hath called these 3 kings together, to deliver them into 13:05 the hand of Moab! But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not 13:09 here a prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire of the Lord 13:12 by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and 13:16 said, Her is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water 13:20 on the hands of Elijah. And Jehoshaphat said, 13:24 The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel 13:27 and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom, went down to him. 13:31 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do 13:35 with thee? get thee to the prophets of the father, 13:38 and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel 13:41 said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these 3 kings 13:44 together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab. And Elisha 13:48 said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, 13:51 surely, were it not that I regard the presence of 13:55 Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, 13:58 nor see thee. But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, 14:04 when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon 14:07 him. And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full 14:13 of ditches, for thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, 14:17 neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled 14:21 with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, 14:25 and your beasts. Thank you for joining with me 14:29 today to read the word of God. Please join me again next time. 14:32 Goodbye. |
