00:15 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to be reading in the book 00:20 of 2nd Kings together continuing with the stories of the years 00:24 that the kings reigned over Israel and Judah. Before we 00:27 start, let's pray together. Dear God, thank you again 00:31 for an opportunity to sit in your presence 00:34 and hear your words spoken to us down through the centuries. 00:37 And the words truly are life to us today and may we hear them 00:42 and may they be a lamp to our feet, a light to our path, 00:46 bread for our hungry souls and our hearts to fit us for service 00:50 to you. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. 00:53 Amen. We're beginning to read now in 2nd Kings, chapter 15, 00:58 picking up in verse 27. In the two and fiftieth year of Azariah 01:07 king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over 01:11 Israel in Samaria, and reigned 20 years. And he did that which 01:16 was evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not from the 01:19 sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 01:22 In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglathpileser 01:27 king of Assyria, and took Ijoh, and Abelbethmaachagh, 01:32 and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, 01:37 all the land of Naphtali, and carried them captive to Assyria. 01:42 And Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah 01:48 the son of Remaliah, and smote him, and slew him, and reigned 01:52 in his stead, in the 20th year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. 01:56 And the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, 02:00 behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the 02:02 kings of Israel. In the 2nd year of Pekah the son of Remaliah 02:06 king of Israel began Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah 02:10 to reign. Five and twenty years old was he when he began to 02:14 reign, and he reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. And his mother's 02:19 name was Jerusha, the daughter of Zadok. And he did that which 02:23 was right in the sight of the Lord: he according to all that 02:26 his father Uzziah had done. Howbeit the high places 02:31 were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense 02:35 still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the 02:38 house of the Lord. Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, 02:42 and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the 02:45 chronicles of the kings of Judah? In those days the Lord 02:49 began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria, 02:53 and Pekah the son of Remaliah. And Jotham slept with his 02:57 fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David 03:00 his father: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead. 03:05 We're continuing now with 2nd Kings, chapter 16, verse 1. 03:10 In the 17th year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of 03:16 Jotham king of Judah began to reign. 20 years old was Ahaz 03:19 when he began to reign, and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem, 03:23 and did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, his God, 03:26 like David his father. But he walked in the way of the kings 03:31 of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, 03:34 according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord 03:36 cast out from before the children of Israel. 03:38 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, 03:42 and on the hills, and under every green tree. 03:46 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of 03:50 Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, 03:54 but could not overcome him. At that time Rezin king of Syria 03:58 recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: 04:02 and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day. 04:06 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, 04:13 saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me 04:17 out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of 04:19 the king of Israel, which rise up against me. 04:21 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house 04:25 of the Lord and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it 04:29 for a present to the king of Assyria. And the king of Assyria 04:33 hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against 04:36 Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive 04:39 to Kir, and slew Rezin. And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet 04:45 Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at 04:49 Damascus: and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion 04:54 of the altar, and the pattern of it, 04:56 according to all the workmanship thereof. And Urijah the priest 05:00 built and altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from 05:04 Damascus. So Urijah the priest made it against king Ahaz came 05:09 from Damascus. And when the king was come from Damascus, 05:14 the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar 05:18 and offered thereon. And he burnt his burnt offering 05:22 and his meat offering, and poured his drink offering, 05:24 and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings, upon the altar. 05:27 And he brought also the brazen altar, which was before the Lord 05:32 from the forefront of the house from between the altar and the 05:36 house of the Lord, and put it on the north side of the altar. 05:40 And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the 05:45 great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening 05:48 meat offering, and the king's burnt sacrifice, and his meat 05:51 offering with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, 05:54 and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; 05:56 and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, 05:59 and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the brasen altar 06:03 shall be for me to inquire by. Thus did Urijah the priest 06:09 according to all that king Ahaz commanded. And king Ahaz 06:13 cut off the borders of the bases and removed the laver from off 06:17 them; and took down the sea from off the brasen oxen 06:21 that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones. 06:25 And the covert for the Sabbath that they had built in the house 06:29 and the king's entry without, turned he from the house 06:33 of the Lord for the king of Assyria. 06:34 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did, are they not 06:39 written in the book of the chronicles of the kings 06:41 of Judah? And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried 06:46 with his fathers in the city of David: and Hezekiah his son 06:49 reigned in his stead. We're continuing now with 06:53 2nd kings, chapter 17, and this is the King James Version. 06:57 In the 12th year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of 07:03 Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel 9 years. And he did 07:08 which was evil in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings 07:12 of Israel that were before him. Against him came up Shalmaneser 07:18 king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, 07:21 and gave him presents. And the king of Assyria found conspiracy 07:26 in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, 07:29 and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done 07:32 year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, 07:36 and bound him in prison. Then the king of Assyria came up 07:39 throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged 07:43 it 3 years. In the 9th year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took 07:49 Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, 07:52 and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, 07:56 and in the cities of the Medes. For so it was, that the children 08:00 of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God which had brought 08:04 them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh 08:08 king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, and walked in the 08:12 statutes of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before 08:15 the children of Israel, and the of kings of Israel, 08:18 which they had made. And the children of Israel did secretly 08:22 those things that were not right against the Lord their God, 08:25 and they built them high places in all their cities, 08:29 from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. 08:32 And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, 08:36 and under every green tree: and there they burnt incense in all 08:40 the high places, as did the heathen whom the Lord carried 08:43 away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke 08:47 the Lord to anger: For they served idols, whereof the Lord 08:52 had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. 08:54 Yet the Lord testified against Israel, and against Judah, 08:58 by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, 09:01 Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments 09:05 and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded 09:09 your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants 09:11 the prophets. Notwithstanding they would not hear but hardened 09:17 their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not 09:20 believe in the Lord their God. And they rejected his statutes 09:24 and his covenant that he had made with their fathers 09:26 and his testimonies which he testified against them; 09:29 and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the 09:35 heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord 09:37 had charged them, that they should not do like them. 09:41 And they left all the commandments of the 09:43 Lord their God, and made them molten images, even 2 calves, 09:48 and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, 09:51 and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters 09:56 to pass through the fire, and used divinations 09:58 and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil 10:02 in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. 10:05 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed 10:10 them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of 10:14 Judah only. Also Judah kept not the commandments of the Lord 10:18 their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which 10:20 they made. And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, 10:24 and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand 10:28 of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. 10:31 For he rent Israel from the house of David; 10:34 and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam 10:38 drave Israel from following the Lord, and made them sin a great 10:43 sin. For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of 10:46 Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; 10:49 Until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had 10:53 said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried 10:57 away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day. 11:02 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon and from Cuthah 11:06 and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed 11:11 them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of 11:14 Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities 11:18 thereof. And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling 11:23 there, that they feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent 11:26 lions among them, which slew some of them. Wherefore they 11:30 spake to the king of Assria, saying, The nations which thou 11:33 hast removed and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not 11:37 the manner of the God of the Land. Therefore he hath sent 11:41 lions among them and behold, they slay them, because they 11:44 know not the manner of the God of the land. Then the king 11:47 of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests 11:51 whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, 11:54 and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. 11:56 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from 12:00 Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel and taught them how they should 12:03 fear the Lord. Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, 12:07 and put them in the houses of the high places which the 12:10 Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein 12:14 they dwelt. And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, 12:18 and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made 12:22 Ashima, and the Avites made Nighaz and Tartak, 12:26 and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech 12:31 and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. So they feared the 12:37 Lord, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests 12:40 of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the 12:43 houses of the high places. They feared the Lord and served their 12:47 own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried 12:51 away from thence. Unto this day they do after the former manners 12:55 They fear not the Lord, neither do they after their statutes, 12:59 or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment 13:01 which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named 13:05 Israel; with whom the Lord had made a covenant, and charged 13:10 them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves 13:15 to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: But the Lord 13:18 who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power 13:22 and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye 13:27 worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice. And the statutes, 13:30 and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he 13:33 wrote for you, ye shall observe to do forevermore; 13:37 and ye shall not fear other gods. And the covenant that 13:41 have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear 13:45 other gods. But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall 13:50 deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. Howbeit they 13:55 did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. 13:58 So these nations feared the Lord, and served their graven 14:01 images, both their children, and their children's children: 14:04 as did their fathers, so do they unto this day. 14:08 Continuing in 2nd Kings chapter 18, 14:11 This is the King James Version. Now it came to pass in the 14:15 3rd of year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, 14:18 that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz the son of Ahaz king of Judah 14:20 began to reign. Twenty and five years old was he when he began 14:24 to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem 14:27 His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. 14:32 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, 14:36 according to all that David his father did. |
