00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:16 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to continue reading
00:20 in 1st Chronicles. Before we start let's pray together.
00:22 Dear God, thank you for preserving these words
00:27 for us all down through the centuries to this point in time
00:31 right now, where we will hear the story of your servant David.
00:34 And like David, we would like to be men and women after your
00:38 heart. Please change our hearts. Create in us clean hearts and
00:42 renew right spirits in us through your words of life today
00:45 We love you and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:48 We're now reading in 1st Chronicles, chapter 12,
00:53 and we're reading the account of king David. Saul and his sons
00:57 have just died and the people are rallying around David,
01:01 as he begins his reign. Let's pick it up in Chapter 12,
01:04 and we're beginning in verse 22 this is the King James version.
01:09 For at that time, day by day, there came to David to help him,
01:15 until it was a great host, like the host of God.
01:18 And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed
01:21 to the war and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of
01:24 Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord.
01:27 The children of Judah that bear shield and spear were 6,800
01:32 ready armed to the war. Of the children of Simeon, mighty men
01:37 of valour for the war, 7,100. Of the children of Levi, 4,600.
01:44 And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were
01:47 3,700. And Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his
01:54 father's house twenty and two captains.
01:56 And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, 3,000:
02:00 for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward
02:04 of the house of Saul. And of the children of Ephraim, 20,800,
02:09 mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their
02:12 fathers. And of the half tribe of Manasseh 18,000, which
02:17 were expressed by name, to come and make David king.
02:19 And of the children of Issachar which were men that had
02:21 understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do;
02:25 the heads of them were 200; and their brethren were at their
02:30 commandment. Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle,
02:33 expert in war, with all instruments of war,
02:36 50,000 which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.
02:41 And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with
02:46 shield and spear, 37,000. And of the Danites expert in war
02:52 28,600. And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in
02:59 war, 40,000. And on the other side of Jordan of the Reubenites
03:04 the Gadites and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all
03:07 manner of instruments of war for the battle, 120,000.
03:12 All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect
03:17 heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel:
03:21 and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David
03:26 king. And there they were with David three days, eating and
03:30 drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
03:33 Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and
03:37 Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels,
03:41 and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs,
03:46 and bunches of raisins, and wine and oil, and oxen, and sheep
03:51 abundantly: for there was joy in Israel. Continuing in
03:57 1st Chronicles, chapter 13 and this is the King James version.
04:00 And David consulted with the captains of thousands
04:05 and hundreds, and with every leader. And David said unto all
04:09 the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you,
04:12 and that it be of the Lord our God, let us send abroad unto our
04:17 brethren everywhere, that are left in all the land of Israel,
04:20 and with them also to the priests and Levites which are
04:24 in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves
04:28 unto it: and let us bring again the ark of our God to us:
04:32 for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul. And all the
04:38 congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was
04:41 right in the eyes of all the people. So David gathered all
04:44 Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of
04:48 Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjathjearim.
04:52 And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is,
04:56 to Kirjathjearim which belongeth to Judah, to bring up thence
05:00 the ark of God the Lord, that dwelleth between the cherubims,
05:04 whose name is called on it. And they carried the ark of God
05:08 in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio
05:14 drave the cart. And David and all Israel played before God
05:18 with all their might, and with singing, and with harps,
05:21 and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals,
05:24 and with trumpets. And when they came unto the threshing floor
05:28 of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark;
05:32 for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled
05:37 against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the
05:40 ark: and there he died before God. And David was displeased,
05:44 because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore
05:48 that place is called Perez-uzza to this day.
05:51 And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring
05:54 the ark of God home to me? So David brought not the ark home
05:58 to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the
06:02 house of Obed-edom the Gittite. And the ark of God
06:06 remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house 3 months.
06:09 And the Lord blessed the house of Obed-edom,
06:12 and all that he had. Continuing with 1st Chronicles,
06:17 chapter 14, this is the King James version.
06:20 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David,
06:25 and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters,
06:28 to build him an house. And David perceived that the Lord
06:32 had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was
06:36 lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.
06:38 And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more
06:43 sons and daughters. Now these are the names of his children
06:47 which he had in Jerusalem: Shamua, and Shobab,
06:51 Nathan, and Solomon, and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet, and
06:58 Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, and Elishama, and Beeliada,
07:04 and Eliphalet. And when the Philistines heard that David
07:09 was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines
07:12 went up to seek David. And David heard of it,
07:15 and went out against them. And the Philistines came and spread
07:18 themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And David inquired
07:21 of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines?
07:25 and wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And the Lord said unto
07:29 him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
07:32 So they came up to Baalperazim; and David smote them there.
07:37 Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine
07:42 hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called
07:46 the name of that place Baalperazim.
07:49 And when they had left their gods there,
07:51 David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.
07:54 And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad
07:57 in the valley. Therefore David inquired again of God;
08:01 and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them,
08:06 and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
08:09 And it shall be when thou shalt hear a sound of going
08:13 in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go
08:17 out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite
08:21 the host of the Philistines. David therefore did as God
08:25 commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from
08:29 Gibeon even to Gazer. And the fame of David went out into
08:34 all lands; and the Lord brought fear of him upon all nations.
08:39 We're continuing with 1st Chronicles, chapter 15,
08:42 and this is the King James version.
08:43 And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared
08:48 a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
08:52 Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God
08:56 but the Levites: for them hath the Lord chose to carry the ark
08:59 of God, and to minister unto him forever.
09:02 And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring
09:06 up the ark of the Lord unto his place, which he had prepared
09:09 for it. And David assembled the children of Aaron,
09:12 and the Levites: Of the sons of Kohath; Uriel the chief,
09:18 and his brethren and hundred and twenty.
09:20 Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren 220.
09:25 Of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief, and his brethren 130.
09:30 Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and
09:33 his brethren 200: Of the sons of Hebron; Eliel the chief,
09:37 and his brethren fourscore: Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab
09:42 the chief and his brethren 112. And David called for Zadok
09:47 and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel,
09:51 Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab,
09:55 and said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the
09:58 Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren,
10:02 that ye may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel
10:06 unto the place that I have prepared for it.
10:09 For because ye did it not at the first, the Lord our God made a
10:14 breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due
10:17 order. So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves
10:21 to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel.
10:24 And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their
10:28 shoulders with the staves thereon, As Moses commanded
10:31 according to the word of the Lord. And David spake to the
10:35 chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers
10:38 with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals
10:44 sounding by lifting up the voice with joy.
10:47 There's a list now of the different singers and musicians
10:52 and we're going to skip down a few verses to verse 25.
10:56 So David and the elders of Israel, and the captains over
11:00 thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord
11:03 out of the house of Obed-edom with joy. And it came to pass
11:07 when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of
11:09 the covenant of the Lord, that they offered 7 bullocks
11:13 and 7 rams. And David was clothed with a robe of fine
11:17 linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark,
11:20 and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the
11:24 singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.
11:27 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord
11:31 with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets,
11:35 and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.
11:38 And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the Lord
11:43 came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul
11:47 looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing:
11:50 she despised him in her heart. We're continuing with
11:55 1st Chronicles, chapter 16. This is the King James version.
11:58 So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst
12:02 of the tent that David had pitched for it; and they offered
12:05 burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.
12:09 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings
12:13 and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name
12:16 of the Lord. And he dealt to every one of Israel,
12:20 both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good
12:24 piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. And he appointed
12:29 certain of the Levites to minister before the ark
12:31 of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise the Lord
12:36 God of Israel: Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah,
12:42 Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah,
12:47 and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom: and Jeiel with
12:51 psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;
12:55 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets
12:59 continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
13:03 Then on that day David delivered first this psalm
13:07 to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.
13:11 Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his
13:17 deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him,
13:21 talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name
13:27 let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
13:31 Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.
13:37 Remember his marvelous works that he hath done, his wonders,
13:41 and the judgments of his mouth; O ye seed of Israel his servant,
13:45 ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the Lord our God;
13:50 his judgments are in all the earth. Be ye mindful always
13:56 of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand
13:59 generations; Even of the covenant which he made with
14:02 Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; and hath confirmed
14:05 the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting
14:09 covenant, Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan,
14:13 the lot of your inheritance; When ye were but few,
14:17 even a few, and strangers in it. And when they went from nation
14:22 to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
14:24 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings
14:29 for their sakes, Saying, Touch not mine anointed,
14:33 and do my prophets no harm.
14:36 Thank you for joining me. Goodbye.
