00:07 It has stood the test of time.
00:12 God4s Book, the Bible. 00:17 Still relevant in today4s complex world. 00:22 It Is Written sharing hope around the globe. 00:36 I'm John Bradshaw, thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 00:41 This really happened. 00:41 A computer glitch caused the lights to come on and the 00:44 doors to open at a major supermarket at one o'clock in 00:47 the morning when the supermarket was supposed to 00:50 be closed. 00:51 It didn't take long and in the people came - about 50 00:54 shoppers altogether. 00:55 And before long it became obvious to the shoppers that 00:58 there were no staff present. 01:00 They were there alone. 01:02 25 people left their shopping behind when they realized 01:05 there was nobody there for them to actually pay. 01:07 Twelve shoppers did pay for their groceries by using the 01:10 self-service check-outs. 01:12 But for a dozen or so people, the allure of free groceries 01:16 (and whatever else they managed to jam into their 01:18 shopping carts) was just too much. 01:21 Knowing full well they were stealing, they made off with 01:24 free groceries - not stopping to think that security 01:27 cameras had recorded everything. 01:29 Now that would be a temptation, wouldn't it? 01:31 Some people probably felt like it was a dream come true 01:34 - alone in an open supermarket and nobody there 01:38 to stop you taking home whatever you wanted. 01:41 The temptation proved to be too strong for them. 01:45 And that's temptation for you. 01:47 It comes in many different ways, and if differing 01:49 degrees of seriousness. 01:51 The temptation to gossip; the temptation to take just one 01:54 more piece of chocolate cake; the temptation to get 01:57 revenge; the temptation to cheat. 02:00 In 1980 a woman crossed the line in the Boston marathon 02:03 in the impressive time of 2 hours 31 minutes and 56 02:06 seconds - the fastest female time in history for the 02:09 Boston marathon and the third fastest marathon ever run by 02:12 a woman. 02:14 But people noticed she didn't look as tired as someone 02:16 ought to look for having just run 26 miles. 02:19 She didn't look as physically fit as a marathon runner 02:22 should either. 02:23 Her resting heart rate of 76 was much higher than your 02:27 typical marathon runner, and her time for the Boston was 02:31 25 minutes faster than her time in the New York marathon 02:34 six months earlier - a massive improvement. 02:37 Unbelievable, really. 02:38 And then, two university students said they saw the 02:41 woman emerge from a crowd of spectators half a mile from 02:44 the finish and run only the last half-mile of the race. 02:47 It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what 02:51 happened. 02:52 She wanted the glory, but she was never going to be good 02:55 enough to win a major marathon, so she was tempted 02:58 to fabricate the whole thing. 03:00 And she yielded to the temptation. 03:02 You know, a similar thing happened in October of 2011 03:05 at the Kielder Marathon in northern England, about 60 03:08 miles from Newcastle. 03:09 It was eventually discovered that the 31 year old man who 03:12 finished third had actually got on a bus at the 20-mile 03:17 mark, got off the bus just before the finish and hidden 03:20 behind a tree, and then jumped out into the race and 03:23 came in in third place. 03:25 Now I get it and you probably do too. 03:27 After running 20 miles YOU might be tempted to take a 03:30 bus too. 03:31 Now being tempted, though, doesn't mean you'd 03:33 necessarily do it. 03:35 Being tempted and actually doing a certain thing are two 03:38 very different things. 03:39 You might be tempted to cheat on your taxes, fudge an 03:43 expense report, say you've cleaned your room when you 03:46 haven't, sneak an extra piece of pie, not tell the man at 03:50 the checkout that he's given you too much change... 03:53 Or cheat on your spouse or embezzle money. 03:57 And you might not do any of it, but you may be tempted. 04:01 But temptation is the doorway to sin. 04:04 It doesn't always lead to sin, but it so often does, 04:07 and the consequences can be disastrous. 04:10 I just read a story about a teenage girl who killed a 04:13 child because she said she wanted to know what it felt 04:16 like to kill. 04:18 Now, you'd think this child has got some pretty intense 04:20 issues, but let's be honest - she's not the first person 04:24 who's thought about taking someone's life. 04:26 I imagine most people who would have that thought ever 04:29 would just brush the thought away and say it4s just an 04:32 episode of crazy thinking and then move on and forget about 04:34 it. 04:35 But temptation comes - and unless you know what to do 04:39 when it does come, you might end up as its victim. 04:43 Stop and think for a moment about the things that tempt 04:45 you. 04:46 Some of them might be minor irritations - the temptation 04:49 to yell at your neighbors and tell them to turn their music 04:52 down. 04:53 And you might know that you're never actually going 04:55 to do that, but you're tempted ... "I would love to 04:58 do that". 04:59 But maybe you're tempted to sell drugs to get money to do 05:02 whatever. 05:03 See, if you're having a hard time financially that might 05:05 be a real temptation that eats away at you. 05:08 "Just do this simple thing and you'll have all the money 05:11 you need..." How does a person deal with that? 05:15 Thankfully, the Bible gives us the answers. 05:19 Today, we're going to look at the example of Someone who 05:21 knew what it was to be tempted. 05:23 That Someone is Jesus. 05:25 Jesus was fiercely tempted - and yet He never sinned, not 05:29 even once - not even by a thought. 05:33 How was He able to resist temptation? 05:36 I want to make something crystal clear right from the 05:38 get-go today. 05:39 The Bible says that you CAN resist temptation. 05:44 You don't HAVE to fall. 05:46 That's not to say you're suddenly going to learn how 05:48 to always get it right and never make a mistake. 05:50 Remember, that as Christians we GROW. 05:54 But what are we growing into? 05:56 The idea is to grow to become more and more like Jesus. 06:01 So we want to be resisting temptation more and more and 06:04 falling into it less and less. 06:07 In 1 Corinthians 10:13 the Bible says this, No 06:12 temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to 06:16 man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be 06:20 tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation 06:24 will also make the way of escape, that you may be able 06:29 to bear it. 06:30 1 Corinthians 10:13, NKJV That means there is a way 06:32 out, and that way out is through faith in God. 06:35 Through Jesus. 06:38 Today's program could absolutely change your life. 06:42 We4re about to look at how Jesus handled temptation. 06:46 Don't go away. 06:47 I'll be right back. 06:51 In Matthew 4:4, the word of God says, It is written, man 06:54 shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that 06:58 proceeds from the mouth of God. 07:00 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 07:04 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 07:09 especially for busy people like you. 07:11 Look for Every Word on selected networks or watch it 07:12 on line every day on our website: itiswritten.com. 07:16 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 07:19 Watch Every Word. 07:20 You4ll be glad you did. 07:22 Here4s a sample: 07:32 Thanks for joining me. 07:33 I wonder if there's a better verse to describe a certain 07:35 problem that afflicts the human family. 07:37 Proverbs 21:2 says that, "Every way of a man is right 07:41 in his own eyes." 07:41 This affects all of us: people 07:44 have a tremendous capacity to convince themselves that 07:47 their way is right. 07:49 Which is fine, if it IS right. 07:51 In the Garden of Eden Satan tempted Adam and Eve to do 07:53 what THEY thought was right, even if God's will was 07:56 different. 07:57 Facing Satan in the wilderness, Jesus quoted 07:59 Deuteronomy and said that people ought to live "by 08:02 every word that proceeds from the mouth of GOD." 08:03 Tis good to have opinions and ideas. 08:06 But remember today we can get in a fix doing that which is 08:10 right in our eyes. 08:11 What we want, is to know, and do, that which is right in 08:15 GOD'S eyes. 08:17 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 08:19 Let's live today by Every Word. 08:26 Planning for your financial future is vital aspect of 08:29 Christian stewardship. 08:31 For this reason, It Is Written is pleased to offer 08:33 free Planned Giving and Estate Services. 08:36 For information on how we can help you, please call 08:39 1.800.992.2219. 08:42 Call today or visit our special website 08:45 www.hislegacy.com. 08:54 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 08:57 I4m John Bradshaw and today we're looking at temptation, 09:00 specifically, how Jesus handled temptation. 09:04 Before the end of the program, I am going to offer 09:06 you a free resource that could be a powerful tool to 09:08 help you in your faith journey, something that will 09:11 help you deal successfully with temptation. 09:14 When Jesus was 30 years old He started His public 09:17 ministry. 09:18 And He was anointed for His ministry by the Holy Spirit 09:20 when He was baptized at the River Jordan by John the 09:22 Baptist. 09:24 At His baptism, something unusual happened. 09:27 A voice from heaven rang out - the voice of God. 09:30 He said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well 09:34 pleased. 09:35 You read that in Matthew 3:17. 09:37 KJV Now, that's significant for many reasons, not the 09:39 least of which is because of what happened next. 09:42 That was at the end of Matthew 3. 09:44 Matthew 4 opens with Jesus being "tempted" by the devil. 09:50 Jesus fasts for almost six weeks. 09:53 You know He's extremely hungry by then - craving 09:55 food, and He's weak, and Satan comes to Him and says, 09:59 this in Matthew 4, "If you are the Son of God, command 10:06 that these stones become bread." Now was that a 10:11 temptation for Jesus? 10:12 Of course it was! 10:14 He hadn't eaten in 40 days. 10:16 He was starving! 10:17 But more than that, Satan said to Him, "IF" you're 10:21 really the Son of God." In other words, Satan said 10:24 "Prove who you really are. 10:26 It isn't just that you're hungry, but I'm calling into 10:28 question who you really are. 10:31 You're not really the Messiah, are you? 10:33 You're not going to believe what your Father said, are 10:35 you?" Satan was tempting Jesus to doubt God. 10:40 In fact, it's a lot like what Satan said to Eve. 10:43 God had said, Eat the fruit and you shall surely die. 10:46 But Satan said, "Has God said you shall surely die?" "God 10:52 didn't really mean that, did He Eve?" "You're not really 10:54 going to believe the word of God, are you?" And he takes 10:57 the same approach with Jesus. 10:59 "If you're really the Son of God..." No doubt, Jesus was 11:04 tempted. 11:05 So notice what He did. 11:07 Jesus quoted the word of God. 11:10 In Matthew 4:4, Jesus says this "It Is Written (and 11:15 you've got to like those verses that start It Is 11:17 Written) Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every 11:22 word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Jesus fled to 11:28 God's word. 11:29 He quoted it and believed it. 11:32 God's word was the strength in Christ's moment of 11:36 temptation. 11:37 God's word was Jesus' weapon against temptation. 11:41 Remember, Jesus was tempted throughout His entire 11:44 ministry. 11:45 He had people following Him around, goading Him to sin, 11:47 almost every moment of every day, harassing Him, bothering 11:50 Him and Jesus found His strength in God's word. 11:53 When temptation comes to you, you'll be okay if you do what 11:58 Jesus did and run to the word of God. 12:01 That's where the strength is. 12:04 Let me give you some examples of what I'm talking about. 12:07 When temptation comes, you can quote the verse I 12:09 mentioned before 1 Corinthians 10:13. 12:12 Remember, it says this, 1 Corinthians 10:13, But God is 12:16 faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what 12:19 you are able, but with the temptation will also make the 12:22 way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 12:26 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV That's God promising you that 12:29 He's going to give you a way out of temptation. 12:31 Whatever that temptation is so what temptation comes 12:35 you can pray and remind God this first, and tell Him you are 12:39 counting on Him to get you away out of temptation. 12:42 would you do it? 12:46 His Word that he would. 12:46 I'd like to give you an example. 12:49 A young man told me he was walking along a narrow street 12:51 one day, when he looked up and saw a woman a little 12:53 further up the street standing in the middle of the 12:55 street who was - as he said - she was dressed to distract. 12:59 That's the way he put it. 13:01 And he said that knowing himself, he was going to have 13:04 a difficult time keeping his mind where it ought to be. 13:07 So here is what he did. 13:08 He prayed and asked God to keep His promise and make a 13:12 way of escape. 13:13 He said he didn't know how God could possibly do that 13:15 because there she was and she didn't seem to be going 13:18 anywhere. 13:19 But when he looked up from having said his prayer as he 13:21 walked... 13:23 the woman was actually walking away and disappeared 13:25 around a corner! 13:27 God had kept His promise. 13:30 Here's another verse that you will want to remember in your 13:32 battle with temptation. 13:34 It's Jude 24. 13:36 You'll find it right before the Book of Revelation. 13:40 The Bible says, Now unto him that is able to keep you from 13:45 falling, and to present you faultless before the presence 13:48 of his glory with exceeding joy. 13:52 Jude 1:24, KJV Did you catch that? 13:54 God is able to keep you from falling. 13:57 And when you find yourself in the midst of temptation, if 14:00 you'll bring that promise to Jesus you can be certain He 14:04 will keep it, and that He will keep you from falling. 14:07 You know what a big part of the problem is? 14:10 It isn't just that temptation comes. 14:12 That's simply the price we pay for living in a sinful 14:14 world. 14:15 It's that we don't have the word of God in our minds when 14:18 temptation comes. 14:20 We can get distracted to the point that we're not getting 14:23 God's word into our mind. 14:26 And we can be blinded to the danger of sin by this world 14:29 that celebrates sin and has normalized in. 14:33 Remember - the wages of sin is death. 14:36 Sin separates a person from God (Isaiah 59:9) We ought to 14:40 run from temptation as though our life depends on it, 14:43 because - spiritually speaking - it does. 14:47 I'll be back with more about how you can resist temptation 14:49 in just a moment. 14:59 Eyes for India is giving sight to the blind and you 15:03 can be a part of this amazing work that God is doing. 15:06 Fifteen million blind people live in India, more than any 15:09 other country in the world. 15:11 And many of the blind in India could see again, if 15:14 only they could have simple cataract surgery. 15:17 It Is Written is making that happen. 15:20 Would you support Eyes for India? 16:28 It's everywhere. 16:30 Now, keep this in mind. 16:31 All Satan can do is tempt you to sin. 16:34 He cannot force you to sin. 16:36 He tempts, you choose. 16:38 There is always a choice available to us to make, and 16:42 that choice is to go with God or go it alone. 16:44 To say Yes to Jesus, or to say Yes to self. 16:47 When it comes to fending off temptation, the best thing we 16:50 can do is imitate what Jesus did when He was tempted in 16:54 the wilderness. 16:54 Satan tempted Him to turn stones into bread, and to 16:57 doubt His Father. 16:59 Remember, the Father had told Jesus that He was God's Son. 17:02 Satan says this, he said "If you're the Son of God, do 17:06 this." And Jesus met him with that great Bible verse when 17:11 He said, It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread 17:15 alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of 17:19 God. 17:20 Matthew 4:4 I'm going to believe my Father. 17:24 Even if it doesn't look like I'm the Son of God out here 17:26 in the wilderness, I'll believe God's word before I 17:30 believe even appearances." So Satan tried twice more. 17:34 "Jump off this high place, because the angels will catch 17:37 you and you'll be okay!" And Jesus said, It is written 17:41 again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God." Matthew 17:45 4:7, NKJV "Bow down and worship me, and I'll give you 17:49 all the kingdoms of the world," and Jesus said in 17:51 Matthew 4:10, You shall worship the LORD your God, 17:54 and Him only you shall serve. 17:55 Matthew 4:10 NKJV The devil was defeated. 18:03 Temptation has no power over the word of God. 18:05 The promises of God are enough to see off the foe - 18:08 Satan is no match for the weakest sinner armed with 18:12 simple faith in the promises of God's word. 18:15 Now, before I look at more promises with you, let me 18:17 make a couple of practical suggestions. 18:20 If you want to resist temptation, you can start by 18:22 not putting yourself in its way. 18:25 If lust is a problem, don't go down to the beach on a hot 18:28 summer's day. 18:29 If alcohol is a problem, don't meet a friend at the 18:32 bar. 18:33 If you get frazzled rushing off to work each morning, 18:35 give yourself more time in the morning by getting up a 18:38 little earlier. 18:39 If you're tempted to eat junk food, stop at a store that 18:42 sells healthy good. 18:43 Get more sleep. 18:45 Get more exercise. 18:47 These two things will help you feel better and help your 18:49 brain to function better. 18:51 Now I'm not saying these are the big keys, they're not - 18:54 but they'll help. 18:56 The big key is claiming the promises of God. 18:59 In fact, you could broaden that a little to emphasize 19:02 how important it is that we keep in touch with God. 19:06 When I became a Christian, I knew my life had really 19:08 changed when one day I hit my thumb with a hammer, and 19:13 instead of saying something I would regret I said a prayer. 19:15 Now, now I don't mean I whacked my thumb and then 19:18 bowed my head and said, Father in heaven... 19:20 I don't mean that. 19:21 I mean, when I hit my thumb, my first instinct was to talk 19:23 to God. 19:25 And when I reflected on that I thought, Wow, God is really 19:28 working. 19:29 Why was he working? 19:30 Because I was in touch with him and being in touch with 19:33 Him kept me from sin. 19:35 He gave me strength in the face of temptation. 19:38 If you let your devotional life slip, if you're not 19:40 reading the Bible, if you're not connecting with God in 19:43 prayer, you'll have little power to resist temptation. 19:47 Little or none. 19:50 The power comes from abiding in Christ, by having the 19:53 power of the Holy Spirit in your life. 19:56 Jesus said to His disciples one day, "Watch and pray that 20:00 you enter not into temptation." It will come to 20:03 you, but you don't have to enter into it. 20:06 If you watch and pray. 20:08 We're told in the Lord's prayer to pray this way: 20:10 "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." 20:15 This thing is a part of our daily existence. 20:17 Billy Sunday once said, "Temptation is the devil 20:20 looking through the keyhole. 20:22 Yielding is opening the door and inviting him in." The 20:27 devil can tempt. 20:28 He will. 20:29 He knows your weak points, and he'll do everything he 20:32 can to exploit them. 20:34 He'll try to make you late and harried in the morning. 20:37 He'll jab the neighbor's dog to bark at 4.30 in the 20:41 morning so you'll wake up cranky. 20:43 He'll encourage you to think that when your spouse said, 20:45 Hi, honey, how was your day?, that what he or she was 20:47 really thinking was, "I really don't like you very 20:49 much anymore." He'll play mind games with you. 20:52 But if you'll learn to run to God - and lean on His word - 20:56 you'll be okay. 20:58 If you're tempted to say things you shouldn't, take 21:01 this Bible verse to God. 21:02 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my 21:06 lips. 21:07 Psalms 141:3 You're asking God to take over when you 21:11 take that verse to Him - you're surrendering to God. 21:14 And remember what James wrote, Submit yourselves 21:17 therefore to God. 21:20 Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 21:24 James 4:7, KJV You submit, you resist through the Word, 21:29 and the devil flees. 21:32 It works. 21:33 Hebrews 2:18 says, For in that he himself hath suffered 21:37 being tempted, he is able to aid those that are tempted. 21:41 Hebrews 2:18, KJV See that? 21:43 Jesus knows what it is like to be tempted, and so He's 21:46 able to help you when you're tempted. 21:49 "Lord, I'm tempted to think you've abandoned me!" I will 21:53 never leave you nor forsake you. 21:55 Hebrews 13:5 NKJV "Lord, I'm so weak!" My strength is made 21:59 perfect in weakness. 22:01 2 Corinthians 12:9 It is God who works in you both to will 22:06 and to do for His good pleasure. 22:09 Philippians 2:13, NKJV The promises of God were Jesus' 22:12 way out of temptation, and they'll deliver you too. 22:15 And one thought I want to make sure I share with you 22:18 today - If you have fallen into temptation, remember 22:21 another one of God's promises. 22:23 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just 22:31 to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all 22:35 unrighteousness.1 John 1:9 As much as you don't want to 22:38 fall into temptation, should you do so you can afford to 22:42 remember that God is a forgiving God. 22:54 [Music] What would you do if you found $45,000 that wasn't 22:58 yours - would you be tempted to keep it? 23:02 What if nobody knew, and if 23:11 nobody could possibly know you'd found the money - what 23:16 if there would be no questions asked? 23:21 When a Utah man named Josh Ferrin bought his first house 23:25 he started looking around in the attic, where he found a 23:27 number of metal boxes [music] 23:41 that turned out to be stuffed full with about $45,000. 23:49 [Music.] Here's what he said in the news story. 23:57 "I'm not perfect, and I wish I could say there was never 24:02 any doubt in my mind. 24:05 We knew we had to give it back, but it doesn't mean I 24:08 didn't think about our car in need of repairs, how we would 24:11 love to adopt a child and aren't' able to do that right 24:14 now, or fix up our outdated house that we just bought." 24:20 He was tempted. 24:22 Strongly. 24:24 But he said, "But the money wasn't ours... 24:27 and this is a lesson I hope to teach my children."
