00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:16 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today,
00:19 to read in 1st Chronicles of the reign of king David.
00:23 Before we start, let's pray together.
00:25 Dear God, thank you again for your blessings and your guidance
00:30 and your love. Please be with us now as we read of David
00:35 a man after Your own heart, and may his story and his example
00:39 bear fruit in our lives, that we may also be more like you.
00:43 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:46 When we were last together, we were reading how
00:50 they had brought the ark of the covenant back and David was
00:54 singing a song to the Lord in celebration.
00:56 We're going to pick that up in chapter 16 beginning in verse 23
01:01 and this is the King James version.
01:02 Sing unto the Lord all the earth shew forth from day to day
01:07 his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvelous
01:12 works among all nations. For great is the Lord,
01:16 and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all
01:20 gods. For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord
01:24 made the heavens. Glory and honor are in his presence;
01:28 strength and gladness are in his place. Give unto the Lord,
01:33 ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength
01:38 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name:
01:42 bring an offering, and come before him, worship the Lord
01:47 in the beauty of holiness. Fear before him all the earth:
01:51 the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
01:55 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice:
01:59 and let men say among the nations, The Lord reigneth.
02:02 Let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof:
02:05 let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.
02:08 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence
02:12 of the Lord, because he cometh to judge the earth.
02:14 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good;
02:19 for his mercy endureth for ever. And say ye, Save us, O God
02:24 of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us
02:28 from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name,
02:31 and glory in thy praise. Blessed be the Lord God
02:36 Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen,
02:41 and praised the Lord. So he left there before the ark
02:46 of the covenant of the Lord Asaph and his brethren,
02:49 to minister before the ark continually, as every day's
02:53 work required: And Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore
02:58 and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah
03:03 to be porters: And Zadok the priest, and his brethren
03:06 the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord
03:09 in the high place that was at Gibeon, to offer burnt offerings
03:13 unto the Lord upon the altar of the burnt offering continually
03:16 morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written
03:21 in the law of the Lord, which he commanded Israel;
03:23 And with them Heman and Jeduthun and the rest that were chosen,
03:27 who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the Lord,
03:31 because his mercy endureth for ever; and with them Heman and
03:36 Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should
03:39 make a sound, and with musical instruments of God.
03:42 And the sons of Jeduthun were porters. And all the people
03:47 departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless
03:51 his house. - Continuing in 1st Chronicles, chapter 17,
03:56 and this is the King James version.
03:58 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David
04:04 said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars,
04:09 but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remaineth under
04:13 curtains. Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine
04:18 heart; for God is with thee. And it came to pass the same
04:22 night, that the word of God came to Nathan, Saying, Go and tell
04:27 David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me
04:31 an house to dwell in: For I have not dwelt in an house
04:35 since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day;
04:38 but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle
04:42 to another. Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel,
04:46 spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I
04:50 commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me
04:53 an house of cedars? Now therefore thus shalt thou say
04:58 unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts,
05:01 I took thee from the sheepcote even from following the sheep,
05:05 that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
05:09 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked,
05:12 and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee,
05:16 and have made thee a name like the name of the great men
05:18 that are in the earth. Also I will ordain a place
05:24 for my people Israel and will plant them,
05:26 and they shall dwell in their place,
05:28 and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of
05:32 wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning.
05:35 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over
05:39 my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies.
05:43 Furthermore I tell thee that the Lord will build thee an house.
05:48 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou
05:52 must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed
05:57 after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish
06:02 his kingdom. He shall build me an house, and I will stablish
06:07 his throne forever. I will be his father, and he shall be
06:11 my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took
06:17 it from him that was before thee but I will settle him in mine
06:21 house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be
06:25 established for evermore. according to all these words,
06:28 and according to all this vision so did Nathan speak unto David.
06:32 And David the king came and sat before the Lord, and said,
06:36 Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, that thou hast
06:42 brought me hitherto? And yet this was a small thing in thine
06:46 eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house
06:50 for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according
06:53 to the estate of a man of high degree, O Lord God.
06:57 What can David speak more to thee for the honor of thy
07:01 servant? for thou knowest thy servant. O lord for thy
07:07 servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done
07:11 all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
07:15 O Lord, there is none like thee, neither is there any God
07:21 beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears
07:24 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel,
07:29 whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee
07:33 a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out
07:36 nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of
07:40 Egypt? For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people
07:44 forever; and thou, Lord becamest their God. Therefore now, Lord,
07:50 let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant
07:54 and concerning his house be established forever,
07:58 and do as thou hast said. Let it even be established,
08:03 that thy name may be magnified forever, saying, The Lord of
08:07 hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel:
08:11 and let the house of David thy servant be established before
08:16 thee. For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt
08:21 build him an house: therefore thy servant has found in his
08:25 heart to pray before thee. And now, Lord, thou art God,
08:30 and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
08:34 Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house
08:38 of thy servant, that it may be before thee forever:
08:41 for thou blessest, O Lord, and it shall be blessed forever.
08:46 Continuing to read in 1st Chronicles, chapter 18.
08:50 This is the King James version.
08:52 Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines
08:58 and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of
09:02 the Philistines. And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became
09:07 David's servants, and brought gifts. And David smote Hadarezer
09:12 king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion
09:16 by the river Euphrates. And David took from him a thousand
09:20 chariots, and 7,000 horsemen, and 20,000 footmen:
09:24 David also hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved
09:27 of them and hundred chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus
09:32 came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians
09:36 two and twenty thousand men. Then David put garrisons in
09:40 Syria-Damascus; and the Syrians became David's servants,
09:44 and brought gifts. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever
09:48 he went. And David took the shields of gold that were on the
09:52 servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.
09:54 Likewise for Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer,
09:58 brought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made
10:02 the brazen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.
10:04 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all
10:10 the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; he sent Hadoram his son
10:15 to king David, to inquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him
10:18 because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him,
10:22 for Hadarezer had war with Tou; and with him all manner of
10:27 vessels of gold and silver and brass. Them also king David
10:32 dedicated unto the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he
10:35 brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab,
10:39 and from the children of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from
10:42 Amalek. Moreover Abiushai the son of Zeruiah slew of the
10:48 Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand.
10:51 And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became
10:56 David's servants. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever
11:00 he went. So David reigned over all Israel and executed judgment
11:05 and justice among all his people. And Joab the son
11:08 of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of
11:13 Ahilud, recorder. And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimilech
11:18 the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe;
11:23 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the
11:28 Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king.
11:32 Continuing with 1st Chronicles, chapter 19,
11:36 this is the King James version. Now it came to pass after this,
11:41 that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died,
11:45 and his son reigned in his stead. And David said,
11:48 I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash,
11:52 because his father shewed kindness to me.
11:55 And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning
11:59 his father. So the servants of David came into the land
12:02 of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
12:05 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun,
12:09 Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father,
12:12 that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants
12:16 come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy
12:20 out the land? Wherefore Hanun took David's servants,
12:24 and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst
12:28 hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
12:30 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were
12:34 served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
12:38 ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho unto your
12:42 beards be grown and then return. And when the children of Ammon
12:47 saw that they had made themselves odious to David,
12:50 Hanun and the children of Ammon sent 1,000 talents of silver
12:54 to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia,
12:58 and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.
13:01 So they hired 32,000 chariots, and the king of Maachah
13:07 and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba.
13:11 And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together
13:14 from their cities, and came to battle. And when David heard of
13:18 it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
13:21 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array
13:24 before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come
13:28 were by themselves in the field. Now when Joab saw
13:31 that the battle was set against him before and behind,
13:35 he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array
13:39 against the Syrians. And the rest of the people he delivered
13:42 unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves
13:46 in array against the children of Ammon. And he said,
13:49 If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me:
13:53 but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee,
13:55 then I will help thee. Be of good courage, and let us behave
13:59 ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of
14:03 our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.
14:06 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the
14:11 Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
14:14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled,
14:18 they likewise fled before Abiashai his brother,
14:21 and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
14:25 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse
14:28 before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth
14:31 the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shopach the captain
14:34 of the host of Hadarezer went before them. - Goodbye.
