00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:21 to read the word of God. Before we start, let's pray together. 00:24 Dear Lord, thank you for giving us Your word to strengthen our 00:30 faith, when we are weak, to show us counsel when we have 00:35 questions, and to show us most of all more about you. 00:39 Please be with us today as we read. Thank you for loving us. 00:43 We love you so much. Amen When we were last together 00:47 we were reading in 2nd Chronicles a history 00:49 of the nation of Israel, and how they went time and again 00:54 back and forth between obedience to God and then turning from 00:58 his ways. We're picking up now the story in 2nd Chronicles 01:02 chapter 24, in verse 20. This is the King James Version. 01:07 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada 01:13 the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, 01:16 Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, 01:21 that ye cannot prosper? because ye hath forsaken the Lord, 01:25 he hath also forsaken you. And they conspired against him, 01:29 and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king 01:32 in the court of the house of the Lord. Thus Joash the king 01:37 remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father 01:40 had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died 01:46 he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it.. 01:49 And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of 01:53 Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem 01:57 and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people 02:01 and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus. 02:05 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, 02:09 and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, 02:12 because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. 02:16 So they executed judgment against Joash. 02:20 And when they were departed from him; for they left him in great 02:25 diseases, his own servants conspired against him 02:29 for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, 02:31 and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him 02:37 in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres 02:40 of the kings. And these are they that conspired against him; 02:45 Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad 02:51 the son of Shimrith a Moabitess. Now concerning his sons, 02:56 and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing 03:00 of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story 03:03 of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned 03:07 in his stead. We're continuing 03:10 in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 25, This is the King James Version. 03:14 Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began 03:19 to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. 03:22 And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 03:27 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord 03:31 but not with a perfect heart. Now it came to pass, 03:35 when the kingdom was established to him, 03:37 that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father. 03:41 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in 03:46 the law in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, 03:49 saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither 03:53 shall the children die for the fathers, but every man 03:55 shall die for his own sin. Moreover Amaziah gathered 04:00 Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, 04:03 and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of 04:06 their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: 04:09 and he numbered them from 20 years old and above, 04:13 and found them 300,000 choice men, able to go forth to war, 04:19 that could handle spear and shield. He hired also 04:24 an hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel 04:28 for an hundred talents of silver. But there came a man 04:31 of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel 04:36 go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, 04:39 with all the children of Ephraim But if thou wilt go, do it, 04:44 be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the 04:48 enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down. 04:51 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do 04:56 for the hundred talents which I have given to the army 04:58 of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to 05:02 give thee much more than this. Then Amaziah separated them, 05:07 to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, 05:10 to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled 05:13 against Judah, and they returned home in great anger. 05:16 And Amaziah strengthened himself and led forth his people, 05:20 and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of 05:24 Seir ten thousand. And other ten thousand left alive 05:28 did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them 05:31 unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of 05:35 the rock, that they all were broken in pieces. 05:38 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, 05:41 that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities 05:45 of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote 05:49 3,000 of them and took much spoil. Now it came to pass, 05:53 after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the 05:56 Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, 06:00 and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before 06:05 them and burned incense unto them. Wherefore the anger of 06:10 the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him, 06:14 a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the 06:19 gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people 06:23 out of thine hand? And it came to pass, as he talked with him, 06:27 that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's 06:30 counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? 06:34 Then the Prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath 06:39 determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, 06:42 and hast not hearkened unto my counsel. 06:45 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, 06:50 the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, 06:54 Come, let us see one another in the face. 06:57 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, 07:02 saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar 07:07 that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son 07:12 to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, 07:17 and trode down the thistle. Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast 07:22 smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: 07:26 abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle 07:30 to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, 07:34 and Judah with thee? But Amaziah would not hear; 07:38 for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand 07:41 of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom. 07:44 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another 07:48 in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, 07:52 at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah. And Judah was put to 07:58 the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. 08:02 And Joash, the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah 08:07 the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, 08:10 and brought him to Jerusalam, and brake down the wall of 08:14 Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, 08:16 400 cubits. And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the 08:21 vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, 08:24 and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, 08:28 and returned to Samaria. And Amaziah the son of Joash king of 08:33 Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of 08:37 Israel 15 years. Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, 08:42 first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the 08:46 kings of Judah in Israel? Now after the time that Amaziah 08:51 did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy 08:55 against him in Jerusalam; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent 08:59 to Lachish after him, and slew him there. And they brought 09:03 him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city 09:07 of Judah. Continuing now with chapter 26 09:11 of 2nd Chronicles and this is the King James Version. 09:13 Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was16 years 09:19 old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah. 09:23 He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king 09:28 slept with his fathers. Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he 09:32 began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem 09:36 His mother's name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. 09:40 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, 09:44 according to all that his father Amaziah did. And he sought God 09:49 in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions 09:53 of God: and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to 09:57 prosper. And he went forth and warred against the Philistines, 10:01 and brake down the wall of Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, 10:04 and the wall of Ashdod, and built cities about Ashdod, 10:08 and among the Philistines. And God helped him against the 10:12 Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gurbaal, 10:15 and the Mehunims. And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: 10:20 and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of 10:24 Egypt; for he strengthened himself exceedingly. 10:26 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, 10:32 and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and 10:36 fortified them. Also he built towers in the desert, and digged 10:40 many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, 10:44 and in the plains: husbandmen also and vine dressers in the 10:48 Mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry. Moreover Uzziah 10:53 had an host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, 10:57 according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel 11:01 the scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of 11:05 Hananiah, one of the king's captains. The whole number of 11:09 the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valor were 2,600. 11:14 And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand 11:18 and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with 11:21 mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. 11:25 And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host 11:29 shields, spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, 11:33 and slings to cast stones. And he made in Jerusalem engines, 11:38 invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the 11:43 bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his 11:48 name spread far abroad; for he was marvelously helped, 11:52 till he was strong. But when he was strong, his heart was lifted 11:58 up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the Lord 12:03 his God, and went into the temple of the Lord to burn 12:07 incense upon the altar of incense. And Azariah the priest 12:12 went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the Lord, 12:17 that were valiant men: And they withstood Uzziah the king, 12:21 and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, 12:24 Uzziah, to burn incense unto the Lord, but to the priests 12:27 the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: 12:31 go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; 12:34 neither shall it be for thine honor from the Lord God. 12:38 Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn 12:43 incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy 12:47 even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house 12:51 of the Lord, from beside the incense altar. 12:54 And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked 12:58 upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, 13:01 and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted 13:06 also to go out, because the Lord had smitten him. 13:08 And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, 13:12 and dwelt in a several house, being a leper; for he was cut 13:17 off from the house of the Lord: and Jotham his son was over 13:21 the king's house, judging the people of the land. 13:24 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, 13:28 did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz write. So Uzziah slept 13:34 with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers 13:37 in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; 13:40 for they said, He is a leper: and Jotham his son reigned 13:45 in his stead. Picking up in 2nd Chronicles, 13:48 chapter 27. This is the King James Version. 13:51 Jotham was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, 13:55 and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name 13:59 also was Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok. And he did that which 14:04 was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his 14:06 father Uzziah did: howbeit he entered not into the temple 14:11 of the Lord. And the people did yet corruptly. He built the high 14:16 gate of the house of the Lord, and on the wall of Ophel 14:19 he built much. Moreover he built cities in the mountains 14:22 of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers. 14:26 He fought also with the king of the Ammonites, and prevailed 14:29 against them. And the children of Ammon gave him the same year 14:32 an hundred talent of silver, and 10,000 measures of wheat, 14:36 and 10,000 of barley. So much did the children of Ammon pay 14:39 unto him, both the second year and the third. |
