Seven hundred fifty million 00:45 people watched as Diana Spencer stepped out of the royal 00:49 glass coach in front of Saint Paul's Cathedral in London 00:52 on July 29, 1981. The fairy tale wedding of Prince 00:57 Charles and Lady Diana was the most watched event 01:01 in television history. In addition to the TV audience, 01:04 2 million citizens lined the streets, hoping to get a glimpse 01:08 of the royal couple. It was the wedding 01:11 of the century. In the United Kingdom, the day 01:14 of the wedding was declared a national holiday. 01:16 Four thousand police, 2,100 military officers, 01:21 dressed in their decorated uniforms 01:23 adding to the grandeur. But according to one of the 02:15 parables of Jesus, this is exactly what happened. 02:19 It's recorded in Matthew chapter 22. 02:22 "The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a 02:25 marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those 02:29 who were invited to the wedding. And they were not willing 02:32 to come. Again, he sent out other 02:35 servants saying, tell those people who are invited: 02:39 See, I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fatted cattle 02:42 are killed. And all things are ready. 02:45 Come to the wedding. But they made light of it 02:49 and went their ways, one to his own farm, 02:52 another to his business, and the rest 02:54 seized his servants, treated them spitefully 02:58 and killed them. But when the king heard about it 03:01 he was furious, and he sent out his armies, 03:04 destroyed those murderers and burned up their city. 03:07 Then he said to his servants, the wedding is ready. 03:10 But those who were invited were not worthy. 03:13 Therefore, go into the highways and as many as you find, 03:16 invite to the wedding. So those servants went out into 03:20 the highways and gathered together all whom they found, 03:22 both bad and good. And the wedding hall was 03:25 filled with guests. But when the king came in to see 03:29 the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on 03:32 a wedding garment. So he said to him, 03:35 friend, how do you come in here without a wedding garment? 03:38 And he was speechless. Then the king said 03:41 to his servants, bind him hand and foot, 03:43 take him away, and cast him 03:45 into outer darkness. There will be weeping and 03:48 gnashing of teeth. For many are called, 03:51 but few are chosen." 03:54 That's an amazing story, packed with insights 03:57 relevant for us today. In it, Jesus covers 04:00 the entire salvation history. The fate of Israel is revealed. 04:04 He warns about a coming judgment and tells us how to be saved. 04:08 Now, time won't let us unpack all of the real details, 04:11 but what's obvious is that the king represents God. 04:14 Jesus is the son, and the wedding feast 04:17 represents the kingdom of God. The theme of the parable 04:21 is salvation. Jesus started out by saying, 04:25 "The kingdom of heaven is like..." 04:27 Now, to the people of that day it meant, 04:29 this is the way to be saved. The son of the king was getting 04:32 married, and the king requested the presence of his guests 04:36 to share in the festivity. To accept the invitation 04:39 of the king and to attend the feast--that was to be saved. 04:43 Now, invitees had an option. Either they could attend, which 04:46 meant receiving eternal life. Or they could decline, 04:50 and be eternally lost. The same truth is repeated by 04:53 Jesus in the parable of the five wise and five foolish virgins; 04:57 because the five wise virgins brought extra oil with them, 04:59 they were able to accompany the bridal couple 05:01 into the wedding feast. When the five foolish ones 05:04 arrived a little later, they found the door locked. 05:09 The bridegroom responded to their knocking by saying, 05:11 "I don't know you." All those who didn't attend 05:16 lost their lives. The ones who ignored the 05:19 invitation were killed by the soldiers of the king. 05:22 The one who failed to wear the wedding robe 05:24 was cast into outer darkness. To attend is to be saved. 05:29 To decline is to be lost. The first part of the parable 05:34 deals with Israel's failure to fulfill its destiny. 05:39 God's intention was to restore life as it was before Adam 05:42 and Eve sinned, through the descendants of Abraham. 05:46 Now, if Israel had accepted God's will for them and ordered 05:49 their lives after God's plans, life to them would have been 05:53 a banquet feast. Poverty would have been 05:55 eliminated. Disease would have been 05:58 eradicated. By following the agricultural 06:01 principles God gave them, their land would have been 06:04 transformed to Garden of Eden beauty. 06:07 They would have been the wisest and richest nation 06:10 in all the earth. And to crown it all, 06:13 the Messiah, the divine King, would personally 06:16 have reigned over them and His capital would 06:18 have been Jerusalem. All the nations would have 06:21 attached themselves to the Messiah's kingdom. 06:24 The rebellious would have been annihilated. 06:26 Peace and joy would have filled the earth and death would have 06:28 been banished. Now, you'll notice the king 06:31 instructs his servants to call those who've been invited. 06:34 God's first call went to His own people. 06:38 They knew all about the promises of God--especially the promise 06:42 of the Messianic King. The reign of the Messiah was the 06:46 focal point of their existence. In their darkest hours, 06:50 they hoped in the coming of the Messiah, believing that He would 06:53 come no matter how harsh circumstances might be. 06:56 God had promised. This divine King would bring 07:00 deliverance and would lead Israel to conquer the world. 07:04 The king's messengers in the parable represent the prophets. 07:09 Their message of invitation rings throughout 07:11 the Old Testament. Turn from your apostasy, 07:14 turn from your idolatry, from your disobedience. 07:16 Turn from your stubbornness. Come to the feast of 07:19 the Lord your God. Come, and enter life 07:22 in its fullness. Come to the banquet feast 07:24 of the Messiah's kingdom. But we know that they would not. 07:28 Sad. See, God is serious 07:31 about salvation. He knows more than anyone 07:33 the horrors of the alternative. In His infinite love 07:37 God cries out, "I have no pleasure 07:40 in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked 07:42 turn from his ways and live." That's Ezekiel 33:11. 07:46 God will do whatever it takes to save a lost person. 07:50 Jesus' death on the cross proved that. 07:53 God loves every son and daughter of Adam more than His own life. 07:57 He wants everyone to be in His eternal kingdom. 08:00 So when His people didn't respond to the first invitation, 08:03 he again sent out messengers, with a second invitation. 08:07 I've done all the preparation, the food is getting cold. 08:09 Come on! And they say that in the New 10:15 Testament, He somehow changed into a God of love and mercy, 10:19 His grace delivering us from the curse of the Law. 10:22 But you know, this idea can't possibly be true. 10:26 You see, God is changeless. If He changes, He can't be God. 10:30 There's as much grace in the Old Testament as there is in 10:33 the New Testament. The Bible tells us Noah found 10:37 grace in the sight of God. You read about Lot, being 10:40 mentioned in connection with God's grace. 10:43 God didn't suddenly become gracious or invent grace when 10:47 New Testament times arrived. And in this parable is a display 10:51 of the grace of God, as He sends out invitation after invitation. 10:58 But the day came when the king dispatched not messengers 11:01 with another invitation but soldiers, 11:05 with orders to exterminate. The results were tragic. 11:09 The murderers were executed and their city went up in smoke. 11:13 Now, really, this is exactly what happened to Israel. 11:15 Jesus came with a last invitation. 11:18 Passionately He preached: Repent. 11:20 The Kingdom is at hand. But to no avail. 11:23 He predicted that the Roman army would come and their city would 11:26 be destroyed. Less than 40 years later, Titus, 11:29 the commander of the Roman army, watched as the smoke of 11:33 Jerusalem bellowed up to heaven. It's popular to preach about 11:37 God's unconditional love, but we should never confuse 11:41 unconditional love with never-ending mercy. 11:45 Unconditional love means we don't have to meet any 11:48 conditions for God to love us. He accepts us just as we are. 11:52 No sin is so heinous that God won't still love you. 11:56 No prodigal son or daughter can be so defiled that he or she 12:00 will not receive a warm embrace by the Father when 12:04 they come home. But the Bible is equally clear 12:08 that God's mercy can be exhausted. 12:11 In Noah's day He announced that the end of all flesh had come. 12:14 God's options had run out. To extend more mercy back 12:19 then would have been just foolishness. 12:21 No matter what else God would have done, it wouldn't have 12:24 changed the hardened hearts of Noah's contemporaries. 12:27 When mankind reached that place, God's mercy ceases 12:31 because it's useless. God is a God of love, 12:35 no question. But He doesn't flinch from 12:38 making hard decisions. After waiting 120 years, the day 12:42 came when He shut the door of the ark, called for the flood, 12:47 and a world population was swept to its doom. 12:52 And this also happened to the Jewish nation. 12:55 God prepared a banquet. "What could have been done more 13:08 to my vineyard that I have not done in it?" 13:11 That's a question God asks. This was no ordinary banquet 13:15 Jesus spoke of in that parable. It was a banquet 13:18 of the King of heaven. Invitation after invitation 13:21 was sent, not to come and dig ditches 13:24 or break rocks but to enjoy a kingly banquet. 13:28 What excuse can you offer for turning down such 13:31 a gracious invitation? What better or more exciting 13:34 invitation could God have given? But they made light of it. 13:39 A direct translation would be: They were careless. 13:43 They didn't care. More invitations wouldn't have 13:45 convinced them. Now, 13:47 notice this important point: God didn't reject those people. 13:51 Israel rejected God. And He was simply obliged 13:56 to respect their decision. Listen to the parable, 13:59 it's crucial. Matthew 22, verses 8 and 9. 14:03 "Then he said to his servants. The wedding is ready, 14:07 but those who were invited were not worthy. 14:10 Therefore, go into the highways and as many as you find, 14:14 invite to the wedding." The king dispatched his army, 14:18 they killed the murderers and burned up their city. 14:21 Because they rejected the invitation, they were counted 14:24 not worthy. Then He sent out His servants 14:26 again. Now here's a very important 18:59 truth Jesus doesn't want us to miss. 19:02 Yet many Christians, even, are missing it entirely. 19:06 Not everyone who accepts the gospel invitation will be saved. 19:09 Now think this through with me. Jesus knew this would be the 19:12 attitude of many people, even in our day. 19:15 That's why He included the wedding garment in the parable. 19:19 Millions of people stake their hope on what it says in 19:21 Romans chapter 10. For with the heart one believes 19:39 unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made 19:43 unto salvation." The Scripture says, 19:47 "Whoever believes on him will not be put to shame." 19:51 Now that person's going to read this and go to bed 19:53 in peace, thinking that they will be saved because 19:55 they responded to an altar call, or they've confessed 19:58 Jesus as Lord. But that would be reading into 20:01 the passage what the passage doesn't say. 20:04 Now, according to the parable, you first must clear 20:08 the judgment before you can enter the Kingdom. 20:12 Now, some will say this is ludicrous. 20:14 It contradicts the gospel.
