01:50 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today.
01:51 This is It Is Written.
01:52 I'm John Bradshaw.
01:54 When you open up the Bible,
01:56 particularly the early chapters of the Bible,
01:58 you discover that, way back then,
02:00 some individuals lived a very long time.
02:04 Methuselah, we know, lived to be 969.
02:07 Yet in today's society, when somebody gets to 80, 85, 90,
02:12 we get excited and think they've lived a long time.
02:15 A hundred, more common today than it was a generation ago,
02:19 is an outstanding achievement.
02:20 But compare that to the Bible,
02:22 and it's, not really so long at all.
02:24 Today we're going to talk about anti-aging secrets.
02:27 How you can live longer, healthier, happier,
02:31 and holier from a biblical perspective.
02:34 My guest today is Dr. John Westerdahl.
02:36 He is a nutritionist from the Bragg Health Institute
02:39 in Santa Barbara, California.
02:41 Dr. Westerdahl, thanks for joining me.
02:43 Welcome to It Is Written.
02:44 >>Dr. John Westerdahl: Thank you, John.
02:45 It's good to be with you today.
02:46 >>John: Now, I'm fascinated to know that you are a
02:48 board-certified anti-aging health practitioner.
02:50 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
02:51 >>John: What's that?
02:52 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's a organization called the American
02:54 Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
02:56 And there's thousands of doctors
02:58 who are members of this organization,
03:00 and their specialty is into learning how we can
03:04 promote anti-aging, live longer and healthier lives.
03:08 And, uh, so what they have is they have certifications
03:10 for both medical doctors, board certifications,
03:13 as well as healthcare practitioners.
03:15 I'm a nutritionist, so I've taken the exams
03:18 and become board certified in that area as well.
03:20 Because that's a big interest of mine.
03:21 >>John: Anti-aging.
03:22 You can't stop a person getting old.
03:23 The only way to not get old is to die.
03:25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah.
03:26 >>John: The longer you live,
03:27 the further back in time your birthday gets.
03:29 But I'm expecting that this idea of anti-aging is,
03:32 is warding off the ravages of Father Time.
03:34 Is that right?
03:35 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is.
03:36 And, uh, it's not that we're against aging.
03:38 >>John: Oh, no.
03:39 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're going to age.
03:40 We're going to get a year older every year.
03:41 But there's things that we can do to slow
03:42 the aging process down and, in some cases,
03:46 even reverse some of that process,
03:48 by a healthy lifestyle and some of the new technologies
03:51 in the anti-aging field.
03:52 >>John: I've heard of this thing,
03:53 you look at your birth certificate;
03:54 it says you're 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.
03:56 But then you can do these little tests and it will tell you your,
03:59 your health age,
04:01 and you might be older than your birth certificate says,
04:03 or doing better.
04:05 Your body's younger than that piece of paper might suggest.
04:08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
04:09 That's the different between chronological age
04:11 versus biological age.
04:13 Chronologically, we get a year, every year we get older.
04:17 But if you are living a healthy lifestyle,
04:19 you're taking good care of your health,
04:20 you don't have the health problems and so forth
04:22 that a lot of average Americans do, you, uh,
04:25 can be potentially younger than your chronological age,
04:29 just by the way you live.
04:30 >>John: Now, if you look at the average age for an individual
04:33 in a Western society, it's not that bad.
04:35 And the average lifespan that is,
04:38 is a whole lot longer than it was,
04:40 say, a generation or a hundred years ago.
04:44 Now, much of that is due to improvements in healthcare;
04:48 uh, infant mortality rates are down.
04:51 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
04:52 >>John: So those figures don't really give a very accurate
04:56 picture of how much better we're doing today
04:59 than we were some years ago.
05:00 Perhaps the numbers overstate the fact.
05:03 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
05:04 >>John: So, where are we today with healthcare?
05:05 How well are we doing as a society?
05:07 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're doing very poorly,
05:08 and I think a lot of people see that today.
05:10 Uh, the problem is that, from healthcare standpoint,
05:14 is there's so much emphasis put on cheaper health insurance,
05:18 or cheaper drugs, uh, less expensive,
05:21 uh, treatments that we can have, and so forth.
05:23 Some of those, uh, technologies are miraculous.
05:26 It's amazing what we are doing today
05:29 in the science of medicine.
05:30 However, we're not getting to the root cause
05:33 of the healthcare crisis problem,
05:34 and that has to do with the way we are living, our lifestyle.
05:39 Because for 90 percent of the cases,
05:42 it's our lifestyle that's causing the health problems that
05:45 we have today.
05:46 >>John: A few changes in the way we're living
05:47 our lives would affect our outcomes dramatically.
05:50 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
05:50 And that's why,
05:51 in addition to the field of anti-aging medicine,
05:54 this whole area of lifestyle medicine
05:56 is also emerging for doctors who see,
05:59 they're beginning to see the light that we can't spend
06:01 all this money in healthcare that we are today,
06:03 and all these exotic treatments in medicines and technologies,
06:07 that we need to do things that can be less expensive,
06:11 and that's like simple things: eating healthier,
06:15 getting regular exercise, learning to control your stress.
06:18 Lifestyle things.
06:19 >>John: So tell me, then, I go to the doctor,
06:20 I'm a diabetic, I have, um, some kind of, uh, cardiac issue.
06:25 I might have rheumatoid arthritis.
06:27 One thing I could do is say,
06:29 write me some prescriptions, Doctor.
06:30 And the doctors in many, or most,
06:32 cases will do just that.
06:33 But a lifestyle medicine physician might do what?
06:37 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lifestyle medicine doctor would sit down
06:39 with you and take a look at your diet,
06:41 and say, well, what kind of foods do you eat?
06:43 Of course, they would do some tests,
06:45 blood tests, and do the weight, height and weight,
06:47 all those tests, to get an assessment.
06:49 But they will look at your diet, they'll look at your exercise
06:52 and activity habits,
06:53 all the things related to your lifestyle,
06:55 really, and see where those may be the causes
06:58 of the health condition you may have.
07:00 And, as I said, in the majority of health problems today
07:04 are diet and lifestyle related.
07:07 In fact, 70 percent of the patients that we have
07:09 in our hospitals today are there as a result of diet
07:12 and lifestyle-related causes.
07:13 >>John: The old saying is, "you are what you eat."
07:16 So what are some good foods that can,
07:19 uh, help, uh, perhaps, uh, ward off sickness,
07:24 or reverse diseases, or, or are anti-aging?
07:28 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's one message that I want to get
07:30 clear to you, and to our listeners today,
07:33 is that foods from plants prevent the diseases
07:36 that are killing us.
07:38 Foods from plants promote health,
07:42 longevity, and beauty.
07:43 >>John: So, what are some foods?
07:45 List some quickly, and say, well,
07:47 these ones are really good for you.
07:48 >>Dr. Westerdahl: The, uh, research is showing now,
07:50 eating more fruits and vegetables,
07:52 particularly colorful fruits and vegetables,
07:54 can significantly reduce your risk of having stroke and,
07:58 and, uh, heart disease, and cancer.
08:01 There are wonderful compounds that we find in these fruits
08:05 and vegetables that God has put into nature for us to eat,
08:08 besides just the nutrients, the vitamins and minerals,
08:11 but the, we call them phytochemicals,
08:14 which are, include antioxidants.
08:16 Uh, these are compounds that actually prevent or slow
08:20 the process of aging.
08:21 They prevent our cells from rusting, you could say.
08:24 And, uh, they actually block some of the carcinogens
08:29 doing their damage to these cells as well.
08:31 >>John: I'm excited about that.
08:32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
08:33 >>John: What are the good antioxidant foods?
08:35 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Colorful fruits and vegetables
08:36 are the best ones.
08:38 >>John: Carrots.
08:38 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Carrots.
08:39 Those have bright yellow colors.
08:41 That's beta-carotene, the carotinoids.
08:43 Your green has carotinoids, including lutein.
08:47 Your purple colors have these proanthocyanins,
08:50 they call them.
08:51 >>John: I've heard that blueberries
08:52 are good antioxidants.
08:53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Blueberries are an excellent antioxidant.
08:55 And that's why I recommend eating a rainbow of colors,
08:58 because you're going to get a variety of these wonderful
09:01 compounds that you find in foods,
09:02 when you do that.
09:03 >>John: Today, anti-aging foods from the Bible.
09:06 Before we're done, we'll even share with you a recipe,
09:10 and we'll show you some food, and maybe even sample some food,
09:13 that has definite anti-aging qualities and properties.

10:35 a nutritionist and a board-certified

10:40 Today, how you can live longer,
10:42 how you can even turn back the clock.
10:44 That's true, isn't it, turning back the clock?

11:01 Are you supposed to start this
11:02 when you're 70, 80, 85 years old?
11:04 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's interesting you talk about that,
11:05 because, um, my daughter, when she was six years old,
11:08 I'd tell people,
11:09 “She's on an anti-aging diet.”
11:10 >>John: And I bet they said, well, looking at her,
11:12 it seems to be working.
11:13 >>Dr. Westerdahl: [chuckles] Well, I have to tell you that
11:15 this is an important thing,
11:16 because it's really sad to see
11:18 what's happening with our youth today.
11:19 Actually, we need to get people on anti-aging lifestyles
11:24 when they're young.
11:26 That's when we should start.
11:27 Uh, you know, today we have seven-year-old children
11:30 with adult-onset diabetes.
11:31 We have young kids who have adult, uh, diseases.
11:36 I was talking to a nurse the other day.
11:37 Her 13-year-old son,
11:39 said she didn't know what to do because her son,
11:42 the doctor said his arteries are all clogged up.
11:45 >>John: How old?
11:46 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Only 13 years of age.
11:47 And I was in the room when the surgeon general said that,
11:52 based on the way things are going today with obesity and the
11:55 health problems that we're facing with our children today,
11:58 that it is in this generation,
12:00 that parents will outlive their own children.
12:03 >>John: Yeah, that's shocking.
12:04 I've heard in the last few years some talk about blue zones.
12:08 These are places around the world,
12:10 various communities or locations,
12:12 where people seem to live much longer
12:15 than populations outside these zones.
12:18 Can you tell me about those?
12:19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that's actually a term
12:20 that was developed by Dan Buettner,
12:22 who is with National Geographic Magazine,
12:24 where a few years ago they had a special
12:27 on the secrets of living longer.
12:29 And they identified these blue zones.
12:32 These blue zones are areas in the world where people
12:35 or populations have exceptional health and longevity.
12:39 In that issue of National Geographic,
12:41 they identified three different cultures.
12:43 One is in Okinawa, Japan,
12:46 where there's a high level of centenarians in that area
12:50 who follow the traditional Okinawa lifestyle
12:53 and diet and so forth.
12:54 The second area was in Sardinia, Italy.
12:57 And the third, the blue zone of America,
13:00 was in Loma Linda, California,
13:03 which is the high population of Seventh-day Adventists.
13:05 >>John: And yet, they're living long lives in spite of the fact
13:08 that they're not living in a bucolic little paradise.
13:11 So let's talk about these places.
13:12 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
13:13 >>John: Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda:
13:15 what are the factors that contribute to this longevity?
13:17 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, when they look at those different
13:19 populations, they find some similar patterns.
13:22 First of all, a lot of them eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
13:25 They eat a, predominantly a plant-based diet.
13:28 So they're getting a lot of those antioxidants
13:29 and health properties we talked about earlier.
13:32 Uh, they have a, uh, culture where there's a lot of
13:35 socialization with each other.
13:37 They have, uh, their friends; in the Seventh-day Adventist
13:40 population they worship together;
13:43 the community has a similar philosophy of, of life.
13:46 In, um, Okinawa it's the same way.
13:49 These populations are also, uh,
13:51 tend to be more active than other parts,
13:53 their counterparts in their areas where they live.
13:56 And, um, so there's a number of factors that contribute
13:59 to their health and longevity.
14:01 >>John: Hmm. Now, you mentioned the Hunza people.
14:05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
14:06 >>John: It Is Written, when George Vandeman was the director
14:08 and the speaker of It Is Written some years ago,
14:10 It Is Written traveled to that part of the world
14:14 and met with the Hunza people, and explored some of the,
14:18 the health secrets of these people that live long.
14:21 What can you tell us about the, the Hunzas?
14:23 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, the Hunzas are up in the Himalayan
14:25 Mountains, very high, used to be northern Pakistan;
14:29 now it is part of Pakistan.
14:31 And, uh, they have a very unique lifestyle in that they live
14:34 a totally natural way of living.
14:37 They eat all organic food.
14:39 They eat predominantly a plant-based diet;
14:41 actually, only 13 days of the year do they eat some meat.
14:44 The rest of the time they follow a vegetarian diet.
14:47 Um, they're amongst the longest living people in the world.
14:51 Uh, reports of ages up to 120 to 130 years of age,
14:55 uh, that have been reported in the Journal
14:58 of the American Medical Association.
14:59 And I know when Pastor Vandeman went over there,
15:02 he had a picture of an individual that was 120 years
15:05 old and was really in good health.
15:07 They have a, uh, a lifestyle that is similar to these other
15:11 blue zones in that it contributes to a population
15:15 that has a lot of centenarians in their population.
15:18 >>John: Now, how do we define aging?
15:20 What are some of the different theories about aging?
15:23 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a lot of ways of defining it.
15:25 People think of wrinkles.
15:26 You're losing your hair.
15:28 The typical things we think of aging.
15:31 >>John: I guess I'm aging.
15:32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And, and we all are aging
15:33 to some degree, right?
15:35 >>John: Um-hmm. Anti-aging, building healthy cells,
15:38 and something that you can eat and enjoy.

16:14 had got a job in a certain place, because, as Dad saw it,
16:16 if my brother applied himself he'd get noticed
16:19 and he'd be able to rise up through the ranks.
16:22 The Bible presents a similar thought,
16:24 although it has an important difference involved.
16:27 In Genesis, chapter 41, verses 39 and 40,
16:30 Pharaoh gave Joseph great authority in Egypt because,
16:33 as Pharaoh said,
16:35 “There is no one as discerning and wise as you.”
16:38 And where did that wisdom and discernment come from?
16:41 From Joseph's connection with and commitment to God.
16:45 Faith in God elevates a person.
16:48 When you become what you can become through the grace of God,
16:51 doors open and opportunities present themselves.
16:53 God has great plans for a person's life.
16:55 The key to success lies in committing your life to God.
16:58 Let's live today by every word.
17:03 >>John: Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written.
17:06 Today, anti-aging secrets from the Word of God.
17:10 And when we stop to think about this,
17:11 we realize that, back near the beginning,
17:14 it was through eating that which she shouldn't have eaten
17:18 that Eve lost her life and plunged, along with Adam,
17:22 the world into sin and shortness of life.
17:25 We're told in the Bible that we should eat for strength.
17:28 Dr. John Westerdahl, what do we have here?
17:31 I said a moment ago that we were going to share something
17:33 that would be an anti-aging secret, so please explain.
17:36 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, we're going to make an anti-aging
17:38 smoothy for you today that's going to add years to your life
17:40 and life to your years.
17:42 >>John: All right.
17:43 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And it's going to be based on building
17:44 healthy cells, so you have a good cell wall,
17:47 and keep that moisture within the cell,
17:48 so that keeps us younger.
17:50 >>John: If I need more intracellular water,
17:51 shouldn't I just drink more water?
17:53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You know, that's kind of a, a fallacy.
17:55 Because if you're drinking all this water all day long,
17:57 what's going to be happening?
17:59 >>John: I'm going to be going to the bathroom all day long.
18:00 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You're going to be going, so,
18:02 you're losing that water.
18:03 You want to have water that's going to keep within the cells
18:06 and retained in there to keep them healthy.
18:08 So really, the best thing to get your water is to eat your water.
18:12 And that's another reason for eating a plant-based diet:
18:15 eating the raw fruits,
18:16 particularly raw fruits and vegetables,
18:18 have a water within their cells that's going to be much easier
18:21 to get within your cell.
18:23 >>John: Now, convince me that this isn't cranky.
18:25 I mean, I can imagine my friend in Tupelo, Mississippi,
18:28 or in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, or in Billings, Montana,
18:31 going, ugh, the guy wants to eat his water,
18:33 he wants to turn me into a rabbit.
18:35 Help me understand that this is good,
18:38 solid, healthy, level, mainstream stuff.
18:42 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah, this is, this is good science,
18:44 based on what we call the science of cellular water,
18:48 and is one of the concepts of aging: that we lose our water.
18:52 As we get older, there's no question,
18:55 our body water in the body cells,
18:57 the water within our cells are lost as we get older.
19:00 So we're trying to build healthy cells to keep that water within.
19:03 >>John: All right.
19:04 I'm a believer; I'm not a skeptic.
19:05 All right, what have we got here,
19:07 and what are we going to put into this machine?
19:08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay, so, in order to build healthy cells
19:09 and, we're going to start with putting some antioxidants in.
19:13 This is pomegranate juice.
19:15 >>John: All right.
19:16 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Pomegranate juice is loaded with
19:17 antioxidants that...
19:18 >>John: Pomegranate juice.
19:19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: ...that, uh, help protect cells from damage.
19:22 >>John: All right.
19:23 That's good and red.
19:24 You mentioned before the red,
19:24 the reds and purples are good stuff.
19:26 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
19:27 >>John: Okay.
19:29 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to put
19:29 a vegetable protein in here.
19:31 This is soy, soy milk.
19:32 >>John: All right.
19:34 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So that's going to provide you with
19:35 good-quality vegetable protein.
19:37 >>John: All right, and you get soy milk
19:38 at the supermarket, right?
19:39 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
19:40 And that's also part of the cell walls, good protein.
19:43 And then blueberries.
19:44 >>John: All right.
19:45 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Probably my favorite fruit.
19:46 Blueberries are loaded with those antioxidants
19:48 that protect cells from, um, being damaged.
19:51 >>John: I love blueberries.
19:52 Some of the best things you can get.
19:54 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So pour all the blueberries in there.
19:55 >>John: I enjoy growing blueberries.
19:56 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something
19:58 that a lot of people may not know about.
19:59 This is what's called soy lecithin.
20:02 Now, people don't realize that every cell wall in your body
20:07 is made of lecithin.
20:08 So by contributing this, kind of supplementing to this drink
20:12 some lecithin that will go into your body,
20:14 so you can absorb it to build those healthy,
20:16 healthy, uh, cells as well.
20:18 >>John: Where do I get this from?
20:19 Can I buy it at the supermarket, or...
20:21 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You can buy that at the health food store.
20:22 It's usually in a canister or in the bulk bin,
20:24 and it comes from soybean oil, actually made from soybean oil.
20:28 It's a type of fat, a healthy fat.
20:30 >>John: That's good for you.
20:31 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's good for you.
20:31 >>John: All right.
20:33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add ground flax seed.
20:35 And flax seeds today are known as like the new fish oil.
20:38 Those are a plant-based, Omega-3 fatty acid.
20:41 >>John: Now, why are Omega-3s good?
20:42 They do what?
20:44 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids
20:45 that we need in our diet every day for good health.
20:48 And it's the type of fat that helps build that cell wall.
20:52 >>John: Has cancer-fighting properties too.
20:53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Has cancer-fighting properties,
20:55 and there's heart-health properties as well.
20:57 >>John: By the way, if you can, if you can eat food
21:00 that's going to fight cancer, you might as well.
21:03 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
21:04 >>John: That's just good common sense.
21:06 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something
21:08 that's unique to probably some of our viewers today,
21:10 and that's goji berries.
21:12 These are one of the most nutrient-dense foods
21:16 on the face of the earth.
21:18 Goji berries grow in China and the Himalaya areas,
21:21 and they're very rich in antioxidants as well.
21:24 >>John: Okay.
21:25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So they're like the new superfood
21:26 that everyone's talking about.
21:27 >>John: Oh, yeah. Goji berries.
21:29 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So put those in.
21:30 You get those at the health food store.
21:31 >>John: Okay.
21:33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
21:34 And I think what we're going to do to sweeten this,
21:36 we don't want to add sugar.
21:37 And I'm going to add an herbal sweetener called Stevia.
21:41 This is an interesting sweetener.
21:42 It comes from a green leaf grown in Paraguay,
21:45 and, uh, it's hundreds of times sweeter than sugar,
21:48 but there's no calories.
21:50 So we're going to put just a little bit of that
21:52 in as a sweetener.
21:54 It's not an artificial sweetener;
21:55 it's a natural sweetener.
21:57 >>John: Okay.
21:58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And I think we'll blend this up
21:59 before we put the ice in.
22:00 >>John: Let me ask you a question.
22:01 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
22:02 >>John: If you can't find Stevia at a grocery store near you,
22:05 I don't know if they have that at Piggly-Wiggly or Vons,
22:08 or just where they have it.
22:09 What do I use in place of it?
22:10 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, Stevia's an optional ingredient,
22:12 if you want to make it sweeter.
22:13 >>John: All right, all right.
22:14 You don't have to.
22:15 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You don't have to add it.
22:16 So we've added it.
22:16 You bet.
22:17 Okay, and we're going to, uh,
22:20 are you going to turn it on now for me?
22:22 >>John: Well, why not? Here we go.
22:24 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And the Vitamix mixer/blender here.
22:26 [sound of blender]
22:27 And we'll blend that up.
22:31 And that's going to blend all the ingredients.
22:33 [blender running faster] Turn that off.
22:48 We'll add the crushed ice.
22:49 Now, crushed ice will just make it cooler.
22:51 So we'll add some uh, this in here.
22:56 [sound of ice dropping] That's good.
23:01 So you want to turn that on again, John?
23:02 >>John: Sure.
23:04 [sound of blender] >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
23:14 [sound of blender] >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
23:23 >>John: All right, what have we got?
23:24 What are the...
23:25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And we have the anti-aging
23:27 smoothy here for you.
23:28 See what you think.
23:29 [sound of liquid pouring] Here you go.
23:31 >>John: All right.
23:33 All right, I'll take your word, I'll take your word for it.
23:41 Do I have to stop, or can I keep drinking?
23:42 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Oh. Go ahead!
23:44 >>John: I feel younger all ready.
23:45 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Good.
23:46 You look younger.
23:49 >>John: You know, that's good.
23:51 And if it means I'm going to live longer and healthier
23:54 and more prosperously, I'm all for it.
23:57 But that's pretty simple.
23:58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It is. Very simple.
24:00 >>John: Foods that you can buy in most any supermarket.
24:02 If it's not at the supermarket, it's at the health food store.
24:04 And if you don't have a health food store in town near you,
24:06 drive to one, or move.
24:09 >>Dr. Westerdahl: [chuckles] >>John: That's not bad.
24:11 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Good.
24:12 >>John: And the idea of this is, this is going to promote
24:14 healthier cells that will retain intracellular water.
24:18 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
24:18 >>John: And you'll do better.
24:19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
24:20 >>John: That's not bad!
24:22 Now, let me ask you another question.
24:23 Can I ask you about other smoothies
24:24 that are pretty popular today?
24:26 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Sure.
24:26 >>John: How about the idea of, like,
24:28 juicing kale and celery and carrots and that stuff?
24:31 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Those are anti-aging smoothies too.
24:33 >>John: They are?
24:34 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, because you're getting the benefits
24:35 of those plant foods.
24:36 Those green foods are very important.
24:38 Most people don't get enough greens in their diet,
24:40 and has those antioxidants and lutein and these other
24:43 phytochemicals, because most people
24:44 don't eat a lot of greens.
24:46 >>John: Hmm.
24:47 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So it's a great way of getting vegetables
24:48 into the diet in these, in these types of smoothies.
24:51 >>John: Is there anything that you don't want
24:52 to be putting into them?
24:53 Are there any foods that you should just
24:54 stay away from as pro-aging?
24:57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: If you're adding ice cream to it
24:59 [chuckles] and some of these rich dairy products
25:01 and so forth, a lot of people do that.
25:03 Or they'll add a ton of sugar in it.
25:05 That, that really takes away from the health benefits.
25:07 >>John: Okay.
25:09 And why is chocolate cake not an anti-aging food?
25:12 Serious question.
25:13 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Chocolate cake, of course,
25:14 is loaded with sugar, fat, and, uh,
25:16 it's just, uh, eggs, and all types of things that they put
25:20 into chocolate cake that, uh, is going to promote aging.
25:24 And actually, those ingredients will damage the cell walls.
25:28 So that's the thing:
25:29 we want to get away from these foods that promote
25:32 the damage to our cells,
25:33 and eat foods that build healthy cells,
25:36 which build healthy bodies.
25:37 >>John: Now, how about when people go out to eat?
25:39 What should they be looking out for?
25:41 >>Dr. Westerdahl: First of all, eating out, there's a lot
25:42 of things that you don't know you're getting in your diet,
25:44 because they add a lot of additives
25:46 in their cooking, sometimes.
25:48 Um, you want to stay away from foods
25:49 that are very rich in cholesterol and saturated fat,
25:52 lots of cheese,
25:53 lots of deep-fat-fried foods and so forth.
25:57 But you can go out to eat and eat healthy, too.
25:59 You can eat anti-aging: going for the salads,
26:02 going for the vegetables, lean proteins.
26:06 Uh, that's a better way to go.
26:07 >>John: I read where one of the,
26:09 where one of the top chefs in New York City said, very openly,
26:12 that one of the great inside secrets is,
26:14 to make the food taste better, just add salt and fat.
26:19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a whole book written about that:
26:21 fat, salt and sugar.
26:22 And those are the things that are addictive substances to our,
26:26 to wanting to eat more of those types of foods.
26:27 So we need to learn how to eat closer to God's original plan,
26:33 eating those natural foods, those natural flavors
26:36 that He's put in all these foods right here.
