00:39 Imagine you're living your life, minding your own
00:44 business, and from out of the blue you're accused of
00:47 committing truly horrible crimes.
00:50 That's what happened to a man from the southwest
00:52 of Chicago, IL.
00:54 His life was turned upside down, and people all over
00:57 Chicago were shocked, and horrified.
00:59 In the 1970s, claims were made that Frank Walus had
01:02 collaborated with the Gestapo during World War 2,
01:05 and before long Mr. Walus found himself in court facing very
01:08 serious charges.
01:10 A gruesome picture was painted of him.
01:12 It was said that he had participated in the murder of
01:15 innocent Jews in Poland: and that he had cooperated
01:18 with the Nazis to kill women and children.
01:21 He was identified by several people who claimed to have
01:23 witnessed him carrying out atrocities during the war.
01:27 His US citizenship was revoked, because - it was
01:30 claimed - he didn't reveal his involvement with the
01:32 Nazis when applying to come to the United States.
01:35 It seemed to many that authorities had rooted out
01:37 another war criminal.
01:39 Many believed the case against Frank Walus was
01:41 watertight: a wartime monster, identified by eye-witnesses
01:45 as a killer and a tyrant.
01:47 Well, information came to light that suggested that
01:51 maybe Frank Walus was not the war criminal he had been
01:55 portrayed as.
01:56 In fact, his attorney unearthed the evidence
01:58 demonstrating that Mr Walus wasn't the man who
02:00 participated in cruel beatings and callous murders.
02:04 And a writer in the New York Times said that Mr. Walus was
02:06 in fact a farm labourer rather than a Nazi
02:09 sympathiser at the time the alleged atrocities took place.
02:13 The US government dropped the case against Walus, with
02:16 prosectors saying that Mr Walus had NEVER BEEN at the
02:20 concentration camp in Kielce, Poland, where many of the
02:24 atrocities alleged to have involved Mr Walus had
02:26 taken place.
02:27 Frank Walus died in 1994, at age 72.
02:31 A question - an important question - was being asked at
02:34 Mr Walus' trial.
02:38 Was he the "Beast of Kielce", or in actuality a kind man
02:43 quietly living his life, a Polish immigrant doing his
02:45 best to make a new life in the United States of America?

03:47 today's Bible question.
03:48 It reads like this: My question is simple:
03:52 I believe in God, but is the devil real?
03:57 Yes, he is!
03:59 You'll read in the Bible that there's a very real devil.
04:02 The Bible is unambiguous about that.
04:05 Revelation chapter 12 talks in some detail about this
04:08 being, saying in verse 9, "So the great dragon was cast out
04:12 [that's out of heaven], that old serpent called the devil
04:16 and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world...."
04:19 Notice here, not only is the devil real, but he's referred
04:23 to as a dragon - a prophetic symbol that you'll find in
04:26 the book of Revelation - and he is referred to as the
04:29 serpent, referring to the way he tempted Adam and Eve in
04:32 the Garden of Eden.
04:34 Jesus referenced the devil Himself.
04:37 In John 8 Jesus referred to the devil as a liar, and the
04:40 father of lies.
04:42 Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness -you remember-,
04:45 and you might recall when Jesus was talking to Peter
04:48 and he rebuked him by saying, "Get behind me Satan,"
04:52 in Matthew 16.
04:54 So yes, the devil is real.
04:56 He was once an angel who lived in the presence of God,
04:59 but filled with pride and selfishness he rebelled
05:02 against God and we evicted from heaven.
05:06 Satan is responsible for the evil that is in the world.

06:41 The Bible tells us that every person on earth will one day
06:43 come before God in judgment.
06:46 You read these words in second Corinthians chapter 5
06:49 and verse 10, where the Bible says, "We must all appear
06:54 before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may
06:58 receive the things done in the body, according to what
07:01 he has done, whether good or bad". (NKJV)
07:04 In the book of Revelation, John gives us a bigger
07:06 picture of the judgment.
07:08 Revelation 20:12 says, "And I saw the dead, small and
07:12 great, stand before God; and the books were opened:
07:15 and another book was opened, which is the book of life:
07:18 and the dead were out of those things written in the
07:21 books, according to their works". ( KJV )
07:24 You know, many people are concerned by the idea that
07:27 God is going to examine their lives.
07:29 They worry that things will go against them
07:31 when God judges.
07:33 If you were appearing in an earthly court, you might be
07:36 worried about what the prosecution had dug up to use
07:38 as evidence against you.
07:40 But what do you think GOD might be able to find against
07:43 you?
07:44 Now here's where we must keep something in mind.
07:46 God isn't looking to do all He can to condemn people.
07:51 He's doing everything He can to SAVE people.
07:54 Most people are familiar with that famous verse John 3:16.
07:56 John 3:17 says this.
08:02 "For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the
08:08 world, but that the world through Him might be saved."
08:13 No, God didn't sent Jesus to the world to condemn us, but
08:16 for the purpose of seeing people saved from sin
08:19 and its penalty.
08:21 So what, then, is this judgment all about?
08:24 A 'good' person might say, "I am a good person and surely
08:28 judgment is for other people and not me."
08:31 Well, let's think about this.
08:32 In Matthew 7:21 Jesus says that there is going to come a
08:37 time when many people come to Him and say, "Lord, Lord,
08:38 haven't we done wonderful works in your name?"
08:42 They talk about having done such things as healing the sick
08:43 and working miracles - good things, for sure!
08:45 And yet Jesus surprises these people by saying,
08:46 "I never knew you!"
08:53 There's a question as to who they really are.
08:56 Maybe they HAD done SOME things in their lives that were
08:58 laudable.
09:00 But here, they run to Jesus and call Him 'Lord', while
09:04 Jesus knows what they're REALLY like.
09:06 They're pretenders.
09:08 Phonies.
09:10 There's a Bible story that illustrations this perfectly.
09:15 The children of Israel entered the promised land,
09:17 and not long after they're approached by a group of
09:19 people claiming to be from a distant country.
09:22 "We heard of you, and of your great God, and we traveled
09:25 a great distance to join ourselves to you
09:27 & be your servants.
09:29 And Joshua says, "Great!
09:31 Glad to have you on board.
09:32 Welcome to Canaan!"
09:34 And then, not too long afterward, it comes to light
09:37 that these people ARE NOT pilgrims from a distant
09:40 country - they're the Gibeonites, from very nearby
09:43 in Canaan.
09:45 They were enemies of God!
09:47 But Joshua never checked.
09:50 He took their word for it!
09:53 And so the Gibeonites became joined to God's people, and
09:55 even though a system was devised to make that work as
09:56 well as possible, it caused some real problems.
10:00 As much as God might like for everyone to be saved eternally,
10:05 He knows - and we know - that God cannot allow
10:09 a bunch of pretenders into His kingdom.
10:11 So, before eternity comes there's going to be a
10:14 judgment, a time when God can ascertain who really has
10:18 chosen Him genuinely, and a time when He can separate
10:21 out, if you like, those who really are not true believers
10:24 as they claim to be.
10:25 This isn't God trying to find out something He doesn't
10:27 already know.
10:29 This is much like an audit, if you like, where God reviews
10:33 the records, reviews the claims that people have made
10:37 and see how those claims stack up against reality.
10:40 Simple example: when you cross a border and enter another
10:43 country, you usually have to hand over some
10:46 identification and perhaps some documentation.
10:49 The last time I crossed into Canada from the United States,
10:52 I arrived at the border claiming I'm a trustworthy
10:55 guy, that I'm not there to cause trouble, and
10:58 that I'm wanting to go to Canada for legitimate reasons
11:00 and not to be a hindrance or a nuisance.
11:05 So, I hand over some documents, and then the
11:06 border guard asks me some questions.
11:08 "Why are you coming into Canada?
11:10 Why are you crossing the border at this time of night?
11:13 How long have you known that guy you're with and why are
11:15 you with him?"
11:16 Was it really necessary for the border guard to ask me
11:18 those questions?
11:21 Of course not!
11:22 He COULD have just TRUSTED me, right?
11:28 So why didn't he?
11:29 Why not just take my word for things?
11:30 Because, I might not have been telling the truth!
11:33 How does he know that I'm not trouble?
11:36 So he checks out my documents, looks at his
11:38 computer, asks me some questions, and then, when
11:41 he's satisfied I'm on the level and that I'm not a
11:43 threat to Canadian national security, he let's me into
11:46 the country.
11:47 That's really how the judgment works.
11:49 You've got a mass of people who claim that they're loyal
11:51 to God and won't pose a threat to the stability of
11:54 heaven.
11:55 Should we ask God to let those people into heaven
11:58 BASED ON THEIR WORD?
12:00 Or would it be slightly more responsible of God to look at
12:03 the documentation - the books of record - and perhaps do a
12:06 little investigating to see if Person A really is what he
12:09 or she claims to be?
12:11 And let's take that up a notch.
12:14 Not only is it important for that border guard to ensure
12:18 justice is done, it is also important that he BE SEEN to
12:23 ensure justice is done.
12:25 God could just wave a lot of people through and into the
12:28 kingdom knowing they're ok, but there's a universe
12:31 looking on - and it is vital that God Himself is not only
12:35 just, but that He is SEEN TO BE JUST in the process of
12:40 judging the world.
12:41 The Bible says in Romans 3:23, you might know this
12:44 verse, "...all have sinned, and come short of the glory
12:48 of God." KJV and then just a page or
12:50 so over, the Bible says, (Romans 6:23), "For the wages
12:55 of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
12:57 through Jesus Christ our Lord."
13:01 So in the judgment process- in this auditing process -
13:06 God is looking to see whether we've really chosen his gift
13:08 of eternal life through Jesus, or, whether we've only
13:11 made some sort of hollow claim to God's grace.
13:14 God is asking the question, "Who, really, are you?"
13:20 It reminds me of that 70s song by The Who, who sang,
13:23 "Oh, I really want to know - Who Are You?"
13:26 Now, I'm not sure how many times The Who have popped up
13:29 in a discussion about God's working with human beings,
13:31 but that's really what God is asking in the judgment.
13:34 "Who are You?
13:35 You say you're one thing, but because the truth could be
13:38 otherwise, I'm going to conduct this audit.
13:41 And we'll find out who you are.
13:43 And if you are who you claim to be - if you're really my
13:46 child - then you've got nothing to fear."
13:50 Let me ask you, Have you ever been audited?
13:54 A few years ago I got a letter from the taxman
13:56 telling me certain aspects of my tax return were going to
13:59 be audited.
14:01 Imagine that - the IRS going over my tax return with a
14:04 fine-toothed comb.
14:06 What might they find?

16:48 The New York Times recently ran a story

16:54 Originally from Guyana, Seemona Sumasar was an
16:57 immigrant success story - a former Wall Street analyst
17:01 who was now running a restaurant and doing very
17:03 well for herself.
17:04 When she was arrested and jailed, and found herself
17:06 facing up to 25 years in prison, she just couldn't
17:09 understand what was going on.
17:11 Even though she didn't have a criminal record, she spent
17:13 seven months in jail, before it came to light that an
17:16 angry former boyfriend framed her for a series of crimes
17:20 she did not commit, in what New York City prosecutors
17:23 called 'one of the most elaborate framing cases ever
17:26 seen'.
17:28 Ms Sumasar was completely innocent.
17:31 The question though was asked, who was the real
17:34 Seemona Sumasar?
17:36 And one day, that question will be asked of you and me.
17:39 Today we're discussing the Biblical idea that one day
17:42 God is going to judge everyone on the earth.
17:45 2 Corinthians 5:10 says that, "[W]e must all appear before
17:48 the judgment seat of Christ."
17:50 And why is that, do you think?

17:56 because there are certain things He doesn't know?

18:00 No.
18:02 But perhaps God is making sure that the claims people
18:04 make about themselves as being His children are
18:08 actually accurate claims.
18:10 And perhaps God is going through this audit of
18:13 heaven's books or record because its in the best

18:17 through some type of process to ensure only the RIGHT
18:20 people are granted everlasting life.

18:29 I would, I think.
18:30 I think I'd be satisfied if God told me He had done the

18:37 there that you never thought would be there?
18:40 Or what if some people you were certain would be there
18:42 weren't there?
18:44 You might have questions.
18:47 Under those circumstances I think I might.
18:50 You can see how a formal auditing process - a judgment
18:53 process if you want to call it that - might be very
18:57 helpful in answering a lot of questions.
18:59 Not questions that God has, but questions that we might
19:02 have when we arrive in glory.
19:04 You see, the judgment isn't something you need to fear.

19:50 Its like a non-drinker being asked to take a breath test -

19:59 claimed to be followers of Jesus really are followers of
20:02 Jesus.
20:03 And if they are, there's nothing at all to fear.

20:43 I'd probably feel as though I was about to lose the case.
20:46 There'd be nothing I could do to get myself out of my
20:50 predicament.
20:51 But just when I feel it is all over for me maybe Jesus
20:55 would say something like, "Father, yes you can save

20:58 Yes I know John Bradshaw has sinned and I know his sins
21:01 were serious, but I died for him.
21:05 He has repented, and has been forgiven.
21:07 He belongs to me.
21:10 I bought him with my life."
21:13 Let's look at a wonderful Bible text that helps to
21:16 explain this a little more clearly.
21:18 In your imagination think of Jesus suffering on the cross.
21:20 Of course he was suffering from great physical agony.
21:23 Think about what he had just gone through.
21:25 But listen to this.
21:27 Psalm 40:12 says, "For innumerable evils have
21:33 surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I
21:37 am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my
21:39 head: therefore my heart fails me."
21:43 Jesus says "My" iniquities were on Him -
21:49 but we know He didn't sin.
21:50 Those were our sins that he took upon himself at the
21:53 cross.
21:54 Isaiah wrote that Jesus "was wounded for our
21:56 transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:"
21:59 The burden of our sins was so great that after only 6 hours
22:03 on that terrible cross he suffered from heart failure
22:06 and died.
22:08 Jesus took our sins upon himself.
22:12 So when our names come up in judgment God checks to see if
22:16 we have given up our sins and handed them over to Jesus and
22:20 then lived in connection with him.
22:23 That's all.
22:24 Micah chapter 7 and verse 19 says "He will turn again, he
22:28 will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our
22:31 iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the
22:34 depths of the sea."
22:36 You know, there's a place where the Pacific Ocean is
22:39 nearly 36,000 feet deep.
22:43 11,000 meters!
22:44 Deeper than Mount Everest is told. That's deep.
22:47 But what God wants us to catch here is that if we
22:49 confess our sins then he will take our sins away and when
22:51 our names come up in the judgment he will declare that
22:54 we are clean and we belong to him.
22:58 Should we fear God?
22:59 And fear judgment?
23:02 I remember a teacher at my High School that we used to
23:04 call Bookes.
23:05 He walked straight and always carried an umbrella and we
23:08 all had a deadly fear of him.
23:10 We pretty much tried to keep out of his way in case he
23:12 pointed that umbrella at one of us.
23:14 If that happened your number was up.
23:17 Punishment would follow.
23:18 Of course that never ever happened to me.
23:21 (smile) But remember - God isn't looking for reasons to
23:24 punish us.
23:26 He's already got all the reasons He needs!
23:29 God is looking to save us - to get us into His eternal

23:54 My father at the time worked on the old fashion telephone

24:02 it was me."
24:05 "Okay, my boy," Dad said.
24:07 "Lets just leave it there."
24:09 Dad gave my brother some insight that day into what
24:12 God is like.
24:13 We can go to God and we can say, "Lord, it was me."
