00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we're continuing to read today in
00:20 the book of 2nd Chronicles. As we are in the middle of
00:24 Solomon's story, he has completed the temple and
00:28 come before the Lord, and the Lord has given Solomon a solemn
00:31 warning. He said, If you will walk in my ways I will bless you
00:35 but if you forsake my ways, catastrophe and disaster will
00:41 follow. We're going to pick up that story; but let's pray
00:43 together first. Dear God thank you for your word
00:48 and for the warning and for the blessing, and for the lesson,
00:52 of the story of King Solomon. And just as he prayed, Lord,
00:56 we come before you as sinners and we ask you to hear our
01:00 prayer and forgive us and heal us, and come now to be with us
01:04 as we read these words. And teach us what you'd have us
01:07 to learn from them. We love you so much, and thank you for
01:10 loving us. Amen. We're picking up in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 7,
01:17 and we'll start with verse 20. God is speaking to Solomon.
01:22 And he says, Here is what will happen if you forsake my
01:24 commandments. Then I will pluck them up by the
01:28 roods out of my land which I have given them; and this house
01:31 which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my
01:35 sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among
01:39 all nations. And this house, which is high, shall be an
01:44 astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall
01:48 say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and unto
01:52 this house? And it shall be answered, Because they forsook
01:56 the Lord God of their fathers which brought them forth out of
02:01 the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped
02:05 them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil
02:10 upon them. - Continuing now in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 8,
02:14 and this is the King James Version.
02:16 And it came to pass at the end of 20 years, wherein Solomon
02:21 had built the house of the Lord, and his own house, that the
02:24 cities which Huram had restored to Solomon, Solomon built them,
02:28 and caused the children of Israel to dwell there.
02:31 And Solomon went to Hamath-zobah and prevailed against it.
02:36 And he built Tadmor in the wilderness, and all the store
02:40 cities which he built in Hamath. Also he built Beth-horon the
02:45 upper and Beth-horon the nether, fenced cities, with walls, gates
02:50 and bars; And Baalath, and all the store cities that Solomon
02:54 had, and all the chariot cities and the cities of the horsemen,
02:57 and all that Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in
03:01 Lebanon, and throughout all the land of his dominion.
03:04 As for all the people that were left of the Hittites, and the
03:07 Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites,
03:10 and the Jebusites, which were not of Israel, But of their
03:14 children, who were left after them in the land, whom the
03:16 children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay
03:20 tribute until this day. But of the children of Israel
03:24 did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they were men of
03:27 war, and chief of his captains, and captains of his chariot
03:31 and horsemen. And these were the chief of king Solomon's
03:35 officers, even two hundred and fifty, that bare rule over the
03:38 people. And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of
03:43 the city of David unto the house that he had built for her:
03:45 for he said, My wife shall not dwell in the house of David
03:49 the king of Israel, because the places are holy, whereunto the
03:53 ark of the Lord hath come. Then Solomon offered burnt offerings
03:57 unto the Lord, on the altar of the Lord which he had built
04:01 before the porch, even after a certain rate every day,
04:04 offering according to the commandment of Moses,
04:07 on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts,
04:11 three times in the year, even in the feast of unleavened bread,
04:14 and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles.
04:18 And he appointed, according to the order of David his father,
04:22 the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites
04:25 to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests,
04:29 as the duty of every day required: the porters also
04:33 by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God
04:38 commanded. And they departed not from the commandment of the king
04:42 unto the priests and Levites concerning any matter,
04:44 or concerning the treasures. Now all the work of Solomon was
04:48 prepared unto the day of the foundation of the house of the
04:51 Lord, and until it was finished. So the house of the Lord
04:55 was perfected. Then went Solomon to Eziongeber, and to Eloth,
05:01 at the sea side in the land of Edom. And Huram sent him by the
05:05 hands of his servant ships, and servants that had knowledge of
05:08 the sea; and they went with the servants of Solomon to Ophir,
05:12 and took thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold,
05:16 and brought them to king Solomon.
05:18 Continuing with 2nd Chronicles, chapter 9, and this is the
05:22 King James Version. And when the queen of Sheba
05:26 heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon,
05:30 with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great
05:34 company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance,
05:38 and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon,
05:42 she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
05:45 And Solomon told her all her questions: and there was nothing
05:50 hid from Solomon which he told her not. And when the queen of
05:53 Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he
05:57 had built, and the meat of his table, and the sitting of his
06:01 servants, and the attendance of his ministers and their apparel;
06:04 his cupbearers also, and their apparel; and his ascent by which
06:09 he went up into the house of the Lord; there was no more spirit
06:12 in her. And she said to the king, It was a true report
06:17 which I heard in mine own land of thine acts and of thy wisdom:
06:21 Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine
06:26 eyes had seen it: and, behold the one half of the greatness
06:30 of thy wisdom was not told me: for thou exceedest the fame
06:35 that I heard. Happy are thy men, and happy are these thy
06:39 servants which stand continually before thee and hear thy wisdom.
06:43 Blessed be the Lord thy God, which delighted in thee to set
06:49 thee on his throne, to be king for the Lord thy God:
06:52 because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever,
06:57 therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment
07:02 and justice. And she gave the king an hundred and twenty
07:05 talents of gold and of spices great abundance,
07:09 and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the
07:13 queen of Sheba gave king Solomon. And the servants also
07:17 of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, which brought gold from
07:20 Ophir, brought algum trees and precious stones.
07:24 And the king made of the algum trees terraces to the house of
07:28 the Lord, and to the king's palace, and harps and psalteries
07:32 for singers: and there were none such seen before in the
07:36 land of Judah. And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba
07:40 all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which she had
07:44 brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own
07:47 land, she and her servants. Now the weight of gold that
07:51 came to Solomon in one year was six hundred
07:54 and threescore and six talents of gold; beside that which
07:59 chapmen and merchants brought. And all the kings of Arabia
08:02 and governors of the country brought gold and silver to
08:05 Solomon. And King Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten
08:09 gold: six hundred shekels of beaten gold went to one target.
08:12 And three hundred shields made he of beaten gold:
08:15 three hundred shekels of gold went to one shield.
08:17 And the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.
08:20 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it
08:26 with pure gold. And there were six steps to the throne,
08:29 with a footstool of gold, which were fastened to the throne,
08:33 and stays on each side of the sitting place, and two lions
08:36 standing by the stays: And 12 lions stood there on the one
08:41 side and on the other upon the six steps. There was not
08:45 the like made in any kingdom. And all the drinking vessels
08:50 of king Solomon were of gold, and all the vessels of the house
08:53 of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of
08:57 silver. it was not anything acounted of in the days of
09:00 Solomon. For the kings ships went to Tarshish with the
09:03 servants of Huram every three years once came the ships of
09:07 Tarshish bringing gold and silver, ivory, and apes, and
09:12 peacocks. And king Solomon passed all the kings of the
09:15 earth in riches and wisdom. And all the kings of the earth
09:19 sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, that God had
09:22 put in his heart. And they brought every man his present,
09:26 vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and raiment, harness
09:30 and spices, horses and mules, a rate year by year.
09:35 And Solomon had 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots,
09:40 and 12,000 horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities,
09:45 and with the king at Jerusalem. And he reigned over all
09:49 the kings from the river even unto the land of the Philistines
09:53 and to the border of Egypt. And the king made silver in
09:56 Jerusalem as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycamore
10:01 trees that are in the low plains in abundance.
10:03 And they brought unto Solomon horses out of Egypt,
10:07 and out of all lands. Now the rest of the acts of Solomon,
10:11 first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan
10:15 the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and
10:20 in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of
10:24 Nebat? And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel
10:29 forty years. And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was
10:34 buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son
10:38 reigned in his stead. - We're continuing with 2nd Chronicles,
10:43 chapter 10, and this is the King James Version.
10:45 And Rehoaboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel
10:52 come to make him king. And it came to pass, when Jeroboam
10:56 the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from
10:59 the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam
11:03 returned out of Egypt. And they sent and called him.
11:07 So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
11:12 Thy father made our yoke grievous: Now therefore
11:17 ease thou somewhat the grievous servidude of the father, and his
11:22 heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
11:26 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after 3 days,
11:30 And the people departed. And king Rehoboam took counsel with
11:35 the old men that had stood before Solomon his father
11:38 while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return
11:43 answer to this people? And they spake unto him, saying,
11:46 If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good
11:51 words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
11:55 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him,
11:59 and took counsel with the young men that were brought up
12:01 with him, that stood before him. And he said unto them,
12:05 What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people,
12:08 which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke
12:12 that thy father did put upon us? And the young men that were
12:16 brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou
12:20 answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father
12:23 made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us;
12:27 thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be
12:31 thicker than my father's loins. For whereas my father put a
12:35 heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke:
12:38 my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you
12:42 with scorpions. So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam
12:47 on the 3rd day as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the
12:50 third day. And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam
12:55 forsook the counsel of the old men, and answered them after
12:59 the advise of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke
13:03 heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with
13:06 whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
13:09 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of
13:14 God, that the Lord might perform his word, which he spake by the
13:17 hand of Ahijah the Shilomite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
13:21 And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them
13:25 the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we
13:28 in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse:
13:31 every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David,
13:35 see to thine own house. So all Israel that went to their tents.
13:40 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities
13:43 of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. Then King Rehoboam sent
13:47 Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of
13:49 Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam
13:53 made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
13:56 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
14:01 We're continuing with 2nd Chronicles, chapter 11,
14:04 This is the King James Version. And when Rehoboam was come to
14:08 Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin
14:10 an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men,
14:13 which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might
14:16 bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
14:18 But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God,
14:22 saying, Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon,
14:24 king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
14:29 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against
14:32 your brethren: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the
14:36 words of the Lord, and returned from going against
14:38 Jeroboam.
