00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be reading 00:20 from the book of 2nd Kings. When we were last together, 00:23 we were reading the story of Jehu and how at God's command 00:27 he is destroying the sons of Ahab - the family of Ahab. 00:31 Before we begin, let's pray together. 00:34 Dear God, thank you so much for another opportunity to come 00:39 and to sit in your presence and to hear your word. Please send 00:43 the Holy Spirit in a special way to bring wisdom into our hearts 00:47 as we hear your word; that it may bear fruit in our lives. 00:50 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:54 Jehu has just met up with Jehonadab, and greeted him. 01:00 And we're going to pick up now in 2nd Kings, chapter 10, 01:04 verse 16, and this is the King James Version. 01:07 And he said, Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord. 01:12 So they made him ride in his chariot. And when he came to 01:16 Samaria, he slew all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, 01:19 till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the 01:22 Lord, which he spake to Elijah. And Jehu gathered all the people 01:27 together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; 01:32 But Jehu shall serve him much. Now therefore call unto me all 01:37 the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; 01:41 let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; 01:46 whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it 01:51 in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshipers 01:56 of Baal. And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. 02:01 and they proclaimed it. And Jehu sent through all Israel: 02:05 and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a 02:08 man left that came not. And they came into the house of Baal 02:11 and the house of Baal was full from one end to another. 02:15 And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth 02:20 vestments for all the worshippers of Baal. 02:23 And he brought them forth vestments. And Jehu went, 02:28 and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said 02:31 unto the worshippers of Baal, Search and look that there be 02:35 here with you none of the servants of the Lord, 02:37 but the worshippers of Baal only. And when they went in 02:42 to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed 02:46 fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have 02:51 brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, 02:55 his life shall be for the life of him. And it came to pass, 03:01 as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, 03:04 that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay 03:08 them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of 03:12 the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, 03:16 and went to the city of the house of Baal. 03:20 And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, 03:23 and burned them. And they brake down the image of Baal, and 03:25 brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house 03:28 unto this day. Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel. 03:33 Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, 03:38 who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, 03:42 to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in 03:46 Dan. And the Lord said unto Jehu, Because thou has done well 03:51 in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done 03:54 unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in 03:57 mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit 04:01 on the throne of Israel. But Jehu took no heed to walk 04:07 in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart: 04:10 for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made 04:14 Israel to sin. In those days the Lord began to cut Israel short: 04:18 and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel; from Jordan 04:23 eastward, all the land of Gilead the Gadites, and the Reubenites, 04:27 and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, 04:31 even Gilead and Bashan. Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and 04:37 all that he did, and all his might, are they not written 04:41 in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 04:43 And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. 04:48 And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead. And the time that 04:54 Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was 20 and 8 years. 04:58 We're continuing now with 2nd Kings, chapter 11, 05:03 And this is the King James Version. 05:04 And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son 05:11 was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal. 05:16 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, 05:21 took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the 05:26 king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and 05:30 his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was 05:34 was not slain. and he was with her hid in the house of the Lord 05:39 6 years. And Athaliah did reign over the land. And the 7th year 05:45 Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, 05:48 with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the 05:51 house of the Lord, and made a covenant with them, and took an 05:54 oath of them in the house of the Lord, and shewed them the king's 05:58 son. And he commanded them, saying. This is the thing that 06:02 ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath 06:06 shall even be keepers of the watch of the king's house; 06:09 And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part 06:13 at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the 06:17 house that it be not broken down and two parts of all you 06:23 that go forth on the Sabbath, even they shall keep the watch 06:26 of the house of the Lord about the king. And ye shall compass 06:30 the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand 06:33 and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: 06:37 and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in. 06:41 And the captains over the hundreds did according to all 06:45 things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took 06:49 every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, 06:52 with them that should go out on the sabbath and came to Jehoiada 06:56 the priest. And to the captains over hundreds did the priest 06:59 give king David's spears and shields that were in the temple 07:03 of the Lord. And the guard stood every man with his weapons 07:07 in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of 07:10 the temple, to the left corner of the temple along by the altar 07:13 of the temple. And he brought forth the king's son, 07:16 and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; 07:21 and thy made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped 07:25 their hands, and said, God save the King. And when Athaliah 07:30 heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the 07:33 people into the temple of the Lord. And when she looked, 07:36 behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, 07:40 and the princes and trumpeters by the king, and all the people 07:43 of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah 07:47 rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason. 07:50 But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains 07:53 of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, 07:56 Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth 08:00 her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be 08:05 slain in the house of the Lord. And they laid hands on her; 08:08 and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the 08:12 king's house: and there was she slain. And Jehoiada made a 08:17 covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, 08:20 that they should be the Lord's people; between the king also 08:24 and the people. And all the people of the land went into 08:28 the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images 08:33 brake they into pieces thoroughly, 08:35 and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 08:39 And the priest appointed officers over the house 08:41 of the Lord. And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the 08:45 captains, and the guard and all the people of the land and they 08:49 brought down the king from the house of the Lord, and came by 08:53 the way of the gate of the guard to the king's house. And he sat 08:57 on the throne of the kings. And all the people of the land 09:02 rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah 09:07 with the sword beside the king's house. 09:08 Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign. 09:14 We're continuing now in 2nd kings, chapter 12, 09:18 And this is the King James Version. 09:19 In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; 09:26 and 40 years reigned he in Jerusalem. 09:28 And his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba. And Jehoash did 09:34 that which was right in the sight of the Lord all his days 09:38 wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 09:41 But the high places were not taken away: the people still 09:46 sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places. And Jehoash 09:51 said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things 09:54 that is brought into the house of the Lord, even the money 09:57 of everyone that passeth the account, the money that every 10:01 man is set at and all the money that cometh into any man's heart 10:05 to bring into the house of the Lord, Let the priests take it to 10:08 them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them 10:12 repair the breaches of the house wheresoever any breach shall be 10:16 found. But is was so, that in the three and twentieth year 10:21 of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches 10:25 of the house. Then king Jehoash called for the Jehoiada the 10:30 priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, 10:33 Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? Now therefore 10:37 receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it 10:41 for the breaches of the house. And the priests consented to 10:45 receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the 10:48 breaches of the house. But Jehoiada the priest took a chest 10:51 and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, 10:55 on the right side as one cometh into the house of the Lord: 10:58 and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money 11:02 that was brought into the house of the Lord. And it was so 11:06 when they saw that there was much money in the chest, 11:09 that the king's scribe and the high priest came up 11:12 and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found 11:15 in the house of the Lord. And they gave the money, being told, 11:19 into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight 11:22 of the house of the Lord: and they laid it out to the 11:24 carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the 11:28 Lord. And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber 11:32 and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the 11:35 Lord, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it. 11:40 Howbeit there were not made for the house of the Lord bowls of 11:44 silver, snuffers, basins, trumpets any vessels of gold, 11:48 or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into 11:51 the house of the Lord: But they gave that to the workmen, 11:54 and repaired therewith the house of the Lord: Moreover 11:57 they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered 12:00 the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt 12:04 faithfully. The trespass money and sin money was not brought 12:08 into the house of the Lord: it was the priests'. 12:10 Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, 12:15 and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. 12:19 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that 12:24 Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of 12:28 Judah had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the 12:31 gold that was found in the treasures of the house 12:33 of the Lord, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael 12:37 king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem. And the rest 12:42 of the acts of Joash, and all that he did are they not written 12:46 in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 12:48 And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash 12:54 in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla. 12:57 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, 13:03 his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with 13:07 his fathers in the city of David and Amaziah his son reigned 13:11 in his stead. And this is the King James Version. 13:18 In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah 13:23 king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over 13:27 Israel in Samaria, and reigned 17 years. And he did that which 13:33 was evil in the sight of the Lord, and followed the sins of 13:36 Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; 13:39 he departed not there from. And the anger of the Lord 13:44 was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand 13:46 of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad 13:49 the son of Hazael, all their days. And Jehoahaz besought 13:54 the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him: for he saw the 13:58 oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them 14:01 and the Lord gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out 14:05 from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of 14:07 Israel dwelt in their tents, as beforetime. 14:10 Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of 14:14 Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked therein: and there 14:19 remained the grove also in Samaria. Neither did he leave 14:23 of the people to Jehoahaz but 50 horsemen, and 10 chariots, 14:26 and 10,000 footmen; for the king of Syria had destroyed them, 14:30 and made them like the dust by threshing.
