00:07 It has stood the test of time.
00:12 God's book. 00:13 The Bible. 00:17 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:22 It is written sharing hope around the globe. 00:36 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:37 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 00:40 And let me say, "Happy New Year." 00:42 "Another year over, a new one just begun," as John Lennon 00:46 once sang. 00:47 This is the time of year when masses of people make New 00:50 Year's resolutions, promises about what they're determined 00:52 to do differently or better in the new year. 00:55 After over-eating during the holiday season it's not 00:57 uncommon for people to make resolutions about eating - or 01:00 not eating - and losing weight and exercising. 01:03 Some people vow to save more money and spend less money. 01:08 Or they're going to be nicer to their spouse or more 01:10 patient with their children. 01:12 But here's what we know: a lot of New Year's resolutions 01:16 just don't work out so well, do they? 01:19 There's something about promises and our ability to 01:22 keep them. 01:23 Now today, I'm going to tell you about some promises that 01:26 never fail and are always kept. 01:30 Really, promises that are always kept. 01:34 But first... 01:35 let's go back in time. 01:38 It was 1988. 01:39 It was an election year. 01:41 And being an election year, politicians were saying what 01:43 they needed to say to build support heading towards the 01:45 election. 01:47 At the Republican National Convention George Bush senior 01:49 accepted the Republican Party's nomination to be 01:52 their presidential candidate. 01:54 Peggy Noonan had written a speech for Mr. Bush that 01:56 reinforced one of Mr. Bush's key themes, one of them being 02:01 the idea that he would not increase taxes for Americans. 02:05 During the speech, Mr. Bush spoke with authority and 02:08 uttered that now famous phrase: "Read my lips: no new 02:11 taxes!" 02:15 The speech went well and Mr. 02:17 Bush became President Bush. 02:18 But two years later with the nation facing a serious 02:23 budget deficit, President Bush was under pressure from 02:26 politicians on both sides of the aisle. 02:28 So as part of the 1990 budget agreement, several taxes were 02:32 actually raised. 02:35 The promise wasn't kept. 02:38 I'm not trying to criticize former President Bush. 02:41 The truth is - and perhaps this is especially true in 02:43 politics - some promises can be very hard to keep. 02:47 But whether it's Pete Rose insisting he never bet on 02:50 baseball - and then later admitting that he did - or 02:53 the father of "Balloon Boy" claiming that his son was 02:56 inside a helium-filled balloon floating 7000 feet 02:59 above Colorado - when the boy in fact was safe at home, 03:04 there's just something about a broken promise. 03:07 The Bible weighs in on the subject of promises. 03:11 The Bible stresses a person should keep his or her word. 03:15 The Ten Commandments say, "Thou shalt not bear false 03:19 witness", which of course would mean that a person 03:22 should keep their promises (as far as they're able 03:24 to do so). 03:25 Ananias and Saphira lost their lives because they lied 03:28 about a broken promise. 03:31 Whether its a politician promising to end poverty or a 03:33 Dad promising to bring home ice cream, broken promises 03:38 just don't sit well. 03:40 In the Christian faith a lot of people make promises that 03:43 they just can't keep. 03:44 It happens every day. 03:46 It's like those New Year's Resolutions to drink less 03:48 coffee or eat less candy: a person might promise God or 03:51 promise themselves that from now on they're going to pray 03:55 more, stop swearing, control their temper or quit alcohol, 03:59 and what so often happens? 04:01 You discover that your promises are like ropes of 04:03 sand. 04:05 And you feel like a failure. 04:06 And often, all sorts of thoughts start flooding the 04:09 mind when a person feels like a failure as a Christian - 04:14 I'll never be good enough, God doesn't love me, why even 04:18 bother.... 04:20 If there a way out of this? 04:22 Are there promises that can be kept? 04:24 Yes there is, and yes there are. 04:26 There ARE promises that can be kept. 04:31 Let's talk about them in just a moment. 04:32 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says "It is written 'Man 04:38 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 04:41 proceeds out of the mouth of God'." 04:43 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 04:47 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 04:50 especially for busy people like you. 04:52 Look for Every Word on selected networks or watch it 04:55 on-line everyday on our website itiswritten.com. 04:59 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 05:02 Watch Every Word. 05:03 You'll be glad you did. 05:04 Here is a sample A man in Iran was so angry 05:16 with a woman for rejecting his marriage proposal that he 05:18 threw acid into her face, and blinded her. 05:22 Under Islamic law, eye-for-an-eye retribution is 05:25 possible, and as a doctor was about to put several drops of 05:28 acid into one of the man's eyes in order to blind him by 05:31 order of the court, the woman stated that she had forgiven 05:34 her attacker and didn't want him to be disfigured. 05:36 She said, "When you're in a position of power it is best 05:40 to pardon." 05:41 How true. 05:42 In the Lord's prayer we pray, "Forgive us our debts as we 05:45 forgive our debtors." 05:46 Matthew 6:12 God asks us to forgive. 05:50 Sometimes it is difficult, but it is God's way. 05:52 Unforgiveness cripples, while forgiveness sets the forgiver 05:56 free. 05:57 I hope you'll choose to forgive if you have the 06:00 opportunity or the need to do so. 06:03 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 06:05 Let's live today by Every Word. 06:07 Thanks for joining me today and Happy New year 06:11 Many people have made New Year's resolutions that 06:14 haven't worked out too well as the new year progressed. 06:17 I'm going to read more. 06:19 I'm going to watch less television. 06:21 I'm going to eat better. 06:23 And I know many people have taken a similar approach to 06:25 their spiritual life. 06:26 "I'm going to be a better person. 06:28 I'm going to speak more kindly to my wife. 06:30 I'm going to stop losing my temper. 06:32 I'll pray more. 06:33 I'll be more like Jesus." 06:34 And before very long, it's discovered it isn't as easy 06:37 to keep those promises as a person might once have hoped. 06:41 It's like the situation the apostle Paul found himself in. 06:44 He wrote in Romans 7:15. 06:47 For what I am doing, I do not understand. 06:52 For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I 06:56 hate, that I do. 06:58 Romans 7:15 NKJV A few verses later he said this, "For the 07:04 good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will 07:08 NOT to do, that I practice." 07:11 (That's Romans 7:19, NKJV). 07:14 His problem wasn't a lack of intent or wanting all the 07:16 wrong things. 07:18 You can be the most sincere, earnest, good-hearted person 07:21 in the world, and still find that your good intentions and 07:23 your high hopes can fall dishearteningly short. 07:27 But a moment ago I mentioned to you that there are 07:30 promises that CAN be kept. 07:32 Understanding this is crucial to living a healthy, happy 07:37 spiritual life. 07:39 I'm going to share with you a couple of Bible verses. 07:42 We'll go to the book of Hebrews and Chapter 8, 07:45 Hebrews 8:6 the Bible says this, But now hath he 07:52 obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He 07:55 is the mediator of a better covenant, which was 07:58 established upon better promises. 08:02 Notice what it says. 08:03 The New Covenant was established upon "better 08:05 promises." 08:07 Stay with me here. 08:09 Back at the time Moses was going up on the mountain to 08:12 receive the Ten Commandments, the people told God, 08:16 "Everything the Lord has said, we will do!" 08:19 Now THERE'S a resolution! 08:21 Whatever God says, we'll do it. 08:23 In the next chapter, God gives Moses the Ten 08:26 Commandments. 08:27 But Moses was up on that mountain for longer than the 08:29 Israelites were expecting. 08:30 They ended up saying, As for Moses, we don't know what has 08:32 become of him. 08:34 So they made a golden calf and worshiped that. 08:38 One day they're saying, Whatever God says, We'll do 08:40 it! 08:42 And days later they're bowing down and worshiping an idol. 08:44 Now, was there anything wrong with their promise? 08:47 No, it was a good promise. 08:49 A great promise. 08:50 "Whatever God says, we'll do it!" 08:52 That's a great attitude. 08:54 But at the same time, it was a terrible promise. 08:58 I'll tell you why. 08:59 But first, let's consider another Bible verse. 09:02 It's 2 Peter 1:4, where the Bible says, Whereby are given 09:11 unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by 09:16 these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having 09:21 escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 09:25 2 Peter 1:4 KJV Now, lets see something here. 09:29 The Bible tells us that there are some promises that work, 09:33 and that never fail. 09:34 And they're certainly not your promises or my promises! 09:38 The promises that never fail are GOD's promises. 09:41 They never fail. 09:42 The Bible says this, God is not a man, that He should 09:46 lie. 09:47 Numbers 23:19 KJV What God says is TRUE. 09:52 What God promises HAPPENS. 09:55 And if you understand this, you'll never have to make God 09:59 another promise again. 10:01 The fact of the matter is that God doesn't even want 10:05 you to make promises to Him. 10:06 God simply wants you to believe His promises to you! 10:09 And God's promises are incredible. 10:13 I'm going to share some life-changing promises with 10:17 you in just a moment. 10:35 I know the Bible says that if we confess our sins we are 10:41 forgiven, but why do I still feel guilty about something I 10:43 did years ago? 10:45 How do I really know that I have been forgiven? 10:48 Will this feeling ever go away? 10:52 I think first thing you want to do is to figure out is if 10:54 that's actually guilt that you feel. 10:56 If it is, then very likely that feeling will go away. 11:00 But if you simply feel bad about something you've done, 11:02 and that still bugs you, maybe the feeling will never 11:06 go away. 11:06 Maybe you don't want it to go away. 11:08 If you have confessed that sin, then you can believe 11:11 that God forgives you. 11:13 You know how you can believe that? 11:16 Because God says so. 11:19 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sin, He is 11:23 faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us 11:27 from all unrighteousness. 11:28 That's that then. 11:29 You confess, and God forgives. 11:31 God said so. 11:33 So, you still feel guilty? 11:34 If those feelings come, or if you feel doubt about it, then 11:37 remind yourself of the Bible verse. 11:39 Psalm 86:5 says that God is "good, and ready to forgive." 11:41 Matthew 12:31 says that "all manner of sin and blasphemy 11:44 shall be forgiven unto men." 11:45 In another place the Bible says that where sin abounds, 11:46 grace does much more abound. 11:51 In other words, if you can sin it, God can forgive it. 11:59 He delights to and He will if you're serious about 12:04 repentance. 12:05 You can know that you are really forgiven because the 12:08 Bible says you are really forgiven. 12:12 You know, to trust your feelings is a dangerous 12:15 business. 12:16 You don't want to do that. 12:18 And keep in mind that there's a devil the Bible calls the 12:21 "accuser" - you can know that he doesn't want you to know 12:25 that you are forgiven and cleansed. 12:28 If you have feelings that you're not forgiven, take 12:30 those to God right away. 12:31 Yield them to Him, and those feelings will dissipate. 12:36 And as I said, it could be that those feelings are 12:39 simply feelings of uneasiness about what you've done. 12:42 If you've done something terrible, those feelings 12:45 aren't such bad things. 12:46 They'll help you to remember how awful sin is, and they'll 12:50 act as strong reminders to keep you close to Jesus. 12:54 If you have a question you'd like answered, go to our 12:57 website - www.ItIsWritten.com and click on the questions 13:00 tab when people are making promises 13:26 that they're not likely to keep - we call them New 13:29 Year's Resolutions - I'm going to share with you how 13:32 you can experience a New Year's REVOLUTION. 13:36 If you've ever had good intentions to "do better" as 13:38 a Christian, only to see those intentions fall flat, I 13:42 want you to know how you can turn that around. 13:46 Peter wrote that it is through GOD'S promises that 13:50 we can become "partakers of the divine nature." 13:54 Peter was someone who knew something about making 13:57 promises to God and then breaking them spectacularly. 14:02 Remember, Peter was the one who said to Jesus in Matthew 14:03 26:35, Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny 14:05 You! 14:06 Matthew 26:35 NKJV And we know how that worked out... 14:14 But Peter eventually got it right, he figured it out, and 14:16 he understood the power of the promises of God. 14:20 There are literally thousands of promises in the Bible. 14:23 Let's look at a few of them and see how they can make a 14:25 difference in your life. 14:27 It's recorded in Hebrews 13:5 that Jesus had said, "I will 14:30 never leave you, nor forsake you." 14:37 Hebrews 13:5 NKJV So even if you feel lonely or abandoned, 14:40 God has said that He will never leave you. 14:43 He's with you. 14:44 You are not alone. 14:46 The One who wrapped the rings around Saturn has told you 14:48 that He cares for you. 14:50 Now that we know that there's no place for you wondering, 14:53 worrying or doubting. 14:55 God has said it, it has to be true, you can believe it and 14:58 that's that. 15:01 Now let's consider the case of someone who made a New 15:04 Year's Resolution to, let's say... 15:06 be nicer to their spouse. 15:07 That person is talking about changing their behavior, but 15:10 they'll soon realize they don't have the capacity to do 15:12 that. 15:14 They'll try and try and fail and fail. 15:18 And most people become sick of failing. 15:21 Let's look at TWO promises that can help with that. 15:25 In 1 Corinthians chapter 10, we read these words, this is 15:28 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has overtaken you 15:34 except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who 15:40 will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are 15:43 able, but with the temptation will also make the way of 15:47 escape, that you may be able to bear it. 15:50 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV I don't want you to miss this, 15:53 because this is a promise made to you by God. 15:56 "God... 15:57 will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are 16:01 able." 16:02 So now I know that, I know that when I'm tempted to lose 16:05 my cool, I don't have to fall. 16:07 Based on what the Bible says, I am able to deal with this. 16:10 Remember what we read - God will make a way of escape. 16:14 It's there in the Bible. 16:15 It's a promise. 16:17 We can successfully endure the temptation because we've 16:19 been promised by God that He will give us a way of escape. 16:23 And that way of escape is.... 16:25 Jesus. 16:27 When temptation comes we can call on Christ, and He will 16:30 deliver us every time. 16:32 "But John, you just don't know how tough it is for 16:34 me..." 16:35 I'm sure I don't, but I know Jesus, and I know how tough 16:38 HE is. 16:39 And that's all I need to know. 16:41 Jude 24, let's read that, Jude 24, that's one verse, 16:46 Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling. 16:48 Jude 1:24 NKJV So if you've been visiting the wrong kind 16:53 of websites, or if you've not been able to keep out of the 16:56 bars or the nightclubs, God says that HE can keep you 17:00 from falling. 17:02 That is God's promise to you. 17:05 I spoke with a woman once who asked me if God would forgive 17:09 her for a sin that she had committed. 17:12 So I assured her God would. 17:13 She said, "But Pastor John, it's a terrible sin." 17:17 I said, "That's no problem because God is in the 17:19 business of forgiving terrible sins." 17:22 And then I asked her, "Okay, have you confessed your sin." 17:26 "Yes," she told me, "many times." 17:28 She told me that this terrible thing she had done 17:31 happened 50 years ago and that she had confessed it 17:36 every day, sometimes many times a day. 17:39 "Good grief," I said, "That's over 18,000 times you've 17:42 confessed this to God!" 17:43 And she said, "Yep, that's about right pastor." 17:47 So I asked her if she believed God. 17:49 And she said, "Yes, of course I do." 17:51 I said to her, "Well, based on what you're telling me, 17:54 you don't believe God at all. 17:56 In fact, you believe God is a liar." 17:59 So I took the Bible, I opened the Bible to 1 John 1:9, and 18:02 read to her, the verse begins by saying "If we confess our 18:07 sin..." 18:08 I said, "Have you done that?" 18:10 Yes, I've done that. 18:11 Alright, then. 18:14 "If we confess our sin He is faithful and just to FORGIVE 18:16 us our sin, and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness." 18:22 "I asked her: Does God tell the truth?" 18:26 Yes." 18:27 "All the time?" 18:29 "Yes, I believe so." 18:31 "Well here, I said, God is telling you that He forgives 18:33 you. 18:35 And if He has forgiven you, why in the world would you go 18:38 back to Him and confess again, as though you don't 18:41 believe the promise that God has made to you." 18:43 I encouraged her to believe God's simple, powerful 18:46 promise and not give this thing another thought. 18:51 And the next time I saw her, she told me that that night, 18:54 that night we spoke, she told me that she had the best 18:58 night's sleep she'd had in 50 years. 19:02 You see, when God has promised, we can believe His 19:05 promises. 19:07 When God says He's going to forgive your sins, you can 19:09 afford to believe that. 19:11 Instead of making promises to God, you can simply believe 19:13 God's promises to you, and claim them, and expect God to 19:18 work powerfully in your life. 19:20 There are thousands more promises of God in the Bible. 19:24 Let's look at.... 19:25 just a couple more in just a moment. 19:30 There's a rising sense of anxiety in our world and 19:33 people are wondering where we are headed. 19:35 If you're looking for answers, you won't want to 19:38 miss Revelation Today, a dynamic satellite event with 19:40 John Bradshaw, beginning January 20, 2012. 19:43 Discover what the future holds and learn to understand 19:46 Bible prophecy. 19:47 Revelation Today will be broadcast live from Las 19:50 Vegas. 19:51 Plan now to attend this powerful event via television 19:53 or watch it online. 19:55 For more information visit: itiswritten.com 20:00 As a New Year greets us, I want to 20:02 encourage you today to trust God's promises. 20:06 This is a time when people typically make resolutions 20:09 that usually don't meet with a lot of success. 20:12 But you can have a New Year's REVolution if you experience 20:16 the power of God's promises in your life. 20:20 Philippians 4:19 says is a wonderful promise of God, 20:24 Philippians 4:19, My God shall supply all your need, 20:29 according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20:34 Philippians 4:19 KJV And that's a promise. 20:36 You can take this promise to God just like you'd take a 20:39 check to the bank, and you can expect God to provide 20:41 what He has promised to provide. 20:43 In James 4:7, the Bible says this, Resist the devil, and 20:51 he will flee from you. 20:54 And then you will read in the book of Malachi where God 20:57 promises us that when we tithe and give offerings, He 21:01 will open up the windows of heaven and pour out so much 21:04 blessing that we won't have room enough to receive it.. 21:09 God has promised! 21:10 You can expect Him to keep His promises. 21:13 And when you base your Christian experience on what 21:15 God has promised YOU, you're going to meet with victory 21:18 and success and a whole lot less frustration than you 21:21 would meet with if you continue trying to keep 21:24 promises to God. 21:25 Now a word about those last two promises - notice 21:28 something about them. 21:29 James said, "Submit yourselves therefore to God." 21:33 And then he said, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from 21:35 you." 21:36 Malachi said that when we are faithful to God with our 21:39 finances, then He is able to bless us. 21:42 It's like when James said, Humble yourself in the sight 21:45 of the Lord and" THEN "He shall lift you up." 21:49 One thing we've got to understand is that the 21:51 promises of God come with conditions attached. 21:54 Now I'm not saying that God loves you based on condition 21:56 or accepts you based on condition but w hen it comes 21:59 to God's promises, a person wouldn't live with disregard 22:02 for God and then claim the promises of God. 22:06 That would not be faith, that would be presumption. 22:10 What faith does is it claims the promises of God, the 22:14 promises God makes, and then makes a surrender to God. 22:19 If we come to God in faith, believing His promises, and 22:21 then let God work in our lives in a powerful way - so 22:25 that His will can be done - then we are going to see 22:28 miracles take place. 22:32 Now one of the best books that I've ever read that 22:35 touches on this subject is a book called "Steps to 22:38 Christ." 22:39 I want to share a passage with you from that powerful 22:41 little book. 22:44 "You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in 22:47 moral power, in slavery to doubt, and controlled by the 22:51 habits of your life of sin. 22:53 Your promises and resolutions are like ropes of sand. 22:59 You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your 23:03 affections. 23:05 The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited 23:08 pledges weakens your confidence in your own 23:12 sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot accept 23:16 you; but you need not despair. 23:20 What you need to understand is the true force of the 23:23 will. 23:25 This is the governing power in the nature of man, the 23:28 power of decision, or of choice. 23:32 Everything depends on the right action of the will. 23:34 The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to 23:39 exercise. 23:40 You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give 23:45 to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. 23:50 You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to 23:53 will and to do according to His good pleasure. 23:56 Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control 24:01 of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be centered 24:04 upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him." 24:09 SC 47 Isn't that encouraging? 24:11 If you'll give God your will, God will work in your life. 24:15 Today, believe His promises to you, and let God ákeepá 24:19 His promises to you. 24:21 Concentration camp survivor Corrie Ten Boom is quoted as 24:24 having said, "When I try, I fail. 24:28 When I trust, He succeeds." 24:31 I heard it said that Corrie Ten Boom would go to the 24:34 Bible, find a promise, put her finger on it, hold it up 24:37 to God and say, "Here, you read what it says!" 24:42 That's bold. 24:43 But that's faith. 24:45 That's relying on God's promises. 24:47 Your experience doesn't have to be a cycle of try and 24:50 fail. 24:51 You can claim the promises of God and ask God to keep His 24:54 promises to you in your life. 24:56 And you know what? 24:57 God will always keep His promises. 24:59 He always does. 25:03 In today's program I quoted from one of my favorite 25:05 need you to work powerfully. 26:51 So many people today under the weight of burdens and 26:55 pressures and struggles and stresses, and feeling failure 27:02 and like they are falling more than they are standing 27:11 up. 27:12 Lord, in your Word you have promised us that you could 27:14 straighten us out and keep us close to your heart. 27:16 So please do that and allow us to experience spiritual 27:19 victory in our lives based on your Word as You keep your 27:21 promises to us. 27:23 We thank you for them and we praise You and we pray in 27:26 Jesus' name, Amen. 27:48 Thanks for being with me today. 27:49 I look forward to seeing you next time. 27:51 Until then, remember... 27:52 It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by 27:57 every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. |
