00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're going to continue reading today 00:20 some of the stories of the reign of King David. 00:22 Before we begin, let's pray together. 00:25 Dear Lord, thank you so much for another opportunity to 00:29 sit and to read the stories of David, the man after your own 00:33 heart. As we learn the lessons of His life, please send the 00:38 Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and show us how we can apply 00:42 them in our own life today. So we can also be closer to you and 00:46 glorify you in all that we do. We love you so much 00:50 and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:53 We're reading in 1st Chronicles, chapter 19, and when we were 00:56 last together, Abishai and his brother, Joab had gone out to 01:01 fight the armies of Ammon, and Syria. We'll pick up the story 01:05 in verse 17, and this is the King James Version. 01:09 And it was told David and he gathered all Israel and passed 01:13 over Jordan and came upon them and set the battle in array 01:17 against them. So when David had put the battle in array against 01:21 the Syrians, they fought with him. But the Syrians fled before 01:24 Israel; and David slew of the Syrians 7,000 men which fought 01:28 in chariots, and 40,000 footmen, and killed Shopach the captain 01:32 of the host. And when the servants of Hadarezer saw 01:35 that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace 01:38 with David, and became his servants: neither would the 01:41 Syrians help the children of Ammon any more. 01:44 Continuing to read with 1st Chronicles, chapter 20, 01:47 and this is the King James Version. - And it came to pass 01:52 that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out 01:55 to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted 01:59 the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged 02:03 Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. 02:06 And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it. And David took the 02:11 crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh 02:15 a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; 02:19 and it was set upon David's head; and he brought also 02:23 exceeding much spoil out of the city. And he brought out the 02:27 people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows 02:30 of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities 02:34 of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people 02:38 returned to Jerusalem. And it came to pass after this, that 02:42 there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time 02:46 Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children 02:52 of the giant: and they were subdued. And there was war again 02:57 with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair, 03:00 slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, 03:04 whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam. And yet again 03:08 there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, 03:13 whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, 6 on each hand, 03:18 and 6 on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant. 03:23 But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea 03:27 David's brother slew him. These were born unto the giant 03:33 in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand 03:36 of his servants. - We're continuing to read 03:39 in 1st Chronicles, chapter 21, This is the King James Version. 03:43 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David 03:50 to number Israel. And David said to Joab and to the rulers 03:55 of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; 04:00 and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 04:03 And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times 04:08 so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not 04:12 all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? 04:17 why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? 04:21 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. 04:24 Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, 04:28 and came to Jerusalem. And Joab gave the sum of the number 04:31 of the people unto David and all they of Israel were a thousand 04:35 thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: 04:38 and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men 04:43 that drew sword. But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among 04:48 them for the king's word was abominable to Joab. 04:50 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote 04:56 Israel. And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, 05:00 because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, 05:04 do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very 05:08 foolishly. And the Lord spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying, 05:14 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee 05:20 three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto 05:24 thee. So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith 05:29 the Lord, Choose thee either 3 year' famine; or 3 months 05:35 to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine 05:40 enemies overtaketh thee; or else 3 days the sword of the Lord 05:45 even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord 05:49 destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore 05:53 advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him 05:57 that sent me. And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait 06:03 let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are 06:08 his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man. 06:13 So the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell in Israel 06:17 70,00 men. And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it. 06:22 And as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him 06:26 of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, 06:29 It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord 06:34 stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 06:37 And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord stand 06:41 between the earth and the heaven having a drawn sword in his hand 06:45 stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders 06:49 of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces 06:53 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people 06:59 to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil 07:04 indeed, but as for these sheep, what have they done? 07:07 Let thine hand, I pray thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on 07:12 my father's house; but not on my people, that they should be 07:16 plagued. Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to 07:20 David that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the 07:24 Lord in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. 07:27 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the 07:32 name of the Lord. And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; 07:34 and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was 07:39 threshing wheat. And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked 07:43 and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed 07:46 himself to David with his face to the ground. Then David said 07:50 to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may 07:53 build an altar therein unto the Lord: thou shalt grant it me 07:58 for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the 08:01 people. And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let 08:05 my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give 08:09 thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing 08:12 instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; 08:15 I give it all. And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will 08:20 verily buy it for the full price for I will not take that which 08:24 is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. 08:29 So David gave to Ornan for the place 600 shekels of gold 08:34 by weight. And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and 08:37 offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called 08:41 upon the Lord; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the 08:45 altar of burnt offering. And the Lord commanded the angel; 08:49 and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof. 08:52 At that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him 08:56 in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, 08:58 then he sacrificed there. For the tabernacle of the Lord 09:02 which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the 09:05 burnt offering, were at that season in the high place 09:08 at Gibeon. But David could not go before it to inquire of God: 09:12 for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the Lord. 09:17 Continuing to read in 1st Chronicles, chapter 22, 09:21 This is the King James Version. Then David said, This it the 09:26 house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of the burnt 09:29 offering for Israel. And David commanded to gather together 09:33 the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set 09:35 masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. 09:39 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails 09:42 for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass 09:46 in abundance without weight; Also cedar trees in abundance 09:50 for the Sidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood 09:53 to David. And David said, Solomon my son is young 09:57 and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the Lord 09:59 must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout 10:04 all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. 10:08 So David prepared abundantly before his death. Then he called 10:14 for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the 10:18 Lord God of Israel. And David said to Solomon, My son, 10:22 As for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name 10:26 of the Lord my God: But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 10:30 Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: 10:35 thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast 10:39 shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. Behold, a son shall 10:43 be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him 10:49 rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be 10:53 Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel 10:57 in his days. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall 11:01 be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish 11:05 the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. Now, my son, 11:10 the Lord be with thee; and and prosper thou, and build 11:15 the house of the Lord thy God, as he hath said of thee. 11:19 Only the Lord give thee wisdom and understanding, and give 11:24 thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of 11:28 the Lord thy God. Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest 11:32 heed to fulfill the statutes and judgments which the Lord 11:35 charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good 11:41 courage: dread not, nor be dismayed. Now, behold, in my 11:47 trouble I have prepared for the house of the Lord an hundred 11:50 thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of 11:54 silver and of brass and iron without weight for it is in 11:57 abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest 12:02 add thereto. Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, 12:06 hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of 12:10 cunning men for every manner of work. Of the gold, the silver, 12:15 and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise 12:18 therefore, and be doing, and the Lord be with thee. David also 12:23 commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, 12:26 saying, Is not the Lord your God with you? and hath he not given 12:30 you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of 12:33 the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the Lord, 12:37 and before his people. Now set your heart and your soul to seek 12:41 the Lord your God; arise therefore, and build ye 12:45 the sanctuary of the Lord God, to bring the ark of the covenant 12:48 of the Lord, and the holy vessels of God, into the house 12:52 that is to be built to the name of the Lord. 12:55 We're continuing to read in 1st Chronicles, chapter 23, 12:59 This is the King James Vision. So when David was old 13:03 and full of days, he made Solomon his son king 13:07 over Israel. And he gathered together all the princes of 13:11 Israel, with the priests and the Levites. Now the Levites were 13:15 numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: 13:17 and their number by their polls, man by man, was 38,000. 13:22 of which 20 and 4 thousand were to set forward the work of the 13:26 house of the Lord; and 6,000 were officers and judges: 13:30 Moreover four thousand were porters; and 4,000 praised the 13:34 Lord with the instruments which I made, said David, 13:38 to praise therewith. And David divided them into courses among 13:42 the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 13:46 I am going to skip, now, down verse 24. 13:51 We're continuing in chapter 23, verse 24. 13:54 These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers 13:57 even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number 14:01 of names by their polls, that did the work for the service 14:04 of the house of the Lord, from the age of 20 years and upward. 14:07 For David said, The Lord God of Israel hath given rest unto 14:11 his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever: 14:14 And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry 14:17 the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. 14:20 For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered 14:24 from 20 years old and above: Because their office was to wait 14:28 on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the Lord 14:31 in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying 14:34 of all holy things, and the work of the service 14:37 of the house of God. |
