00:15 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to continue to read 00:21 the history of Israel in the book of 2nd Chronicles: 00:24 But before we start, let's pray together. Dear Lord, thank you 00:29 so much for the stories that you have preserved all down through 00:33 the ages for us. Help us to learn the lesson that you have 00:38 for us from these stories and may our lives be different 00:42 for the hearing of the word today, more usable by you 00:46 to your glory. We love you and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:50 When we were last together, we were reading of king Jehoshaphat 00:55 who walked in the ways of the Lord. And when he went to 00:59 his rest, his son, king Jehoram took over. Were now reading 01:03 king Jehoram's story in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 21, 01:07 picking up with verse 12. This is the King James Version. 01:11 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, 01:17 Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, because thou hast 01:23 not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, 01:26 nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah, but hast walked in the 01:30 way of the kings of Israel, and has made Judah 01:33 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a-whoring, like to the 01:37 whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren 01:42 of thy father's house, which were better than thyself: 01:45 Behold, with a great plague will the Lord smite thy people, 01:50 and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods: 01:54 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy 01:58 bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness 02:03 day by day. Moreover the Lord stirred up against Jehoram 02:08 the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, 02:11 that were near the Ethiopians: And they came up into Judah, 02:15 and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was 02:19 found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; 02:21 so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, 02:26 the youngest of his sons. And after all this the Lord smote 02:30 him in his bowels with an incurable disease. 02:32 And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end 02:37 of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: 02:41 so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning 02:48 for him, like the burning of his fathers. 02:49 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he 02:54 reigned in Jerusalem 8 years, and departed without being 02:57 desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, 03:00 but not in the sepulchers of the kings. 03:03 Continuing in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 22; 03:07 and this is the King James Version. 03:08 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son 03:13 king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the 03:17 Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah 03:22 the son of Jerhoram king of Judah reigned. 03:24 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, 03:29 and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name 03:34 also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri. He also walked in the 03:40 ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counselor 03:43 to do wickedly. Wherefore he did evil in the sight of 03:47 the Lord like the house of Ahab: for they were his counselors 03:50 after the death of his father to his destruction. 03:52 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram 03:57 the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael 04:01 king of Syria at Ramoth-gilead: and the Syrians smote Joram. 04:07 And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds 04:11 which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Hazael, 04:14 kin of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah 04:19 went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, 04:22 because he was sick. And the destruction of Ahaziah 04:26 was of God by coming to Joram: for when he was come, 04:30 he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, 04:34 whom the Lord had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab. 04:38 And it came to pass, that, when Jehu was executing judgment 04:43 upon the house of Ahab, and found the princes of Judah, 04:46 and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah, that ministered to 04:49 Ahaziah, he slew them. And he sought Ahaziah: and they caught 04:54 him, for he was hid in Samaria and brought him to Jehu: 04:58 and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, 05:01 said them, he is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord 05:05 with all his heart. So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep 05:09 still the kingdom. But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah 05:14 saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed 05:20 royal of the house of Judah. But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of 05:25 the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from 05:31 among the king's son that were slain and put him and his nurse 05:34 in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of 05:38 king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, 05:41 for she was the sister of Ahaziah, hid him from Athaliah, 05:46 so that she slew him not. And he was with them hid in the 05:50 house of God 6 years: and Athaliah reigned over the land. 05:55 We continue the story in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 23. 05:59 This is the King James Version. 06:00 And in the 7th year Jehoiada strengthened himself, 06:05 and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of 06:09 Jehoram, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, 06:13 and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, 06:18 and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him. 06:22 And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of 06:26 all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of 06:29 Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 06:31 and all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the 06:35 house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king's son 06:39 shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David. 06:42 This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering 06:47 on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, 06:50 shall be porters of the doors; and a third part shall be at 06:55 the king's house: a third part at the gate of the foundation: 06:58 and all the people shall be in the courts of the house 07:02 of the Lord. And let none come into the house of the Lord, 07:05 save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; 07:08 they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people 07:13 shall keep the watch of the Lord. 07:16 And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man 07:20 with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever else cometh into 07:24 the housed, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king 07:30 when he cometh in, and when he goeth out. 07:32 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things 07:37 that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man 07:41 and his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that 07:45 were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest 07:47 dismissed not the courses. Moreover Jehoiada the priest 07:52 delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers 07:56 and shields, that had been king David's which were in the house 07:59 of God. And he set all the people, every man having his 08:04 weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple 08:07 to the left side of the temple, along by the altar 08:10 and the temple, by the king round about. 08:13 Then they brought out the king's son, and put upon him the crown, 08:18 and gave him the testimony, and made him king. 08:21 And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, 08:25 God save the king. 08:27 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running 08:32 and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of 08:36 the Lord: And she looked, and behold, the king stood at 08:39 his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the trumpets 08:43 by the king: and all the people of the land rejoiced, 08:46 and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of 08:50 music, and such as taught to sing praise. 08:53 Then Athatliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason. 08:58 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds 09:02 that were set over the host, and said unto them, 09:05 Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, 09:09 let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, 09:12 Slay her not in the house of the Lord. So they laid hands on her; 09:17 and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate 09:20 by the king's house, they slew her there. 09:22 And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the 09:27 people, and between the king, that they should be the Lord's 09:30 people. Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake 09:34 it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, 09:38 and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 09:41 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the 09:45 Lord by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had 09:49 distributed in the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt 09:53 offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses, 09:56 with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David. 10:00 And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the Lord, 10:04 that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in. 10:09 And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, 10:13 and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, 10:17 and brought down the king from the house of the Lord: 10:19 and they came through the high gate into the king's house, 10:23 and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. 10:26 And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet 10:32 after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword. 10:35 Continuing this story of the reign of king Joash, 10:40 in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 24, this is the King James Version. 10:44 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign and he reigned 10:51 forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Zibiah 10:57 of Beersheba. And Joash did that which was right 11:02 in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 11:05 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons 11:10 and daughters. And it came to pass after this, that Joash 11:15 was minded to repair the house of the Lord. And he gathered 11:19 together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, 11:22 Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money 11:28 to repair the house of your God from year to year, 11:32 and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites 11:36 hastened it not. And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, 11:41 and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites 11:45 to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, 11:50 according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord, 11:53 and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle 11:56 of witness? For the sons of Athatliah, that wicked woman, 12:00 had broken up the house of God and also all the dedicated 12:04 things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim. 12:08 And at the king's commandment they made a chest, and set it 12:12 without at the gate of the house of the Lord. And they made a 12:16 proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the 12:20 Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon 12:23 Israel in the wilderness. And all the princes and all the 12:27 people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, 12:31 until they had made an end. Now it came to pass, 12:35 that at what time the chest was brought unto the king's office 12:39 by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was 12:43 much money, the king's scribe and the high priest's officer 12:47 came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his 12:51 place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money 12:56 in abundance. And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did 13:01 the work of the service of the house of the Lord, 13:04 and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, 13:09 and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house 13:14 of the Lord. So the workmen wrought, and the work was 13:17 perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, 13:21 and strengthened it. And when they had finished it, 13:24 they brought the rest of the money before the king 13:27 and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the 13:30 Lord, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, 13:35 and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings 13:38 in the house of the Lord continually all the days 13:41 of Jehoiada. But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days 13:46 when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he 13:50 died. And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, 13:54 because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, 13:58 and toward his house. Now after the death of Jehoiada came the 14:03 princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. 14:06 Then the king hearkened unto them. And they left the house 14:11 of the Lord God of their fathers and served groves and idols: 14:15 and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their 14:20 trespass. Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again 14:26 unto the Lord; and they testified ageist them: 14:28 but they would not give ear. Thank you for joining with me 14:33 today to read the word of God and may it be said of us that 14:36 we serve the Lord with our whole heart and never turn 14:39 from His ways. Goodbye. |
