00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me again today. 00:22 We're reading one of my favorite stories in the bible, 00:24 but before we continue, let's pray together. 00:26 Dear God, thank you so much for your blessings. Thank you 00:31 for the blessings you give us that we are aware of, 00:33 and for the many blessings that we don't notice 00:36 the way we should. Please open our eyes and make us more 00:39 grateful, and then help us to find ways to pass your blessing 00:42 on to others. We love you so much and thank you for loving us 00:45 Please be with us now as we read. Amen. 00:48 The story that we're reading is found in 2nd Kings. 00:51 And it's the story of how the king of Israel and the king of 00:54 Edom, and king Jehoshaphat went out to make war with the king of 00:59 Moab and they got lost in the desert. And as they were 01:02 lost with all of their armies, and all of their animals, 01:04 they called for a prophet of the Lord and Elisha came and said to 01:09 them, Make this valley full of ditches and you won't see 01:13 wind and you won't see rain, but valley is going to flow with 01:16 water. You're not going to see any natural reason for it, but 01:19 God is going to provide a blessing for you and he says 01:21 this is a small thing for the Lord. Let's continue reading, 01:24 2nd Kings, chapter 3, and beginning with verse 18. 01:29 This is the King James Version. And this is but a light thing 01:33 in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites 01:35 also into your hand. And ye shall smite every fenced city, 01:39 and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop 01:43 all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land 01:46 with stones. And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat 01:50 offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by 01:54 the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. 01:58 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come 02:01 up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to 02:04 put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border. 02:07 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone 02:11 upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water 02:14 on the other side as red as blood: And they said, 02:18 This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have 02:21 smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil. 02:24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose 02:28 up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: 02:32 but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their 02:36 country. And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece 02:39 of land cast every man his stone and filled it; and they stopped 02:43 all the wells of water and felled all the good trees: 02:45 only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof, howbeit 02:50 the slingers went about it, and smote it. And when the king of 02:53 Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him 02:58 700 men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king 03:02 of Edom: but they could not. Then he took his eldest son 03:06 that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a 03:08 burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation 03:12 against Israel and they departed from him, and returned to their 03:16 own land. Continuing in 2nd Kings, 03:19 chapter 4, this is the King James Version. 03:21 Now their cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons 03:28 of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband 03:32 is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: 03:36 and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons 03:40 to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do 03:44 for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? 03:47 And she said, Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, 03:51 save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad 03:57 of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. 04:01 and when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee 04:05 and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, 04:09 and thou shalt set aside that which is full. So she went from 04:14 him and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought 04:17 the vessels to her; and she poured out. And it came to pass, 04:21 when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, 04:23 bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a 04:27 vessel more and the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man 04:32 of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, 04:34 and live thou and thy children of the rest. 04:38 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, 04:43 where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. 04:47 And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither 04:51 to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, 04:56 I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us 05:00 continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, 05:04 on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, 05:08 and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh 05:12 to us, that he shall turn in thither. And it fell on a day, 05:16 that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, 05:19 and lay there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, 05:22 Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood 05:27 before him. And he said unto him, Say now unto her, 05:31 Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; 05:35 what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for 05:40 to the king, or to the captain of the host? 05:44 And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. And he said, 05:49 What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, 05:53 Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. And he said, 05:58 Call her. And when he had called her, 06:00 she stood in the door. And he said, About this season, 06:04 according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. 06:08 And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie 06:12 unto thine handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bare a son 06:17 at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the 06:20 time of life. And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, 06:25 that he went out to his father to the reapers. 06:27 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said 06:32 to a lad, Carry him to his mother. And when he had taken 06:36 him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees 06:39 till noon, and then died. And she went up, and laid him 06:44 on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, 06:47 and went out. And she called unto her husband, and said, 06:50 Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the 06:52 asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 06:56 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him today? 07:00 it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, 07:04 It shall be well. Then she saddled an ass, and said to 07:08 her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding 07:12 for me, except I bid thee. So she went and came unto the man 07:16 of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of 07:20 God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, 07:24 Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: Run now, 07:27 I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well 07:30 with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with 07:32 the child? And she answered, It is well. And when she came 07:37 to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: 07:41 but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God 07:45 said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: 07:48 and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 07:51 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, 07:57 Do not deceive me? Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, 08:01 and take my staff in thine hand and go thy way: if thou meet 08:04 and man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not 08:08 again, and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 08:12 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, 08:16 and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, 08:21 and followed her. And Gehazi passed on before them, 08:24 and laid the staff upon the face of the child; 08:26 but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went 08:30 again to meet him, and told him saying The child is not awakened 08:34 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was 08:38 dead, and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut 08:42 the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. 08:45 and he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth 08:49 upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands 08:52 upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; 08:55 and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, 09:00 and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched 09:04 himself upon him: and the child sneezed 7 times, and the child 09:09 opened his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this 09:13 Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto 09:17 him, he said, Take up they son. Then she went in, and fell at 09:22 his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, 09:26 and went out. And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a 09:31 dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting 09:34 before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, 09:39 and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. And one went 09:43 out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, 09:46 and gathered therof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred 09:51 them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 09:53 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, 09:57 as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, 10:00 and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. 10:03 And they could not eat thereof. But he said, Then bring meal. 10:08 and he cast it into the pot and he said, Pour out for the people 10:12 so that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot. 10:15 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought 10:20 the man of God bread of the firstfruits, 20 loaves of barley 10:25 and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, give 10:28 unto the people, that they may eat. And his servitor said, 10:33 What, should I set this before hundred men? He said again, 10:36 Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord, 10:40 They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. So he set it before 10:44 them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word 10:47 of the Lord. Continuing in 2nd Kings, 10:50 chapter 5. This is the King James Version. 10:52 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, 10:57 was a great man with his master and honorable, because by him 11:02 the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty 11:05 man in valor, but he was a leper. And the Syrians had gone 11:10 out by companies, and had brought away captive out of 11:13 the land of Israel a little maid and she waited on Naaman's wife. 11:17 And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the 11:22 prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his 11:25 leprosy. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and 11:29 thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. 11:31 And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter 11:36 unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him 11:40 ten talents of silver, and 6,000 pieces of gold, 11:43 and 10 changes of raiment. And he brought the letter 11:46 to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come 11:49 unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant 11:53 to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy. 11:56 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the 11:59 letter, that he rent his clothes and said, Am I God, to kill 12:03 and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a 12:06 man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see 12:09 how he seeketh a quarrel against me. And it was so, when Elisha 12:14 the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his 12:17 clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast 12:20 thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall 12:23 know that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his 12:28 horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house 12:31 of Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, 12:35 Go and wash in Jordan 7 times, and thy flesh shall come again 12:40 to thee, and thou shalt be clean. But Naaman was wroth 12:45 and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come 12:49 out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, 12:52 and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 12:54 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than 12:57 all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? 13:00 So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants came near 13:06 and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had 13:10 bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? 13:14 how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, 13:18 and be clean? Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times 13:23 in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: 13:26 and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child 13:30 and he was clean. And he returned to the man of God, 13:34 he and all his company, and came and stood before him and he said 13:37 Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in 13:42 Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy 13:46 servant. But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand 13:52 I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; 13:56 but he refused. And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray 14:00 thee, be given to thy servant 2 mules' burden of earth? 14:03 for thy servant will henceforth offer neither 14:05 burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, 14:08 but unto the Lord. In this thing the Lord pardon thy 14:12 servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon 14:15 to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself 14:18 in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of 14:21 Rimmon, the Lord pardon thy servant in this thing. 14:24 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him 14:29 a little way. Thank you for joining with me. 14:32 Please join me again next time. Goodbye. |
