00:14 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and before we read, let's pray together.
00:20 Dear God in heaven, thank you for bringing us safely again
00:27 to this time together where we can pause from all of the
00:32 different things that we have going on and just sit
00:35 in your presence and listen to your word.
00:37 Please send the Holy Spirit to bring understanding
00:40 to our hearts. Thank you for hearing our prayer. Amen.
00:43 We are reading in the book of Job. Job and his 3 friends
00:48 are having an ongoing discussion about pain and trial and
00:54 suffering that come into the life of someone who
00:57 was obeying God and walking with him. Job is speaking.
01:01 We're starting in chapter 29, with verse 5.
01:05 And Job has just begun by saying "Oh that it were with me still
01:10 the way it was when God was kind to me and had preserved me,
01:15 and kept me when his candle shined upon me.
01:17 We pick up Job's speech, beginning in verse 5.
01:20 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children
01:25 were about me. When I washed my steps with butter,
01:29 and the rock poured out rivers of oil; When I went out to the
01:33 gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
01:36 The young men saw me and hid themselves: and the aged arose,
01:40 and stood up. The princes refrained talking,
01:43 and laid their hand on their mouth. The nobles held their
01:47 peace, and the tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
01:49 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye
01:54 saw me, it gave witness to me: Because I delivered the poor
01:59 that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help
02:01 him. The blessing of him that was ready to perish
02:05 came upon me and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
02:09 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as
02:14 a robe and a diadem. I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I
02:19 to the lame. I was a father to the poor: and the cause which
02:23 I knew not I searched out. And I brake the jaws of the
02:27 wicked and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. Then I said,
02:31 I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days
02:35 as the sand. My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew
02:40 lay all night upon my branch. My glory was fresh in me,
02:44 and my bow was renewed in my hand. Unto me men gave ear,
02:50 and waited and kept silence at my counsel. After my words
02:55 they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
02:59 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their
03:02 mouth wide as for the latter rain. If I laughed on them,
03:07 they believed it not; and the light of my countenance
03:10 they cast not down. I chose out their way, and sat chief,
03:15 and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth
03:20 the mourners. Continuing in Job, chapter 30.
03:25 This is the King James Version. But now they that are younger
03:31 than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have
03:36 disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
03:38 Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me,
03:42 in whom old age was perished? For want and famine they were
03:48 solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time
03:51 desolate and waste. Who cut up mallows by the bushes,
03:55 and juniper roots for their meat. They were driven forth
03:58 from among men, they cried after them as after a thief;
04:00 to dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth,
04:03 and in the rocks. Among the bushes they brayed;
04:06 under the nettles they were gathered together.
04:08 They were children of fools, yea children of base men:
04:12 they were viler than the earth. And now am I their song, yea,
04:18 I am their byword. They abhor me, they flee far from me,
04:23 and spare not to spit in my face. Because he hath loosed
04:28 my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle
04:32 before me. Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away
04:37 my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their
04:40 destruction. They mar my path, they set forward my calamity,
04:45 they have no helper. They came upon me as a wide breaking in
04:50 of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
04:54 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind:
04:59 and my welfare passeth away as a cloud. And now my soul is
05:05 poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold
05:08 upon me. My bones are pierced in me in the night season:
05:13 and my sinews take no rest. By the great force of my disease
05:18 is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar
05:23 of my coat. He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like
05:28 dust and ashes. I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me:
05:33 I stand up, and thou regardest me not. Thou art become cruel
05:38 to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
05:43 Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it,
05:48 and dissolvest my substance. For I know that thou wilt bring
05:53 me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
05:56 Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave,
05:59 though they cry in his destruction.
06:02 Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul
06:08 grieved for the poor? When I looked for good,
06:12 then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light,
06:16 there came darkness. My bowels boiled, and rested not:
06:20 the days of affliction prevented me.
06:24 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried
06:29 in the congregation. I am a brother to dragons,
06:33 and a companion to owls. My skin is black upon me, and my bones
06:39 are burned with heat. My harp also is turned to mourning,
06:43 and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
06:47 We're continuing with Job, chapter 31. This is
06:51 the King James Version. - I made a covenant with mine eyes
06:55 why then should I think upon a maid? For what portion of God
07:00 is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty
07:03 from on high? Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange
07:08 punishment to the workers of iniquity? Doth not he see
07:12 my ways, and count all my steps? If I have walked with vanity,
07:18 If my foot hath hasted to deceit; let me be weighed in
07:22 an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
07:26 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked
07:30 after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
07:34 Then let me sow, and another eat;
07:37 yea, let my offspring be rooted out. If mine heart have been
07:42 deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor's
07:46 door; then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow
07:50 down upon her. For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an
07:54 iniquity to be punished by the judges. For it is a fire that
07:58 consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase
08:02 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my
08:07 maidservant, when they contended with me;
08:09 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth
08:13 what shall I answer him? Did not he that made me in the womb
08:18 make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
08:21 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused
08:26 the eyes of the widow to fail; Or have eaten my morsel myself
08:31 alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
08:33 For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father,
08:37 and I have guided her from my mother's womb;
08:39 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
08:43 or any poor without covering; If his loins have not blessed
08:47 me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
08:50 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
08:53 when I saw my help in the gate: Then let mine arm fall from my
08:58 shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
09:00 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of
09:06 his highness I could not endure. If I have made gold my hope,
09:11 or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
09:16 If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
09:20 and because mine hand had gotten much; If I beheld the sun when
09:25 it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; and my heart
09:29 hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
09:34 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge:
09:38 for I should have denied the God that is above. If I rejoiced
09:42 at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself
09:45 when evil found him: Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin
09:51 by wishing a curse to his soul. If the men of my tabernacle
09:56 said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
10:01 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my
10:04 doors to the traveler. If I covered my transgressions
10:09 as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom: Did I fear a great
10:15 multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me,
10:18 that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
10:21 Oh, that one would hear me! behold, my desire is,
10:26 that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary
10:30 had written a book. Surely I would take it upon my shoulder,
10:34 and bind it as a crown to me. I would declare unto him
10:37 the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
10:41 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise
10:46 thereof complain; If I have eaten the fruits thereof without
10:49 money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
10:53 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of
10:58 barley. The words of Job are ended.
11:02 We're continuing now in Job chapter 32,
11:06 and this is the King James Version.
11:07 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was
11:16 righteous in his own eyes. Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu
11:23 the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram:
11:27 against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified
11:31 himself rather than God. Also against his three friends
11:36 was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer,
11:38 and yet had condemned Job. Now Elihu had waited till Job had
11:44 spoken, because they were elder than he. When Elihu saw that
11:49 there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his
11:52 wrath was kindled. And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite
11:57 answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore
12:03 I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. I said, Days
12:09 should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
12:12 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration
12:16 of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
12:19 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand
12:24 judgment. Therefore I said, Hearken to me;
12:27 I also will shew mine opinion. Behold, I waited for your words;
12:33 I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out
12:37 what to say. Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was
12:41 none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
12:45 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom:
12:48 God thrusteth him down, not man. Now he hath not directed
12:54 his words against me: neither will I answer him with your
12:57 speeches. They were amazed, they answered no more:
13:02 they left off speaking. When I had waited, for they spake not,
13:07 but stood still, and answered no more; I said, I will answer also
13:12 my part, I also will shew my opinion. For I am full of matter
13:17 the spirit within me constraineth me.
13:20 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is
13:24 ready to burst like new bottles. I will speak, that I may be
13:28 refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. Let me not, I pray
13:32 you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering
13:35 titles unto man. For I know not to give flattering titles;
13:39 in so doing my maker would soon take me away.
13:43 We're continuing with Job, chapter 33.
13:47 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken
13:51 to all my words. Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue
13:56 hath spoken in my mouth. My words shall be of the
14:00 uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge
14:03 clearly. The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the
14:07 Almighty hath given me life. If thou canst answer me,
14:11 set thy words in order before me, stand up. Behold,
14:15 I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed
14:21 out of the clay. Behold, my terror shall not make thee
14:25 afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
14:28 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard
14:32 the voice of thy words, saying, I am clean without transgression
14:35 I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
